One of the challenges for the application of energetic materials is their energy-retaining capabilities after long-term storage. In this study, we report a facile method to fabricate superhydrophobic Al/Fe 2 O 3 nanothermite film by combining electrophoretic deposition and surface modification technologies. Different concentrations of dispersion solvents and additives are investigated to optimize the deposition parameters. Meanwhile, the dependence of deposition rates on nanoparticle concentrations is also studied. The surface morphology and chemical composition are characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. A static contact angles as high as 156° shows the superhydrophobicity of the nanothermite film. Natural and accelerated aging tests are performed and the thermal behavior is analyzed. Thermal analysis shows that the surface modification contributes to significantly improved energy-release characteristics for both fresh and aged samples, which is supposed to be attributed to the preignition reaction between Al 2 O 3 shell and FAS-17. Superhydrophobic Al/Fe 2 O 3 nanothermite film exhibits excellent long-time storage stability with 83.4% of energy left in natural aging test and 60.5% in accelerated aging test. This study is instructive to the practical applications of nanothermites, especially in highly humid environment.

Thermites are a class of significant energetic materials widely used in aerospace propulsion, explosion, pyrotechnics, thermal batteries, and power generation. Although nanothermites exhibit fast reaction rates and high energy density, micron-sized thermites remain of practical importance over nanothermites due to their low electrostatic discharge (ESD) sensitivity, lower cost, and smaller dead mass. Herein, we develop micron-sized core–shell gallium-based liquid metal-modified Al@Fe2O3 (GLM-Al@Fe2O3), which exhibits high energy density and low laser ignition energy. At an equivalence ratio of 1.3, the differential scanning calorimetry results show that the total heat release of GLM-Al@Fe2O3 reaches 2555 J·g–1, which is much higher than that of the control sample (1424 J·g–1) prepared by a similar process. The density of GLM-Al@Fe2O3 (φ = 1.3) was characterized by a gas pycnometer analyzer, and its volumetric energy density could reach 9.96 kJ·cm–3. Laser-ignited combustion performance of GLM-Al@Fe2O3 was markedly reinforced in terms of the decreased ignition energy. Additionally, the ESD ignition threshold of GLM-Al@Fe2O3 is higher than 1 J, which revealed that the as-prepared GLM-Al@Fe2O3 was insensitive to electrostatic discharge. The facile and efficient strategy in this work provides inspiration to enhance the energy output performance and maintain the ESD safety of micron-sized thermites, which could show great potential in various civilian and military applications.

Electrostatic self-assembly in organic solvent without intensively oxidative or corrosive environments, was adopted to prepare Al/Fe 2 O 3 /MWCNT nanostructured energetic materials as an energy generating material. The negatively charged MWCNT was used as a glue-like agent to direct the self-assembly of the well dispersed positively charged Al (fuel) and Fe 2 O 3 (oxide) nanoparticles . This spontaneous assembly method without any surfactant chemistry or other chemical and biological moieties decreased the aggregation of the same nanoparticles largely, moreover, the poor interfacial contact between the Al (fuel) and Fe 2 O 3 (oxide) nanoparticles was improved significantly, which was the key characteristic of high performance nanostructured energetic materials. In addition, the assembly process was confirmed as Diffusion-Limited Aggregation. The assembled Al/Fe 2 O 3 /MWCNT nanostructured energetic materials showed excellent performance with heat release of 2400 J/g, peak pressure of 0.42 MPa and pressurization rate of 105.71 MPa/s, superior to that in the control group Al/Fe 2 O 3 nanostructured energetic materials prepared by sonication with heat release of 1326 J/g, peak pressure of 0.19 MPa and pressurization rate of 33.33 MPa/s. Therefore, the approach, which is facile, opens a promising route to the high performance nanostructured energetic materials.

To investigate the effect of Ni on the performance of Al/Fe 2 O 3 thermite, Ni was introduced into the system, and an Al/Ni/Fe 2 O 3 ternary composite thermite (Al/Ni/Fe 2 O 3 -EPD) was successfully fabricated via electrophoretic deposition (EPD). A systematic comparison was conducted with physically mixed (PM) samples (Al/Ni/Fe 2 O 3 -PM). The morphology, structure, and thermal behavior of the samples were characterized by SEM-EDS, XRD, and TG-DSC analyses. The results indicate that the EPD-fabricated samples exhibit a dense structure and a more uniform component distribution, whereas the physically mixed samples show pronounced agglomeration of Ni. Thermal analysis demonstrates that the incorporation of Ni enhances the thermal stability of the thermite but suppresses the energy release process. Non-isothermal kinetic analysis further reveals that Ni reduces the overall reaction activity of the system, and EPD does not lead to a reduction in the activation energy of the Al/Ni/Fe 2 O 3 system. Mechanistic studies indicate that the reaction of Al/Ni/Fe 2 O 3 -EPD in air involves the thermite reaction between Al and Fe 2 O 3 , the direct oxidation of Al, Ni, and Fe, and the alloying reaction between Al and Ni. This work systematically evaluates the effects of the EPD process and Ni fuel addition on the performance of the Al/Fe 2 O 3 thermite system. By comparing the results with reported Al/B/Fe 2 O 3 and Al/Ti/Fe 2 O 3 systems, the study elucidates the synergistic and differentiated mechanisms of various composite fuels in thermite reactions, providing useful insights into the structural design and mechanistic investigation of multicomponent composite thermites.
