A core–shell–shell sandwich material is developed with silver nanowires as the core, ZIF-8 as an inner shell, and gold nanoparticles as the outer shell, namely, Ag@ZIF-8@Au nanowires (AZA-NW). Then, the synthesized AZA-NW is transformed into a surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensor (named M-AZA) by the vacuum filtration method and used to enrich, detect, and inactivate traces of bacteria in the environment. The M-AZA sensor has three main functions: (1) trace bacteria are effectively enriched, with an enrichment efficiency of 91.4%; (2) ultrasensitive detection of trace bacteria is realized, with a minimum detectable concentration of 1 × 101 CFU/mL; (3) bacteria are effectively killed up to 92.4%. The shell thickness of ZIF-8 (5–75 nm) is controlled by adjusting the synthesis conditions. At an optimum shell thickness of 15 nm, the effect of gold nanoparticles and ZIF-8 shell on the sensor’s stability, SERS activity, and antibacterial performance is investigated. The simulation of the SERS sensor using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method is consistent with the experimental results, theoretically demonstrating the role of the gold nanoparticles and the ZIF-8 shell. The sensor also shows excellent stability, safety, and generalizability. The campus water sample is then tested on-site by the M-AZA SERS sensor, indicating its potential for practical applications.

Surface-enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) has emerged as a powerful and sensitive technique for the detection of various molecules, including gaseous analytes. However, the development of efficient, stable, and reusable SERS substrates for gaseous molecule remains a challenge. This work introduces a novel Cu-Ag@ZIF-8 film for SERS detection of gaseous molecule, which consists of Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) core and ZIF-8 porous shell on Cu foils. With strong enhancement of electromagnetic field by AgNPs core and effective caption of gaseous molecule by ZIF-8 porous shell, this substrate exhibits good SERS performance of p-aminothiophenol (PATP) and 4-mercaptophenol (DP) gaseous molecules, whose limit of detection (LOD) could reach 9.12 × 10 −10 M and 9.91 × 10 −9 M, respectively. Furthermore, the detection of gaseous benzaldehyde diffused by oil paint is explored by this developed SERS substrate for application. To achieve accurate identification of harmful gaseous molecule in complex volatile organic compounds (VOC), the deep learning (DL) approach is performed based on SERS spectra obtained from this Cu-Ag@ZIF-8 film. Our results demonstrate that the identification of gaseous benzaldehyde in VOC diffused from commercial oil paint has a high accuracy at 97.7% with the help of ANN algorithms, which points out the Cu-Ag@ZIF-8 film has good performance and huge potential for SERS detection of gaseous molecule.

Melamine-impregnated paper, a decorative material in furniture and interior design, could potentially impede the spread of indoor bacteria if it possesses antibacterial properties. Here, nano Ag-doped ZIF-8 (Ag@ZIF-8) was synthesized using ion exchange and in-situ chemical reduction strategies, followed by incorporating it into melamine-impregnated paper. The ion exchange mechanism of Zn 2+ and Ag + during ion exchange reactions was investigated. The structure of Ag@ZIF-8 was well-defined, with Ag nanoparticles evenly distributed on the surface of ZIF-8. Ag@ZIF-8 showed good thermal stability at 400 °C, meeting the requirements for the hot-pressing process of the melamine-impregnated paper. Ag@ZIF-8 exhibited enhanced ROS generation under visible light compare to ZIF-8, which was attributed to its reinforced light absorption and charge carrier separation facilitated by the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect. The antibacterial activity of Ag@ZIF-8 was better than ZIF-8, owing to the multiple-synergistic antibacterial mechanisms of the ion release and ROS generation. Specifically, the 10-Ag@ZIF-8 exhibited MIC of 128 μg/mL and 64 μg/mL against E. coli and S. aureus , respectively. The signal intensity of •O 2 − induced by 10-Ag@ZIF-8 was 4.38 times higher than that of ZIF-8. As the addition of Ag@ZIF-8 increased, the antibacterial performance of melamine-impregnated paper improved. Considering the antibacterial property and economy of melamine-impregnated paper, 0.20 wt% was the optimal amount for 10-Ag@ZIF-8 decorated blockboard. This study proposes a novel approach for synthesizing MOF-based melamine-impregnated paper with antibacterial properties, aiming to reduce bacterial spread, minimize disease risks, and contribute to lowering overall healthcare costs.

In this work, a high-performance lychee-like plasmonic nanocomplex with programmable hierarchical structure (Ag@ZIF-8@Au) was successfully fabricated as surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) platform via layer-by-layer assembly for sensitive detection of diazepam (DZP). ZIF-8 has good pre-enrichment for DZP as well as works as a skeleton for preventing aggregation of plasmonic nanoparticles, dramatically boosting sensitivity, stability and reproducibility of the SERS substrate. Furthermore, lychee-like Ag@ZIF-8@Au nanostructures provided numerous SERS “hot spots” for generating the synergistic enhancement effects including lightning rod and resonance coupling effects. By leveraging Ag@ZIF-8@Au substrate, DZP can be exquisitely detected. The detection limit plummets to 0.126 ng mL −1 , while a broad linear detection span of 10 −9 –10 −2 g mL −1 is achieved. Additionally, Ag@ZIF-8@Au can be utilized to identify DZP in aquatic products with a satisfactory recovery rate of 85.3 % to 111.9 %, which indicates its good practical applicability and great potential for monitoring safety of aquatic products.

