In order to prepare polymer dielectric materials with high energy storage density, a series of polyimide (PI) based Janus composite films were prepared by metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) material (UiO-66) with high dielectric constant ( ɛ r ) and boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) with high breakdown strength ( E b ). As reported, the UiO-66 can significantly improve the ɛ r of the composites. The ɛ r of 20 wt% UiO-66/PI film is 10.51 at 10 3 Hz, which is 3.1 times that of pure PI film (3.39 at 10 3 Hz). However, the E b of 20 wt% UiO-66/PI is only 58 MV m −1 , which is only 16.51% of pure PI (352 MV m −1 ). The sharp decline in E b reduces the energy storage capacity of the composites. To solve this problem, first, BNNSs with an average diameter of 2 μm and a thickness of 1.36 nm (about 4–5 layer) were obtained by hydrothermal reflux stripping. BNNSs/PI//UiO-66/PI Janus composite films with double-layer structure were prepared by directly casting BNNSs/PI on the surface of UiO-66/PI. For 0.3 wt% BNNSs/PI//10 wt% UiO-66/PI, the calculated energy storage density ( U e ) is 5.75 J cm −3 at 140 MV m −1 , which is 3.57 times that of pure PI film (1.61 J cm −3 at 140 MV m −1 ). Meanwhile, the charge discharge efficiency is 82.55% (at 140 MV m −1 ). Highlights BNNSs prepared by hydrothermal reflux stripping have fewer layers. BNNSs/PI composites improve the E b of UiO-66/PI composites by Janus structure. The U e of BP-0.3//UP-10 composites with Janus structure was 5.75 J cm −3 .

The construction of effective heat transfer routines is becoming more important because of the fast development of modern electronics. However, traditional network templates with fixed size cannot meet the various demands on the shape of products. Herein, a facile construction of a shape-programmable 3D thermal network for epoxy composites is provided from the inspiration of meringue. Driven by the synergistic effect of silicon carbide nanowires (SiCNWs) and boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs), the thermal conductivity (TC) of BNNSs/SiCNWs/epoxy composites with a 3D network is successfully enhanced to 0.69 W m –1 K –1 at low filler content (2.78 wt%), 3.8 times in comparison with neat epoxy, and the η (TC efficiency of filler) reaches 101. Meanwhile, the mechanical and thermal properties of composites are also enhanced ( E ' from 2.47 GPa (epoxy) to ≈3.50 GPa, T g from 123 to 137 °C at 2.78 wt% BNNSs/SiCNWs content). This method may offer a promising prospect for the application in thermal management fields.

Carbon nanotubes are widely used to enhance polymer thermal management due to their excellent thermal conductivity. However, in the field of insulating materials, the high electrical conductivity of carbon nanotubes greatly limits their filling content. At present, realizing carbon-based polymer with high thermal conductivity but electrical insulation is a problem. In this work, the surface of carbon nanotubes was acidified and grafted with diethylenetriamine (DETA). In addition, carbon nanotubes and boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) were co-filled in epoxy resin to construct a three-dimensional thermal conductivity network. The results showed that the electrical conductivity of the DETA grafted carbon nanotubes/epoxy composite decreased significantly, the dielectric constant decreased from 9.73 to 4.3, and the dielectric loss decreased from 0.38 to 0.015. When BNNS and MWCNT formed a thermal conductivity network inside the epoxy resin, the nanocomposite exhibit thermal conductivity enhancement of about 819 %, which realized the enhancement of thermal conductivity of nanocomposites at very low filling content. This strategy provides a new idea for the preparation of carbon-based insulating composites, which is expected to meet the demand of the modern electronic industry.

