The recovery of precious metals is a project with both economic and environmental significance. In this paper, how to use bacterial mineralization to selectively recover gold from multi-ionic aqueous systems is presented. TheBacillus licheniformisFZUL-63, isolated from a landscape lake in Fuzhou University, was shown to selectively mineralize and precipitate gold from coexisting ions in aqueous solution. The removal of Au(III) almost happened in the first hour. Scanning electron microscope with X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS-mapping) results and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) data show that the amino, carboxyl, and phosphate groups on the surface of the bacteria are related to the adsorption of gold ions. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results implied that Au(III) ions were reduced to those that were monovalent, and the Au(I) was then adsorbed on the bacterial surface at the beginning stage (in the first hour). X-ray diffraction (XRD) results showed that the gold biomineralization began about 10 h after the interaction between Au(III) ions and bacteria. Au(III) mineralization has rarely been influenced by other co-existing metal ions. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) analysis shows that the gold nanoparticles have a polyhedral structure with a particle size of ~20 nm. TheBacillus licheniformisFZUL-63 could selectively mineralize and recover 478 mg/g (dry biomass) gold from aqua regia-based metal wastewater through four cycles. This could be of great potential in practical applications. Keywords:selective biomineralization;recovery of Au(III);AuNP;Bacillus licheniformisFZUL-63;aqua regia-based metal wastewater

In order to improve drug efficacy, and reduce drug toxicity and side effects, a novel drug controlled release system was developed based on mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) acting as pore caps and short single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) oligomers as the linker. The synthesised composites were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), zeta potential measurement, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and UV-vis spectroscopy. The anticancer drug doxorubicin (Dox) was applied as a model drug to investigate the 808 nm near infrared (NIR) laser-controlled drug release behavior at different pH by fluorescence measurements. The investigation results demonstrate that this nanocarrier could achieve drug controlled release by external near-infrared (NIR) laser stimulation, which is expected to be applied in cancer therapy.

An innovative electrochemical biosensor is proposed for the sensitive detection of ofloxacin (OFL) by integrating exonuclease I (Exo I)–assisted recognition-transduction strategy into the MXene/AuNP-enhanced electrochemical platform. Through ingenious design, the presence of OFL triggers the competitive displacement reaction and enables Exo I to hydrolyze the released single-stranded DNA probe containing the sequence of Pb 2+ -DNAzyme, protecting the signal probes on the electrode surface from DNAzyme cleavage, which eventually brings about a remarkable electrochemical signal positively related to the concentration of OFL. MXene/AuNPs with excellent conductivity, large specific surface area, and good chemical stability are employed as the electrode substrate to efficiently accelerate charge transfer and increase the loading capacity for signal probes, leading to the enhancement of signal output and endowing the biosensor with high sensitivity, rapid response, and fine robustness. Taking advantage of OFL recognition–initiated Exo I hydrolysis to DNAzyme, the electrochemical platform with “signal-off/on” mode can detect OFL with good specificity and reduced background interference. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of the involved sensing elements, the developed electrochemical biosensor achieves a low detection limit of 0.47 pg mL −1 with a broad linear range and exhibits satisfactory detection performance in real food samples, indicating potential practical applicability in food safety monitoring. A near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence sensing platform based on NIR carbon dots (CDs), gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and sarcosine-specific aptamers (SA-Apt) was developed for the sensitive and selective detection of sarcosine (SA), a potential biomarker associated with prostate cancer. Nitrogen- and sulfur-co-doped NIR-CDs were synthesized via a solvothermal method using L-glutathione and formamide, while AuNPs were prepared through a classical citrate-reduction approach. The sensing mechanism is based on an aptamer-regulated inner filter effect (IFE) between NIR-CDs and aggregated AuNPs. In the absence of SA, SA-Apt adsorbs onto the AuNP surface, stabilizing the nanoparticles against salt-induced aggregation and preserving the fluorescence of the NIR-CDs. Upon target recognition, SA-Apt preferentially binds to sarcosine and detaches from the AuNP surface, triggering salt-induced aggregation of AuNPs. This aggregation produces significant spectral overlap with the NIR-CD emission band, resulting in efficient fluorescence quenching via the inner filter effect. The incorporation of NIR-CDs enhances detection sensitivity by providing strong fluorescence emission, minimal background interference, and improved photostability. Under optimized conditions, the NIR-CDs/AuNPs/SA-Apt platform exhibited a linear response to sarcosine over the range of 1–15 µM, with a correlation coefficient (R 2 ) of 0.996 and a limit of detection of 0.32 µM (S/ N = 3). The sensing system demonstrates high selectivity, good reproducibility, and stable NIR fluorescence performance. By integrating NIR-emissive carbon dots with plasmonic aggregation and aptamer-mediated regulation, this work provides a robust non-enzymatic strategy for sarcosine detection.

