Severe stacking and swelling properties are critical issues in two-dimensional (2D) lamellar membrane fabrication and separation processes that can result in low flux and poor rejection. Herein, we propose the assembly of multidimensional MXene-carbon nanotube (CNT) ultrathin membranes by loading a MXene intercalated with CNTs onto a tubular ceramic membrane . Benefiting from the modes of van der Waals interactions (hydrogen bond) and repulsion forces between the MXene and functionalized CNTs, the one-dimensional (1D) CNTs are well dispersed and intercalated into the 2D MXene nanosheets , forming a uniform network and continuous three-dimensional (3D) labyrinthine short mass transfer channels, which can considerably improve the permeability and rejection performance of the membranes. Furthermore, the membranes exhibit a distinct suppressed swelling property via a facile thermal crosslinking process (-OH + -OH = -O- + H 2 O and -COOH + -OH = -COO + H 2 O), accompanied by the formation of new chemical bonds (Ti-O-C and Ti-COO-C) due to dehydroxylation between the neighboring MXene nanosheets and CNTs. Additionally, 50 h long-term operation studies also indicate the promising anti-swelling property and stability of the MXene-CNT membranes. This multidimensional (1D and 2D) assembly and thermal crosslinking strategy represents a new avenue for the facile and scalable development of MXene-based and other 2D material-derived high-performance membranes for water purification .

Ceramic nanofiltration (NF) membranes are of particular significance for molecular separations under harsh conditions. However, they are usually manufactured by the sol-gel process which frequently suffers from low efficiency and poor control in the membrane properties. Herein we demonstrate an efficient and more controllable strategy to produce ceramic tubular NF membranes based on atomic layer deposition (ALD). Tubular ceramic membranes with pore size of ~5 nm are used as the substrates, on which titanium alkoxide (titanicone) is ALD-deposited. Subsequent calcination in air degrades the organic moieties in titanicone, thus converting the dense layer of titanicone into a microporous layer of TiO 2 . This microporous TiO 2 layer serves as a thin separation layer delivering the NF size-sieving function. The thickness of the TiO 2 layer can be readily tuned by changing the ALD cycle numbers, and correspondingly the original substrate membranes are progressively tightened with rising ALD cycles, and the membrane with 300 cycles exhibits a molecular-weight-cut-off (MWCO) of ~680 Da and water permeability of 30 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 . Such a water permeability is higher than many other ceramic tubular membranes with similar MWCOs because of the ultrathin nature of the microporous TiO 2 layer established by titanicone deposition and calcination.

Recycling fly ash for ceramic membrane fabrication not only reduces solid waste discharge, but also decreases the membrane cost. Now, fly ash is becoming a promising substitute material for ceramic membrane preparation. A significant difference between fly ashes from different plants is the particle size, which makes performances of fly ash membranes unpredictable. The novelty of this work is to clarify the effects of the particle size of fly ash on ceramic membranes, thereby giving practical suggestions on fly ash selection for ceramic membrane preparation. Ceramic membranes were fabricated with different sizes of fly ashes. Effects of particle size on porosity, pore size, microstructure, mechanical strength and gas permeability of the membrane were investigated. Results indicate that a broader particle size distribution of fly ash leads to a denser structure of membrane with a lower porosity. Pore size and gas permeability of membrane increase while bending strength decreases with the particle size increasing. Bending strength of a fly ash membrane is largely determined by large particles in the fly ash because the large particles lead to cracks in the membrane. This work provides experimental bases for developing high performance ceramic membranes from fly ash.

In this study, a novel method was proposed for preparing high-flux ceramic membranes via digital light processing (DLP) three-dimensional (3D) printing technology. Two different alumina powders were well dispersed in a photosensitive resin to form a UV-curable slurry for DLP 3D printing. The effects of the grading ratio on the viscosity of the slurry and the porosity, pore size distribution , mechanical strength , roughness, and permeability of the ceramic membranes were systematically investigated. The thermal treatment conditions were also studied and optimized. The obtained ceramic membranes exhibited a uniform pore size distribution, a high porosity, a low tortuosity factor, and an asymmetric structure. The combination of these factors led to a high flux for the 3D-printed ceramic membranes. DLP 3D printing exhibited a good potential to be a strong candidate for the next generation of ceramic membrane fabrication technology.

