Successful synthesis of Bi 3 O 4 Br/Bi 2 WO 6 type-II heterojunction photocatalyst. • Stability and CO₂ reduction activity of the as-prepared materials. • Bi 3 O 4 Br/Bi 2 WO 6 –20 exhibits best performance, achieving CO production rate of 13.73 μmol·g −1 h −1 . • Demonstration of closed junctional contact and synergistic effect of type-II heterojunction. The development of efficient, stable, and highly selective catalysts is of great importance for the photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 . However, the inefficient separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carriers remain a major challenge for Bi-based photocatalysts. In this work, Bi 3 O 4 Br/Bi 2 WO 6 type-II heterojunction photocatalyst via a two-step approach, and its photocatalytic CO 2 reduction performance was systematically investigated. The results shin that Bi 3 O 4 Br/Bi 2 WO 6 –20 exhibits best performance, achieving CO production rate of 13.73 μmol·g −1 h −1 and is approximately 2.09-fold compared with pure Bi 3 O 4 Br and 2.05 -fold compared with pure Bi 2 WO 6 , while maintaining nearly 100% CO selectivity. Based on the experimentally determined band structures and complementary spectroscopic and photoelectrochemical results, a possible type-II charge-transfer pathway is proposed to account for the enhanced CO 2 photoreduction performance. In addition, composite demonstrates excellent stability during photocatalytic process. This study provides an effective strategy for facile construction of efficient CO 2 reduction photocatalysts. Given the limitations of conventional advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), a coupling system by integrating sulfate radical-based AOPs ( SO 4 - -AOPs) with photocatalysis for boosting the peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation under visible light was established. Herein, we developed a novel 5 %Bi 3 O 4 Br/CuBi 2 O 4 catalyst for rapid and efficient degradation of tetracycline (TC). The rate constant (k) for degrading TC in 5 %Bi 3 O 4 Br/CuBi 2 O 4 + PMS + Vis system was 3.69 min −1 , which is 30.62, 2.18 times higher than that of photocatalysis and SO 4 - -AOPs alone, respectively. The quenching experiments verified that h + , OH, O 2 – and 1 O 2 were dominant contributors for the degradation of TC. EPR and quantitative analysis further implied illumination was favor in achieving mass production of OH and 1 O 2 . Moreover, O 2 – and SO 4 - might convert into 1 O 2 in the 5 %Bi 3 O 4 Br/CuBi 2 O 4 + PMS + Vis system. The degradation pathways of TC were proposed and the toxicity of intermediates was much lower than that of untreated TC. Besides, the 5 %Bi 3 O 4 Br/CuBi 2 O 4 + PMS + Vis system showed over 90% removal rate in a wide pH range (3–11) or different concentrations of inorganic anions. This work provided a worthy reference in developing an environmentally-friendly system for the high-efficiency degradation of antibiotics.

The present work demonstrates the synthesis of the microsphere composite photocatalyst Bi 3 O 4 Br/NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) (BOB/NMILT) system, and the physicochemical properties of the material were analyzed by various characterization means. Further, the photocatalytic performance of the BOB/NMILT system was evaluated by degrading tetracycline (TC) under simulated sunlight. The degradation rate of TC using BOB/NMILT-5 reached 88.5% within 90 min. The degradation rate is 6.5 times and 3 times higher than that of individual catalysts NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) (NMILT) and Bi 3 O 4 Br, respectively. The improvement in photocatalytic activity of composites mainly benefited from the construction of heterojunctions , which effectively inhibited the recombination of carriers. Importantly, the role of h + and •O 2 − was found to be significant in the reaction of TC. Cumulatively, a Z-scheme photocatalytic degradation mechanism of tetracycline on the BOB/NMILT composite system was proposed. The proposal of this system is of great significance for the future development of photocatalytic materials that can degrade tetracycline.

Solar-driven activation of molecular oxygen (O 2 ) offers an appealing strategy to realize aerobic oxidation catalysis at room temperature, while the efficiency of photocatalytic O 2 activation is severely limited by lacking O 2 adsorption sites and poor carrier utilization. Herein, an efficient Ni 2 P/Bi 3 O 4 Br-OVs heterojunction is firstly proposed to overcome the limitation by the dual-site design of oxygen vacancies (OVs) and on Ni 2 P cocatalyst. By the joint observations from spectroscopic measurements and theoretical simulations, the introduction of OVs and Ni 2 P on Bi 3 O 4 Br nanosheets can not only optimize the light absorption, facilitate the separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carrier through the S-scheme mechanism, but also provide active sites for effective adsorption and activation of oxygen molecules, thereby contributing to highly efficient generation of •O 2 − radicals. Benefiting from the more oxidative active species of •O 2 − and h + , the Ni 2 P/Bi 3 O 4 Br-OVs photocatalyst achieves near-unity conversion rate and selectivity in aerobic oxidation of sulfide to sulfoxide, and it also exhibits outstanding photoactivity in the aerobic degradation of phenolic pollutants under visible light. This study showcases a feasible O 2 activation approach by defect and heterojunction engineering, and provides a new perspective for designing high-performance photocatalysts in the field of aerobic oxidation catalysis.

