Single-atom niobium doped BCN nanotubes for highly sensitive electrochemical detection of nitrobenzene

Meng Li,Xianyun Peng,Xijun Liu,Huaisheng Wang,Shusheng Zhang,Guangzhi Hu

Herein, single-atom niobium-doped boron–carbon–nitrogen nanotubes (SANb-BCN) were synthesized and utilized to fabricate an electrochemical sensor for the detection of nitrobenzene (NB), an environmental pollutant. SANb-BCN were characterized through scanning transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and Raman spectroscopy. The Nb-BNC material modified on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) showed an excellent electrochemical response behavior toward NB. The SANb-BCN-modified GCE (SANb-BCN/GCE) gave rise to a prominent NB reduction peak at −0.6 V, which was positively shifted by 120 mV from the NB reduction peak of the bare GCE. Furthermore, the NB peak current (55.74 μA) obtained using SANb-BCN/GCE was nearly 42-fold higher than that using the bare GCE (1.32 μA), indicating that SANb-BCN/GCE is a highly sensitive electrochemical sensor for NB. An ultralow limit of detection (0.70 μM, S/N = 3) was also achieved. Furthermore, the SANb-BCN/GCE sensor was found to possess favorable anti-interference ability during NB detection; thus, the presence of various organic and inorganic coexisting species, including Mg2+, Cr6+, Cu2+, K+, Ca2+, NH4+, Cd2+, urea, 1-bromo-4-nitrobenzene, 3-hydroxybenzoic, terephthalic acid, 1-iodo-4-nitrobenzene, and toluene, minimally affected the NB detection signal. Notably, the SANb-BNC sensor material exhibited high sensitivity and specificity toward detection of NB in environmental samples. Thus, the use of the proposed sensor will serve as an effective alternative method for the identification and treatment of pollutants.

BCN nanosheets derived from coconut shells with outstanding microwave absorption and thermal conductive properties

Pengpeng Mou,Jinchuan Zhao,Guizhen Wang,Shaohua Shi,Gengping Wan,Maofan Zhou,Zhen Deng,Shengjie Teng,Guilong Wang

Multifunctional materials with high-efficiency microwave absorption properties and effective thermal conductivity are urgently required for modern electronic devices and systems. Herein, we successfully prepared biomass-derived borocarbonitride (BCN) nanosheets with excellent electromagnetic wave absorption and thermal management properties by a general, green and economical strategy using biomass coconut shell as carbon source, and explored the effect of the coconut-shell charcoal content on its performance. The as-prepared BCN nanosheets exhibit a large specific surface area, which is favorable to the formation of conductive network and multiple reflection and scattering, thus resulting in strong absorption. The results show that the minimum reflection loss value of −54.24 dB is obtained at 5.2 GHz, and the maximum effective absorption bandwidth reaches up to 4.16 GHz with a thickness of only 1.4 mm. Furthermore, the thermal diffusivities and conductivities of the BCN/natural rubber composites are significantly improved. Thus, this research offers an idea for exploring high-performance multifunctional absorbing materials.

Hierarchical core–shell BCN@CoNi@PANI with synergistic dielectric/magnetic loss for ultrawideband microwave absorption

Guo Sijia,Qin Jianguo,Liu Xiangdong,Yang Chuanhua,Song Baisen,Zhu Yongchang,Li Zizhou

Lightweight broadband microwave absorbers with strong attenuation remain challenging because efficient absorption requires balanced impedance matching and electromagnetic loss over a wide frequency range. Herein, hierarchical core–shell BCN@CoNi@PANI (BCNPa) composites were rationally designed by integrating BCN, CoNi alloy, and conductive PANI. BCN serves as a lightweight dielectric substrate, CoNi provides magnetic loss, and the outer PANI shell regulates dielectric response and conductive loss. The electromagnetic properties of BCNPa can be effectively tuned by adjusting the PANI content. The excellent absorption performance over 2–18 GHz originates from the synergistic effects of impedance matching, dielectric loss, magnetic loss, and hierarchical structural attenuation. Dielectric loss is mainly related to defect-induced dipole polarization, interface-related polarization relaxation, and conductive loss from the π-conjugated PANI shell, while magnetic loss arises from natural resonance, exchange resonance, and eddy current loss of CoNi. Benefiting from optimized dielectric–magnetic balance, BCNPa-2 achieves ultralow minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) of − 81.4 dB at 14.12 GHz and an ultrabroad effective absorption bandwidth ( EAB ) covering nearly the entire measured range. This work provides an effective strategy for high-performance broadband microwave absorbers.