A simple and label-free electrochemical aptasensor was developed for ultra-sensitive determination of chloramphenicol (CAP) based on a 2D transition of metal carbides (MXene) loaded with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The embedded AuNPs not only inhibit the aggregation of MXene sheets, but also improve the quantity of active sites and electronic conductivity. The aptamers (Apts) were able to immobilize on the MXene–AuNP modified electrode surface through Au–S interaction. Upon specifically binding with CAP with high affinity, the CAP–Apt complexes produced low conductivity on the aptasensor surface, leading to a decreased electrochemical signal. The resulting current change was quantitatively correlated with CAP concentration. Under optimized experimental conditions, the constructed aptasensor exhibited a good linear relationship within a wide range of 0.0001–10 nM and with a low detection limit of 0.03 pM for CAP. Moreover, the developed aptasensor has been applied to the determination of CAP concentration in honey samples with satisfactory results. Keywords:MXene;gold nanoparticle;chloramphenicol;electrochemical;aptasensor

A fluorescent probe is described for detection of mercury(II) ion by using L-cysteine-modified gold nanoparticles (Cys-AuNP). These were fabricated by a tube-based redox reaction where Cys acts as both the reducing reagent and capping ligand. The Cys-AuNP display red fluorescence, with excitation/emission peaks at 373/625 nm. Owing to the high-affinity of the Hg(II)–Au(I) interaction and the Hg(II)/carboxy or amino group interaction, the presence of Hg(II) cause selective quenching the fluorescence, while other metal ions do not give such an effect. Based on these findings, a method was designed for the determination of Hg(II) that has attractive figures of merit. These include a low limit of detection (1.3 nM), a wide detection range (from 2 nM to 30µM), and excellent specificity. The method was applied to Hg(II) screening in (spiked) tap and river water, and it gave satisfactory results.
Schematic representation of the application of L-cysteine modified gold nanoparticles (Cys-AuNP) for qualitative and quantitative detection of mercury(II) ions. Based on the interaction between Cys-AuNP and mercury(II) ion to quench the red fluorescence of Cys-AuNP, the target mercury(II) can in turn be determined by a fluorometric method.

This study presents a novel method for the highly sensitive and rapid detection of atrazine (ATZ) residues in water and food samples. This method overcomes the limitations of traditional detection techniques by ingeniously utilizing β -cyclodextrin ( β -CD)-modified gold nanoparticles. The excellent host-guest interactions of the cyclodextrin ring cavity were leveraged to achieve one-step co-conjugation of ssDNA and antibodies onto gold nanoparticles, resulting in a novel immunobiological detection platform for ATZ. By co-encapsulating G-quadruplex (G4) and anti-ATZ monoclonal antibody (mAb) on β -CD@AuNPs (DFP), the platform is endowed with dual functions of molecular recognition and signal amplification. After magnetic separation and enrichment of MMPs/DFP complexes, the G4 on DFP can efficiently catalyze the H 2 O 2 -mediated oxidation reaction of Amplex Red (in the presence of hemin and K + ). Experimental results show that the fluorescence intensity (excitation/emission, 530/588 nm) generated by this catalytic reaction exhibits a good linear relationship with atrazine concentration in the range of 0.01–100 ng·mL −1 (R 2 = 0.9878). More importantly, this method can be used to directly determine the concentration of atrazine in different samples without the need for complex pretreatment. Recovery rates range from 82.4 % to 114 %. This method offers a simple, sensitive and environmentally friendly solution, and provides a new idea for designing rapid sensing method for pesticide residue detection.

