In this work, the photocatalyst BiOCOOH/BiYO 3 /Chitosan (CS) was prepared by using CS as the carrier and adsorbent. The performance of the material was studied through the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC) in water. Theoretical calculations and experiments demonstrate that the formation of BiOCOOH/BiYO 3 heterojunctions improves the separation of photogenerated carriers and the absorption of visible light by the material. The introduction of CS improves the difficulties in material recovery, demonstrating exceptional degradation ability for TC under the action of adsorption and photocatalysis. Adsorption kinetics studies indicate that the adsorption of TC by BiOCOOH/BiYO 3 /CS fits the pseudo-second-order model better, while the adsorption at different concentrations of TC is more suitably described by the Freundlich isotherm model. The synthesis of BiOCOOH/BiYO 3 /CS was confirmed by the analysis of XRD, XPS, and FTIR. UV–vis DRS showed that the synthesis of BiOCOOH/BiYO 3 /CS broadened the range of light absorbed by the material. The testing results of PL and transient photocurrent density indicate that BiOCOOH/BiYO 3 exhibits a higher efficiency in separating photogenerated charge carriers. After 5 cycles of reuse, the degradation efficiency can still reach 90 % of the initial efficiency, indicating that CS-based photocatalytic composite catalysts have practical application potential in the field of water pollution treatment.

Herein, flower-like Bi 2 WO 6 /BiOCOOH heterojunction photocatalysts were synthesized by one-pot method. Morphological characterizations had demonstrated that the Bi 2 WO 6 nanoparticles were tightly anchored on the surface of BiOCOOH, which indicated that the successful synthesis of the Bi 2 WO 6 -BiOCOOH photocatalysts. Compared with pure BiOCOOH and Bi 2 WO 6 , the Bi 2 WO 6 /BiOCOOH photocatalysts had exhibited a red shift in absorption edge and enhanced visible light absorption. EIS, PL and photocurrent response results suggested that the form of the Bi 2 WO 6 -BiOCOOH heterojunction facilitated the separation of photogenerated electron and hole pairs. Furthermore, the photoactivity of Bi 2 WO 6 /BiOCOOH were evaluated by the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) under the simulated sunlight irradiation. The results manifested that the W/Bi-2 photocatalyst exhibited the best photocatalytic activity, which TC was degraded by 88 % within 75 min and CIP was degraded by 90 % within 90 min. The improvement of photocatalytic activity was mainly attributed to the decrease in the composite rate of photo-induced electron-hole pairs. Radical trapping experiments and EPR results indicated that holes (h + ) and superoxide radicals ( · O 2 – ) were dominant during the degradation of TC. The possible photocatalytic mechanism was discussed based on the band structures of BiOCOOH and Bi 2 WO 6 .

The simultaneous removal of organic dyes and heavy metal ions from complex wastewater remains a formidable challenge due to the competitive redox requirements of different pollutants. In this work, we report a robust in-situ phase transformation strategy to construct a temperature-mediated S-scheme Bi 2 WO 6 /Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 heterojunction. By precisely modulating the hydrothermal temperature, the BiOCOOH phase was strategically transformed into Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 on the Bi 2 WO 6 surface, establishing an intimate interfacial contact. The resulting heterojunction induces a potent internal electric field (IEF), which dictates a high-efficiency S-scheme charge transfer pathway. This mechanism not only maximizes the spatial separation of photogenerated carriers but also preserves the powerful redox potentials of the individual components. Under visible light irradiation, the optimized BCW-2 catalyst exhibited exceptional performance, achieving near-complete removal of Rhodamine B (RhB) and Cr(VI) within 90 min, with reaction rate constants of 0.08911 min −1 and 0.06157 min −1 , respectively. Detailed experimental characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations provided deep mechanistic insights into the band alignment and interfacial electronic behavior, confirming the S-scheme pathway. This study offers a transformative paradigm for the rational design of S-scheme heterojunctions with tailored redox capabilities for advanced environmental remediation.