BCN materials with adjustable active sites as heterogeneous acid–base catalysts for Knoevenagel condensation reaction

Guichuan Xu,Huicai Zheng,Xiaoju Zhang,Wen Li,Limei Zhou,Li Qin

The Knoevenagel condensation reaction is one of the most effective methods for the formation of C–C bonds. However, developing efficient heterogeneous catalysts for the Knoevenagel condensation reaction is imperative. In this study, a series of boron carbon nitride (BCN) catalysts with adjustable active sites were designed via molecular self-assembly and calcination-temperature adjustment. The BCN materials synthesized at a calcination temperature of 750 °C (BCN-750) had the largest number of active sites and exhibited excellent activity, with a yield of 96% in the condensation reaction of benzaldehyde and malononitrile in only 4 min at room temperature. The excellent catalytic activity was attributed to the B and N species at the B–N–C sites, which functioned as acids and bases, respectively, to catalyze the Knoevenagel condensation reaction. This result was confirmed by temperature-programmed desorption of CO 2 (CO 2 TPD), temperature-programmed desorption of NH 3 (NH 3 TPD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and 11 B solid-state magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. In addition, aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes were successfully converted into their corresponding products. Analysis of the catalytic mechanism revealed that the deprotonation of malononitrile to form a carbanion was the rate-determining step.

The charge redistribution induced by Cu-Co bimetallic synergies efficiently promotes electrochemical reduction to ammonia

Yi Li,Shiyin Ji,Yangzhou Fan,Tao Duan,Youkui Zhang

The Haber-Bosch process for ammonia synthesis is energy-intensive and environmentally damaging, while nitrate wastewater poses risks to both the environment and human health. Utilizing electrochemical method could remove nitrate in the sewage and a part of nitrate would been reduced to ammonia provided a highly efficient approach for nitrate removal and ammonia synthesis. In this study, incorporated Cu and Co on boron-nitrogen-doped graphite (BCN) substrate with eminent conductivity synthesized BCN-CuCo catalyst. On the catalyst, Cu and Co gave rise to synergistic effect which aroused charge redistribution between Cu and Co, which facilitated the nitrate adsorption, accelerated catalytic kinetics for nitrate reduction. BCN-CuCo catalyst demonstrated eminent performance for nitrate reduction, achieving a high Faradic efficiency of 95.8 % at −0.46 V vs RHE and an impressive ammonia yield rate of 12321.6 μg h −1 mg cat -1 at −0.86 V vs RHE in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 with 0.1 M KNO 3 . It also showed excellent performance in HNO 3 and neutral media, expanding its application scope. Ultimately, the BCN-CuCo facilitated the production of 320 mg of ammonium diuranate in a neutral medium, supporting sustainable resource utilization. This research provides an efficient strategy for ammonia synthesis and introduces a method for recycling resources from uranium and nitrate-contaminated wastewater.

Bridge-grafted EG/BCN encapsulated PW with effectively improved thermal conductivity and battery thermal management performance

Siyue Hui,Huanzhi Zhang,Guangpeng Xu,Junhao Zhang,Fen Xu,Lixian Sun,Xiangcheng Lin,Lei Ma,Hongliang Peng,Bin Li,Erhu Yan,Hans Jürgen Seifert

Although phase change materials (PCMs) have been widely utilized in thermal management of batteries, they still confront the challenges of high cost and low thermal conductivity. In this study, low-cost composite PCMs with high energy-storage capacity, thermal conductivity and outstanding thermal management performance were proposed by utilizing the synergetic porous structure of expanded graphite (EG) and boron carbon nitrogen (BCN) nanospheres through bridge-grafting method to encapsulate paraffin wax (PW), which effectively enhanced the anti-leakage and comprehensive performance. The incorporation of BCN nanospheres endowed the composite PCMs with extremely improved thermal conductivity of 1.611 W/(m·K), which was 421 % higher than that of pure PW. And the highly improved melting and crystal latent heat of the composite PCMs reached 184.37 J/g and 185.39 J/g, respectively, which also exhibited excellently thermal-cycling stability. The photo-thermal conversion efficiency of the composite PCMs was enhanced to 92.6 %. When applied to battery thermal management, the maximum temperature of battery wrapped with the composite PCMs was 11.9 °C lower than that of the batteries without PCMs, which confirmed an outstanding battery thermal management effect of the composite PCMs.