Distinct from most electrochemiluminescence sensors that rely on elaborate materials, this study develops an immunosensor using simple materials for low-cost and highly sensitive biological analysis. We elucidated the mechanism of paradoxical amplification of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), designed strategies of bidirectional catalysis, and expanded the application for multibiomarker detection. First, a new understanding of AuNPs’ catalytic role was established through investigating the inhibitory effects of five phenolic compounds on the luminol–H2O2 ECL system, and an AuNP-induced “paradoxical amplification” of phenolic electrochemiluminescence (ECL) inhibition was first identified. Contrary to the common view that AuNPs always enhance ECL, here, AuNPs amplified the inhibitory effect of phenolics, thereby reducing the ECL signal. Such a mechanism was validated via electrochemistry-mass spectrometry. Second, a methodological innovation is presented: a switch-type immunosensor with bidirectional catalytic amplification via dynamic conversion. Specifically, the same catalyst flexibly switches between enhancement and inhibition: horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and AuNPs first act synergistically to enhance the initial ECL signal of the luminol–H2O2 system; then, alkaline phosphatase serves as a “switch” and introduces phenolic compounds, triggering HRP and AuNPs to automatically convert into signal-inhibiting catalysts. This induces multiple signal attenuation via ECL energy resonance transfer, radical quenching, and mass transfer hindrance, leading to a rapid decrease in ECL response. Finally, a highly sensitive coupled enzyme-linked attenuated ECL immunoassay involving AuNPs was constructed and successfully applied to the specific detection of cardiac troponin I and erythropoietin with a wide linear range (from fg/mL to ng/mL), and a detection limit as low as fg/mL.

The safety of Chinese herbal medicines (CHMs) is compromised by heavy metal contamination, particularly lead (
), which requires ultrasensitive detection methods to mitigate health risks. Herein, we report a gold nanoparticle (AuNP)-amplified whispering gallery mode (WGM) biosensor for highly sensitive and specific
monitoring. The sensing platform leverages the strong volumetric effect of AuNPs to magnify subtle DNA conformational changes induced by
-dependent DNAzyme cleavage. When the DNAzyme cleaves its substrate strand, AuNP-tagged oligonucleotides are released, causing a pronounced shift in the WGM resonance wavelength. The incorporation of AuNPs significantly enhanced detection sensitivity, achieving a limit of detection of 14.15 nM—a notable improvement over AuNP-free systems. The sensor demonstrated excellent selectivity against interfering species and successfully quantified
in complex CHM samples such as goji berry and astragalus, showing high consistency with standard ICP-MS measurements. This AuNP-enhanced WGM strategy offers a powerful tool for quality assurance in medicinal products and environmental safety monitoring.

