Due to the non-degradable of heavy metal, adsorption has been extensively applied to abatement it. Most studies were focused on uptake metal ions via electrostatic attraction and ion exchange, and load molecule H 3 AsO 4 from strongly acidic wastewater was still challenging. To solve the problem, bimetallic La–Zr MOFs was facilely fabricated in this work, and the fcu topology structure of La-Zr MOFs was remained well under the investigate crystallization time and crystallization temperature. However, the crystallinity of the obtained La-Zr MOFs was influenced by the synthesized factors. The obtained La–Zr MOFs was employed as adsorbent to removal Cr(VI) and As(V), and the performance was evaluated by the batch experiment. The result indicated that the adsorption performance of Cr(VI) and As(V) was positively correlated with the crystallinity , and the optimal sample was 1LaUN 12 . From the XPS characterization, it was found that H 3 AsO 4 was successfully uptake over 1LaUN 12 surface, and the maximum monolayer adsorption capacity was 83.40 mgH 3 AsO 4 /g via ligand exchange and coordination reactions with La−OH and Zr−OH. In addition, the sample 1LaUN 12 also exhibited the excellent Cr(VI) load performance, and the maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) was 222.5 mg/g. Above 40% Cr(VI) was reduced to Cr(III) by amino groups, and immobilized over the surface of 1LaUN 12 . Eventually, 1LaUN 12 displayed a good structural stability in the acidic medium, which was in favor of removing Cr(VI) and As(V) efficiently from strongly acidic solutions.

Arsenic pollution in natural water is a worldwide problem. In this work, a resin-based hydrated iron oxide (D303-HFO) adsorbent was designed to remove arsenate (As(V)) and arsenite (As(III)) in the groundwater. The structure and morphology of the D303-HFO adsorbent were characterized by FTIR, XRD , SEM and TEM tests. The specific surface area, pore volume and pore size increased with the incorporation of HFO nanoparticles in the resin. In addition, the effects of pH and coexisting ions on the arsenic removal efficiency were investigated. Results indicated that the D303-HFO had efficient removal performance for arsenic in the pH range of 3–9 and showed high selectivity for As(V) and As(III) under the influence of competitive ions. The adsorption kinetics study confirmed that the adsorption process was dominated by chemisorption , and the adsorption isotherms of As(V) and As(III) by D303-HFO fitted the Langmuir model. Thermodynamic parameters indicated that the adsorption reaction was spontaneous and exothermic. Moreover, the regeneration and stability experiment indicated that the D303-HFO adsorbent was super reusable after five consecutive cycles and could be put into service stably and permanently. The fixed-bed column test showed that the water sample containing As(V) and As(III) was treated with a volume of 900BV and 1100BV, respectively. After the treatment, the effluent concentration reached the drinking water standard stipulated by WHO.

Extracting cellulose from agricultural residues and converting it into environmentally friendly adsorbents to solve the heavy metal contamination problem of groundwater and farmland is an effective strategy to achieve high-value utilization of agricultural residues. Herein, we propose a streamlined crosslinking strategy to fabricate a cellulose-based amphoteric hyperbranched adsorbent (MAHPA) in a controlled manner. The strategy involves synthesizing the amphoteric hyperbranched functional reagent first and then crosslinking it with microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). This approach simplifies the complexity of the multi-component cross-linking system, resulting in a conversion rate of reaction reagents exceeding 99 %. MAHPA, with a three-dimensional hyperbranched structure (degree of branching: 0.77), exhibits a high swelling rate (247.62 %) and high densities of carboxyl (7.05 mmol·g −1 ) and amino (8.27 mmol·g −1 ) groups. Moreover, the cellulose-hyperbranched double-network structure of MAHPA greatly enhances the intramolecular diffusion kinetics of heavy metal ions on MAHPA, enabling it to complete the removal of low concentrations of Cr(VI), As(V), Pb(II), and Cd(II) within 20 min. Interestingly, MAHPA demonstrates excellent synchronous capture performance for Cr(VI), As(V), Pb(II), and Cd(II) in groundwater at a velocity of 1.60 × 10 −2 m·s −1 . Meanwhile, applying MAHPA can realize the safe utilization of Cd-As contaminated soil. This work offers a general strategy for the structural design of cellulose-based hyperbranched adsorbent holding great promise as heavy metal contaminated groundwater and soil remediation field.

