The perovskite scintillators have been extensively studied recently for their merits of tunable emission spectra and simple preparation processes. However, the practical applications of perovskite scintillator-based X-ray image sensor are still impeded by inadequate radioluminescence, poor environmental stability, and low imaging resolution. Herein, we demonstrate a scalable co-firing method to fabricate high-quality lead-free Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 perovskite scintillator and an Indium (In)-doping strategy is introduced to enhance its radioluminescence performance at the same time. The In-doped Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 obtains a high PLQY of 77.9% and a relative light output of 53372 ph/MeV, which are 0.34 and 1.08 times higher than those of the undoped counterpart, respectively. The X-ray detection limit of the In:Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 can reach 150.55 nGy air /s, 36.53 times lower than the requirement for X-ray medical diagnosis. The synthesized scintillator also shows superior stability under continuous high dose X-ray irradiation of 6800 μGy air /s for 120 minutes, maintaining 95% of its initial radioluminescence intensity. Furthermore, a large-area (300 cm 2 ) flexible perovskite scintillator film is prepared, which owns a much competitive resolution of 10 lp/mm and less distortion in X-ray imaging. This work provides a practical path for the wide application of perovskite scintillator in the field of X-ray detection and imaging in near future.

Graphical Cd-doped Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 was synthesized by room-temperature grinding. [CuI 4 ] and [CdI 4 ] tetrahedrons act as photoluminescent centers separately, resulting in the emission colour manipulated by not only Cd feeding amount but also excitation wavelength. The as-prepared Cd-doped Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 was made into anti-counterfeiting ink and printed on paper. The pattern shows different colours when the excitation wavelength increases from 310 nm to 330 nm. With the development of intellectual properties, concern about advanced anti-counterfeiting is accumulating, which conventional single-modal luminescence can no longer satisfy. As one of rapidly developing 0D materials, copper-based perovskite shows great potential to realize multiple luminescent centers for complex emissions. In this work, Cd was doped into Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 and showed resultant emission at 560 nm which surprisingly showed a red-shifted excitation peak from that of intrinsic self-trapped emission, resulting in excitation-wavelength dependent emission. When the excitation wavelength increased from 290 nm to 330 nm, the emission of Cd-doped Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 changed from deep blue to cold white and finally yellow. Afterwards, Cd-doped Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 was mixed with polystyrene to prepare anti-counterfeiting ink for silk-screen printing. Meanwhile, Cd-doped Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 maintains outstanding stability after doping, no matter under ambient, continuous UV radiation or high-temperature environment. The intensity can be almost totally recovered after heating-and-cooling cycles. This study lays groundwork for future research into multiple luminescent center manipulation in 0D materials.

The development of all-inorganic lead-free Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 perovskite materials has garnered significant attention due to their non-toxic nature and unique optoelectronic properties, particularly in the field of X-ray detection. However, the stability of perovskites remains a major concern for their optical applications. In this study, a highly stable Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 -in-glass composite (Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 @Borosilicate) is fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS), a rapid and low-temperature sintering process. The Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 @Borosilicate composite exhibits strong photoluminescence even after prolonged immersion in various polar solvents, whereas Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 perovskite loses its photoluminescence within seconds. Moreover, the Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 @Borosilicate composite demonstrates robust radio-luminescence under X-ray irradiation, and its potential as a scintillator material is validated through prototype X-ray imaging with a high spatial resolution (≈7 lp mm −1 ). This innovative composite material holds immense potential for scintillation applications and represents a promising approach for encapsulating perovskites in a transparent amorphous medium.

Wearable, portable, and biocompatible optoelectronic devices made of all-green and abundant materials and fabricated by low-temperature solution method are the key point in the development of next generation of intelligent optoelectronics. However, this is usually limited by the weaknesses of mono-component materials, such as non-adjustable photoresponse region, high carrier recombination rate, high signal-to-noise ratio, as well as the weak mechanical flexibility of bulk films. In this work, the Cs3Cu2I5/ZnO heterostructure flexible photodetectors were constructed by a low-temperature solution method combined with spin-coating technique. The heterostructure combines the low dark current and strong deep ultraviolet absorption of Cs3Cu2I5 quantum dots with the high carrier mobility of ZnO quantum dots as well as the efficient charge separation of the vertical p–n junction, to improve the photodetection performance. The heterostructure shows enhanced light/dark current ratio and ultraviolet-to-visible rejection ratios. Under an illumination of 280 nm light, an optical detectivity as high as 1.26 × 1011 Jones was obtained; the optical responsivity and response time are much better than those of control devices. After 300 times of 180° bending cycles, the photocurrent had no obvious change. The results demonstrate that the Cs3Cu2I5/ZnO heterostructure has great potential in wearable and portable visible-blind ultraviolet optoelectronic devices.

