Superior photocatalytic disinfection effect of Ag-3D ordered mesoporous CeO2 under visible light

Qixing Zhou,Shuanglong Ma,Sihui Zhan

Ordered mesoporous Ag/CeO 2 nanocomposites were prepared by combining nanocasting with photo-assisted reduction. The heterogeneous photoreactivity of the prepared samples was tested for inactivating Escherichia coli ( E. coli ). These mesoporous Ag/CeO 2 nanocomposites exhibited superior photocatalytic disinfection efficiency than mesoporous CeO 2 and bulk CeO 2 , respectively. Doping Ag species could extend the absorption range to visible light area and enhance the concentration of Ce 3+ ions and oxygen vacancies, which had significant influence on the surface properties of CeO 2 . Moreover, it is the first time to verify that created midgap states through doping Ag can significantly lower the threshold of incident photon energy and broaden the adsorption spectrum demonstrated by experimental studies and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The enhanced disinfection mechanism was attributed to the fact that the novel mesoporous structure can promote the mass transfer process and the interfacial interaction between Ag species and CeO 2 and lead to reduced recombination of free charges, rapid separation and transportation of photogenerated electrons-holes. This work provides a new method to develop novel mesoporous plasmonic photocatlysts for disinfection using solar radiation.

Facile synthesis of Ag@CeO2 core–shell plasmonic photocatalysts with enhanced visible-light photocatalytic performance

Linen Wu,Siman Fang,Lei Ge,Changcun Han,Ping Qiu,Yongji Xin

Novel Ag@CeO 2 core–shell nanostructures with well-controlled shape and shell thickness were successfully synthesized via a green and facile template-free approach in aqueous solution. As-prepared samples were characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflection spectroscopy (DRS), electron spin resonance (ESR) and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). The structures with different core shapes and controllable shell thickness exhibited unique optical properties. It is found that the nanoscale Ag@CeO 2 core–shell photocatalysts exhibit significantly enhanced photocatalytic activities in the O 2 evolution and MB dye degradation compared to pure CeO 2 nanoparticals. The enhancement in photocatalytic activities can be ascribed to the localized surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of Ag cores. Moreover, larger active interfacial areas and contact between metal/semiconductor in the core–shell structure facilitate transfer of charge carriers and prolong lifetime of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. It is expected that the Ag@CeO 2 core–shell structure may have great potential in a wider range of light-harvesting applications.

Catalytic wet peroxide degradation of acrylonitrile wastewater by ordered mesoporous Ag/CeO2: synthesis, performance and kinetics

Guozheng Zhao,Hui Liang,Hongzhu Xu,Changbo Li,Qingwei Tan,Daihang Zhang

Ordered mesoporous Ag/CeO2 catalysts have been successfully synthesized by a microwave assisted soft template method. The morphology, structure and chemical composition of the catalyst were characterized by XRD, N2 adsorption–desorption, SEM, EDS, TEM and XPS. The study of catalytic performance and reaction kinetics of organic matter degradation in acrylonitrile wastewater was performed in a catalytic wet peroxide (CWPO) system. The degradation pathways of organic matter in acrylonitrile wastewater were elucidated by temporal evolution of intermediates and final products detected by GC/MS analysis along with a continuous flow experiment study. The results show that the Ag/CeO2 has an ordered mesoporous structure, the specific surface area is 91.4–118.2 m2 g−1 and the average pore size is 12.63–16.86 nm. 0.4-Ag/CeO2 showed the best catalytic performance, the COD removal rate reached 94.6%, which was 30% higher than that of CeO2. The degradation is in accordance with the second-order reaction kinetics of the Arrhenius empirical model and Langmuir–Hinshelwood kinetic model. However the latter fits better, and the linear correlation coefficient R2 is more than 0.98, which describes the adsorption catalytic mechanism of Ag/CeO2. According to the analysis by GC/MS, the organic compounds in acrylonitrile wastewater oxidized into intermediate compounds and other small compounds, then are further oxidized into carbon dioxide and water. The catalytic activity of Ag/CeO2 was the result of the combination of Lewis acid–base position of CeO2 and redox cycle of Ce3+/Ce4+.

Enhancing Antioxidant and Cytotoxic Properties of CeO2 Through Silver Decoration: A Study on Ag@CeO2 Nanocomposites

Chen Yang,Jingjing He,Siying Chen,Qiuping Li,Xuexia Lin

In this study, silver-decorated cerium oxide (Ag@CeO2) nanoparticles were synthesized through a simple mixing and pyrolysis process to enhance their antioxidant and antitumor properties. The synthesis methods for Ag@CeO2were optimized, resulting in nanoparticles with varying antioxidant activities. Notably, the embedding of Ag nanoparticles within CeO2during pyrolysis significantly improved the antioxidant activity and stability of the nanoparticles, leading to enhanced antitumor effects. The Ag@CeO2nanoparticles exhibited strong cytotoxicity against tumor cells (MCF-7) while maintaining low toxicity toward normal cells (HUVECs). These properties, combined with their ability to modulate mitochondrial membrane potential, position Ag@CeO2as a promising candidate for electrochemical therapy (ECT). This study highlights the antioxidant potential and the potential of Ag@CeO2nanoparticles in tumor treatment and provides new insights into the application of nanomaterials in ECT.

