Stimuli-responsive active corrosion protection coatings serve as both an effective physical barrier and an active corrosion protection system for metallic substrates. However, their long-term performance is typically limited by the irreversible release of inhibitors and a restricted loading capacity, which hinders their repeated active corrosion protection capability and sustained durability. To address these limitations, we have developed a smart dual-stimuli-responsive active corrosion protection coating (denoted as MSNs-BTA@PANI/PVB) by encapsulating benzotriazole (BTA) within mesoporous silica nanocontainers (MSNs) coated with a polyaniline (PANI) shell. PANI, serving as a reversible molecular switch responsive to pH and redox conditions, enables controlled BTA release, ensuring sustained corrosion inhibition and prolonged service life. UV-vis spectroscopy revealed that in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution, minimal surface-adsorbed BTA was released from MSNs-BTA@PANI nanocontainer under pH change, whereas 0.54 mmol L − 1 release was triggered upon N 2 H 4 . After 50 days of immersion, EIS results showed that the coating containing 0.5 wt% MSNs-BTA@PANI achieved a |Z| 0.01Hz value of 1.14 × 10 5 Ω cm 2 , nearly seven times higher than that of the 0.5 wt% MSNs/PVB coating. This enhancement stems from the synergy between the physical barrier effect of MSNs and the dual-stimuli-triggered release of BTA, enabling effective localized corrosion inhibition. This work provides a reversible and controllable active protection strategy based on dual-responsive nanocontainers for designing durable intelligent corrosion protection coatings.

Material corrosion is a critical factor leading to structural failure, performance degradation, and significant economic losses, particularly in harsh marine environments. Therefore, enhancing the corrosion resistance of metallic materials is crucial for extending equipment service life, ensuring operational safety, and reducing maintenance costs. This work elucidates the passivation mechanism of 1,2,3-benzotriazole (BTA) on B30 cupronickel (Cu 30Ni alloy, UNS C71500) through integrated electrochemical analysis and 28-day artificial seawater immersion testing. XPS characterization revealed a multi-component passivation layer (20–30 nm thickness) comprising Cu(I)-BTA organometallic compounds, Ni(II)-BTA chelates, and crystalline Cu₂O domains. The optimized BTA treatment enhanced surface hydrophobicity, evidenced by a 20 % increase in water contact angle (85° → 102°). Electrochemical polarization demonstrated remarkable corrosion current density suppression from 18.5 μA/cm 2 (bare alloy) to 0.504 μA/cm 2 (passivated), indicating two-order-of-magnitude improvement. Long-term immersion tests at 25 °C showed 87 % reduction in corrosion rate (0.0114 → 0.0015 mm/a). The synergistic effects of organic-inorganic hybrid film formation and hydrophobicity enhancement establish BTA passivation as a viable eco-friendly alternative to chromate treatments for marine alloy protection.

Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials possess a significant specific surface area and exceptional porosity, which offer significant advantages in corrosion protection. We have created a Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanocapsule that is responsive to changes in pH. This nanocapsule is designed for providing self-healing performance to epoxy coating and corrosion protection property on Q235 carbon steel. The classical ZIF-8 was synthesized as the nanocontainer, and the relatively high loading percentage of benzotriazole (BTA) into it was endowed the coating system with outstanding resistance to corrosion and the ability to self-healing. Furthermore, A coating of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) was deposited onto the surface of BTA@ZIF-8, which would rupture under alkaline and acidic conditions, achieving controllable release of BTA and timely repair of the damaged areas of coating, prolonging the lifespan of the coating system. The successful preparation of the BTA@ZIF-8/TEOS nanocapsules was confirmed through characterization using SEM, FTIR, and XRD techniques. BTA had a loading capacity of approximately 8.5 wt%. After a 30-day soaking period, the EIS analysis revealed that the impedance modulus of the 2 wt% BTA@ZIF-8/TEOS/EP scratch coating was determined to be 7.48 × 10 3 Ω ·cm 2 , which is much greater than the epoxy coating. The non-scratch coating, comprising 2 wt% BTA@ZIF-8/TEOS nanocapsules, demonstrated an impedance modulus above 10 7 Ω ·cm 2 following 50 days of soak. The coating provides exceptional resistance to corrosion and possesses the ability to heal itself.