The confinement effect known as efficient strategy to enhance the heterocatalytic activity and stability, but a clear view regarding the role of encapsulated overlayers is far from convincing at present, especially, the penetration of substrates with different size. Herein, the experimental evidence about the impacts of BN overlayers on hydrogenation is obtained over Co@BN/BN model catalysts with tuned thinness, in which BN overlayers encapsuled Co particles that dispersed on the defective BN supports, fabricating by the nitridizing of ball-milled BN microplates under NH 3 atmosphere. The thinness and crystallinity of BN shells was simply tuned by controlling the pyrolyzed temperature (600–900 °C). The cinnamaldehyde (CAL) selective hydrogenation is taken as probe reaction due to (1) both larger CAL and small H 2 molecule involved simultaneously, (2) the middle C C and terminal C O bonds all involved. Combined with structural analysis, the results demonstrate that small H 2 molecule can penetrate into the metal-cover interface through the defect sites, then inner Co core dissociate it to atomic H, and the hydrogenation mainly resulting from the spillover of H atoms which occurred on the BN surface. As a result, the thickest BN shells (∼3.4 nm) with ordered-layer-lattice significantly hindered the adsorption and activation of CAL, also the longest H spillover distance led to the lowest activity of Co@BN/BN-900. Instead, Co@BN/BN-600 with merely 2 ∼ 3 overlayers presented the most efficient and highly chemoselective hydrogenation activity. The ultrathin but turbostratic BN overlayers provide more migrating sites also shortened the H spillover distance effectively, and the more favorable C O hydrogenation was also achieved driven by the steric hindrance effect of thinner BN shells. These observations provide new insights towards understanding of confined effect on catalysis process through the accurate regulation of BN shells properties.

Ball milling is a widely used method to produce graphene and other two-dimensional (2D) materials for both industry and research. Conventional ball milling generates strong impact forces, producing small and thick nanosheets that limit their applications. In this study, a viscous solvent-assisted planetary ball milling method has been developed to produce large thin 2D nanosheets. The viscous solvent simultaneously increases the exfoliation energy (Ee) and lowers the impact energy (Ei). Simulations show a giant ratio of η = Ee/Ei, for the viscous solvent, 2 orders of magnitude larger than that of water. The method provides both a high exfoliation yield of 74%, a high aspect ratio of the generated nanosheets of 571, and a high quality for a representative 2D material of boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs). The large thin BNNSs can be assembled into high-performance functional films, such as separation membranes and thermally conductive flexible films with some performance parameters better than those 2D nanosheets produced by chemical exfoliation methods.

To overcome the challenges of agglomeration and the difficulty in achieving oriented alignment of hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) in epoxy matrices, a magnetically responsive Fe 3 O 4 /BNNSs composite was successfully prepared. Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles grown in situ on the BNNS surface impart magnetic responsiveness to the nanosheets, enabling their alignment under an external magnetic field, while the BNNSs themselves serve as the primary impermeable barrier filler. By applying a horizontal magnetic field during the curing stage, the nanofillers are driven to align parallel to the substrate, forming an ordered layered structure. Comprehensive characterization confirmed the in-situ growth of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles on the BNNS surface and demonstrated the composite’s strong superparamagnetic behavior. Performance evaluation revealed that the epoxy coating containing magnetically aligned Fe 3 O 4 /BNNS fillers (BFM/EP) exhibited the most superior overall properties. After 20 days of immersion in deionized water, the BFM/EP coating displayed a remarkably low water absorption of only 6.48%, compared with 19.28% for the pure epoxy coating, indicating significantly enhanced anti-permeability. Benefiting from the improved barrier performance, the BFM/EP coating also retained the highest adhesion after 14 days of salt-spray exposure. Long-term electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) over 40 days further demonstrated that BFM/EP exhibited the highest coating resistance (1.93 × 10 8 Ω·cm 2 ), the lowest coating capacitance (1.99 × 10 -10 F·cm 2 ), and the largest low-frequency impedance modulus (1.69 × 10 10 Ω·cm 2 ). These results indicate that the dominant enhancement in corrosion protection originates from the magnetic-field-induced parallel alignment of high-aspect-ratio BNNSs, while Fe 3 O 4 functionalization mainly enables magnetic manipulation and contributes to improved filler dispersion. The resulting ordered filler network effectively enhances the tortuous diffusion pathway for corrosive species, leading to superior impermeability and long-lasting corrosion protection.