Low-dimensional Cu(I)-based metal halides are attractive luminescent materials for optoelectronics and radiation detection, but achieving precise control over their multimodal emission and scintillation performance remains challenging. Here, the acetate anion is introduced into zero-dimensional Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 to engineer excitation-wavelength-dependent emission and scintillation. The acetate-doped Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 crystals show dual-band photoluminescence, switching from blue to green emission with increasing excitation wavelength. Spectroscopic analyses and theoretical calculations suggest that this behavior is most plausibly associated with the coexistence of host self-trapped excitons (STEs) and dopant-induced extrinsic STEs. Acetate doping also increases the radioluminescence output and improves the scintillation response of Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 crystals, affording a high light yield of 57 600 photons MeV −1 , a low detection limit of 166.6 nGy air s −1 , and a high spatial resolution of 18 lp mm −1 in flexible scintillator films. This work establishes organic-anion doping as an effective route to modulate the excited-state landscape and scintillation behavior of full inorganic Cu(I)-based halides and expands their opportunities in light-emitting devices and high-energy radiation detection.

All-inorganic lead-free perovskite scintillators have attracted wide applications in X-ray imaging recently due to their low cost, high resolution, and environmental friendliness. However, their potential application in thermal neutron detection has yet to be thoroughly explored. In this article, the properties of all-inorganic perovskite Cs3Cu2I5 scintillators for thermal neutron detection have been investigated. A simple synthesis process has been applied to produce Cs3Cu2I5 scintillators. The as-prepared Cs3Cu2I5 crystals exhibit intense blue emission with a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 60.3%. A composite of 6LiF, Cs3Cu2I5, and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) has been utilized for thermal neutron detection, which has a light yield of about 28 000 photons per thermal neutron, four times that of a commercial 6Li-glass (GS20) scintillator (7000 photons per thermal neutron). Effective neutron-gamma-pulse-discrimination has been achieved using a network-dynamics digital filter, effectively separating thermal neutrons from gamma events. Our composite scintillators have a high thermal neutron absorption efficiency of about 60%. In addition, Cs3Cu2I5 crystals are more sensitive to X-ray irradiation compared to commercial Na-doped CsI scintillators. Our work provides a new strategy for large-scale perovskite-based thermal neutron detection and imaging.

Copper halide Cs3Cu2X5 (X = Cl, Br, I) nanocrystals (NCs) have become a research hotspot in recent years. Compared with perovskite NCs, they have a large Stokes shift with a self-absorption-free effect and convenient solution processability, which endows them with potential applications in high-resolution flexible X-ray imaging and ultraviolet detection. However, the synthesis of Cs3Cu2I5 NCs is limited to the hot-injection method, which needs tedious operation procedures. Here, a one-pot fabrication strategy was designed based on the principle of chemical potential and thermodynamic equilibrium to achieve the mass production of Cs3Cu2I5 NCs. With the assistance of I−, Cs3Cu2I5 NCs were successfully fabricated with a reaction yield of about 70%, with the emission peak located at 445 nm and a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 72.6%. By scaling up the initial reaction volume tenfold, we successfully demonstrated mass production. Furthermore, Cs3Cu2Br5 and Cs3Cu2Cl5 NCs were also fabricated using this approach, indicating the versatility of this method. This strategy effectively optimizes the experimental process and cost, providing convenience for subsequent research based on this kind of material, such as optical electronic devices, ion-doping studies and so on.

All-inorganic lead-free Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 crystals exhibit remarkable structural stability and have shown significant potential for applications in scintillators and luminescent materials. In this study, Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 single crystal at the centimeter scale has been successfully grown with the hydroiodic acid (HI) solution by the bottom seeded solution growth (BSSG) method. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and TG-DSC results have confirmed its excellent environmental stability. The crystal has shown prominent UV absorption peaks at 270 nm and 352 nm, with a bandgap of 2.49 eV. The as-grown crystal exhibits blue luminescence under ultraviolet irradiation, with the main PL spectral peak positioned at 452 nm and corresponding CIE color coordinates of (0.15, 0.11). Overall, the growth of large-size Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 crystals, coupled with their optical properties, suggests potential applications in the field of luminescent materials.