Low-dimensional organic–inorganic metal halides, especially lead-free perovskites, are attracting increasing attention because of their environmentally friendly processing, flexible structures, chemical stability, and promising nonlinear optical properties. Herein, we report a new stable polar 0D lead-free hybrid bismuth chloride to enable the second-harmonic generation (SHG) active material (BTA)3Bi2Cl9 (BTA = benzyltriethylammonium, C6H5CH2N(C2H5)3+) that was obtained by the antisolvent vapor diffusion method and crystallized in the polar Cc space group. Its structure features organic cations surrounded by face-sharing [Bi2Cl9]3− dimers. (BTA)3Bi2Cl9 exhibits a wide direct bandgap (3.21 eV) and a strong phase-matchable SHG conversion efficiency (1.39 × KDP). Theoretical calculation reveals that the SHG response is owing to the synergistic effect of distorted inorganic [Bi2Cl9]3− anions and polar organic BTA+ cations. This work not only enriches the family of organic–inorganic A3M2X9 (A = monovalent cations; M = trivalent metal ions; and X = halide ions) NLO crystals but also provides the possibilities for further designing novel lead-free semiconducting piezoelectric, pyroelectric and ferroelectric materials.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) provide significant benefits for loading metal corrosion inhibitors in anticorrosion on account of their high specific surface area and porous structure. Here, we present a novel BTA@Ce-ZIF-8 nanocapsule that exhibits pH-responsive behavior. Ce 3+ and Zn 2+ in the nanocapsule structure are common cathodic inhibitors, which can work in conjunction with the loaded metal corrosion inhibitor (benzotriazole) BTA to attain a triple anti-corrosion function. Q235 carbon steel is a common carbon structural steel, widely used in construction, bridges and other fields. The substrate used in this experiment is Q235 carbon steel. The incorporation of nanocapsules into the coating can impart self-repairing properties, as well as enhance its resistance to corrosion. The doping of Ce 3+ proved effective in improving the poor dispersion of ZIF-8, as evidenced by scanning electron microscope images. Furthermore, BTA@Ce-ZIF-8 nanocapsules exhibited the highest rate of corrosion inhibitor release under acidic conditions, as demonstrated by UV tests. The BTA loading capacity was approximately 6.9 wt%. After 30 days of soaking, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements revealed that the impedance modulus for the 2 wt% BTA@Ce-ZIF-8/EP scratch coating reached 5.30 × 10 3 Ω·cm 2 , significantly higher than that of the pure EP. For scratch-free coatings with 2 wt% BTA@Ce-ZIF-8 nanocapsules, the impedance modulus remained above 10 8 Ω·cm 2 after 50 days of immersion, showing remarkable self-repairing capabilities and corrosion resistance.

Making solid propellants into porous structures can significantly improve combustion speed and reduce energy density. To balance this contradiction, this work developed a novel dual mechanism additive composed of the energetic compound bis-(1(2)H-tetrazol-5-yl)-amine coordinated with a cobalt atom (BTA-Co). This additive decomposes prior to ammonium perchlorate (AP), undergoing violent swelling that results in a porous material characterized by a well-defined three-dimensional structure, loaded with nano metal oxides. This architecture aims to provides dual-mechanism enhancement effects, which include both physical gas convection provided by organic frames and chemical electron transfer provided by metal oxides. The hypothetico-deductive method was used to corroborate the additive enhancement mechanism from the morphology, composition, and enhancement laws on AP decomposition of the post-combustion products generated in different atmospheres. And direct evidence of the physical and chemical mechanisms was obtained through termination combustion method, TG-MS, and Real-time FTIR testing. The TG-DSC results demonstrated that the addition of 5 wt% BTA-Co significantly reduced the high-temperature decomposition temperature of AP by 116.6 °C and increased the heat release by 10.34-fold. Additionally, the burn rate of AP-Al-HTPB solid composite propellant with 2 wt% BTA-Co increased by 28.87 %. This study provides essential empirical data and theoretical insights for the development of new combustion additives and high-burn-rate AP-based composite solid propellants.

Dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (DMSNs) were successfully prepared with a specific surface area of 608.8 m 2 /g and an average pore size of 24.2 nm, providing a strong support for the successful loading of benzotriazole (BTA). BTA@DMSNs were prepared using the vacuum impregnation method. A pH-responsive polydopamine (PDA) outer layer was self-polymerized on the surface to obtain BTA@DMSNs/PDA microcapsules. The pH-responsive BTA@DMSNs/PDA microcapsules were prepared with the high BTA content of 20.1 wt%. Mean diameter of microcapsules was 210 ± 25 nm. The release profiles under different pH conditions confirmed the pH-responsive behavior of BTA/DMSNs@PDA microcapsules. The coatings with 1 wt% BTA@DMSNs/PDA microcapsules exhibited optimal anti-corrosion and self-healing performance. The |Z| 0.01Hz of EP/1 wt%/BTA/DMSNs@PDA remained the highest among all coatings even after being immersed in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution for 50 d through the EIS measurement. It only had a slight change from 3.8 × 10 10 Ω·cm 2 to 6.8 × 10 9 Ω·cm 2 , which was 80 times that of the EP for 50 d, indicating that the coatings had excellent long-term anti-corrosion effect and good shielding performance. Furthermore, the |Z| 0.01Hz of the artificially cross-scratched coatings that were immersed for 30 d remained at 6.9 × 10 4 Ω·cm 2 , which was one order of magnitude higher than EP (6.3 × 10 3 Ω·cm 2 ), and the surface of coatings remained intact, showing that the scratched coatings had outstanding self-healing performance.

