Real-time and objective feedback of therapeutic efficacies would be of great value for tumor treatment. Here, we report a smart Ag 2 S QD-based theranostic nanoplatform (DOX@PEG-Ag 2 S) obtained by loading the anti-cancer drug doxorubicin (DOX) into polyethylene glycol-coated silver sulfide quantum dots (PEG-Ag 2 S QDs) through hydrophobic-hydrophobic interactions, which exhibited high drug loading capability (93 wt.% of DOX to Ag 2 S QDs), long circulation in blood ( t
1/2 = 10.3 h), and high passive tumor-targeting efficiency (8.9% ID/gram) in living mice where % ID/gram reflects the probe concentration in terms of the percentage of the injected dose (ID) per gram of tissue. After targeting the tumor tissue, DOX from PEG-Ag 2 S cargoes was selectively and rapidly released into cancer cells, giving rise to a significant tumor inhibition. Owing to the deep tissue penetration and high spatio-temporal resolution of Ag 2 S QDs fluorescence in the second near-infrared window (NIR-II), the DOX@PEG-Ag 2 S enabled real-time in vivo reading of the drug targeting process and therapeutic efficacy. We expect that such a novel theranostic nanoplatform, DOX@PEG-Ag 2 S, with integrated drug delivery, therapy and assessment functionalities, will be highly useful for personalized treatments of tumors.

Ag2S quantum dots (QDs) emitting in the second near-infrared region (NIR-II, 1.0–1.4 μm) are demonstrated as a promising fluorescent probe with both bright photoluminescence and high biocompatibility for the first time. Highly selective in vitro targeting and imaging of different cell lines are achieved using biocompatible NIR-II Ag2S QDs with different targeting ligands. The cytotoxicity study illustrates the Ag2S QDs with negligible effects in altering cell proliferation, triggering apoptosis and necrosis, generating reactive oxygen species, and causing DNA damage. Our results have opened up the possibilities of using these biocompatible Ag2S QDs for in vivo anatomical imaging and early stage tumor diagnosis with deep tissue penetration, high sensitivity, and elevated spatial and temporal resolution owing to their high emission efficiency in the unique NIR-II imaging window.

A photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing platform for the detection of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and its inhibitor F– ions was developed based on the Ag2S/Bi2S3 composite. The signal variation strategy was triggered by the in situ formation and consumption of the electron donor. Ag2S quantum dots (QDs) on the Bi2S3 surface effectively suppress the recombination of photogenerated carriers, leading to an enhanced photocurrent response. After ALP is immobilized on the Ag2S/Bi2S3 surface, the in situ catalyzed hydrolysis of l-ascorbic acid 2-phosphate trisodium salt (AAP) appeared, resulting in the production of ascorbic acid (AA). AA acts as an electron donor, enhancing the photocurrent and offering a strategy for quantifying ALP activity. Sodium fluoride (NaF) induces a reduction in ALP activity, and by exposing the sensing platform to various concentrations of NaF, the inhibition of ALP can be identified. The developed PEC sensor demonstrates outstanding detection performance for NaF, featuring a linear concentration range from 100 pM to 20 μM and a low detection limit of 1.28 pM. The integration of Ag2S/Bi2S3 to the in situ formation of electron donors in PEC technology presents an innovative approach for detecting ALP activity and its inhibitors. This platform delivers enhanced sensitivity and selectivity, making it valuable for diverse applications in detecting enzyme activity and screening their inhibitors in biofluid and food samples.

Fumonisin B 1 (FB 1 ) is a mycotoxin mainly found in corn, peanuts, and wheat crops, which affects human health. Based on bismuth sulfide/bismuth oxychloride (Bi 2 S 3 /BiOCl) composite material, silver sulfide (Ag 2 S) was grown in situ as a quantum dot sensitization signal, and a photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor was designed by layer upon layer modification to detect FB 1 . Bi 2 S 3 /BiOCl has a wide range of visible light absorption, stable chemical properties, and a simple synthesis method. In the construction process, L-ascorbic acid (AA) is selected to provide electrons and inhibit photogenerated electron-hole (e - /h + ) recombination. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the detection range of the fabricated PEC aptasensor was 0.001 ~ 100 ng/mL, and the detection limit was 0.016 pg/mL. The prepared PEC aptasensor has high sensitivity, stability, and reproducibility. The combination of aptamer and PEC sensor provides a novel method for the application of PEC sensor in mycotoxin detection. Graphical