A facile approach was successfully developed for synthesis of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC)-supported magnetic CuFe2O4@Ag@ZIF-8 nanospheres which consist of a paramagnetic CuFe2O4@Ag core and porous ZIF-8 shell. The CuFe2O4nanoparticles (NPs) were first prepared in the presence of CNC and dispersant. Ag NPs were then deposited on the CuFe2O4/CNC composites via an in situ reduction directed by dopamine polymerization (PDA). The CuFe2O4/CNC@Ag@ZIF-8 nanocomposite was characterized by TEM, FTIR, XRD, N2adsorption-desorption isotherms, VSM, and XPS. Catalytic studies showed that the CuFe2O4/CNC@Ag@ZIF-8 catalyst had much higher catalytic activity than CuFe2O4@Ag catalyst with the rate constant of 0.64 min−1. Because of the integration of ZIF-8 with CuFe2O4/CNC@Ag that combines the advantaged of each component, the nanocomposites were demonstrated to have an enhanced catalytic activity in heterogeneous catalysis. Therefore, these results demonstrate a new method for the fabrication of CNC-supported magnetic core-shell catalysts, which display great potential for application in biocatalysis and environmental chemistry.Keywords:CuFe2O4nanoparticles;cellulose nanocrystals;Ag nanoparticles;ZIF-8 catalysis;4-nitrophenol reduction

PS@Ag@ZIF-8 sensor is constructed via room-temperature in-situ growth on monolayer colloidal crystals. • Introduced Ag nanoparticles greatly improve the sensor's optical features and structural color saturation. • The sensor selectively detects acetonitrile and alcohols by visible color change and reflection peak shift. • Fast response (<3 s), good recyclability for acetonitrile and high stability are achieved. • The design inspires low-cost portable gas sensors for environmental monitoring. In this work, we fabricated a high-performance optical sensor PS@Ag@ZIF-8 by sequentially depositing silver nanoparticles (NPs) and MOF thin films on the monolayer colloidal crystals surface via an in-situ growth method at room temperature. The rational introduction of silver NPs into the sensor structure remarkably improves its optical properties and structural color saturation. This sensor possesses excellent selective detection capability toward acetonitrile and alcohols. Moreover, the type and concentration of volatile organic pollutants (VOCs) vapors can be visually analyzed according to the shift of reflection peaks and distinct color differences in optical images. Meanwhile, it delivers an ultrafast response (<3 s) along with outstanding repeatability and recyclability. More importantly, it possesses a wide dynamic detection range, great linearity and exhibits excellent stability during operation. It is anticipated that this sensor provides a valuable reference for the development of low-cost, real-time and portable gas sensors for environmental monitoring. The detection of gaseous molecules using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) remains challenging due to the rapid diffusion and low intensity of gas molecules. In this study, we developed a flexible and breathable SERS substrate by in-situ growth of Ag@ZIF-8 nanoparticles on electrospun nylon 6/6 fibers. The microchannels in the fiber membrane, combined with the high porosity of ZIF-8, enable effective capture and enrichment of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in SERS hot spots. The optimized substrate demonstrated a detection limit of 6.64 × 10 −8 M for dithiohydroquinone (DP) gas, along with excellent reproducibility, linear correlation (R 2 = 0.99), and stability over 30 days. Furthermore, using a residual neural network (RNN) model for deep learning analysis, the substrate achieved 100 % accuracy in detecting gaseous glutaraldehyde (GA), a typical VOC found in disinfectants. This study showcases the potential of nylon/Ag@ZIF-8 substrates, enhanced by artificial intelligence, for practical and precise detection of gaseous molecules in various environments.

The sensitive detection of quinalphos in food is crucial due to its improper use and the potential for serious harm. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) technology, provides a new way for rapid and ultra-sensitive detection. To exploit the molecular sieving effect of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in mitigating interference from food matrix components during pesticide residue detection, a novel chiral spiny L-Au@Ag@ZIF-8 (L-AAZ) three-layer core-shell composite was developed as an effective SERS substrate, with chiral L-AABPs providing abundant “hot spots” and spiny ZIF-8 shell provides excellent absorption properties, causing a five-fold increase in SERS intensity compared to traditional Au@Ag NPs. The experimental results revealed that L-AAZ achieved a high enhancement factor (EF) of 3.15 × 10 5 , a low limit of detection (LOD) of 6.56 × 10 −10 M, and a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 14.6 % for malachite green (MG), indicating its superior SERS sensitivity and consistency. Moreover, it demonstrated stable performance, maintaining good storage stability for up to 55 days. The substrate's suitability for the actual fruit sample (tangerine) was confirmed, showing an LOD of 10 ng/mL, demonstrating its capability for rapid and sensitive detection of trace amounts of pesticide residues in food.

Bacteria-induced keratitis is a major cause of corneal blindness in both developed and developing countries. Instillation of antibiotic eyedrops is the most common management of bacterial keratitis but usually suffers from low bioavailability (i.e., <5%) and frequent administration, due to the existence of corneal epithelial barrier that prevents large and hydrophilic drug molecules from entering the cornea, and the tear film on corneal surface that rapidly washes drug away from the cornea. Here, a self-implantable core–shell microneedle (MN) patch with programmed drug release property to facilitate bacterial keratitis treatment is reported. The pH-responsive antimicrobial nanoparticles (NPs), Ag@ZIF-8, which are capable of producing antibacterial metal ions in the infected cornea and generating oxidative stress in bacteria, are loaded in the dissolvable core, while the anti-angiogenic drug, rapamycin (Rapa), is encapsulated in the biodegradable shell, thereby enabling rapid release of Ag@ZIF-8 NPs and sustained release of Rapa after corneal insertion. Owing to the programmed release feature, one single administration of the core–shell MN patch in a rat model of bacterial keratitis, can achieve satisfactory antimicrobial activity and superior anti-angiogenic and anti-inflammation effects as compared to daily topical eyedrops, indicating a great potential for the infectious keratitis therapy in clinics.
