A structure of hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) micelle-assisted reduced graphene oxide–Ag nanoparticle (rGO–AgNP) hybrids is designed and fabricated for SERS detection of nonpolar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), in which CTAB micelles act as the host material to capture PAH molecules. This method provides stable aqueous suspensions of functionalized graphene with an alkyl chain, since the rGO–AgNP hybrids do not need to be pre-modified by CTAB. The result shows that the CTAB-assisted rGO–AgNP substrate has excellent SERS performance toward PAHs and ideal stability under continuous laser radiation. With further optimization, the detection limits of pyrene and perylene were 10−6 M and 10−7 M, respectively. Two different PAH molecules could be detected simultaneously by their characteristic peaks.

Background Despite developments in nanotechnology for use in the pharmaceutical field, there is still a need for implementation of this technology in agrochemistry. In this study, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were successfully prepared by a facile and an eco-friendly route using two different ligands, 2ʹ-amino-1,1ʹ:4ʹ,1″-terphenyl-3,3″,5,5″-tetracarboxylic acid (H4L) and 1,3,6,8-tetrakis (p-benzoic acid)-pyrene (TBAPy), as reducing agents. The physiochemical properties of the as-obtained AgNPs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The toxicity of H4L–AgNP and TBAPy–AgNP against the brown planthopper (BPH, Nilaparvata lugens) was also measured. Results SEM and TEM analyses demonstrated the formation of quasi-spherical AgNP structures in the presence of H4L and TBAPy. Insecticidal assays showed that TBAPy is less effective against N. lugens, with a median lethal concentration (LC50) of 810 mg/L, while the toxicity of H4L increased and their LC50 reached 786 mg/L 168 h posttreatment at a high concentration of 2000 mg/L. H4L–AgNPs were also highly toxic at a low concentration of 20 mg/L, with LC50 = ~ 3.9 mg/L 168 h posttreatment, while TBAPy–AgNPs exhibited less toxicity at the same concentration, with LC50 = ~ 4.6 mg/L.Conclusion sThese results suggest that the synthesized AgNPs using the two ligands may be a safe and cheaper method compared with chemical insecticides for protection of rice plants from pests and has potential as an effective insecticide in the N. lugens pest management program.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have proved their superiorities as building blocks for constructing high-performance nanofiltration (NF) membranes. Herein, we propose a novel MXene-based NF membrane with high water permeability and stability by intercalating Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) into the laminar structure of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene with hyperbranched polyethyleneimine (HPEI) crosslinking. The pure Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene membrane, the AgNP-intercalated Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene (AgNP@Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene) membrane and the AgNP@Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene membrane with HPEI crosslinking (HPEI-AgNP@Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene) were comparatively investigated regarding their physicochemical properties and NF performance. The prepared HPEI-AgNP@Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene membrane exhibited competitive water permeabilities (24.64–30.73 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 ) and nearly 100% rejections for Congo red, methyl orange, methyl blue and Rhodamine B solutions for long-term operation. Moreover, the HPEI-AgNP@Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene membrane also showed excellent NF performance for MgSO 4 , MgCl 2 , Na 2 SO 4 and NaCl solutions with the rejections of 84.15%, 77.01%, 74.67% and 56.58%, respectively. The NF separation mechanisms for the HPEI-AgNP@Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene membrane were elucidated based on its unique physicochemical structure. These findings may offer novel insights into tuning the laminar structures of MXene-based NF membranes for enhanced water purification .