Ag2S quantum dots (QDs) show superior optical properties in the NIR-II region and display significant clinical potential with favorable biocompatibility. However, inherent defects of low targeting and poor solubility necessitate practical modification methods to achieve the theranostics of Ag2S QDs. Herein, we used rolling circle amplification (RCA) techniques to obtain long single-stranded DNA containing the PD-L1 aptamer and C-rich DNA palindromic sequence. The C-rich DNA palindromic sequences can specifically chelate Ag2+ and thus serve as a template to result in biomimetic mineralization and formation of pApt-Ag2S QDs. These QDs enable specific targeting and illuminate hot tumors with high PD-L1 expression effectively, serving as excellent molecular targeted probes. In addition, due to the high NIR-II absorption of Ag2S QDs, pApt-Ag2S QDs exhibit remarkable photothermal properties. And besides, polyvalent PD-L1 aptamers can recognize PD-L1 protein and effectively block the inhibitory signal of PD-L1 on T cells, enabling efficient theranostics through the synergistic effect of photothermal therapy and immune checkpoint blocking therapy. Summary, we enhance the biological stability and antibleaching ability of Ag2S QDs using long single-stranded DNA as a template, thereby establishing a theranostic platform that specifically targets PD-L1 high-expressing inflamed tumors and demonstrates excellent performance both in vitro and in vivo.

A new photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensor was developed using low-toxic Ag 2 S QDs as photoelectrochemically active species. Energy levels of Ag 2 S and Ag 2 Se QD were compared to explain their differences in the PEC performance. The preparation condition of Ag 2 S QD was optimized and its structure characterization was measured. Then the developed photoelectric active interface was used to detect glucose and MCF-7 cancer cell and showed the good sensitivity and specificity. Under optimal condition, detection limits of 3.2×10 −5 M for glucose and 98 cells/mL for MCF-7 cell were achieved. Thus, the prepared Ag 2 S QD could serve as an excellent and promising photoelectric active material in the PEC biosensor.

Ag2S quantum dots (QDs) have attracted increasing attention due to their appealing optical properties in the near-infrared regime. However, a full understanding of the quantum confinement effect of Ag2S QDs has not been achieved so far. Herein, for the first time, the size-dependent excited state optical properties of Ag2S QDs are systematically investigated by photoluminescence (PL), PL excitation (PLE), and time-resolved PL spectroscopy. Experimentally, we determine the exciton Bohr radius of Ag2S QDs as 2.2 nm, which is highly consistent with theoretical results.

A visible-light-driven photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor has been developed for the “signal-on” analysis of Hg 2+ by the synergetic combination of low-bandgap Ag 2 S and wide-bandgap ZnS quantum dots (QDs). Ag 2 S QDs were synthesized with bead-chain-like structure by the self-assembly route and further covalently bound with ZnS QDs to be coated onto the indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes. It was discovered that the ZnS@Ag 2 S-modified electrodes could display the visible-light-driven PEC behavior, of which Ag 2 S and ZnS QDs could act as the PEC sensitizer and Hg 2+ -recognition probe, respectively. More importantly, the photocurrent responses of the developed electrodes could be specifically turned on in the presence of Hg 2+ under the visible-light irradiation, presumably due to that Hg 2+ might conduct a Zn-to-Hg exchange on ZnS QDs to trigger the formation of HgS/ZnS@Ag 2 S heterojunction towards the enhanced electron-hole separation. The as-prepared PEC sensor could facilitate the detection of Hg 2+ with concentrations ranging from 0.010–1000 nM, with a detection limit of about 1.0 pM. Besides, the feasibility of practical applications of the developed PEC analysis strategy was verified by probing Hg 2+ in environmental water samples. Such a visible-light-driven PEC detection platform with the unique “turn-on” signal output may promise for the extensive applications for Hg 2+ evaluation.

Cow’s milk allergy is a prevalent food allergy, with β-lactoglobulin (β-Lg) identified as one of the major allergenic proteins in cow’s milk. The accurate detection of β-Lg is crucial for reducing the risk of allergic reactions. In this study, a novel label-free photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor was developed for the detection of β-Lg in milk, utilizing an In 2 O 3 /BiOBr heterojunction composite material. Sensitization of the heterojunction with Ag 2 S quantum dots (QDs) enhanced the photosensitivity, leading to a significant increase in photocurrent response. The In 2 O 3 /BiOBr heterojunction improved solar energy utilization and enhanced light absorption across the visible spectrum. The photocurrent signal intensity decreased proportionally with increasing β-Lg concentration due to the specific binding with the aptamer. Under optimized experimental conditions, the PEC aptasensor exhibited a wide linear detection range from 0.001 ng/mL to 100 ng/mL and achieved a detection limit of 2.31 pg/mL. The sensor proved excellent selectivity, stability, reproducibility, and a broad linear range, offering a promising method for β-Lg detection in real milk samples.

