Despite that radiotherapy (RT) is a prevalent treatment of cancer, enhancing tumor dose deposit and reversing resistance are two major challenges in its clinical application. Here, we report Au–ZnO (AZ) nano matches that drastically increase reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and alleviate hypoxia in RT on triple-negative breast cancer. Upon X-ray irradiation, Au increases X-ray attenuation and excites the adjacent ZnO by electron scattering, electron transfer, and energy transfer. Meanwhile, Au plays the role of a reservoir of electrons that promotes the charge separation in ZnO, thereby significantly improving the ROS production efficiency and causing the ROS burst. The ROS generation efficiency of AZ is determined to be 2.03 times that of Au. In contrast, a physical mixture of Au and ZnO only slightly increased the ROS generation compared to Au (1.18 times). Moreover, AZ catalyzes H2O2 decomposition to produce oxygen at excited states, thus modulating tumor hypoxia. Clonogenic assay showed that AZ had efficient radiosensitization with radiation enhancement factors of 4.01 and 3.50 in 4T1 breast cancer cells under normoxia and hypoxia, respectively. AZ-enhanced RT can successfully eliminate or shrink tumors (two of the six were completely removed) upon 4 Gy of X-ray irradiation on 4T1 tumor-bearing mice. At the end point, the average tumor size in AZ with the RT-treated group was only 1.8% of that of PBS with RT, significantly outperforming the other control groups including a physical mixture of Au and ZnO nanoparticles at the same concentrations..

A new, photoelectrochemical immunosensor was proposed on the basis of the La-CdS/3D ZnIn 2 S 4 /Au@ZnO sensitization structure for detection of aminoterminal pro-brain natriuretic peptides (NT-proBNP). The Au@ZnO-modified electrode was first assembled with 3D ZnIn 2 S 4 , and then further deposited with lanthanum doped cadmium sulfide (La-CdS) via successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction strategy. The Au@ZnO has excellent photoelectric activity and electrical conductivity . The ZnIn 2 S 4 with 3D architectures not only exhibit high photocurrent intensity under visible-light irradiation but also have large surface for the La-CdS deposition. Meanwhile, the La-CdS doped structure could depress the charge recombination, which effectively promotes separation of the generated electron-hole (e - /h + ) pairs and consequently enhances the photocurrent conversion efficiency. The polydopamine (PDA) was used not only as a cross-linker reagent for the immobilization of the anti-NT-proBNP but also as an electron donor for promoting the photo-generated e - /h + separation of the semiconductors. Under optimal conditions, the well-designed photoelectrochemical immunoassay exhibited a low detection limit of 0.32 pg mL −1 and a wide linear range from 0.8 pg mL −1 to 45 ng mL −1 for target NT-proBNP detection. Meanwhile, it also presented good reproducibility, specificity, and stability and might open a new promising strategy for the detection of other important tumor markers.

Integrating the advantages of multiple therapies into one therapeutic platform is highly desired for augmented treatment effects. Herein, by modifying MLS and PEG on ZnO-nanorods/AuNPs nanoassemblies and coating with C6 cell membrane (MP-Au/ [email protected] ), we construct a novel ultrasound-activatable Au/ZnO-based tumor therapeutic platform (Trojan nanogenerators) and exploit it for effective tumor therapy. The developed MP-Au/ [email protected] nanogenerators worked well in multiple ways to achieve targeted electrostimulation and enhanced catalytic therapy of tumor, under ultrasound excitation. Firstly, the ZnO-nanogenerators will generate a piezoelectric potential difference of about 140 mV by ultrasonic excitation when targeted (by MLS moiety) to the mitochondria, disrupting the mitochondrial membrane potential for electrostimulation. Secondly, the nanogenerators enhances greatly multiple enzyme-like activities of Au nano-components for enhanced tumor catalytic therapy. Among them, the affinity and maximum reaction rate of peroxidase-like are increased by 34.99% and 53.36% respectively through kinetic analysis . Simulations and calculations revealed the roles of piezoelectric polarization electric field and displacement current in enhancing catalytic activity . The superior tumor suppressive effect of the MP-Au/ [email protected] was confirmed by in-vitro cell study and in-vivo C6 tumor-bearing mouse models. The developed ultrasound-activated nanogenerators will provide a unique electrostimulation tumor therapy strategy and opens a new way for improving the therapeutic efficacy of nanozymes.

