Tungsten oxide (WO 3 ) is a well-known photocatalyst, but its application is restricted due to its low conduction band and reduction power. In addition, WO 3 catalyst in powder forms has little application prospect because of difficulties in separation and regeneration. In this work, we prepared WO 3 /Ag/AgCl films on conventional glass that not only have much enhanced photocatalytic capability but also can be readily regenerated. The WO 3 film was prepared on glass substrate by calcination of spin-coated W precursor. Ag/AgCl particles were then deposited on WO 3 film by an impregnating–precipitation–photoreduction method. The photocatalytic efficiency of WO 3 /Ag/AgCl was evaluated by using methyl orange (MO) and Rhodamine B (RhB) as target pollutants. The highest photocatalytic performance was achieved with the 3-WO 3 /Ag/AgCl film, being 18 and 13 times higher than that of pure WO 3 film for degradation of MO and RhB, respectively. The degradation rate for both MO and RhB by 3-WO 3 /Ag/AgCl film catalyst decreased by less than 5% after five cycled tests. The photodegradation mechanism was discussed based on the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy Nyquist tests, photoelectrochemical analysis and reactive oxygen species scavenging experiments. A possible all-solid-state Z-scheme mechanism is proposed based on the photoelectron chemical tests and radical trapping experiments. This study provides a feasible technique to prepare a photocatalytic film with practicability and reproducibility.

In this research, AgCl/Ag/AgCl core-shell microstructures have been synthesized at room temperature through a facile in situ method. The as-synthesized unique microstructures were characterized by SEM-EDS, XRD, XPS, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. And their photocatalytic activities were evaluated by degradation of methyl orange (MO) under UV, visible and sunlight irradiation. Comparing with the commercially available P25-TiO 2 and AgCl/Ag core-shell microstructures, our as-prepared samples gave the highest reactivity (almost 100% decomposition in 20 min) under direct sunlight irradiation. Their excellent photocatalytic activities are ascribed to the unique three-layered AgCl/Ag/AgCl core-shell microstructures, leading to improved electron-hole (e − -h + ) separation efficiency and promoting the inside charge carriers promptly transferred to the surfaces. In addition, their photocatalytic activity did not show any loss after four-time recycles, revealing high stability. In brief, the as-synthesized three-layered AgCl/Ag/AgCl core-shell microstructures exhibit their promising potential as efficient sunlight-driven photocatalysts for organic pollutants degradation.

Ag@AgCl core–shell nanowires were synthesized by oxidation of Ag nanowires with moderate FeCl 3 , which exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity for As(III) oxidation under visible light. It was proved that the photocatalytic oxidation efficiency was significantly dependent on the mole ratio of Ag:AgCl. The oxidation rate of As(III) over Ag@AgCl core–shell nanowires first increased with the decrease of Ag 0 percentage, up until the optimized synthesis mole ratio of Ag nanowires:FeCl 3 was 2.32:2.20, with 0.023 mg L −1 min −1 As(III) oxidation rate; subsequently, the oxidation rate dropped with the further decrease of Ag 0 percentage. Effects of the pH, ionic strength, and concentration of humic acid on Ag@AgCl photocatalytic ability were also studied. Trapping experiments using radical scavengers confirmed that h + and ·O 2
− acted as the main active species during the visible-light-driven photocatalytic process for As(III) oxidation. The recycling experiments validated that Ag@AgCl core–shell nanowires were a kind of efficient and stable photocatalyst for As(III) oxidation under visible-light irradiation.

A h-WO 3 decorated Ag–AgCl composite was prepared through facile precipitation and photoreduction methods and demonstrated to be a highly efficient and stable photocatalyst for the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light. Ag–AgCl/h-WO 3 exhibited much improved photocatalytic performance was elucidated from the physical–chemical properties of AgCl and h-WO 3 and the surface plasmon resonance effect of the Ag particles. The techniques of X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS) and photocurrent were used to characterize crystalline phases, morphology, composition and separation efficiency between electrons (e − ) and holes (h + ) of the synthesized composite photocatalyst. XPS results confirmed the existence of W 5+ and W 6+ on the surface of h-WO 3 sample, which favored electrons transfer between AgCl and Ag, and generated superoxide radical for the degradation of RhB. The active species trapping experiments results further demonstrated that the formation of superoxide radical during the system. Finally, the underlying photocatalytic mechanism for the removal of RhB by Ag–AgCl/h-WO 3 composite was examined.

Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) gel is an ideal substrate for supporting sunlight responsive photocatalysts, but the photocatalytic disinfection activity decreased due to the light-shielding effect of the gel. In order to enhance the formation of active oxygen species, polydopamine (PDA) was introduced in CMC gels to function as an intermediate to connect two semiconductors inside the gels via its quinhydrone charge-transfer complexation. CMC/PDA gel with a double-network was formed via chemical crosslinking and reversible hydrogen bonding between prepolymerized PDA and CMC, then Ag/AgCl, ZnO and Ag/AgCl/ZnO photocatalysts were formed in situ in CMC/PDA gel, respectively. Ag/AgCl/ZnO heterojunction loaded composite gel displayed a remarkable photocatalytic degradation activity, with a weight ratio of the degraded methyl orange divided by composite gels up to 0.00090 under sunlight irradiation for 30 min. Ag/AgCl/ZnO loaded gel presented the bactericidal rate of 99.9 % against E. coli and 99.8 % against S. aureus . The inhibition zone of Ag/AgCl/ZnO loaded composite gel with dopamine mass of 100 mg increased under 6 h of sunlight compared with 24 h in dark against both E. coli and S. aureus . The biocompatible Ag/AgCl/ZnO loaded composite gel with pH-responsive swelling property and sunlight-responsive antibacterial activity promised to broaden the application of CMC-based antibacterial gels.

Controllable morphological metal catalytic materials have always been a focus in research. In the previous work, hexapod AgCl was successfully synthesized. In this paper, hexapod Ag@AgCl microstructures with diverse Ag contents are prepared through NaBH4reduction. They are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the element distribution is proved by an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS). They are porous dendritic microstructures with a large specific surface area and a rough surface, which display high catalytic performance and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) activity. Furthermore, the hexapod Ag@AgCl microstructure is devoted as a dual catalyst to monitor the reduction of 4-nitrothiophenol (4-NTP) to 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP) in situ using SERS. Ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectroscopy was employed to evaluate the catalytic performance of the hexapod Ag@AgCl microstructures. The consequences show that the velocity of reaction became faster with a corresponding increase in silver content and the reaction mechanism was cleared. In addition to preparing a good catalyst, this work also promotes the combination of micro-nano materials and spectroscopy technology.Keywords:Ag@AgCl microstructure;in situ monitoring;surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy;4-nitrothiophenol reduction

The presence of acetaminophen (ACT) used for painkillers has attracted great attention in the world, which have potentially adverse effects on aquatic lives and human beings. Advanced oxidation technology applied to water repair has received increasing concerns in recent years. In this study, photodegradation ACT in aqueous solution over Ag/AgCl@ZIF-8 synthesised by a simple stirring method was investigated under visible light irradiation. The prepared photocatalyst was characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectra (UV-vis). The degradation rates of ACT under different parameters were studied to get the optimal operating conditions in water. Results showed that the photodegradation process fitted pseudo-first order model well. 99% ACT degradation achieved when Ag/AgCl@ZIF-8 was delivered to the solution compared with ZIF-8 and Ag/AgCl with the maximum value of constant ( k app ). The degradation rate obviously slowed down when the initial concentration of ACT increased to 2 mg/L while it increased with the increasing of dosage of photocatalyst. In contrast, pH has little effect on the degradation of ACT over Ag/AgCl@ZIF-8. The Ag/AgCl@ZIF-8 showed high efficiency for degradation after three repeated cycles which demonstrated the prepared photocatalyst has high stability. The O 2 − turned out to be the main active group during the photodegradation process responsible for the disappearance of ACT. Intermediate products analysis results by LC-MS showed that photolysis was the first step of photocatalytic degradation for ACT followed by a ring cleavage.

We report a novel method to prepare translucent and stable Ag@AgCl/g-C 3 N 4 /TiO 2 ceramic films having strong photocatalytic activities and self-cleaning capabilities under light irradiation. Colloidal silica was used as an inorganic binder and P25 TiO 2 was added as a hydrophilicity enhancer without which a smooth coating was not achievable. Ag@AgCl of particle size around 30 nm, was synthesized by in-situ oxidation of nano-silver particles in porous g-C 3 N 4 /TiO 2 films. Optimal conditions for Ag@AgCl/g-C 3 N 4 /TiO 2 preparation in terms of strongest photocatalysis were established by tests on Rhodamine B degradation under visible and full spectral irradiations. A good adhesion strength of the porous films on glass substrate was achieved. Stability and reusability of the films were assessed by cycling tests. Possible photocatalytic mechanisms are proposed based on the basis of trapping experiments. Systematic characterization of the film suggests that the in-situ oxidation is an effective and practical method to produce nanoscale Ag@AgCl.