In recent years, intelligent response membrane materials have aroused considerable interest in controllable oil–water separation. However, challenges such as unstable response repeatability and easy bacterial contamination continue to hinder their effective use. Herein, a superhydrophobic fabric with pH responsiveness and antibacterial property were synthesized by combing (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane with AgNPs and pH-responsive polymer on a fabric substrate. The fabric persisted superhydrophobicity with a WCA of 156° under natural conditions, while underwent a controlled transition of surface wettability in acidic environments. Heavy oil–water mixtures and light oil–water mixtures achieved controllable separation both before and after pH response. The fabric exhibited outstanding oil–water separation capability, achieving a separation efficiency of 98.0% and a separation flux of up to 11,025.0 L·m −2 ·h −1 . The pH response and oil–water separation demonstrated excellent repeatability. Specially, the pH responsiveness was maintained for up to 10 cycles, and the oil–water separation remained repeatable for up to 15 cycles. Even when tested under various environmental conditions, the superhydrophobicity was retained. Additionally, the fabric possessed remarkable antibacterial property with an efficiency reaching 90.4%. The preparation of the superhydrophobic fabric serves as a valuable reference for developing multifunctional and stable intelligent materials for oil–water separation. Graphical abstract

Carbon nanomaterial/polymer-based flexible strain sensors form the foundations of many cutting-edge applications, e.g., personalized health monitoring, human-machine interaction, etc. However, achieving a high sensitivity to slight deformations remains a challenging task for the existing technologies. Herein, we immobilize silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) onto the surfaces of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) by a polydopamine (PDA)-assisted process, in order to fabricate a new nanocomposite sensor for capturing microscopic static deformations (strain: <1%) and microscopic high-frequency vibrations (strain: <0.001%, frequency: up to 100 s kHz). The material characterizations performed show that AgNPs are compounded, in their elemental state, with the PDA nanolayers on the surfaces of MWNTs, and help to lower the potential barriers between nanofillers . As such, the tunneling of electrons across adjacent nanofillers, which underpins the sensing of slight deformations, is promoted. The proposed nanocomposite sensor demonstrates a significantly higher sensitivity to both static (gauge factor: ∼38) and dynamic deformations , than control specimens that are fabricated from pure MWNTs or PDA-coated MWNTs. Moreover, the sensitivity of the new sensor to microscopic high-frequency vibrations is positively related to the mass of the AgNPs added. This study presents a promising surface modification approach for optimizing the sensitivities of carbon nanomaterial/polymer-based strain sensors to slight deformations.

Marine biological fouling has become a major obstacle to the development of marine industry. Silicone coating is becoming a promising environmental protection and antifouling material because of its nontoxic, harmless, and low surface energy. Herein, double-ended hydroxypropyl polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and polytetrahydrofuran (PTMG) were used as the main chain, 2-hydroxyethyl disulfide (HEDS) and dimethylglyoxime (DMG) were used as chain extenders, and Cu2+ was used as the coordination metal. Then, by introducing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), a AgNP hybrid silicone antifouling coating with spontaneous self-healing and long-term antifouling properties was constructed. The interaction of disulfide bonds, oxime urethane bonds, metal coordination bonds, and hydrogen bonds endowed a self-healing efficiency of 91.7%. As the reinforced effect of AgNPs, the mechanical properties of the coating could reach up to 2.75 MPa. The surface energy of the coating was controlled below 25 mJ·m–2, which had good dirt release performance and self-cleaning ability. Due to the excellent antibacterial activity of AgNPs, the resistance to marine bacteria Pseudomonas was up to 97.8%, which effectively inhibited the formation of biofilms. This work provided guidance for the development of marine antifouling coatings with self-healing, pollution-free, and long-term antifouling abilities.