Wastewater increases and water shortage crises have forced the rapid innovation of water reuse technologies. Ceramic membrane process (CM), as one of the key technologies for wastewater reclamation, can effectively light the current difficulties. However, membrane fouling and low retention rate are critical bottles that hinder its further application. Herein, we proposed yolk-shell Co 3 O 4 spheres modified CM (CoHM-CM) activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to improve membrane filtration performance. The results showed that the synergistic effect of size exclusion of CM and spatial confinement of CoHM enhanced the collision between organic pollutants and active sites. CoHM-CM/PMS (30 mg CoHM loading combined with 0.5 mM PMS dosage) degraded 100 % of 10 mg/L phenol, bisphenol F and sulfamethoxazole, and 91.29 % of 5 mg/L carbamazepine at an instant of membrane filtration. This process efficiently removed secondary effluent organic matter and reduced membrane fouling resistance by more than 70 % in actual wastewater environments. Besides, the yolk-shell catalytic membrane had strong Co 2+ regeneration capacity and chemical stability. It coupled PMS-generated sulfate radicals and singlet oxygen play a core role in increasing the membrane interface energy barrier and releasing the developing tendency of membrane pore blocking to severe cake layer filtration fouling. The results provided a new opportunity for wastewater remediation based on the yolk-shell modified membrane technology.

With the increasing demand for environmental protection, the recovery and reuse of fly ash has attracted more and more attention. In this paper, the fly ash based porous ceramic membrane is modified from hydrophilic to superhydrophobic successfully. Average contact angle and roll-off angle of the modified superhydrophobic fly ash based ceramic membrane are 151.3° and 11.3°, respectively. Additionally, a variety of performances of the prepared superhydrophobic fly ash based ceramic membrane are characterized. Dynamic process of droplets with different initial velocities impacting on the surface of superhydrophobic fly ash based ceramic membrane is photographed by high-speed camera. It is proved that dynamic process of droplet impacting on superhydrophobic surface includes spreading, retraction and partial rebound. Spreading, retraction and solid-liquid contact time of droplets are about 2.9 ms, 11.5 ms and 14.4 ms, respectively. The above data is almost unaffected by impact velocity of droplets. In addition, experiments show that the prepared superhydrophobic fly ash based ceramic membrane has good acid and alkali corrosion resistance , and self-cleaning performance. In this paper, superhydrophobic ceramic membrane prepared by fly ash shows excellent performance and it can provide guidance for the reuse of fly ash.

In this study, a new functionalized flat-sheet ceramic membrane (CuCo 2 O 4 -CM) was prepared by an impregnation-calcination strategy and used in the removal of Bisphenol A (BPA). Various characterization results indicated that a CuCo 2 O 4 layer was uniformly anchored on the membrane surface and the internal porous channels. The CuCo 2 O 4 -CM possessed a smaller mean pore size (80 nm) and better hydrophilicity than the pristine α-Al 2 O 3 substrate after modification. The catalytic degradation in CuCo 2 O 4 -CM /PMS system revealed that 92.1% of BPA and 70.0% of TOC could be removed under optimal conditions (pH = 7.0, C BPA = 30 mg/L and C PMS = 2 mM). Meanwhile, the membrane showed good reusability and improved antifouling properties. During the reaction, four reactive oxygen species (·OH, SO 4 ·- , O 2 ·- and 1 O 2 ) were generated and they all responded for the degradation of BPA. In addition, the mechanism of PMS activation and BPA degradation were proposed. This study presented an efficient oxidation process for BPA degradation and outlines the synergistic effect of separation and catalytic oxidation.

Membrane-based filtration is widely applied for water and wastewater treatment, while membrane fouling caused by contaminants such as proteins is an inevitable problem. Protein-containing mixtures or intact model proteins (e.g., bovine serum albumin, BSA) have been conventionally adopted and recognized as important membrane foulants. However, due to the complex composition of the protein-containing mixture or the inappropriate concentrations of model substances adopted, the real contribution of protein-like fractions toward ceramic membrane fouling remains unknown yet. In this work, the fouling behaviors of BSA and tryptones, representing the intact protein and the mixture of peptides, respectively, in a ceramic membrane microfiltration system were investigated. Both of them exhibited a negligible flux decrease and membrane fouling. For comparison, the fouling behaviors of the environmental protein-like substances (EP) extracted from different sludge sources were also examined. In addition, the experimental and simulation results demonstrate that all the EP samples were easier to aggregate and be adsorbed on the membrane surface than the two model proteins because the environmental protein-like substances had more unsaturated groups. However, those properties were insufficient to cause rapid membrane pore blockage or biocake formation compared with the previous studies. Both the model and actual protein fractions led to light membrane fouling, implying that proteins were not mainly responsible for membrane fouling at the early stage of ceramic membrane microfiltration.