Synthesis of BCN nanoribbons from coconut shells using as high-performance anode materials for lithium-ion batteries

Shuaifeng Chen,Huan Yang,Qing Chen,Longyang Liu,Xue Hou,Lijie Luo,Chunfu Lin,Changjiu Li,Yongjun Chen

A green and efficient route to the synthesis of boron carbonitride (BCN) nanoribbons was demonstrated using waste coconut shells, boric acid and urea as the raw materials. The BCN nanoribbons were then applied as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The BCN nanoribbons possessed high specific surface area and porosity because of the inherent characteristics of the coconut shells, providing multiple active sites and diffusion channels for Li + ions. High specific capacity, excellent rate capability and cycling stability were achieved especially when the carbon content in BCN is relatively high. The average reversible capacity and the retention rate reached 800 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 and 98% after 1000 cycles, respectively. This route not only paved a new way to the synthesis of BCN nanoribbons, but also realized the reuse of waste natural resources for fabricating LIBs anode materials with excellent performance.

Synthesis of hierarchical porous BCN using ternary deep eutectic solvent as precursor and template for aerobic oxidative desulfurization

Yanchen Wei,Peiwen Wu,Jing Luo,Li Dai,Hongping Li,Ming Zhang,Linlin Chen,Leigang Wang,Wenshuai Zhu,Huaming Li

Boron carbon nitride (BCN) has exhibited superior aerobic catalytic performance in oxidation reactions. Herein, the hierarchical porous BCN catalyst was synthesized using a ternary deep eutectic solvent (DES) composed of boric acid , urea and choline chloride as the precursor and template. The as-prepared BCN exhibited impressive catalytic performance in oxidative desulfurization of fuel. Under the optimized conditions, the BCN catalyst can reach 98.4% sulfur removal in 4 h and recycle 5 times with a little activity decrease. Experimental results revealed that the excellent catalytic activity was found to be originated from an improved electron delocalization. Combined with the density functional theory (DFT), the improved electron delocalization increased the electronic density of the BCN, promoting the activation of dioxygen. This strategy provides a novel approach for the design of high-performance catalyst in oxidative desulfurization.

Co-doped black carbon nitride (BCN)@TiO₂ heterojunction: A bifunctional material for simultaneous solar evaporation and photothermal catalytic wastewater purification

Guohui Liang,Bohai Li,Lifen Liu

In response to the dual challenges of water scarcity and organic pollution, this study developed a dual-functional solar evaporator based on cobalt-doped BCN@TiO₂ heterojunctions (Co-BCT). The Co-BCT composite was prepared using a combination of sol-gel method and the hydrothermal method, and is uniformly embedded in a superhydrophilic melamine foam scaffold. Distinct from most reported integrated SDIE (solar desalination integrated with evaporation) -AOP (advanced oxidation process) systems that solely rely on photothermal-photocatalytic coupling, this system further integrates a Z -scheme heterojunction for efficient charge separation, a Co 2+ /Co 3+ redox cycle for boosted peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, and a superhydrophilic SA (sodium alginate) -MF (melamine foam) scaffold for self-desalination and rapid water transport—enabling multi-field synergy that addresses the trade-off between evaporation efficiency and pollutant degradation in complex systems. When exposed to simulated sunlight (1 Sun), the device achieves an evaporation rate of 2.51 kg·m −2 ·h −1 in pure water and 2.42 kg·m −2 ·h −1 in simulated seawater (3.5 wt% NaCl solution) with electrical stimulation. The system can efficiently degrade organic pollutants under solar power by activating PMS. Thanks to Co 2+ /Co 3+ -mediated PMS activation and a multi-pathway reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation mechanism (including ·OH, SO₄· − , ·O₂ − and h + ), over 98 % of Rhodamine B (RhB) is degraded within 30 min. Compared with recent Co-based PMS activators that suffer from limited ROS types or Co leaching, the atomically dispersed Co anchored at BCN nitrogen vacancies in Co-BCT not only enhances the generation of multi-type ROS but also improves catalytic stability, with no significant performance decay after 5 cycles. When applied to effluent from the biological treatment of coking wastewater, the system removes nearly all COD (51.36 mg/L to ~0 mg/L), with conductivity decreasing sharply from 2423.9 μS/cm to 21.2 μS/cm. The device also demonstrates excellent salt tolerance (evaporation rate ≥ 1.8 kg·m −2 ·h −1 in 15 wt% NaCl solution) and fouling resistance, as well as being applicable to wastewater treatment. This proves its feasibility and sustainability for use in complex wastewater purification and solar-driven seawater desalination.