Arsenic contamination of water is a global concern due to its heavy threat to human health. In this study, the submerged macrophyte Vallisneria natans (Lour.) Hara was used to remove environmentally relevant concentrations of arsenic in the binary As(III)/As(V) system. The concentrations of total arsenic (tAs) and As(III) in water dropped rapidly within 3 days, while As(V) first increased slightly within 3 days and then gradually decreased. About 1.2% dimethylarsinate (DMA) was detected at the 14th day of treatment. These findings indicated that As(III) could be oxidized to As(V) and methylated to DMA in water with V. natans . In relation to V. natans , both tAs and As(V) were much higher in roots compared to leaves. Arsenate was the predominant species (≥ 95.65 ± 0.10%) in roots, and As(III) was only found at the 14th day (3.45–6.96 mg kg –1 ). In leaves, As(III) significantly increased ( P < 0.05) as the treatment duration increased. The proportions of As(V) (27.99–40.03%) were lower than those of As(III) and arsenobetaine (AsB) was detected (0.52–1.87 mg kg –1 ) after 7 d. The results of arsenic speciation demonstrated that the transformation of arsenic species in V. natans included As(V) reduction and As(III) methylation to AsB. There were a decrease in chlorophyll content, and an increase in MDA level and antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT , and POD) activities. The MDA level was much higher in leaves than roots, whereas the activities of SOD, CAT, and POD were the opposite, suggesting their possible role in arsenic resistance and detoxification. Our results indicate the potential of V. natans in phytoremediation of arsenic-contaminated water.

This paper explored the method of combining atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) technology and hyperbranched polymer principle to prepare the high capacity chelating resin. First, surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) method was used to graft glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) on chloromethylated cross-linked styrene-divinylbenzene resin, and then the novel polyamine chelating resin with a kind of hyperbranched structure was prepared through the amination reaction between amino group of (2-aminoethyl) triamine and epoxy group in GMA. This resin had a selective effect on As(V) and Cr(VI) at a relatively low pH and can be used for the disposal of waste water containing As(V) and Cr(VI). It had a relatively strong adsorption effect on Cu(II), Pb(II), Cd(II) and Cr(III) and can be used for the disposal of heavy metal ion waste water. The finding was that, the adsorption capacity of resin on the studied heavy metal ions was higher than that of the chelating resin synthesized by traditional technology and also higher than that of the resin modified by ATRP technology and bifunctional chelator, indicating that the combination of ATRP and hyperbranched polymer concept is an effective method to prepare chelating resin with high capacity.

This study examined the role of intermittent illumination/dark conditions coupled with MnO 2 -ammendments to regulate the mobility of As and Fe in flooded arsenic-enriched soils. Addition of MnO 2 particles with intermittent illumination led to a pronounced increase in the reductive-dissolution of Fe(III) and As(V) from flooded soils compared to a corresponding dark treatments. A higher MnO 2 dosage (0.10 vs 0.02 g) demonstrated a greater effect. Over a 49-day incubation, maximum Fe concentrations mobilized from the flooded soils amended with 0.10 and 0.02 g MnO 2 particles were 2.39 and 1.85-fold higher than for non-amended soils under dark conditions. The corresponding maximum amounts of mobilized As were at least 92 % and 65 % higher than for non-amended soils under dark conditions, respectively. Scavenging of excited holes by soil humic/fulvic compounds increased mineral photoelectron production and boosted Fe(III)/As(V) reduction in MnO 2 -amended, illuminated soils. Additionally, MnO 2 amendments shifted soil microbial community structure by enriching metal-reducing bacteria (e.g., Anaeromyxobacter , Bacillus and Geobacter ) and increasing c -type cytochrome production. This microbial diversity response to MnO 2 amendment facilitated direct contact extracellular electron transfer processes, which further enhanced Fe/As reduction. Subsequently, the mobility of released Fe(II) and As(III) was partially attenuated by adsorption, oxidation, complexation and/or coprecipitation on active sites generated on MnO 2 surfaces during MnO 2 dissolution. These results illustrated the impact of a semiconducting MnO 2 mineral in regulating the biogeochemical cycles of As/Fe in soil and demonstrated the potential for MnO 2 -based bioremediation strategies for arsenic-polluted soils.

