Infection diseases caused by Gram-negative pathogens are exceedingly difficult to treat because their characteristic outer membrane limits antibiotic entry. Herein, we report the development of main-chain polysulfoniums with different charge densities and amphiphilicities based on the quantitative methylation reaction. By regulating the membrane-disruption capability, the combined efficacy of polysulfoniums and antibiotic rifampicin can be manipulated from no interaction to synergy against Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli. After incubating with synergistic polysulfoniums/rifampicin combinations at a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), the time needed to achieve a 6-log reduction of E. coli can be accelerated 8 times compared to the antibiotic treatment. At 1/2 MIC, polysulfoniums/rifampicin combinations can provide a 90% reduction in biofilm mass and 8-log orders of embedded bacteria killing in 3-day-mature E. coli biofilms. This work demonstrates that alkylation chemistry can serve as a reliable means to create antibiotic adjuvants in combating infections caused by Gram-negative pathogens and biofilms.

In this study, rice starch was ultrasound-assisted (power = 0 W, 200 W, and 450 W) succinylated with C8–C14 anhydrides under controlled conditions, with the major aim of balancing side-chain lengths and degree of substitution (DS) for superior amphiphilicity and emulsification. A bell-shaped relationship between chain lengths and functionality was observed, peaking at decenyl succinic anhydride (DSA, C10)-modified starch, particularly DSA-450 W achieved optimal amphiphilicity (θ = 86.3°), emulsification performance (EAI = 34.3 m 2 /g, ζ-potential = −80.4 mV, CI > 61 % over 21 days), and a lower DS than OSA. Conventional octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA, C8) modification exhibited the highest swelling power (18.9 g/g) and peak viscosity (1348.5 BU). High-power ultrasound most enhanced tetradecenyl succinic anhydride (TDSA, C14) modification, yet the suboptimal contact angle and emulsification properties of TDSA-starch challenge conventional wisdom and show that longer hydrophobic side chains do not necessarily yield better performance. In summary, DSA-modified starch balances moderate hydrophobic chain lengths with reactivity and is expected to be an ideal alternative to OSA, offering a promising strategy for stabilizing Pickering emulsions with enhanced stability and cost-effectiveness in food and non-food applications.

Polymeric high internal phase emulsions decorated with covalent organic frameworks (polyHIPEs-COFs) were synthesized and used as the sorbent for cyantraniliprole and chlorantraniliprole. Pickering high internal phase emulsions stabilized by covalent organic frameworks solid particles and liquid surfactants (Span80 and polyvinylpyrrolidone) endow the composites with open-cell structures and superwettability. The amphiphilicity and open-cell structures enable rapid adsorption and desorption for cyantraniliprole and chlorantraniliprole, and the solid-phase extraction process can be completed in 5 min. The adsorption efficiencies of polyHIPEs-COFs for cyantraniliprole and chlorantraniliprole are above 85.19%, but lower than 10% for fenvalerate, anti-aphid, and chlorpyrifos, demonstrating the good adsorption selectivity for cyantraniliprole and chlorantraniliprole. The adsorption efficiencies of cyantraniliprole and chlorantraniliprole using a same polyHIPEs-COFs and five different batches of polyHIPEs-COFs range from 94.25 to 100.00%, revealing the good reproducibility of the sorbent. In addition, the polyHIPEs-COF-based solid-phase extraction combined with high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detector (HPLC–UV) was developed for determination of bisamide insecticides in vegetable (eggplants, tomatoes, and peppers) samples. Results showed that the method was feasible to determine the cyantraniliprole and chlorantraniliprole in real vegetable samples with a linear range of 0.012–1.2 μg/kg and limits of detection of 0.0075–0.0090 μg/kg. The recoveries of cyantraniliprole and chlorantraniliprole spiked in vegetable samples ranged from 85.00 to 100.00% with relative standard deviations less than 3.52%. The study indicates the feasibility of amphiphilic polyHIPEs-COFs in extraction and enrichment of bisamide insecticides from vegetable samples for HPLC–UV analysis. Graphical