Based on etched PS sphere arrays, the different growths of Ag nanoparticles with tunable LSPR are designed when SiO2-25 nm/Ag-30 nm/SiO2-100 nm sandwich nanocavity structures are annealed at 500 °C, including the hexagonal silver nanoparticle rings, circular silver nanoparticle rings, and aggregated silver nanoparticles. The uniformity of particle size and regularity of position generate enhanced electromagnetic field and good surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy signals as confirmed by UV–vis observation and finite difference time domain method simulation. The developed nanostructures are effectively used as stable, nonreproducible, and markable anti-counterfeiting signs.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) loaded on the cotton fiber can endow the fiber with good antibacterial activity, but the AgNPs on the surface of cotton fiber will leach out with the increase of washing times, which will not only greatly reduce the antibacterial properties of cotton fiber, but also cause pollution to the environment. In this paper, carboxyl groups were introduced into cotton fiber by three methods, namely selective oxidation, butane tetracarboxylic acid (BTCA) grafting and polyacrylic acid (PAA) adsorption. The silver ions (Ag + ) were adsorbed on the cotton fibers through electrostatic attraction, and after reduction, the AgNPs were loaded onto the cotton fibers, and the AgNP distribution on the fiber and its effect to the washing resistance of AgNPs were studied. The results showed that the carboxyl groups can be introduced onto the cotton fibers by all the three methods, and the reaction only occurred in the amorphous region of the fibers. The selective oxidation and the BTCA grafting can introduce carboxylic groups into the interior of cotton fibers while the PAA adsorption only imports carboxyl groups on the surface of the fiber. As a consequence, AgNPs were formed inside of the cotton fiber when the selective oxidation and the BTCA grafting were employed, while AgNPs can only be loaded on the surface of the fiber by the PAA adsorption method. AgNPs inside of the fiber have high energetic adherence, resulting in silver-cotton fabric nanocomposites with strong slow-release property and long-term antibacterial ability. The fabric nanocomposites prepared by selective oxidation and BTCA grafting exhibited high AgNP retention rate and excellent antibacterial activity even after 80 washing cycles. Graphic abstract

Electromagnetic waves endanger precision instruments and human health, driving the demand for multifunctional flexible transparent conductive films (FTCFs) with integrated electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and electric heating to ensure reliable microelectronic performance in extreme environments beyond conventional materials’ limits. However, current FTCFs based on carbon nanomaterials, metal nanowires, or 2D materials still suffer from insufficient oxidation resistance, weak adhesion to substrates, and performance degradation under complex conditions, limiting their practical deployment. To address these, we designed the films, which involved constructing silver nanowire/carbon nanotubes/silver nanoparticle (AgNW/CNT@Ag) conductive networks on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) via spray and spin coating, followed by transferring them into glycerol-modified, sodium alginate (SA)-poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) composite layers. This structure leverages AgNPs grafted on CNTs, forming resistor-capacitor-like configurations to enhance EMI shielding via improved electromagnetic wave absorption. The embedded design, combined with CNT coverage over AgNW, strengthens the adhesion and oxidation resistance by blocking oxygen. Additionally, SA-induced surface wrinkles boost conductivity and wave reflection, while the conductive network enables efficient Joule heating. The resulting film exhibits performance: 9.46 Ω/sq sheet resistance @ 57.7% transmittance, a figure-of-merit (FoM) of 6.31, an EMI shielding effectiveness of 31.42 dB, a saturation temperature of 93.1 °C at 6 V, a relative resistance change (RRC) of 0.92 after 60 oxidation cycles, and an RRC of 0.36 after 1000 bending cycles. This work provides a promising structural design and material strategy for FTCFs, advancing their commercialization in multifunctional electronic applications.

Three-dimensional (3D) electrochemical systems effectively improve electron transfer rates by increasing electrode surface area and active site density using particle microelectrodes. To investigate the potential utility of a transition metal–carbon particle electrode, a 3D electrochemical activation system for peroxydisulfate (PDS) using a silver nanoparticle (AgNP)–incorporated reduced graphene oxide (rGO) hydrogel particle electrode (3D-PDS/AgNP/rGO) was constructed for achieving enhanced acid orange 74 (AO 74) degradation. The AgNP/rGO hydrogel was prepared via a low-temperature hydrothermal reduction method in which AgNPs were uniformly dispersed within the porous rGO matrix. Optimization of the 3D-PDS/AgNP/rGO process parameters demonstrated that AO 74 degradation efficiency was strongly dependent on AgNP/rGO concentration, PDS concentration, applied current, and solution pH. The degradation efficiency reached 96.31% within 3 h, and the degradation rate constant exhibited a 2.35-fold higher than that of a 2D-PDS system that lacked a particle electrode. Water matrix analysis revealed that Cl − enhanced AO 74 degradation, whereas CO 3 2− and PO 4 3− inhibited it. The use of radical scavengers identified hydroxyl radicals and sulfate radicals as the generated dominant reactive species. 3D-PDS/AgNP/rGO exhibited remarkable stability, maintaining 84.44% degradation efficiency after five cycles and outperforming the conventional 2D-PDS system. This study demonstrated that 3D-PDS/AgNP/rGO met the technical requirements for efficient degradation of organic pollutants and exhibited application potential in azo dye wastewater treatment.