Scintillators are widely utilized in high-energy radiation detection in view of their high light yield and short fluorescence decay time. However, constrained by their current shortcomings, such as complex fabrication procedures, high temperature, and difficulty in the large scale, it is difficult to meet the increasing demand for cost-effective, flexible, and environment-friendly X-ray detection using traditional scintillators. Perovskite-related cesium copper halide scintillators have recently received multitudinous research due to their tunable emission wavelength, high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), and excellent optical properties. Herein, we demonstrated a facile solution-synthesis route for indium-doped all-inorganic cesium copper iodide (Cs3Cu2I5) powders and a high scintillation yield flexible film utilizing indium-doped Cs3Cu2I5 powders. The large area flexible films achieved a PLQY as high as 90.2% by appropriately adjusting the indium doping concentration, much higher than the undoped one (73.9%). Moreover, benefiting from low self-absorption and high PLQY, the Cs3Cu2I5:In films exhibited ultralow detection limit of 56.2 nGy/s, high spatial resolution up to 11.3 lp/mm, and marvelous relative light output with strong stability, facilitating that Cs3Cu2I5:In films are excellent candidates for X-ray medical radiography. Our work provides an effective strategy for developing environment-friendly, low-cost, and efficient scintillator films, showing great potential in the application of high-performance X-ray imaging.

Scintillator films with high light output and low cross-talk are essential for highly sensitive and high-resolution X-ray imaging applications. However, only specific scintillators prepared with high-cost method or pixelated template meet these demands. Solution processed strategies possess the merit of low-cost while scintillator particles are usually in chaos with severe light scattering, especially for thick films up to hundreds of microns, resulting in poor imaging sensitivity and resolution. Herein, we demonstrate that low-symmetrical zero-dimensional Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 scintillator can grow longitudinally with spray-coating strategy with the assistance of crystal facet inhibitor. The additive, triallyl isocyanurate, exhibits preferred crystal face binding ability, inducing oriented growth and well-defined columnar structure with large thickness more than one hundred microns. The final scintillator films show higher luminescence polarity and light output, contributing to remarkable improvement in light yield and imaging resolution of 71% and 81% compared with the control sample, respectively. Besides, the added monomer crosslinks under annealing and provide robust protection, leading to excellent radiation hardness and storage stability under ambient environment. By virtue of the negligible afterglow, artifact-free X-ray imaging at a frame rate of 3840 fps is fulfilled, indicating the promising prospects of this strategy for application in low-cost, high-performance fast X-ray imaging.

In this study, a framework for predicting the gas-sensitive properties of gas-sensitive materials by combining machine learning and density functional theory (DFT) has been proposed. The framework rapidly predicts the gas response of materials by establishing relationships between multisource physical parameters and gas-sensitive properties. In order to prove its effectiveness, the perovskite Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 has been selected as the representative material. The physical parameters before and after the adsorption of various gases have been calculated using DFT, and then a machine learning model has been trained based on these parameters. Previous studies have shown that a single physical parameter alone is not enough to accurately predict the gas sensitivity of materials. Therefore, a variety of physical parameters have been selected for machine learning, and the final machine learning model achieved 92% accuracy in predicting gas sensitivity. It is important to note that although there have been no previous reports on the response of Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 to hydrogen sulfide, the resulting model predicts the gas response of H 2 S; it is subsequently confirmed experimentally. This method not only enhances the understanding of the gas sensing mechanism, but also has a universal nature, making it suitable for the development of various new gas-sensitive materials.

Copper-based halides, a type of perovskite derivative, inherit their excellent optoelectronic properties and solution processability and also have the advantages of being nontoxic and stable. Despite the tremendous achievements of microfabrication in conventional halide perovskites, reports on copper-based halide array devices are rare due to their difficult high-quality crystallization. Here, by introducing single-crystal thin films grown by space confinement method as substrates, reliable photolithography based on their single crystals is successfully achieved and controllable homoepitaxial single-crystal arrays is demonstrated. By adjusting the substrate, angle, and growth time, the orientation, arrangement, and size of arrays could be controlled. Temperature and time are used to regulate the growth stage to obtain clean and appropriately sized arrays. ITO/Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 /ITO neuromorphic device based on homoepitaxial arrays is developed. The variation of synaptic plasticity could be controlled by the number and frequency of light pulses. The device successfully simulated the process of “learning, forgetting, and relearning” in the human brain, demonstrating the potential of application in sensing-storage-computing-integrated devices.