Intrinsically coupled dual-mode LFIA: color rise as fluorescence quenches. • Reciprocal signals enables built-in self-verification and internal calibration. • ATT–Arg Au nanoclusters provide bright, stable green emission (QY 65.8%). • LODs: 0.079 ng mL −1 (color) and 0.006 ng mL −1 (fluorescence) for PCT. Procalcitonin (PCT) is a clinically important biomarker for bacterial infections and sepsis, motivating rapid and sensitive point-of-care quantification. Herein, a colorimetric–fluorescence dual-mode lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) was developed by integrating gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and arginine/6-Aza-2-thiothymine-stabilized gold nanoclusters (ATT-Arg-AuNCs). AuNPs conjugated with detection antibodies served as colorimetric reporters, while AuNCs associated with capture antibodies formed an immobilized fluorescent donor layer on the test line. Upon PCT-mediated sandwich assembly, AuNP enrichment intensified the colorimetric band and simultaneously imposed nanoscale AuNP–AuNC co-localization, activating metal-induced nonradiative dissipation and proximity-regulated fluorescence quenching (intrinsically coupled “color-on/fluorescence-off” transduction). Under optimized conditions, the colorimetric mode (T/C) exhibited a linear response over 0.5–10 ng mL −1 with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.079 ng mL −1 , whereas the fluorescence mode (ΔF) provided a wider linear range of 0.05–10 ng mL −1 with a lower LOD of 0.006 ng mL −1 . In spiked serum samples ( n = 3), recoveries were 95.1%–105.1% (colorimetric) and 92.3%–116.4% (fluorescence), with relative standard deviations <10%, demonstrating acceptable accuracy and precision in complex matrices. This intrinsically coupled dual-mode LFIA combines visual screening with sensitive quantification in a single strip and offers a generalizable strategy for extending proximity-gated dual-readout LFIAs to other biomarkers via antibody substitution. Acetamiprid (ACE), a next-generation chlorinated neonicotinoid insecticide, has been extensively employed for pest control. However, its excessive residues in food and the environment have raised significant concerns regarding human health. To address the need for a simple, accurate, and efficient ACE detection method, a novel ratiometric aptamer sensor was developed based on the dual signal amplification strategy of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The internal reference system was established by the electrostatic adsorption/embedding interaction of methylene blue (MB) with double-stranded deoxyribonucleic acid (dsDNA), and the reaction site was expanded using AuNPs loaded with multiplexed DNA 2 sequences, which was combined with the in situ grafting of conductive polymers by ATRP to achieve signal multiplication. Under the optimized conditions, the sensor exhibited good linearity in the range 70 pg/mL ~ 300 ng/mL with a detection limit of 19.26 pg/mL. During the real sample analysis, the sensor revealed remarkable stability, reproducibility, and sensitivity in the detection of ACE residues in food. The design principle of such a sensor provides a reliable tool for accurate monitoring of pesticides. Graphical abstract

Based on the hydrogel-AuNP supramolecular sphere (H-Au), a label-free and real-time surface plasmon resonance imaging biosensor has been developed for highly sensitive and specific determination of prostate cancer cell-derived exosomes. After integrating the signal amplification effect of the mass cumulative hydrogel and the LSPR effect of AuNPs with high specific aptamer, the SPRi biosensor for exosome detection exhibited a wide linear range from 1.00 × 10 5 to 1.00 × 10 7 particles/mL with a limit of detection of 1.00 × 10 5 particles/mL. Most importantly, with a strong correlation between the SPRi signal and the t-PSA value measured by the clinical chemiluminescence immunoassay, this biosensor displayed excellent practicability for human serum analysis, which exhibits great potential applications in disease diagnosis and bioanalysis. Graphical abstract
Prostate cancer has been one of the most threatening diseases in human life and health nowadays. In particular, as cancer metastasizes, it is more likely to cause fracture, paraplegia, and even fatal consequences. However, the predominant t-PSA test needs further improvement for the deficiencies of limited specificity and sensitivity, which is prone to false positive. As one of the noninvasive markers of liquid biopsies, exosome has the potential to be a substitute for t-PSA, which can provide specific and predictive information in disease diagnosis and prognosis. Herein, based on the hydrogel-AuNP supramolecular sphere (H-Au), a label-free and real-time surface plasmon resonance biosensor has been developed for highly sensitive and specific detection of prostate cancer cell-derived exosomes. After integrating the signal amplification effect of mass cumulative hydrogel and LSPR effect of AuNPs with high specific aptamer, this developed SPRi biosensor for exosome detection exhibited a wide linear range from 1.00 × 10 5 to 1.00 × 10 7 particles/mL with a limit of detection down to 1.00 × 10 5 particles/mL. Most importantly, with a strong correlation between the SPRi signal and the t-PSA value measured by the clinical chemiluminescence immunoassay, this biosensor displayed excellent practicability in human serum, which exhibited great potential applications in disease diagnosis and bioanalysis.