The semiconductor–metal heteronanocrystals (HNCs) that possess a perfect epitaxial interface can accommodate novel and interesting physical phenomena owing to the strong interaction and coupling between the semiconductor excitons and metal plasmons at the interface. Here, we fabricate the pyramidal ZnO–Au HNCs and study their unique photophysical properties. Several Au nanospheres are perfectly epitaxially bound with a single ZnO NC owing to the small lattice mismatch between them and there are also ZnO–Au–ZnO sandwiched HNCs. There is a strong coupling between the green defect-associated recombination in the ZnO NC and the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of the Au nanosphere at the interface of the HNC. This leads to resonant defect recombination–LSPR energy transfer and resultant nearly complete quenching of the green defect luminescence of the ZnO NCs in the HNCs, leaving only the UV exciton luminescence. The lifetimes of both the green and UV emission bands decrease significantly in the ZnO–Au HNCs relative to that of the pure ZnO NCs owing to the combined effect of resonance energy transfer and surface plasmon enhanced radiative transition. The exponent of the luminescence intensity–excitation intensity power function for the green emission band is remarkably smaller than unity, and this suggests that the involved defects have an intermediate concentration.

A novel hierarchical ZnO rose-like architecture assembled by porous nanosheets was synthesized through a facile hydrothermal method combined with calcination process and used to fabricate gas sensors. The gas sensing measurements showed that the samples exhibited superior individual BTX (benzene, toluene and xylene) sensing properties. By designing more tiny pores on hierarchical rose petal-like nanosheet surface, the specific surface area of the samples was further extended. Besides, highly dispersed Au nanoparticles were grown on the ZnO rose-like architectures to enhance the gas sensing performance via a precipitation manner. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses indicated the average grain size of these Au nanoparticles was about 3 nm. The gas sensing results showed that the responses of the Au-ZnO sensor to 20 ppm individual benzene, toluene and xylene were 16.25 46.43 and 76.47, which were 4.33, 4.47 and 6.51 times higher than those of the pure specimens. Besides, the optimal working temperature was also decreased from 302 °C to 206 °C. The Au-ZnO sensor also exhibited short response/recovery times, low-concentration detection capability and good stability. The schottky contact between Au and ZnO, catalytic activity of Au nanoparticles and the specific ZnO porous rose-like architectures could be three pivotal factors for the superior BTX sensing properties.

Using sunlight as renewable resource has stimulated the development of sustainable photocatalysts that can collect visible light. Semiconductor nanowire-based photocatalysts have attracted increasing interest due to their unique optical, electronic, and structural advantages. Here, noble metal-semiconductor hybrid Au/ZnO nanowires have been fabricated by chemical vapor deposition method. The hybrid photocatalysts were well characterized by SEM, TEM, EDS, XRD, XPS, UV–visible spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Compared with ZnO nanowires, Au/ZnO heterostructures exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance due to the synergistic combination of Au and ZnO. Optical properties were modeled to support our interpretation of photocatalytic mechanisms. Our work provides a feasible strategy to prepare plasmonic photocatalysts and will also deepen the understanding of the plasmon enhanced photocatalytic performance in hybrid photocatalysts.

The conversion of carbon monoxide (CO) into high-value organic molecules has long been pursued by both industry and academia. One of the central challenges is to realize carbon–carbon coupling with high selectivity for CO insertion. We report here a highly selective Au/ZnO composite catalyst for one-step oxidative coupling of CO with secondary amines, producing oxamides. The reaction is >99% selective under ambient conditions, which exhibits a subtle change of catalyst activity over ∼120 h in a fixed-bed reactor. A combination of microscopic and spectroscopic studies (including X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, CO-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy) and machine learning reveal that the active site is the Au–ZnO interface with a Au nanocluster attached to the ZnO support via nonstoichiometric ZnOx (x > 1) linkages. The reaction mechanism and key reaction intermediates were confirmed by density functional theory calculations and in situ diffused reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy signals. Our results open an avenue in heterogeneous catalysis to achieve the ambient-condition CO transformation by exploiting the interfacial synergistic effects.

Au–ZnO heterogeneous nanoparticles (NPs) were successfully synthesized, and the intrinsic correlation between their spectral evolution and interfacial growth mechanism was systematically elucidated. With increasing Au content, the SPR absorption peak of Au exhibits a pronounced red shift, while the defect-related emission of ZnO is suppressed and the band-edge emission becomes broadened. These spectral variations are closely coupled with the interfacial growth process. Interfacial electron transfer and the formation of a Schottky barrier induce charge redistribution within ZnO and reduce oxygen vacancies, enabling ZnO to preferentially nucleate on the Au surface and subsequently evolve into a pyramidal structure. The resulting morphological transformation further enhances electron depletion and plasmonic coupling, lowering the effective plasmonic energy of Au and deepening the SPR red shift. Quantitative analysis based on Mie theory shows that approximately 12% of the free electrons in Au participate in interfacial transfer, confirming the cooperative role of strong electronic coupling in governing both growth dynamics and optical responses. This study provides deeper insight into the photophysical mechanisms of Au–ZnO heteronanocrystals and offers guidance for designing noble metal–semiconductor composites with tunable optoelectronic properties.