As an important component of flexible Zinc-air batteries (ZAB), the gel electrolyte has a direct impact on battery performances and applications. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a commonly used electrolyte matrix material in ZAB, which has film-forming and environment-friendly, but poor mechanical properties and ionic conductivity limit its application in flexible ZAB. As a new type of environment-friendly solvent, deep eutectic solvent (DES) not only has the extremely low volatility, excellent electrochemical stability and excellent thermal stability, but also has the advantages of low cost and stable performances. Hydroxy-boron nitride nanosheets (OH-BNNSs) are obtained by grafting hydroxyl groups onto boron nitride nanosheets. In this paper, PVA was modified by carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) firstly. After adding DES and OH-BNNSs, the deep eutectic gel electrolyte was obtained by cryogenic freezing. The optimized system containing 50 wt% DES and 1 wt% OH-BNNSs demonstrated remarkable enhancements. Ionic conductivity increased to 137.61 mS·cm −1 , representing a 1.86-fold improvement over conventional PVA-based electrolytes. Electrolyte uptake rate reached 183.5% with 88.7% retention rate after 12 h, achieving 2.03-fold and 1.92-fold of the performance of PVA, respectively. Mechanical properties showed substantial gains, with elongation at break escalating to 586% (3.66 times better than PVA) and tensile strength registering 0.55 MPa. When implemented in ZAB, power density peaked at 35.3 mW·cm −2 , surpassing pure PVA by 4.53-fold. Cycling stability exhibited prolonged durability, sustaining 110 cycles over 36.7 h at 1 mA·cm −2 . Single discharge duration attained 10.7 h. Our paper provides design scheme and theoretical references for application and progress of flexible devices.

Using a one-step co-reduction method, AgCu bimetallic nanoparticles have been successfully loaded onto few-layer boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs), which possess high thermal conductivity. The structure and morphology of both the support and the catalyst were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Furthermore, the influence of near-infrared laser irradiation on the catalytic performance of the catalyst was investigated. The study found that the Ag 1 Cu 1 /BNNSs nanocomposite exhibited significant catalytic activity in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP). This nanocomposite had an activation energy of only 42.9 kJ/mol and maintained high catalytic activity even after six cycles. Additionally, it was found that near-infrared laser irradiation further enhanced the catalytic activity of the composite material. This enhancement was primarily attributed to the photothermal effect of Ag nanoparticles. Moreover, the BNNSs possess high thermal conductivity. They transferred the photothermal energy generated by the Ag nanoparticles to the external environment, thereby further enhancing the local thermal effect of the catalyst. This work provided a foundation for advancing near-infrared or solar photothermal-enhanced bimetallic nanocomposite catalytic systems.

Filling epoxy resin (EP) with boron nitride (BN) nanosheets (BNNSs) can effectively improve the thermal conductivity of BN/EP nanocomposites. However, due to the few hydroxyl groups on the surface of BNNSs, silane coupling agent (SCA) cannot effectively modify BNNSs. The agglomeration of BNNSs is severe, which significantly reduces the AC breakdown strength of the composites. Therefore, this paper uses atmospheric pressure bipolar nanosecond pulse dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) Ar+H2O low temperature plasma to hydroxylate BNNSs to improve the AC breakdown strength and thermal conductivity of the composites. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) shows that the hydroxyl content of the BNNSs surface increases nearly two fold after plasma modification. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) show that plasma modification enhances the dehydration condensation reaction of BNNSs with SCA, and the coating amount of SCA on the BNNSs surface increases by 45%. The breakdown test shows that the AC breakdown strength of the composites after plasma modification is improved under different filling contents. With the filling content of BNNSs increasing from 10% to 20%, the composites can maintain a certain insulation strength. Meanwhile, the thermal conductivity of the composites increases by 67% as the filling content increases from 10% (SCA treated) to 20% (plasma and SCA treated). Therefore, the plasma hydroxylation modification method used in this paper can provide a basis for the preparation of high thermal conductivity insulating materials. Keywords:bipolar nanosecond pulse;low temperature plasma;hydroxylation modification;BN nanosheets;nanocomposites;breakdown strength;thermal conductivity