Soot oxidation over CeO2 and Ag/CeO2: Factors determining the catalyst activity and stability during reaction

Shuang Liu,Xiaodong Wu,Wei Liu,Wenming Chen,Rui Ran,Min Li,Duan Weng

Three model ceria catalysts, which are monocrystalline CeO 2 nanocubes, polycrystalline CeO 2 nanoparticles, and polycrystalline CeO 2 spindles, were synthesized and analyzed with isothermal soot oxidation, H 2 -TPR, and Raman spectroscopy. The results suggest that the initial activity of the catalyst is determined by the number of catalyst–soot contact points rather than the catalyst surface area, while the catalyst stability is closely related to the concentration of surface oxygen vacancies . Excessive surface oxygen vacancies may inhibit the regeneration of highly active O 2 − and lead to catalyst deactivation during reaction. After impregnation with Ag, O − can be readily regenerated and transformed to O 2 − , resulting in a 10-fold increase in soot oxidation activity over Ag/CeO 2 . Among these catalysts, Ag supported on nanocubic CeO 2 exhibits good availability of O 2 − and therefore high catalytic activity and stability, and is thus considered a promising catalyst for application in gasoline particulate filters.

Toward Maximizing the Ag–CeO2 Interface and Rich Oxygen Vacancies for Efficient Photocatalytic Oxidation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural

Shiling Zhao,Kaizhi Wang,Shaoqi Mao,Beibei Yang,Yu Zhao

In the pursuit of high-selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to valuable derivatives such as 5-hydroxymethylfuroic acid (HMFCA), 5-formyl-2-furanoic acid (FFCA), and furan-2,5-dicarboxylic acid (FDCA), we have developed a diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA)-assisted strategy to construct a highly effective photothermal catalyst with maximized Ag–CeO2 interfaces and rich oxygen vacancies. Under optimal reaction conditions, this catalyst achieves remarkable yields of 99% for HMFCA, 99% for FFCA with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 163 h–1, and 98% for FDCA. Combined theoretical calculations and a series of characterization analyses reveal that the superior performance is due to the unique properties of the maximized Ag–CeO2 interfaces and the rich oxygen vacancies, which enhance electron transport and synergistically enhance the catalytic activity of silver clusters. In contrast to other photocatalytic oxidation systems for HMF, this work showcases high selectivity in the oxidation of HMF to HMFCA, FFCA, and FDCA. These findings not only elucidate the mechanisms behind selective oxidation but also offer a promising approach for the directional photosynthesis of high-purity chemicals in related applications.

Plasma-engineered Ag/CeO2 catalysts with enhanced surface active oxygen species for catalytic oxidation of VOCs and soot

Hongyan Huang,Zihao Li,Zewen Chen,Shengji Wu,Hui Wang,Jie Zhou

As primary precursors of particulate matter (PM), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and soot have emerged as major contributors to air pollution in recent decades. It is urgent and significant to develop high-performance catalysts for the catalytic oxidation of VOCs and soot. In this work, we report a feasible approach for the preparation of Ag-supported CeO 2 catalysts (Ag/CeO 2 -HP) via the combination of impregnation and plasma treatment, and evaluate their performance in catalytic oxidation. Comprehensive characterization results demonstrate that the non-thermal plasma treatment can effectively enhance the dispersion of Ag nanoparticles and enrich the concentration of surface oxygen vacancies in the catalyst. Furthermore, Ag/CeO 2 -HP possesses the highest concentration of the highly surface active oxygen species. Thus, Ag/CeO 2 -HP exhibits the highest catalytic activity for catalytic oxidation of VOCs and soot among all the catalysts prepared. The T max value for soot over Ag/CeO 2 -HP is 383 °C, compared to 409 °C over Ag/CeO 2 prepared by the conventional equivalent-volume impregnation method. Under demanding reaction conditions (1000 ppm hexane, GHSV 75,000 h −1 ), the T 98 values for n-hexane over the Ag/CeO 2 -HP and Ag/CeO 2 catalysts are 295 and 339 °C, respectively. The work provides an efficient strategy to prepare supported catalysts with enhanced catalytic activity.

Construction of schottky-assisted Z-scheme heterojunction Cd0.3Zn0.7S@Ti3C2/Ag/CeO2 boosted carriers charge separation for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production

Fang Chen,Mingkun Wu,Yuzhi Xu,Jianjun Zhang,Jun Luo,Mengkui Tian

The purposeful modulation of interfacial charge transfer pathways in heterogeneous structures is an innovative and feasible strategy to improve photocatalysis efficiency. However, it is often characterized by difficulties in charge separation and transport and the high charge recombination limits its applications. Herein, a Cd 0.3 Zn 0.7 S-based heterostructure of Cd 0.3 Zn 0.7 S@Ti 3 C 2 /Ag/CeO 2 was fabricated in which the efficient electron transfer route was designed by synergistic action of Z-scheme and Schottky junction. Serial characterizations and Density-Functional Theory calculations identify the Schottky junction promoted the electrons in Cd 0.3 Zn 0.7 S to transfer to Ti 3 C 2 , whereas the Z-scheme heterojunction accelerated the electrons transfer from CeO 2 to Cd 0.3 Zn 0.7 S@Ti 3 C 2 with Ag acting as the electronic intermediary. Significantly, the optimized Cd 0.3 Zn 0.7 S@Ti 3 C 2 /Ag/CeO 2 exhibited stronger photocatalytic H 2 evolution of 16.3 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 with an apparent quantum efficiency of 29.8 % at 420 nm, which was 4.2 times higher than the pristine Cd 0.3 Zn 0.7 S material. This work offers valuable insights into realizing the desired charge transfer route through artificial heterointerface and a new possibility for applying Cd 1-x Zn x S materials in photocatalytic hydrogen production.