To address the challenge of insufficient long-term protective performance in waterborne epoxy coatings (WEP) due to curing defects, this study successfully synthesized a ternary nanocomposite filler, BTA@OH-BN/PANI (BTP), through a chemical oxidation polymerization process. Hydroxylated hexagonal boron nitride (OH-BN) was employed as a functional scaffold, onto which the corrosion inhibitor benzotriazole (BTA) was loaded via a solution impregnation method. Camphorsulfonic acid-doped polyaniline (CSA-PANI) was then coated onto the surface using in situ polymerization. FT-IR, XPS, and FE-SEM characterization confirmed strong interfacial coupling between the components and the successful formation of the core-shell structure. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results revealed that the BTP filler significantly improves coating performance through a multidimensional synergistic effect, including physical shielding, active repair, and interfacial passivation. At the scratch defect site, due to the responsive release of BTA and the passivation induced by PANI, the charge transfer resistance ( R ct ) increased from an initial value of 13,200 Ω·cm 2 to 25,600 Ω·cm 2 within 24 h, demonstrating significant active impedance recovery. After a 90-day immersion in a 3.5% NaCl solution, the BTP-WEP substrate retained its bright metallic lustre. This study provides a solid theoretical and experimental foundation for the development of high-performance, synergistic active, and environmentally friendly marine anti-corrosion coatings.

The giant reduction of the barrier properties due to self-healing microcapsules and the lack of real-time protection during the healing remained the main challenges in self-healing anticorrosion coatings. Herein, a facile strategy using Janus graphene oxide (GO) as a dense and flexible shell has been proposed to synergistically solve these challenges. Benzotriazole (BTA) was used to synthesize Janus GO at the oil–water interface, and Janus GO/BTA/poly(methyl methacrylate) microcapsules were prepared. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and ultraviolet spectrophotometer analysis confirmed the formation of a Janus GO structure with one surface hydrophilic and the other hydrophobic. The surface morphology of J-GO-capsules with a high GO coverage rate was observed by scanning electron microscopy. The high biobased content coating containing J-GO-capsules showed a low-frequency impedance value above 1010 as assessed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy after being immersed in 3.5 wt % NaCl solution for 60 days. In addition, the low-frequency impedance values of the coating were maintained after being scratched due to the self-healing properties of the J-GO-capsules as well as the real-time protective effect of the BTA. Biobased coatings with the best overall properties among all of the self-healing anticorrosion coatings were prepared.

In this work, a benzotriazole (BTA)-loaded (Metal Organic Framework) MOF derived NiCo (layered double hydroxide) LDH nanocontainer (ZLB) was developed and incorporated into a polyvinyl butyral (PVB) matrix to fabricate a multifunctional coating with integrated anticorrosion and Microwave absorption capabilities. The BTA loading capacity of ZLB reached 35 wt%. The encapsulated BTA exhibited pH-responsive release behavior, with accelerated liberation under both acidic and alkaline conditions. Such release characteristics ensure inhibitor storage stability during service while enabling stimulus-triggered protection once the local environment becomes corrosive. Electrochemical measurements confirmed that the incorporation of ZLB markedly improved the protective performance of the PVB coating. The coating exhibited a corrosion current density as low as 1.29 × 10 −8 A·cm −2 and a corrosion rate of 1.501 × 10 −4 mm·year −1 at an optimal filler content of 1.8 wt%. In addition, ZLB delivered a minimum reflection loss of −30.4 dB at 7.8 GHz with a matching thickness of 2.0 mm. These results demonstrate that the integration of ZIF-8, NiCo-LDH, and BTA creates a hierarchical interfacial structure and enhances inhibitor-mediated active protection in the PVB coating. Meanwhile, the ZLB filler exhibits microwave-attenuation capability, providing a promising strategy for designing thin anticorrosion coatings containing multifunctional nanofillers.

The electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NitrRR) to ammonia offers a sustainable approach for wastewater treatment and value-added chemical synthesis. However, its practical application is hindered by sluggish kinetics and low selectivity, stemming from complex proton–electron transfer processes. Herein, we report an in situ electrochemical reconstruction strategy to construct a CuOx–BTA heterojunction catalyst, where CuOx species are controllably derived from a Cu-based metal–organic framework (Cu–BTA) precursor. The engineered interface induces strong interfacial charge transfer from CuOx to BTA, promoting electron localization on Cu active sites and optimizing the adsorption energy of key intermediates. These structural and electronic features establish a dual-functional synergy: Cu0 sites catalyze the critical conversion of NO3− to NO2−, while Cu+ sites facilitate the subsequent reduction of NO2− to NH3. Meanwhile, the BTA ligand enhances NO3− activation and water dissociation, providing abundant *H intermediates for NH3 formation. Benefiting from this cooperative mechanism, the catalyst achieves a remarkable NH3 faradaic efficiency of 99.2% at −0.68 V vs. RHE and maintains stable performance for over 100 hours, significantly outperforming individual components (Cu–BTA, CuNPs and Cu2O). This study demonstrates the potential of electrochemical reconstruction-driven interface engineering for the rational design of high-performance cascade NitrRR catalysts.
