Photocatalytic membrane technology is a promising technology for advanced water treatment. However, as a simple, fast, and stable spin coating method for photocatalytic membrane preparation, the spin coating solution often used in spin coating can cause the pore plugging on the membrane surface and encapsulates photocatalysts, which seriously affects the flux of the membrane and the exposure of the photocatalytic active site. Here, this work adopted a homogenization spin coating strategy, using polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) solution as the spin coating solution to prepare the highly exposed imprinted bismuth titanate porous photocatalytic membrane (IM-BTOM). Due to the same composition of PVDF solution as the PVDF substrate membrane, IM-BTOM basically retained the good porous structure of the membrane. The homogenization spin coating strategy not only endowed IM-BTOM with high flux (4545.45 L m -2 h −1 bar −1 ), but also prevented the encapsulation of IM-BTO powder materials, fully exposing the photocatalytic active sites, thereby obtaining better photocatalytic ability and selectivity. The degradation rate of tetracycline with IM-BTOM was nearly three times that with the conventional cellulose acetate spin coating membrane. Meanwhile, the existence of imprinting cavities also endowed IM-BTOM with high selectivity for the target pollutant, with a selectivity coefficient of up to 2.66. This work provides a new idea for preparing high-efficient photocatalytic membrane by spin coating.

Flexible ferroelectric capacitors with high energy density and storage efficiency are highly desirable in the next generation of flexible electronic devices. To develop high-performance ferroelectric capacitors, a conventional approach is chemical modification. Here, a novel approach of interlayer coupling is proposed to achieve high energy storage performance in BiMg0.5Ti0.5O3-BaTiO3/BiMg0.5Ti0.5O3 (BMT-BTO/BMT)N multilayer ferroelectric films fabricated on flexible mica substrates via a sol–gel coating method. The interlayer electrostatic coupling between the ferroelectric BMT and relaxor ferroelectric BMT-BTO layers leads to small remnant polarization and large breakdown field strength, resulting in an outstanding energy storage density of ∼106.8 J cm–3 and a good efficiency of ∼75.6% in the multilayer thin films. Further, the energy storage performance remains stable in a wide range of temperatures (25–200 °C) and frequencies (500 Hz to 10 kHz) after 108 electrical loading cycles. The energy storage performance also has no obvious deterioration when the multilayer film experiences 104 mechanical bending cycles with a bending radius of 4 mm. The approach proposed in the present work should be generally implementable in other multilayer flexible ferroelectric capacitors and offers a novel avenue to enhance energy storage performance by tuning the interlayer coupling.

It is of great significance to develop piezoelectric composites with mechanical flexibility and high electromechanical coupling characteristics for the collection and conversion of mechanical energy. In this work, a barium titanate (BTO) based piezoelectric composite was prepared by hydrothermal synthesis and high-temperature carbonization with the assistance of cellulose nanofibers (CNF), graphene oxide (GO) and carboxylated carbon nanotubes (C-CNT). C-CNT, GO and CNF can provide growth sites for BTO, but compared with C-CNT, CNF and GO have stronger interaction with BTO, which can improve the compatibility between BTO and CNF/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) matrix. The tensile strength of the composite membrane prepared by GO-CNF-BTO treated at 1100 °C can reach 23.36 ± 8.30 MPa. After further hot pressing and polarization treatment, its longitudinal piezoelectric coefficient (d 33 ) reaches 9.8 ± 2.6 pC·N −1 . Correspondingly, the open-circuit voltage (V OC ) and short-circuit current (I SC ) increases to 11.64 V and 824 nA, respectively. In addition, the assembled piezoelectric generator (PEG) can charge for small commercial capacitors, as well as light small bulbs and electronic screens. It also has good piezoelectric output stability and sensing performance, which can effectively convert the mechanical energy from human motion into electrical energy. This work provides a reference for the performance improvement of flexible piezoelectric devices.

The widespread occurrence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in water has posed severe risks to human health and the ecosystem. In this study, Co 3 O 4 @BTO was synthesized and employed as a particular electrode in a three-dimensional (3D) electro-activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) process. The proposed system showed an obvious synergistic effect in ARGs elimination with lower energy consumption in comparison to the individual application of PMS, Co 3 O 4 @BTO or the electrochemical process. Approximately a 4.1-log reduction in ARGs can be achieved under the optimal operation conditions of 0.1 g/L Co 3 O 4 @BTO, 0.3 mM PMS and a current density of 9 mA/cm 2 . Due to the electrochemical activation and heterogeneous catalysis of Co 3 O 4 @BTO, the enhanced PMS activation efficiency was responsible for the effective elimination of ARGs. Based on quenching tests and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis, the superoxide radical (· O 2 − ) played the dominant role in the elimination of ARGs, while other reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as S O 4 · − , · OH , and 1 O 2 were also involved. The system demonstrated a good practical application potential in ARG-contaminated water, providing an alternative approach for the control of ARGs dissemination.

