5-Aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) is the first-line drug for ulcerative colitis (UC), which encounters therapeutic constraints due to the poor water solubility and absorption by the upper gastrointestinal. Here, a cyclodextrin-based metal-organic framework (CD-MOF) is used as a carrier for 5-ASA (ASA@CM) to enhance its solubility. To improve the targeted release 5-ASA, ASA@CM is incorporated into sodium alginate/ L -arginine complex (SA-LA) to obtain the desired microspheres (ASA@CM/SL) by electrospray. ASA@CM/SL safeguards 5-ASA against the harsh gastrointestinal environment and provides favorable delivery to the colon. The anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant activity is studied by measuring inflammatory factors and reactive oxygen species (ROS). The therapeutic effect of ASA@CM/SL on UC mice induced with dextran sulfate sodium is assessed. The biosafety by evaluating cytotoxicity and organ toxicity is studied. ASA@CM/SL shows excellent therapeutic effects for UC, as evidenced by its alleviation of inflammatory response and restoration of disrupted intestinal barriers. ASA@CM/SL features low cytotoxicity and low organ toxicity. This study provides a potential strategy for improving 5-ASA solubility and delivery efficiency, which may also be applied to broadly tackle various small hydrophobic molecules to treat UC and other intestinal diseases.

In this study, a bimetallic composite catalyst (Co–Fe@C) was fabricated with calcination at high temperature (800 °C) by using Co-MIL-101 (Fe) as the precursor. The characterization results showed that the resulted Co–Fe@C composite mainly consisted of carbon, FeCo alloys, Fe 3 O 4 , Co 3 O 4 and FeO, and owned evident magnetism. In addition, the Co–Fe@C was employed to activate the peroxydisulfate (PDS) to degrade a representative organic pollutant ( p -arsanilic acid, p -ASA) and the main factors were optimized, which involved 0.2 g L −1 of catalyst dosage, 1.0 g L −1 of PDS dosage and 5.0 of initial pH. Under the optimal condition, Co–Fe@C/PDS system could completely degrade p -ASA (20 mg L −1 ) in 5 min. In the Co–Fe@C/PDS system, SO 4 − · , Fe(IV) and ·OH were the main species during p -ASA degradation. Under the attack of these species, p -ASA was first decomposed into phenols and then transformed into the organics acids and finally mineralized into CO 2 and H 2 O through a series of reactions like hydroxylation, dearsenification, deamination and benzene ring opening. Importantly, most of the released inorganic arsenic species (93.40%) could be efficiently adsorbed by the catalyst.

Given their considerable solubility in water and potentially high toxicity to human health, organoarsenic compounds have become an emerging contaminant. Herein, a heterogeneous Fenton process mediated by SiO 2 -coated nano zero-valent iron (SiO 2 -nZVI) was employed to simultaneously remove the p -arsanilic acid ( p -ASA, a typical organoarsenic compound) and the released arsenic. The initial pH value significantly influenced on the degradation of p -ASA and at the optimal pH (3.0), p -ASA (10 mg L −1 ) could be completely oxidized to As(V), NH 4 + , and plentiful phenolic compounds such as phenol and p -hydroquinone via the cleavage of C–N and C–As bonds within 60 min in pure water. Meanwhile, although the formed lepidocrocite and magnetite on the surface of SiO 2 -nZVI significantly limited the reutilization, they played a vital role in the adsorption of the released As(V) and the residual arsenic levels in the effluent were as low as 0.031 mg L −1 , meeting both the drinking water standard of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the surface water standard of China (0.05 mg L −1 ). Furthermore, high-level dissolved organic matters (DOM) (> 2 mg C L −1 ) exhibited strong interference with both the oxidation of p -ASA and adsorption of arsenic, but the interference could be eliminated by increasing the SiO 2 -nZVI dosage or adding H 2 O 2 . Importantly, this system could completely remediate p -ASA in a short time and simultaneously avoid the secondary pollution caused by inorganic arsenic, which was significant for the remediation of organoarsenic pollutants in swine wastewater.

Acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylate (ASA) toughened plastics based on block copolymers are successfully prepared via RAFT emulsion polymerization and various molecular structures are designed to have different morphologies in order to investigate the relationship between morphologies and mechanical properties. All materials prepared by blending exhibit sea-island morphology. Promoting particles dispersion and increasing spherical particle size shorten surface-to-surface interparticle distance and help to improve tensile properties of materials. Enlarging particles through crosslinked structures are found to be a more effective method to improve tensile toughness, at the cost of a slight reduction in tensile yield strength. Larger spherical particles with crosslinked structures are found to help improving the Izod notched impact strength of materials. However, the existence of a SAN core decreases the material's ability to withstand impact. Compared to blended samples, triblock copolymer materials display higher flexural strength with equal flexural modulus. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 59:389–395, 2019. © 2018 Society of Plastics Engineers

In this study, iron–aluminum covalently bonded modified activated carbon (CAFM@PAC) was prepared by a constant-temperature infiltration method, which demonstrated highly efficient removal capability against p-aminobenzoic acid (p-ASA). The complete degradation of 30 μM p-ASA was achieved within 6 h at a dosage of 2.0 g/L CAFM@PAC, which was attributed to the enhanced adsorption mechanism involving electrostatic, hydrogen bonding, and π–π EDA interactions, as well as synergistic interactions between the Fe/Al/C fractions for the in situ production of H2O2 under acidic conditions, which triggered a Fenton-like reaction for the generation of ROS. The Fe/Al covalent structure promotes rapid electron transfer and accelerated Fe2+/Fe3+ cycling, resulting in a highly efficient H2O2 generation system. DFT calculations and product analysis confirmed that the C3 and C6 sites of p-ASA were the key sites for ROS attack. CAFM@PAC exhibited strong environmental adaptability and high recyclability, and maintains excellent removal efficiencies even in a multi-ionic system, with very low leakage of metal ions. CAFM@PAC showed excellent removal efficiency even in a polyconic system and very low metal ion leakage, demonstrating its potential as a sustainable water treatment material.

Periodontitis involves bacterial infection, inflammation, and bone loss, requiring multifaceted treatment. Here, we developed a multifunctional carbon dot nanomaterial (ASA-ALN-CDs) from aspirin and alendronate sodium via one-step microwave-assisted synthesis. ASA-ALN-CDs showed potent antibacterial and antibiofilm activity against P. gingivalis and F. nucleatum, high bone-targeting ability, and good cytocompatibility. The material suppressed LPS-induced IL-1β and IL-6 expression and promoted osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells under inflammatory conditions. In a rat periodontitis model, local administration of ASA-ALN-CDs reduced alveolar bone loss and inflammation. Mechanistically, ASA-ALN-CDs inhibited the HIF-1α signaling pathway and downregulated LDHA and VEGF. Collectively, ASA-ALN-CDs represent a promising bone-targeting nanoplatform integrating antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and pro-osteogenic functions for periodontitis therapy.

Direct conversion of CO 2 toward isomerized heavy olefins remains a challenge. In this work, Fischer-Tropsch synthesis and light olefins oligomerization were coupled to produce isomerized heavy olefins from CO 2 hydrogenation on a bifunctional K/Fe 2 N- x M/ASA catalyst. A K/Fe 2 N-17.0%Ga/ASA achieved the highest selectivity (47.7%) toward C 4+ heavy olefins, among which the selectivity of isomerized olefins was as high as 32.2%. Ga species did not adsorb light olefins (e.g., ethylene) directly, but they boosted the adsorption of light olefins on ASA support. Besides, the addition of Ga promoted H 2 dissociation to generate Ga-H species, which further transferred onto ASA support to form additional Brønsted acid sites promoting oligomerization reaction that obeyed β-H elimination mechanism via alkoxide intermediates. This work developed not only a unique K/Fe 2 N as Fischer-Tropsch synthesis catalyst, but also an integrated system coupling Fischer-Tropsch synthesis and light olefins oligomerization to achieve high selectivity isomerized heavy olefins synthesis from CO 2 hydrogenation.