Photocatalytic removal of organic pollution such as waste colored dyes was a promising technique for environment technique. However, effective photocatalysts were needed to enhance the photocatalytic efficiency. Ag/AgCl was regarded as high performance catalyst for photocatalytic degradation. Ag/AgCl nanoparticles were biochemically prepared with metabolin of living fungi which was used as reductant and characterized by X-Ray diffraction (XRD), UV-visible spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The Ag/AgCl nanoparticle composites showed spherical aggregation shape with an average size of about 3–5 nm which is well inside the quantum regime. The UV-visible study showed that Ag/AgCl nanoparticles had strong visible light absorption and exhibited excellent visible-light-driven photocatalytic performance. Photocatalytic results indicated that the obtained Ag/AgCl nanoparticles were suitable for photocatalytic removal of RhB dye under visible light irradiation. The excellent photocatalytic activities could be attributed to the quantum size nanoparticles and the Plasmon resonance of Ag/AgCl composites.

Photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants in water represents a highly promising strategy for environmental remediation. However, conventional photocatalysts are hampered by their inefficient employment of visible light energy and the propensity of photoinduced charge carriers to undergo recombination. To overcome these limitations, Z-scheme photocatalyst UiO-66-NO 2 @ Ag/AgCl (UiO@Ag-X, where X denotes the Ag/AgCl content) composites were designed and prepared. The crystal structure, morphology, photocatalytic performance, light absorption capacity, and carrier separation efficiency were systematically tested. Optical and electrochemical measurements revealed that the incorporation of Ag/AgCl enhanced the segregation and transfer efficiency of charge, which is crucial for boosting photocatalytic activity. These improvements directly contributed to the enhanced degradation efficiency observed in subsequent experiments. In experiments using methyl violet (MV) as the model pollutant, the photocatalytic degradation performance of UiO@Ag-X samples was evaluated. Among these samples, UiO@Ag-50 achieved a remarkable degradation efficiency under light irradiation. Moreover, the corresponding kinetic rate constant was about 0.04724 min -1 , which was higher than that of UiO-66-NO 2 . Quenching experiments were employed to investigate the mechanisms related to photocatalysis. The results show that hydroxyl radicals play an important role in the degradation of MV.

A novel plasmonic photocatalysts of Ag/AgCl-Bi 2 MoO 6 was successfully synthesized via a simple and mild wet-chemical process. The physical and photophysical properties of the as-prepared Ag/AgCl-Bi 2 MoO 6 samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), Ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflection spectroscopy (DRS), electron spin resonance (ESR), photoluminescence emission spectra (PL) and surface photovoltage spectroscopy (SPV). The interaction between Ag/AgCl and Bi 2 MoO 6 has been investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, and which is facile to the electron transfer between Ag/AgCl and Bi 2 MoO 6 and result in the enhancing photocatalytic activity of Ag/AgCl-Bi 2 MoO 6 composite. The photocatalytic experiments indicate that the Ag/AgCl species can efficiently promote the separation efficiency of photo-generated charge carriers in Bi 2 MoO 6 , and consequently improve the RhB photodegradation activity. The 20 wt% Ag/AgCl-Bi 2 MoO 6 sample shows the highest photocatalytic activity, the degradation constant of 20 wt% Ag/AgCl-Bi 2 MoO 6 was as high as 4 times to that of pure Bi 2 MoO 6 . A possible catalytic mechanism for Ag/AgCl-Bi 2 MoO 6 is proposed, which can be attributed to the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect from Ag/AgCl species.

Conventional ZnO powder catalysts possess excellent stability and photocatalytic activity, but have great difficulties for separation and regeneration after the reaction and require ultraviolet irradiation (less than 5% of solar energy), thus restricting practical applications. In this paper, unique short submicron wire-like ZnO films were successfully prepared on silicate glass substrates by calcination of spin-coated zinc acetate solution in the presence of ethanolamine (EA). A typical synthesis yields ZnO submicron wires with ca. 50–120 nm in diameter, 15–30 μm in length and 0.5–1.5 μm in height. Ag@AgCl particles were deposited on short ZnO submicron wire films by a simple impregnating-precipitation-photoreduction method. The as-prepared Ag@AgCl/ZnO film exhibited efficient photocatalytic performance under visible light irradiation and excellent self-cleaning capability under solar light. This film photocatalysts were easy to separate from the reaction, and the tests showed that the films were reusable for four times without significantly loosing efficiency. Additionally, gas chromatography–mass spectroscopy (GC–MS) was applied to investigate the degraded chemical species resulted from the photo-catalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) dyes under Ag@AgCl/ZnO. A possible photocatalytic mechanism was proposed based on the photoelectrochemical measurements and radical trapping experiments.