Superhydrophobic nanofiller-modified organic coatings are widely used for metal corrosion protection but face critical bottlenecks: poor interfacial compatibility with resin matrices, insufficient hydrophobic durability under harsh conditions, and a trade-off between hydrophobicity and mechanical strength. To address these issues, this study developed a triple-synergistic modification strategy to synthesize a novel superhydrophobic filler (BNNSs@PDA/ODA/TiO₂) for reinforcing silicone epoxy (SE) coatings. Polydopamine (PDA) acts as a bionic bridge for multi-point anchoring, octadecylamine (ODA) forms a 3D hydrophobic network, and titanium dioxide (TiO₂) enables micropore filling and enhanced crosslinking. The BNNSs@PDA/ODA/TiO₂-SE composite coating exhibits significantly improved mechanical properties, including enhanced storage modulus, glass transition temperature, and crosslinking density, with interfacial chemical bonding being the dominant driver for performance enhancement. In simulated marine environments, the composite coating shows excellent long-term corrosion resistance, maintaining strong protective capability after prolonged immersion and effectively inhibiting corrosion at scratch sites. A coupled “diffusion-electrochemical reaction” model verifies that the superhydrophobic labyrinth effect and interfacial bonding synergistically inhibit corrosion mechanisms. This work provides a scalable design strategy for high-performance composite coatings integrating mechanical robustness and long-term corrosion protection, addressing the practical demand for durable coatings in harsh environments such as marine engineering and shipbuilding.

Phase change materials (PCMs), as promising energy saving and heat-dissipation materials, have the advantage of a high latent heat in the phase transition process, and thus have huge potential applications in electronic devices, powerful batteries and modern buildings. The aspirational target is to achieve excellent thermal conductivity (TC) and extraordinary shape stability in PCMs, while simultaneously maintaining their high latent heat. In this study, an anisotropic and robust three-dimensional interconnected cellulose/boron nitride nanosheet (BNNS) skeleton was designed within polyethylene glycol (PEG) composites via the self-assembly of concentrated cellulose/BNNS aqueous mixtures followed by vacuum impregnation and cold compressing. By virtue of this typical structure, the PEG composites could take full advantage of the high in-plane TC of the BNNSs due to their efficient orientation during the cold compressing process and immensely diminish the phonon scattering among the BNNS pathways due to the overlapping BNNS contact. In addition, a robust cellulose/BNNSs scaffold with impressive compressive strength (3.03 MPa) similar to reinforced concrete was obtained, which benefitted from the cooperative reinforcement of the cellulose nanofibers and high-strength BNNSs and could also avoid any shape change when vacuum-impregnated with PEG. As a result, the in-plane TC of the PEG composites reached as high as 4.764 W m−1 K−1 at only 10 vol% loading, which is almost 1400% of that of pure PEG. Furthermore, the PEG composites could also maintain their original shape at a high temperature (101 °C), even when loaded with a weight of 500 g, which is almost 500 times heavier than their own weight. Besides, the PEG composites with a relatively small loading of BNNSs could also maintain a high-level of latent heat (136.8 J g−1). All these excellent comprehensive properties guarantee them a bright future in applications such as energy conversion and storage systems and electrical insulating materials for thermal management.

In this study, Zn 8 B 3 H 3 O 14 nanosheets were synthesized through a one-step coprecipitation process and employed as both a boron source and substrate templates for the fabrication of boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs), which were synthesized efficiently at low temperatures by the borate nitration method using ammonia as the nitrogen source. The thickness of the synthesized BNNSs ranged from 3 to 10 nm with a flake dimension of about 2.56 μm. The prepared BNNSs using this method realized 98.8% boron source utilization and single batch yields up to gram level. In addition, BNNSs/SiO 2 microwave-transparent composites were prepared to investigate the potential for large-scale applications of the BNNSs produced by using this method. The composites demonstrated a remarkable increase in bending strength and fracture toughness, reaching 122.02 MPa and 2.31 MPa·m 1/2 , respectively, with the addition of only 0.5 wt% BNNSs. Compared with SiO 2 without BNNSs, the fracture toughness of the composites is increased by 106%. A novel crack plugging strong toughening mechanism of BNNSs is proposed. Simultaneously, the composites exhibit exceptional microwave-transparent properties, with dielectric constants below 4 in the real part and below 0.03 in the imaginary part. Therefore, this study has successfully achieved the low-temperature and efficient synthesis of micron-scale BNNSs, laying the groundwork for their large-scale application.