Membrane technology holds great potential for algae-laden water treatment, but membrane fouling and energy consumption hinder its scalability. Herein, we developed a hydrophilic ZrO 2 /Al 2 O 3 ceramic membrane and integrated it with hydrophobic microbubble enrichment, significantly improving filtration performance. Based on density functional theory, the adsorption energy of ZrO 2 /Al 2 O 3 ceramic membrane for water molecules was demonstrated to be −2.06 eV, and the membrane hydrophilicity was significantly enhanced. The experimental results revealed that the synergistic integration of hydrophobic microbubble enrichment and hydrophilic ceramic membrane filtration reduced the ceramic membrane's reversible and irreversible fouling resistance by 74.4 % and 76.0 %, respectively. In addition, the interactions between the altered algal flocs induced by hydrophobic microbubbles with both the membrane surface and the cake layer were weakened during the initial and later filtration phases. The free energy interaction between the algal flocs and the cake layer increased from −9.0 mJ/m 2 to 14.7 mJ/m 2 . The economic analysis further demonstrated that this synergistic approach not only enhanced biomass separation efficiency but also lowered operational costs, offering a scalable solution for sustainable biomass separation.

Ceramic membrane has been widely used in many fields. The pore size has an important effect on the separation effect of the membrane. Particle sintering is a mature method for preparing ceramic microfiltration membranes and has the advantages of convenient operation and strong controllability. In this study, the composite ceramic membranes with different pore size distributions were prepared. During the experiment, the influence of preparation conditions on the membrane was investigated, and the influence of inner coating and outer coating on the modification of the pore size was analyzed from the theoretical level. The carbon capture performance of the composite ceramic membrane was also tested. The experimental results show that the content of ZrO 2 has an effect on the structure of the film. When the solid content of the coating liquid is higher than 5 wt% and less than 20 wt%, and the sintering temperature is higher than 900 °C and less than 1300 °C, the formed film is complete without defects. Compared with the outer coating, the inner coating of the composite ceramic membrane has better applicability. In the carbon capture test, the CO 2 absorption efficiency can reach more than 90 %.

Simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) is an efficient method to remove nitrogen in municipal wastewater treatment. However, low dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations are generally required, leading to serious membrane fouling in membrane bioreactors (MBRs). This study aimed to clarify the synergistic effect of biomass and DO on nitrogen removal and membrane fouling. To achieve this goal, four submerged MBRs equipped with ceramic membranes were operated with different biomass (mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS)) concentrations (3 000 mg/L, 5 000 mg/L, 7 500 mg/L, and 12 000 mg/L) under various DO concentrations (2.0 mg/L, 1.0 mg/L, and 0.5 mg/L). As a result, increasing biomass in the MBRs enhanced total nitrogen (TN) removal via SND, and excellent TN removal efficiencies of 60.7% and 75.8% were obtained using the MBR with an MLSS concentration of 12 000 mg/L and DO concentrations of 2.0 mg/L and 1.0 mg/L. However, a further decrease in DO deteriorated TN removal due to the inhibition of nitrification. Moreover, high MLSS concentrations were beneficial to membrane fouling control for ceramic membranes in MBRs. The lowest transmembrane pressure development rate was observed for the MBR with an MLSS concentration of 12 000 mg/L. High biomass offset the adverse effect of DO decrease on membrane fouling to some extent, and improved the stability of the reactor. Therefore, biomass might be an important parameter for membrane fouling reduction in ceramic MBRs. Overall, optimal biomass and DO concentrations for TN removal were identified, providing useful information for the successful operation of MBRs with efficient TN removal and membrane fouling control.

Membrane distillation (MD) is considered a promising technology for desalination. In the MD process, membrane pores are easily contaminated and wetted, which will degrade the permeate flux and salt rejection of the membrane. In this work, SiC ceramic membranes were used as the supports, and an Al2O3micro-nano structure was constructed on its surface. The surface energy of Al2O3@SiC micro-nano composite membranes was reduced by organosilane grafting modification. The effective deposition of Al2O3nanoflowers on the membrane surface increased membrane roughness and enhanced the anti-fouling and anti-wetting properties of the membranes. Simultaneously, the presence of nanoflowers also regulated the pore structures and thus decreased the membrane pore size. In addition, the effects of Al2(SO4)3concentration and sintering temperature on the surface morphology and performance of the membranes were investigated in detail. It was demonstrated that the water contact angle of the resulting membrane was 152.4°, which was higher than that of the pristine membrane (138.8°). In the treatment of saline water containing 35 g/L of NaCl, the permeate flux was about 11.1 kg⋅m−2⋅h−1and the salt rejection was above 99.9%. Note that the pristine ceramic membrane cannot be employed for MD due to its larger membrane pore size. This work provides a new method for preparing superhydrophobic ceramic membranes for MD.