Purpose This study aims to overcome the challenges of the current oral targeted drug delivery system, such as the complex preparation process, poor biocompatibility, and delayed drug release. Methods Here, a non-covalent polymer hydrogel was prepared using the mechanochemical method, and the solid phase loading of 5-amino salicylic acid (5-ASA) was realized. Results The results obtained from the thermodynamics study, particle size analysis, and electron microscopy show that chitosan (CS) and sodium alginate (SA) form a pH-sensitive hydrogel under the mechanochemical force and also maintain good stability in aqueous solution. Fluorescent tracers study showed that the pH-sensitive hydrogel could achieve the targeted drug release in the colon and the retention time was over 12 h. Next, in vivo efficacy studies, change in mice body weight, DAI (disease activity index) score, thymus, and spleen index, and the diseased state of the mice colon revealed that the pH-sensitive hydrogel is an improved drug delivery system over 5-ASA API commercial preparations as observed in the efficacy and toxicological studies. Conclusion This method uses an innovative preparation technology that without the need of cross-linking agent to produce an efficient colon-targeted drug delivery system for the treatment of ulcerative colitis.

La/ZSM-5@ASA composites were developed by a stepwise assembly strategy. • La 3+ displaced the acidic protons and generated new BAS [Si-OLa(OH) 2 -Al]. • ASA overcoat passivated external surface acid sites and enabled pre-cracking. • Hierarchical La/ZSM-5@ASA shows high light-olefin selectivity in n -paraffin cracking. Catalytic cracking of surplus automotive fuels, heavy oil and waste plastics into light olefins is an efficient resource-reutilization strategy. Conventional ZSM-5 zeolites, however, suffer from limited light-olefin selectivity and coke-induced deactivation due to strong acidity and microporous constraints. Herein, a stepwise assembly strategy involving La modification and subsequent amorphous silica-alumina (ASA) overcoating was developed to construct core–shell catalysts with optimized acidity and diffusion. La modification modulated acid strength and distribution, and DFT calculations revealed it lowered the energy barrier of the rate-determining protonation step, promoting propylene formation. The ASA overcoat, applied via co-gelation, passivated external strong Brønsted acid sites and introduced open interfacial diffusion channels. This architecture enabled pre-cracking of reactants, promoting efficient C-C bond cleavage and suppressing secondary reactions. The optimized hierarchical La/ZSM-5@ASA(1:1) achieved 63.10% total ethylene and propylene selectivity in n -heptane cracking, outperforming ZSM-5 and 0.50La/ZSM-5 by 5.12% and 1.38%, respectively. This advantage is more pronounced for longer linear hydrocarbons, and the suppression of methane and coke precursors boosts atom utilization efficiency, indicating a carbon-economic cracking pathway.