Addressing the ever-growing arsenite pollution in groundwater has become an essential and urgent issue for ensuring the safety of human beings and the environment. It is highly attractive to preoxidize As(III) to relatively low toxic As(V) for further efficient arsenic removal by adsorption, ion exchange, or coagulation. In this study, a novel heterostructure Cu2O@TiO2 nanotube array coated titanium anode (CTNTA) was fabricated by combination of electrochemical anodization and electrodeposition and used for the highly efficient photoelectrocatalytic oxidation conversion of As(III) to As(V) in aqueous solution. The morphology, composition, and photoelectric performances of the CTNTA anode were systematically characterized. The effect of the loading amount of Cu2O nanoparticles on the photoelectrocatalytic oxidation kinetics of As(III) was investigated, and the comparison study among photocatalytic, electrocatalytic, and photoelectrocatalytic oxidations of As(III) was also explored to demonstrate the synergistic effect of As(III) oxidation conversion performance. The heterostructure CTNTAs-1.00 delivered a substantially enhanced photoelectrocatalytic oxidation ratio of As(III) at 95% within 30 min at a current density of 10 mA·cm–2 under visible-light irradiation. The electrochemical deposition amount of Cu2O nanoparticles on TiO2 nanotube arrays (TNTAs) was found to be positively correlated with the achievement of boosted As(III) oxidation efficiency. The high photoelectrocatalytic oxidation performance of the CTNTA was ascribed to the favored separation efficiency of photoinduced carriers and electron–hole pairs under both visible light irradiation and electric potential conditions. The photoelectrocatalytic oxidation reaction mechanism was proven to be ascribed to the active species of holes (h+), superoxide radicals (•O2–), and hydroxyl radicals (•OH). These results highlight the high conversion rate of As(III) by the photoelectrocatalytic oxidation reaction on such a nanostructured anode, which offers a promising methodology for further in-depth oxidation of As(III) in aqueous solution.

Recycling rare earth elements (REEs) from secondary sources such as mine wastewater has emerged as a sustainable economic strategy. In this study, microbial synthesized iron nanoparticles after the recovery of rare earth elements (FeNPs/REEs) have been used as an environmentally friendly material to remove arsenic from mine groundwater. The removal efficiencies of As(III) and As(V) were 94.5% and 96.0%, respectively, compared to that of As(III) (44.5%) and As(V) (66.5%) using only FeNPs. Indicated here is that the efficiency of FeNPs/REEs in removing arsenic was better than those of FeNPs. IC-AFS and XPS analysis showed that As(III) was partially oxidized to As(V) during the adsorption process via electron transfer. Electrochemical and BET indicated that FeNPs/REEs not only helped to expose more active sites but also the catalytic activity was enhanced. Meanwhile SEM-Mapping and FTIR demonstrated that arsenic was adsorbed onto the surface of FeNPs/REEs through complexation and ion exchange. Furthermore, Zeta potential analysis revealed electrostatic interactions between arsenic and FeNPs/REEs at pH = 6.0. Thus, the key physicochemical properties for the removal of As(III) and As(V) by FeNPs/REEs were statistically analyzed via Pearson correlation analysis, in order to understand the removal mechanism of arsenic involving surface complexation, oxidation, electrostatic and ion exchange. Finally, efficiency was consistently high in removing arsenic from mine groundwater using FeNPs/REEs with As (73.0%), Pb (76.0%), and Fe (36.0%). This study generates a new insight into FeNPs/REEs used in groundwater remediation.