Synthesis of three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical hollow spheres with exposed {0 0 1} active facets are of huge significance in the field of semiconductor photocatalysis. Herein, we demonstrate a facile ionic liquid-in-water (IL/W) microemulsion approach for the fabrication of Bi-rich Bi 3 O 4 Br hierarchical hollow spheres assembled with {0 0 1}-facets exposed nanosheets. The size and {0 0 1}-facets exposure ratio of Bi 3 O 4 Br hierarchical hollow spheres can be fine-tuned by adjusting the concentration of surfactant TX-100. A possible formation mechanism of Bi 3 O 4 Br hierarchical hollow spheres assembled with {0 0 1}-facets exposed nanosheets by microemulsion template and dissolution-recrystallization was proposed based on SEM and XRD results. The actual photocatalytic activity was extensively investigated by degrading multiform phenol derivatives with different substituents and substitution positions, including acetaminophen (APAP), 4- tert -butylphenol (PTBP), o-nitrophenol (ONP), methylparaben (MPB). The Bi 3 O 4 Br hierarchical hollow spheres assembled with {0 0 1}-facets exposed nanosheets not only exhibit significantly promoted visible-light photocatalytic activity, but also have robust and nonselective photooxidation ability. The photocurrent and impedance results indicated that significantly strengthened charge separation and transfer efficiency that derived from the advantages of Bi 3 O 4 Br {0 0 1} active facets and hollow structures were responsible for the high photo-activity. The study may provide some new hints on designing and developing novel 3D hierarchical hollow structures with exposing {0 0 1} active facets for heterogeneous photocatalysis.

With the advancement of economy, the polluted water from industry is increasing day by day, which inevitably causes great harm to the environment. Photocatalytic technology based on solar energy is considered as one of the effective ways to treat organic pollutants in water because of its advantages of green, high efficiency and environment-friendly. A range of Zn 0.6 Cd 0.4 S/Bi 3 O 4 Br composites were synthesized via in-situ growth method. A comprehensive characterization of the morphology, crystal structure and photoelectronic properties was carried out using multiple techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), photoluminescence (PL), Ultraviolet-Visible Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET). The data from photocatalytic experiments showed that the composite had superior performance than the monomers, the degradation efficiency of methylene blue (MB), rhodamine B (RhB) and tetracycline (TC) reached 97.92 % (80 min), 98.55 % (70 min) and 97.61 % (40 min) respectively. Various water sources (pure water, tap water, lake water and seawater) and different pH conditions were taken into account during the experiments. The results showed that Zn 0.6 Cd 0.4 S/Bi 3 O 4 Br-35 % maintained comparable photocatalytic performance for both dyes and antibiotic in all solutions with different resources of water, indicating its remarkable adaptability across diverse water matrices. The most favored pH condition was neutral (pH = 7). It was confirmed by the radical trapping experiment that holes (h + ) and superoxide radicals (•O 2 - ) were vital to the photocatalytic process. The data from density functional theory (DFT) calculation confirmed that the electron transfer followed an S-scheme mechanism. The formation of S-type heterojunction separated the photogenerated electron-hole pairs effectively, and the Zn 0.6 Cd 0.4 S/Bi 3 O 4 Br-35 % exhibited tremendous potential for future implementations in photocatalytic degradation for organic pollutants.

As a green alternative to the Haber-Bosch process, photocatalytic nitrogen fixation is currently hindered by three persistent challenges, namely rapid carrier recombination, the high activation energy of the N N bond, and weak N 2 adsorption affinity, which collectively impede its practical application. Herein, an oxygen vacancy (OV)-rich Bi 3 O 4 Br/Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 (BOBC) S-scheme heterojunction is rationally constructed via a facile one-pot in situ synthetic strategy. The formation of the S-scheme heterojunction induces directional charge transfer across the Bi 3 O 4 Br/Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 interface, effectively suppressing charge recombination while preserving the strong reduction potential of Bi 3 O 4 Br. Simultaneously, the introduced oxygen vacancies (OVs) act as dual-role regulators by enhancing N 2 adsorption through increased surface electron density and coordinatively unsaturated active sites, as well as facilitating electron injection into adsorbed N 2 via defect-induced electronic structure modulation, thereby synergistically destabilizing the N N bond and promoting its activation. Furthermore, the presence of OVs significantly improves light-harvesting capability of the heterojunction. Owing to these integrated merits, the optimized 15-BOBC-OVs catalyst exhibits a remarkable photocatalytic nitrogen fixation rate of 151.3 μmol g −1 h −1 in pure water, corresponding to a 12.0-fold enhancement compared with pristine Bi 3 O 4 Br. In situ FT-IR analysis provides direct evidence for an associative distal reaction mechanism during nitrogen reduction reaction. This work demonstrates a concise and effective strategy for the rational design Bi-rich bismuth oxyhalide photocatalysts for high-performance nitrogen fixation by coupling S-scheme heterojunction construction with oxygen vacancy engineering.