Nerve injury can lead to defects in related motor functions. It is critical to achieve long-term and convenient real-time evaluation of motor function recovery status during nerve injury repair. In this study, an implantable PLLA/BTO piezoelectric sensor (PBPS) with good biodegradability and biocompatibility for real time evaluation of the motor function recovery after nerve injury is developed. PLLA fibers doped with BTO are employed as piezoelectric material in PBPS, which can convert the biomechanical signals generated by motion into electrical signals. PBPS can be implant simultaneously with commonly used tissue scaffolds for treatment in the rats with sciatic nerve injury. The linearity of the pressure and the output voltage of PBPS is ≈0.9445. For the evaluation effectiveness, as the treatment process progresses, the signals generated by PBPS exhibited good consistency with EMG signals, indicating effectively evaluation of the motor function. Moreover, the integration of PBPS and wireless module can break the limitations of time and space for sensing and realize wireless evaluation of motor function in rat. The implantable sensor based on PBPS may bring new ideas for the development of implantable bioelectronics.

Piezoelectric catalysis has emerged as a sustainable technology for pollutant degradation, with barium titanate (BTO) serving as a prominent lead-free piezoelectric material. However, its practical application remains constrained by limited degradation efficiency. To address these challenges, polyaniline-incorporated BTO nanocomposites (BTO@PANI) were synthesized via in-situ polymerization to enhance piezoelectric polarization and catalytic performance. The composites were evaluated for degrading dyes and pharmaceuticals under both ultrasonic and aeration-driven conditions, with systematic investigation of influencing factors including pH, catalyst dosage, aeration rate, and bubble size. The optimized BTO@PANI 0.2 composite exhibited exceptional catalytic activity, achieving a 57 % enhancement in degradation efficiency and a reaction rate constant (k = 0.0218 min⁻¹) 15.7 times greater than pure BTO under ultrasonic excitation. The aeration-driven process used only 23.3 % of the energy that ultrasonication did, which is very impressive. The composite maintained excellent stability through four consecutive degradation cycles under both excitation modes. The catalytic mechanism was systematically investigated through radical trapping experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis, and comprehensive material characterization (XRD, SEM, FTIR, XPS, EIS). This work provides new idea for designing efficient piezoelectric catalysts and demonstrates a promising energy-saving strategy for advanced oxidation processes in water treatment.

An efficient and stable photoanode is crucial for solar-driven photoelectrochemical desalination (SD-PED), especially for complex industrial brines. Here, a ZnO/Bi4Ti3O12 (BTO) heterojunction photoanode with simultaneously introduced Bi and O vacancies (Biv/Ov) was fabricated through a sol–gel route followed by calcination. Using real high-salinity wastewater from the coal-chemical industry as the feed, this optimized photoanode delivered a photocurrent density of 4.65 mA cm−2, and a salt removal rate of 148.52 µg (cm2 min)−1 under simulated solar illumination at zero external bias, representing a 65.94% improvement over pristine BTO. The SD-PED device effectively reduced the total salinity from 6912 ppm to 966 ppm, achieving >90% removal of Na+/Cl− and >87.6% removal of co-existing ions, while maintaining stable operation over five cycles. The enhanced performance is attributed to the synergistic effect of the porous layered structure and the vacancy-rich heterointerface, which together enlarge the electrode/electrolyte active area and establish a built-in electric field that promotes charge separation and transport. This work provides a defect-engineering strategy for developing robust photoanodes for low-bias solar desalination of high-salinity industrial wastewater.

The discharge of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs)-containing wastewater has caused severe water pollution problems. Herein, an aeration-driven piezoelectric peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation process using oxygen-vacancy engineered BaTiO 3 (BTO-Ov) is applied for the PPCPs removal from water. About 95 % of amoxicillin (AM) can be removed within 30 min in the presence of aeration and PMS. Compared to other PMS based advanced oxidation processes, the aeration-driven piezoelectric PMS activation process using BTO-Ov exhibits dual superiority in catalytic performance and energy saving capability. During the process, the sufficient dissolved oxygen (DO) originated from the aeration can not only work as the precursor for the reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation, but also the enhancer for the PMS activation. The activation energy of PMS is 26.9 kJ/mol in the proposed system, much lower than most previously reported studies. Moreover, the involvement of ROS in the AM degradation is able to be also regulated by the DO content in solution, achieving better mineralization efficiency of AM. The system also demonstrates good reusability and application potential on the removal of other PPCPs from water. This work offers an excellent method for the wastewater treatment and in-depth mechanism understanding on the aeration-driven piezoelectric PMS activation process.