Two-dimensional BCN nanosheets self-assembled with hematite nanocrystals for sensitively detecting trace toxic Pb(II) ions in natural water

Yelin Zhu,Xinzhong Wang,Ping Wang,Jian Zhu,Yingnan He,Xiuxiu Jia,Fengqin Chang,Huaisheng Wang,Guangzhi Hu

In the present work, hematite–boron-carbonitride (Fe 2 O 3 –BCN) nanosheets were synthesized by a simple hydrothermal reaction and the following high temperature treatment. The morphology, structure and chemical composition of the as-prepared material were carefully characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The Fe 2 O 3 –BCN nanosheets were used to modified on the surface of the glassy carbon electrode to fabricate an electrochemical sensor for lead ions (Pb(II)) via differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV). At the same time, the influence of the modification concentration, solution acidity, deposition potential and deposition time on response peak current of Pb(II) at the Fe 2 O 3 –BCN-based electrochemical sensor was well investigated. Under the optimized conditions, the electrochemical signal and concentration of Pb(II) show two-stage linear relationship in the range of 0.5 – 40 μg/L and 40 –140 μg/L, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.129 μg/L. The Fe 2 O 3 –BCN-based electrochemical sensor shows excellent selectivity and anti-interference ability in the anti-interference experiments and actual sample analysis experiments, revealing its broad application in environmental monitoring of Pb(II).

Synergistic Dual-Active Sites Engineering in ZIF-Derived CoOx/B-Modified g-C3N4 for Efficient CO2 Cycloaddition Under Mild Conditions

Tianao Zhang,Haolong Huang,Yunchong Wang,Qianqian Zhao,Rui Han,Qingling Liu

Graphical CoO x /BCN catalyst with dual active sites was successfully synthesized. This catalyst exhibits excellent selectivity (99%) and a cyclic carbonate yield (98%) in the CO 2 cycloaddition reaction with the nucleophilic reagent KI under solvent-free and mild reaction conditions. This catalyst also has good stability and reusability, providing a new direction for the design of high-performance CO 2 cycloaddition catalysts. The carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) cycloaddition reaction provides an efficient route to achieve resource utilization of CO 2 . However, the inherent chemical stability of CO 2 itself hinders its efficient transformation into cyclic carbonates. Herein, the CoO x /BCN catalyst was successfully prepared by a simple deposition method. The CoO x /BCN exhibited excellent catalytic performance in the CO 2 cycloaddition reaction synergistically catalyzed with the nucleophilic reagent KI under solvent-free and mild reaction conditions (80 °C, 0.8 MPa, 6 h). The yield of cyclic carbonate was 98% and the selectivity was 99%, which was significantly superior to CoO x /CN catalyst (with a cyclic carbonate yield of 73.7%). Furthermore, after six cyclic reactions, CoO x /BCN still maintained a yield of over 93%. It was found that after boron (B) was doped into graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ), the generated ─NB(OH) 2 group on CoO x /BCN effectively activated the epoxide. Importantly, the interaction between B-doped g-C 3 N 4 and CoO x induced the generation of abundant oxygen vacancies, which provided sufficient active sites for CO 2 adsorption and activation. In addition, carbonates were identified as the main reaction intermediates by in situ DRIFTS, and the possible reaction pathways of the CoO x /BCN catalyst were proposed. Therefore, this work provides new idea for the design of catalysts for CO 2 cycloaddition.

C-doping into h-BN at low annealing temperature by alkaline earth metal borate for photoredox activity

Myonghak Ri,Kwanghak Choe,Kumchol Kim,Yan Gao,Zhiyong Tang

BCN (boron carbon nitride) nanosheets are promising photocatalyst materials for solar fuel production by visible light-driven water splitting and CO2 reduction due to their tunable band gap and unique properties. C-doping into h-BN by thermal annealing makes possible the preparation of BCN nanosheets with photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation, but it generally requires a very high temperature (>1250 °C) from the thermodynamic viewpoint. Here, we report a new method to prepare BCN nanosheets with visible light-photocatalytic activity at lower annealing temperature (1000 °C) than equilibrium by adding alkaline earth metal compounds. BCN nanosheets formed in borate melt show a clear layered structure, tunable bandgap and photocatalytic activity for water splitting and CO2 reduction under visible light illumination. This provides a direction for doping other elements into h-BN at low annealing temperature by alkaline earth metal borates.