AgNP/MXene arrays enabled a compact biomimetic SERS e-nose. • Chemically distinct MXenes generated cross-reactive VOC responses. • MXene adsorption and AgNP enhancement produced VOC fingerprints. • Four similar VOCs were classified with 100% accuracy by PCA/HCA. • Three sensing channels achieved efficient VOC discrimination. The discrimination of structurally similar volatile organic compounds (VOCs) remains a significant challenge due to the limited selectivity of existing sensing materials. To address this, we present a methodologically novel, novel bio-inspired electronic nose platform based on a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor array of silver nanoparticles/MXene (AgNP/MXene) composites for intelligent VOC identification. The proposed approach combines a rationally designed, chemically orthogonal MXene library (Ti 3 C 2 , V 2 C, and a high-entropy MXene, TiVCrMoC 3 ) with an optimized multivariate analysis workflow, thereby establishing a generalizable methodology for constructing cross-reactive SERS sensing systems. The MXene components serve as superior adsorbents to preconcentrate VOC molecules, while the in-situ grown AgNPs provide strong plasmonic enhancement, translating adsorption events into distinct molecular “fingerprint” spectra. The cross-reactive responses of the array to four similar VOCs (dipentene, ethyl lactate, isopropyl acetate, and propylene glycol monomethyl ether). The generated multidimensional SERS data is effectively decoded using pattern recognition algorithms, namely hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and principal component analysis (PCA), which provided a reliable proof-of-concept for the identification of VOC gases. This work thus introduces a new materials–data co-design strategy for biomimetic SERS e-nose development, enabling reliable discrimination of structurally similar VOCs in complex environments. s Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a key clinical marker for early pregnancy and trophoblastic disease. We present a turn-on electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor emphasizing materials safety and aqueous compatibility by integrating a CsPbBr₃@COF-LZU1@Au hybrid with a peptide recognition layer. Confining perovskite nanocrystals inside COF-LZU1 yields a porous, mechanically robust shell that suppresses lead ion release, improves water compatibility/dispersion, and mitigates photochemical and hydrolytic degradation, enabling reliable ECL in PBS. A conformal Au nanodomain rim enhances interfacial charge transport and provides mild, covalent (Au S) anchoring sites for the hCG-binding peptide (PPLRINRHILTR-GGGGC), avoiding bulky antibodies and harsh coupling reagents. Signal regulation is achieved with citrate-stabilized Ag nanoparticles that assemble near the peptide in the intact state to quench ECL; specific hCG binding sterically prevents AgNP tethering, restoring emission. Operating under benign aqueous conditions (no organic solvents during measurement, small reagent volumes, room-temperature assembly), the sensor delivers a wide working range (0.05–5000 mIU/mL), a low detection limit (0.047 mIU/mL), high selectivity over common interferents (FSH, LH, TSH, IgG, BSA), excellent reproducibility (RSD ≈ 2.2 %), and strong intraday/long-term/operational stability. Serum tests give ~96–103 % recoveries with low RSDs, indicating minimal matrix effects. By encapsulating lead-based emitters to reduce toxicity risk, enhancing aqueous dispersibility, and using compact peptide ligands for precise molecular recognition, this modular perovskite@COF/Au/peptide design offers a practical and safer route to high-performance ECL diagnostics and can be readily adapted to additional biomarkers by swapping the peptide sequence.