A nanoplatform based on Ag 2 S quantum dots (QDs) and tellurium nanorods (TeNRs) was developed for combined chemo-photothermal therapy guided by H 2 O 2 -activated near-infrared (NIR)-II fluorescence imaging. Polypeptide PC 10 AGRD-modified TeNRs and Ag 2 S QDs were co-encapsulated in 4T1 cell membrane to prepare a nanoplatform ( [email protected] ). Ag 2 S QDs and TeNRs in the [email protected] were used as a fluorescence probe and photosensitizer , and a chemotherapeutic prodrug and quenching agent to quench the fluorescence of Ag 2 S QDs, respectively. After the [email protected] was specifically targeted to the tumor site, the TeNRs were dissolved by the high concentration of H 2 O 2 at the tumor site to light up the fluorescence of Ag 2 S QDs for NIR-II fluorescence imaging. In addition, the generated toxic TeO 6 6− molecules decreased ATP production by selective cancer chemotherapy, which is beneficial for photothermal therapy. The elevated temperature due to photothermal therapy in turn promoted the chemical reaction in chemotherapy. In vitro and in vivo toxicity results showed that the [email protected] possesses high biocompatibility. Compared to single photothermal therapy and chemotherapy, the synergistic chemo-photothermal therapy can effectively suppress the growth of 4T1 tumor. This all-in-one nanoplatform provides a boulevard for the combination therapy of tumors guided by NIR-II fluorescence imaging. Statement of significance NIR-II fluorescence imaging shows the characteristics of low tissue absorption, reflection, and scattering, which can greatly reduce the influence of autofluorescence in vivo . However, the non-negligible effect of autofluorescence is still observed in fluorescence imaging in vivo . Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop a strategy of controlled release of fluorescence for accurate imaging and tumor therapy. Here, Ag 2 S quantum dots (QDs) with NIR-II fluorescence emission and good photothermal conversion efficiency are used as a fluorescence probe and photosensitizer, and tellurium nanorods (TeNRs) are used as a chemotherapeutic prodrug and quenching agent to quench the fluorescence of Ag 2 S QDs. This multiple nanoplatform provides an inspiration for the combination therapy of tumor guided by NIR-II fluorescence imaging.

In this paper, highly ordered titanium dioxide nanorod (TNR) arrays decorated with Ag-Ag 2 S quantum-dots (QDs) were synthesized on FTO substrate through hydrothermal treatment and in-situ vulcanization . The content of Ag 2 S QDs on Ag/TNR was controlled by changing the immersion time of Ag/TNR in the N-N-dimethyl formamide (DMF) solution containing dissolved sulfur element. The morphology, structure, composition and optical, photoelectric and photocatalytic properties of QDs/TNR arrays were studied in detail. In the visible range, the QDs/TNR array with a soaking time of 12 h exhibits the maximal photocurrent density (0.082 mA/cm 2 ) and photodegradation rate (62.2%), which is 5.5 and 1.85 times higher than that of pure TNR. The improvement of these properties could be attributed to synergy effect between Ag and Ag 2 S materials. That is, Ag QDs can stably capture and transmit photo-generated electrons from the TNR surface, whereas the Ag 2 S promoter is regarded as the interface active sites to enhance photocatalytic reactions. Therefore, the synergistic effect of Ag-Ag 2 S can significantly enhance the photoelectrochemical and photocatalytic properties of the TNR arrays.

Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a kind of mycotoxin. It widely exists in all kinds of mammals and has teratogenicity and cytotoxicity. In this paper, a label-free photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptamer sensor based on bismuth oxyiodide/cadmium tungstate (BiOI/CdWO 4 ) was designed to detect OTA. The BiOI/CdWO 4 heterojunction is an excellent optoelectronic active material with remarkable chemical stability. AgNO 3 and Na 2 S were selected to grow in situ to form Ag 2 S quantum dots, which were sensitized to enhance the absorption of visible light and promote the generation of photocurrent. In this system, with the increasing of OTA concentration, the photoelectric signal intensity reduces as the specific binding with aptamer. When the concentration of OTA is between 0.01 ng/mL and 50.00 ng/mL, the linear equation is I (μA) = 48.95 – 10.276 lg c ( c OTA , ng/mL), R 2 = 99.281, and the detection limit is 0.823 pg/mL. The newly designed PEC aptamer sensor has exceptional stability, sensitivity, and reproducibility, making it capable of detecting OTA effectively and sensitively.