Monodisperse 5-ASA microcapsules (CV < 3%) are engineered via microfluidics. • Nanocrystal-in-microcapsule architecture yields high drug loading (20.4 wt%). • pH 6.1 threshold enables release in the acidic IBD microenvironment. • Moving-boundary kinetics map single-particle to macro-scale release. The performance of targeted oral delivery systems for hydrophobic drugs like 5-aminosalicylic acid is limited by variable release kinetics and premature release in the upper gastrointestinal tract. To address this challenge, monodisperse 5-aminosalicylic acid nanocrystal-in-hydroxypropyl methylcellulose acetate succinate (5-ASA NCs@HPMCAS) composite microcapsules were prepared via microfluidic interfacial assembly and antisolvent precipitation. Droplet-templated solidification yielded microcapsules with an average diameter of 28.33 μm, a coefficient of variation < 3%, a drug loading of 20.4 wt% and an encapsulation efficiency of 83.3%. Driven by the pH-dependent transition of the HPMCAS shell, the microcapsules remained structurally intact under simulated gastric and proximal intestinal conditions (pH < 6.0) but underwent rapid interfacial erosion around pH 6.1. The model payload was released within approximately 3 min at pH 7.2 under quiescent in vitro conditions, while 5-ASA release reached 88.5% at pH 6.5 over 4 h. Ex vivo GI imaging of DiR-labeled microcapsules provided preliminary evidence of upper-GI retention and lower-GI localization after oral administration. Residual ethyl acetate was approximately 217 ppm, while dimethyl sulfoxide was below the assay’s quantification range. A 24-hour Caco-2 assay showed cell viability above 90%, supporting preliminary in vitro cytocompatibility under the tested conditions. The uniform particle size also enabled comparison between single-particle moving-boundary kinetics and macroscopic release behavior, providing a physicochemical basis for pH-responsive oral delivery.

In this study, a novel cellulose nanocrystal/metal-organic framework composite (MC) was developed as a stabilizer for alkenyl succinic anhydride (ASA) Pickering emulsions, demonstrating remarkable sizing performance and antimicrobial properties for advanced food packaging applications. The MCs exhibited superior emulsion stabilization capabilities compared to pure metal-organic frameworks, with the optimum MC concentration identified as 1.0 wt% CNC. The hydrophobicity of the sizing paper was found to be enhanced with increasing CNC content. The MC-ASA sized paper demonstrated commendable storage stability, robust gas adsorption, and resistance to water vapor or water droplets. The MCs-ASA sized paper showed excellent food preservation efficacy, maintaining the freshness of strawberries for up to seven days, compared to ASA-sized paper without MCs. The antimicrobial assays targeting Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus highlighted the intrinsic antimicrobial properties of the MCs, contributing to the extended freshness of the encased strawberries. The water vapor barrier efficacy and water retention capabilities of MCs-ASA sized paper were found to be superior to those of the paper without MCs, emphasizing the potential of the developed composite as an innovative and effective food packaging solution. This study offers valuable insights into the synthesis and implementation of CNC/MOF composite particles for versatile applications in food packaging, water-resistant materials, and environmental protection.

Soil aggregation plays an important role in agricultural production activities. However, the structure of soil aggregation is destroyed by the natural environment and unreasonable farming management, resulting in the loss of water, fertilizers and pesticides in soil. At present, hydrogels have been widely reported to promote the formation of soil aggregation. In this paper, amphiphilic calcium alginate (ASA/Ca 2+ ) was applied to promote the formation of soil aggregation and enhance pesticide retention. Initially, an ASA was obtained through the one-pot Ugi condensation (a four-component green chemical reaction). Then, ASA/Ca 2+ hydrogel is prepared by Ca 2+ cross-linking. The formation of soil aggregation was determined through the Turbiscan Lab Expert stability analyzer, Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope (CLSM), and Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM). And the effect of soil aggregation on acetamiprid environmental behavior was investigated by adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherms, and leaching. The results shown that the three-dimensional network structure of ASA/Ca 2+ hydrogel can promote the formation of soil aggregation. Aggregate durability index (ADI) was 0.55 in the presence of ASA/Ca 2+ hydrogel, indicating that amphiphilic hydrogel can enhance the stability of soil aggregation. The adsorbing capacity of acetamiprid was 1.58 times higher than pure soil, and the release of acetamiprid only about 20% in the presence of ASA/Ca 2+ hydrogel. These results would be helpful for the formation of soil aggregation and pesticides adsorption on soil aggregation. Thus, ASA/Ca 2+ hydrogel is likely to improve soil quality, simultaneously it can minimize the mobility of pesticides in the agricultural system.