The semiconductor metal oxide, ZnO, is limited to application in photocatalysis because of large bandgap. Metallic nanostructures are utilized to enhance visible-light absorption and improve photocatalytic activity via surface plasmon resonance (SPR). In this work, through a facile thermal decomposition method, the Au nanoparticles (NPs) were successfully loaded on oriented hierarchical ZnO flower-rod (ZFRs) heterostructures, which have a higher areal proportion of exposed active (001) crystal faces. The results indicate that ZFRs are wurtzite phase grown along the [001] direction and the Au NPs spread on the surface of ZFRs in metallic form. It reveals that there is an electronic interaction between Au NPs and ZFRs, and more oxygen molecules are adsorbed on the surface of Au-ZnO flower-rod heterostructures (AZFRs). The AZFRs show a strong absorbance in visible region due to the SPR and enhance the separation of electron–hole pair, resulting in an improvement of photocatalytic activity under visible-light irradiation. During 80 min, the degradation efficiency of rhodamine B for AZFRs-20 is about 3.7 times as the pure ZFRs. Moreover, the AZFRs exhibit predominant photoelectrochemical properties, and the photocurrent can reach 1.2 × 10 −4 A. Finally, the as-prepared photocatalytic device composed of AZFRs based on indium doped tin oxide glass is convenient to recycle without centrifugation.

Currently, the large-scale and controllable fabrication of nanostructures on substrates remains a great challenge for further practical applications. In this work, a novel 3D aloe-like Au–ZnO nanocomposite was designed for in situ synthesis on an ITO substrate, achieving real-time detection of trace catechol (CC) in water. A seed-assisted hydrothermal approach was proposed to control the crystal distribution and growth direction to build a ZnO aloe-like architecture. To eliminate the natural weak conductivity of ZnO, Au nanoparticles were further deposited on all ZnO arrays to construct Au–ZnO micro/nanostructures. The synergetic effects derived from the aloe-like ZnO with a large specific area and Au nanoparticles with high conductivity resulted in both high electrocatalysis and fast electron transfer in enzymatic reactions . After laccase immobilization , the as-prepared biosensor exhibited specific recognition of catechol among other dihydroxybenzenes and phenol with an ultrahigh sensitivity of 131 μA mM −1 , as well as an extremely wide linear range from 75 nM to 1100 μM and an ultralow detection limit of 25 nM. In addition, in the detection of real lake samples, this biosensor showed satisfactory anti-interference ability and provided reliable assay results.

Gas sensors play a vital role in human health monitoring, particularly for detecting disease-related biomarkers in exhaled breath. However, conventional metal-oxide semiconductor gas sensors face limitations in wearable respiratory monitoring applications due to their inflexibility and high heat loss. Here, we fabricated an Au-ZnO fibre-based gas sensor for the detection of ammonia (NH3), an indicator of kidney dysfunction. The device is constructed from a composite flexible fibre comprising a liquid-metal core and a silica cladding, onto which an Au-ZnO gas-sensing layer is synthesised in situ. Liquid metal directly conducts thermal energy to the insulating cladding through Joule heating, providing thermal energy to the gas-sensing layer. This design enables low heat loss and low-current operation while generating sufficient thermal energy to enhance the gas-sensing response. The resulting Au-ZnO fibre sensor exhibits a stable high response to NH3 (response of 2.2 to 2 ppm NH3) even under bending (bending radius of 15 mm). The response time and recovery time are 153 s and 156 s at a working temperature of 280 oC. This demonstrates that the Au-ZnO fibre sensor has good flexibility and suitability for wearable respiratory monitoring. To showcase its practical utility, a real-time monitoring sensor system was developed by designing a signal detection circuit, and the concentration of NH3 was monitored in real time through different coloured light-emitting diodes. This work presents a practical, home-based approach for respiratory monitoring of NH3 and offers a simple, effective solution to distinguish between healthy individuals and patients with different stages of kidney disease.

Strong metal-support interactions (SMSI) are pivotal for constructing interfacial active sites, yet its precise regulation remains a formidable challenge. Here, we report a facile strategy to modulate the atmosphere-dependent SMSI in Au/ZnO catalysts by strictly regulating the oxygen partial pressure during thermal treatment. We reveal that the encapsulation degree of Au particles exhibits a volcano-shaped dependence on oxygen partial pressure, which drives electron transfer from Au to the support to create abundant interfacial oxygen vacancies (Au–O V –Zn). For the oxidative esterification of methacrolein, mechanistic investigations reveal that these interfacial defects constitute frustrated Lewis acid–base pairs to promote the formation of hemiacetal intermediates, and simultaneously serve as active sites for oxygen activation. The activated lattice oxygen migrates to the Au surface and generate active Au–O species that effectively overcome the kinetic barrier of the rate-determining β-H elimination. Driven by this interfacial synergy, the catalyst exhibiting the most pronounced SMSI achieves state-of-the-art performance with an MMA yield of 91.8%. These findings provide a new strategy for the design of high-performance catalysts via interfacial defect engineering.