Rapid formation of natural gas clathrate hydrates has been a significant hazard in off-shore natural gas drilling and gas transport. During operation, polymer inhibitors can serve as low-dosage kinetic inhibitors to prevent the formation of gas hydrates. A comprehensive consideration of the multiple factors involved in the actions of kinetic hydrate inhibitors (KHIs) can elucidate the inhibiting behavior of polymers. Here, amphiphilic poly(N-isopropylmethacrylamide) (PNIPMAm) (or poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)) are found to achieve weak to strong inhibition by the variable superimposed effect of the polymer’s amide group and hydrophobic effect of the polymer’s alkyl groups on the aqueous phase. The interfacial and bulk water mobility and hydrogen bonding energy in the polymer solutions are compared by low-temperature nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxometry. The mobility of the water is found to be sensitive to the hydrophobic α-methyl side group in PNIPMAm and its molecular weight when a guest molecule tetrahydrofuran is present. The water hydrogen bonding energies measured from NMR are also associated with the nonfreezable bound water amount revealed by differential scanning calorimetry. The α-methyl side group leads to a significant reduction of the water mobility, an increase in the hydrogen bonding energies of the interfacial water, and a decrease of the hydrate growth rate constants by 2 to 3 orders of magnitude. The retarded reaction kinetics of heterogeneous hydrate growth can be related to the hydrophobic effect of the polymer’s α-methyl side group and bound water properties (mobility and amount) in the interface.

A water-soluble terpyridine-based cationic fluorescent probe ( SP - TPy ) was synthesized, which emerged with pH-dependent amphiphilicity, resulting in self-assembly and disassembly in aqueous media with the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) property. In neutral water (pH 7.4), a moderate sensing response to Hg 2+ ions was given by the self-assembly of SP - TPy . However, in acidic aqueous media, the monomer of SP - TPy not only appeared to be highly selective and sensitive for Hg 2+ ions, but also displayed highly efficient removal of Hg 2+ ions from solution by rapid precipitation, which was attributed to the coordination-triggered reassembly of SP - TPy . The removal efficiency of SP-TPy f or Hg 2+ was found to be over 99%. Further study indicated that the precipitates were composed of various polyhedral porous frameworks, a property that was further used to adsorb H 2 S gas to form HgS complexes with higher uptake capacities. In addition, SP - TPy can be efficiently regenerated and recycled using a simple treatment with acidic water after adsorption of the H 2 S gas.

The rapid growth of natural gas clathrate hydrate has been a significant safety hazard in off-shore natural gas drilling and gas transport. Alleviation of hydrate formation can be achieved by applying low-dosage hydrate inhibitors of polymers during operation. In order to combine the advantages of high adsorption potential and environmental friendliness, we study the kinetics of hydrate inhibition of amphiphilic highly branched poly(l-lysine) (PLL) by NMR relaxometry. The introduction of n-butyl and cyclohexyl groups in PLLs was found to be significantly effective in prolonging the induction times of sII clathrate hydrates. Key physical–chemical factors involved in the mechanism previously proposed by molecular dynamics simulations can be clarified by NMR relaxometry. Induction times for the formation of hydrate are associated with the interfacial water amount but are not related to the hydrogen bonding strength or dynamics of the free water component. The amphiphilic PLLs in the interface interact with the hydrate surfaces through their hydration shell. Analysis of the molecular motion and freezing kinetics of water in the fluid before and during hydrate formation reveals that the polymers can reduce the rates of hydrate growth from the free water by a factor of 5 to 10. A further significant decrease in the growth rates from small hydrate particles by a factor of 10 to 2600 was observed in the presence of the amphiphilic PLLs with n-butyl and cyclohexyl groups. The distinct crystal growth kinetics in the heterogeneous interface are influenced by the terminal alkyl groups of the polymers, with changing growth geometry or crystal shapes and consistent with the interfacial Gibbs–Thomson effect. A high Avrami index value of the isothermal crystal growth and nonfreezable water amount favors a long induction time. The PLL inhibitors adsorb to the hydrate surface and act via an interfacial mechanism.