Arsenic–rich schwertmannite may cause arsenic (As) release during phase transition. In this study, microbial sulfidogenesis on As(V)–loaded schwertmannite (As-Sch) and associated As mobility at different SO 4 2− concentrations were investigated under anaerobic conditions by Desulfosporosinus meridiei ( D. meridiei ). For biotic treatments, the more SO 4 2− was added, the more Fe 3+ was reduced to Fe 2+ , and the more As(V) was released during the reductive dissolution of As-Sch. The reduction of As(V) to As(III) by D. meridiei resulted in a higher concentration, toxicity, solubility and mobility of As than the corresponding abiotic treatments. However, compared with the abiotic treatments, a variety of new minerals (such as mackinawite , vivianite , sulfur, As 2 S 3 , and parasymplesite) were generated in the biotic treatments, and the As concentration in aqueous solution was less than 1 μM at the end of the incubation period regardless of the presence of SO 4 2− . The results of continuous extraction of different species of As from secondary minerals showed that the effect of microorganisms decreased As content of amorphous iron oxide-bound phase, while increasing that bound on the surface of iron oxide surface-bound phase, thus increasing As fluidity. Our findings indicated that under anaerobic conditions, D. meridiei sulfidogenesis can trigger significant As mobilization in the early stage and remove As from the aqueous solutions when new minerals are formed at a later stage.

The application of green synthesized iron nanoparticles ( n Fe) for the removal of arsenic (As) from contaminated sites has often been proposed as one of the most promising remediation methods. In this work, TEM analysis showed that As(V) was uniformly adsorbed on the surfaces of n Fe, while FTIR analysis confirmed that adsorption was mainly via an Fe O As bond, and XPS analysis indicated that only As(V) was adsorbed. Hence, the removal mechanism proposed for As(V) is based on initially n Fe reacting with As(V) to form a monodentate chelating ligand and subsequently a bidentate binuclear complex. The initially high surface area (51.14 m 2 g −1 ) of n Fe was decreased by half (26.03 m 2 g −1 ) after As(V) adsorption, where the materials high As(V) adsorption capacity(21.59 mg g -1 ) was attributed to unique properties derived from the green synthesis. Adsorption isotherm modeling indicated that As(V) adsorption by n Fe best fit the Langmuir equation (R L 2 = 0.9903), and thus suggested chemisorption was occurring. The adsorption also fitted the pseudo second-order kinetic rate equation well, which confirmed that adsorption was via chemisorption. Overall, the green synthesis of n Fe exhibited great application potential for As(V) removal due to high As(V) adsorption capacity and simplicity of synthesis.

A novel chitosan (CS)-modified diatomite (Dt) was prepared by a simple mixture in the mass ratio to remove As(V) from aqueous solution in this research. The CS-modified Dt adsorbent was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis. The parameters to influence the adsorption of As(V) ion were studied under such conditions as kinetics, adsorption isotherm, and pH effect. The results revealed that adsorption of As(V) was initially rapid and the equilibrium time was reached after 40 min. The optimal value of the pH was 5.0 for better adsorption. The equilibrium data were well fitted to the Langmuir isotherm compared to the Freundlich isotherm, and exhibited the highest capacity and removal efficiency of 94.3% under an initial As(V) concentration of 5 mg/L. The kinetic data were well described by the pseudo-second-order model. In addition, 0.1 M NaOH has the best desorption efficiency of As(V) adsorbed on CS-modified Dt, and the removal efficiency of As(V) was still higher than 90% when after six adsorption-desorption cycles. These results showed that the CS-modified Dt could be considered as a potential adsorbent for the removal of As(V) in aqueous solution.

To address the prevailing issue of arsenic contamination in water bodies, a novel composite microsphere (Fe-CB) was developed for the effective removal of As(V) ions from aqueous solutions. This microsphere was prepared using a sol–gel-titration-freeze-drying method, with chitosan and ferric chloride as raw materials, polyethyleneimine as a modifier and glutaraldehyde as a cross-linking agent. The effects of pH, adsorbent dosage, initial heavy metal concentration, and contact time on the performance of the adsorbent were investigated by a series of adsorption experiments. It was showed that pH played a significant role in determining the adsorption efficiency, while temperature had a relatively minor influence. The adsorption isothermal of As(V) on Fe-CB was best described by Langmuir isotherm model, whereas the dynamic adsorption process fitted the pseudo-second-order or secondary kinetic model well. Notably, the theoretical maximum adsorption capacity was 80.97 mg/g. Furthermore, regeneration experiments demonstrated that Fe-CB maintained a regeneration rate of over 85% even after five cycles, highlighting its excellent recyclability. This study underscores the potential of Fe-CB as an efficient and reusable adsorbent for the removal of As(V) ions from contaminated waters.