The all-textile piezoelectric sensor,
capable of achieving
high-sensitivity
pressure sensing while meeting the requirements of wearability, comfort,
and structural flexibility, holds great significance for intelligent
wearable motion monitoring. In this study, MXene was employed to induce
the transition of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) molecular chains from a
3 1 helical conformation to a planar zigzag conformation,
which significantly enhanced the piezoelectric output performance.
Under an impulse force of 7 N at 1 Hz, the sensor exhibited an output
voltage of 34.1 V, with a sensitivity of 1.51 V/N over the range of
1–9 N. The silver-based knitted fabric electrode (silver-knitted
fabric) was knitted on a computerized flat-knitting machine, fully
leveraging the advantages of the knitted electrode, including high
conductivity (resistance of only 4.2 Ω), high air permeability
(1235 mm/s), and excellent structural flexibility. The electrospun
MXene/PAN/K-BTO composite nanofiber membrane was subsequently integrated
with the silver-based knitted fabric electrode to construct an all-textile
flexible piezoelectric sensor with a three-layer sandwich structure.
After 2000 consecutive impact cycles, the sensor output signal remained
stable without any attenuation. The sensor accurately identified various
human motion patterns, including finger bending (approximately 0.08
V), elbow flexion and extension, and walking gait (approximately 18.1
V). Owing to its excellent skin adherence and high sensitivity to
subtle movements, this sensor provides an effective monitoring tool
for intensive care and consciousness recovery assessment. Furthermore,
it holds promising potential for applications in sports health monitoring
and human–computer interaction, offering solutions for next-generation
embodied intelligence and personalized health monitoring systems.

As an ideal flexible polymer piezoelectric material, PVDF material has a broad application prospect in pressure sensing, health monitoring, and so forth. However, traditional PVDF-based sensors usually suffer from problems such as low open-circuit voltage and slow deformation recovery. In this paper, inspired by the beaded structure of soybean rhizobial fungus, we used the strategy of combining electrostatic spinning and hot-pressing technology to construct a BTO/PVDF piezoelectric film. Specifically, PVDF is used as the substrate and doped with BTO particles to prepare a beaded internal structure. Then, hot pressing was performed to enhance the β-crystalline phase ratio of PVDF to increase the piezoelectric performance of the device. The sensors prepared by this method possess a high sensitivity of 25.23 mV/kPa in the 0–5 kPa range. The fast response time is 86 ms, and the recovery time is 57 ms, maintaining high cycling stability above 92% under loading and unloading for more than 10,000 cycles. Finite element numerical simulation analysis confirms that the BTO/PVDF piezoelectric thin films prepared by this process have excellent sensing performance. Integrating the device with a data acquisition and processing module can easily detect various life activities of the human body, which has great potential in flexible electronic skin, motion acquisition, and so on.

Physicochemical properties of biomaterials play a regulatory role in osteoblast proliferation and differentiation. Inspired by the electrical properties of natural bone, the electroactive composites applied to osteogenesis have gradually become the hotspot of research. In this work, an electroactive biocomposite of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) mixed with gadolinium-doped barium titanate nanoparticles (Gd-BTO NPs) was investigated to establish the structure–activity relationship between electrical property, especially surface potential, and osteogenic activity. Furthermore, the potential mechanism was also explored. The results showed that the introduction of Gd-BTO NPs was more conducive to improve the elastic modulus and beneficial to utilize MRI and X-ray dual imaging. The electrical characteristics of composites indicate that the introduction of Gd-BTO NPs can effectively improve the electrical properties of materials including dielectricity, piezoelectricity, and surface potential. Moreover, adjusting the amount of gadolinium doping could optimize electrical activity and enhance MRI compatibility. The surface potential of 0.2Gd-BTO/PLGA could reach −58.2 to −60.9 mV at pH values from 7 to 9. Functional studies on cells revealed that the negative surface potential of poled Gd-BTO/PLGA enhanced cell attachment and osteogenic differentiation significantly. Furthermore, the negative surface potential could induce intracellular Ca2+ ion concentration oscillation and improve osteogenic differentiation via the calcineurin/NFAT signal pathway. These findings suggest that electroactive Gd-BTO/PLGA nanocomposites may have huge potential for bone regeneration and be expected to have wide applications in the field of bone tissue engineering.

Infection of bone defects remains a challenging issue in clinical practice, resulting in various complications. The current clinical treatments include antibiotic therapy and surgical debridement, which can cause drug-resistance and potential postoperative complications. Therefore, there is an urgent need for an efficient treatment to sterilize and promote bone repair in situ . In this work, an ultrasound responsive selenium modified barium titanate nanoparticle (Se@BTO NP) was fabricated, which exhibited significant antibacterial and bone regeneration effects. Selenium nanoparticle (Se NP) was modified on the surface of barium titanate nanoparticle (BTO NP) to form heterostructure, which facilitated the second distribution of piezo-induced carriers under ultrasound (US) irradiation and improved the separation of electron-hole pairs. The Se@BTO NPs exhibited remarkable antibacterial efficiency with an antibacterial rate of 99.23% against Staphylococcus aureus ( S.aureus ) and significantly promoted the osteogenic differentiation under ultrasound irradiation. The in vivo experiments exhibited that Se@BTO NPs successfully repaired the femoral condylar bone defects of rats infected by S.aureus , resulting in significant promotion of bone regeneration. Overall, this work provided an innovative strategy for the utilization of US responsive nanomaterials in efficient bacteria elimination and bone regeneration. Statement of Significance Infectious bone defects remain a challenging issue in clinical practice. Current antibiotic therapy and surgical debridement has numerous limitations such as drug-resistance and potential complications.