In-situ construction of a Type-I Bi 2 MoO 6 /Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 heterojunction via temperature-mediated topotactic transformation. • Optimized BCM-2 achieved near-complete synergistic removal of RhB and Cr(VI) within 90 min, outperforming individual components. • Unveiled an anomalous charge-transfer mechanism circumventing intrinsic limitations of conventional Type-I heterojunctions. The simultaneous elimination of recalcitrant organic pollutants and toxic heavy metals from industrial effluents demands photocatalytic platforms with synergistic redox capabilities. Herein, we report a topotactic phase-transformation strategy that exploits BiOCOOH nanosheets as a sacrificial topographic template to construct an atomically coherent Bi 2 MoO 6 /Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 (BCM) heterojunction through precision hydrothermal temperature modulation (160 °C). Unlike conventional exogenous deposition routes that generate mechanically contacted, defect-laden interfaces, the thermally driven in-situ nucleation of Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 from the [Bi 2 O 2 ] 2+ structural units of BiOCOOH promoted by DMF-derived carbonate species, ensures lattice-commensurate phase boundaries with negligible interfacial defects, as confirmed by HRTEM-resolved interplanar spacings of 0.196 nm and 0.338 nm across a continuous interface. Despite a nominal Type-I (straddling-gap) band alignment, the BCM-2 composite harbors a pronounced internal electric field (IEF) established by spontaneous interfacial charge redistribution (from Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 to Bi 2 MoO 6 ), supported by XPS binding energy shifts (Bi 4f: +0.2 eV; Mo 3d: −0.1 eV). This IEF induces asymmetric band bending that deviates from conventional Type-I carrier co-localization, spatially directing photogenerated electrons to the strong-reduction-potential conduction band of Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 (−0.61 eV vs. NHE) and holes to the oxidizing valence band of Bi 2 MoO 6 (1.80 eV vs. NHE), a charge-transfer topology mechanistically analogous to the step-scheme (S-scheme) mechanism. Radical trapping and ESR experiments confirm ⋅ O 2 − and h + as the dominant reactive species, fully consistent with this carrier-separation model. The synergy of electrostatic Cr(VI) pre-concentration on the positively charged Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 surface and IEF-mediated efficient carrier separation delivers 100% degradation of Rhodamine B (20 mg/L) and 93.19% reduction of Cr(VI) (30 mg/L) within 60 min under visible-light irradiation (λ > 420 nm, 300 mW cm −2 ), far surpassing the physically mixed counterpart. Exceptional recyclability over four cycles with negligible activity loss further underscores the structural robustness of the topotactic interface. This work demonstrates the potential of topotactic phase transformation as a strategy for controlling heterojunction interfaces through local structural inheritance and promoting S-scheme-like charge-transfer behavior for photocatalytic environmental remediation. The low separation rate of electron–hole pairs in single-component photocatalysts severely limits their applications for wastewater treatment. For this study, SnO2/BiOCOOH photocatalysts in flower-like microspheres were controllably synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method and were characterized by various advanced techniques. These SnO2/BiOCOOH nanocomposites demonstrated excellent photocatalytic activities for the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB), titan yellow, and levofloxacin hydrochloride (LVF). Specifically, 98.5% of RhB, 80% of titan yellow, and 85% of LVF were degraded under 5 W LED (λ = 365 nm) light irradiation within 30, 40, and 60 min, respectively. Radical trapping experiments and electron spin resonance results indicated that h+ was the dominant active radical, whereas ·O2– and ·OH played an auxiliary role in the photocatalytic system. Subsequently, a potential photocatalytic mechanism was proposed based on the experimental results.

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) continues to attract researchers in the field of membrane separation due to its many outstanding properties. However, fully modifying it into a multifunctional composite membrane with ultra-high stability remains a significant challenge. In this work, a uniform BiOBr-BiOCOOH/PVDF composite membrane was prepared by incorporating catalytic materials into the casting solution through an in-situ deposition method. The effects of different loadings of catalytic materials on the performance of the p-n heterojunction catalyst were investigated. The composite membrane surface was modified by self-assembling tannic acid (TA) and subsequent crosslinking, and its oil-water separation performance and resistance to acidic and alkaline conditions were evaluated. Using dyes, antibiotics, and oily wastewater as representative pollutants, the membrane’s rejection and catalytic capabilities were thoroughly analyzed, achieving average rejection rates of 95%, 86%, and 99%, respectively. The changes in the crystalline phases of PVDF molecules, the physical morphology, and the chemical structure of the composite membranes were thoroughly discussed. Catalytic studies demonstrated that the catalytic materials within the composite membrane possess highly efficient light absorption capabilities, achieving photodegradation rates of over 99% for various pollutants and over 98% for complex wastewater containing mixed dyes. The surface modification via self-assembly endowed the membrane with hydrophilic and oleophobic properties, resulting in high rejection efficiency for oil-in-water emulsions and excellent performance in separating oilfield industrial wastewater, along with strong self-cleaning ability. The study also highlights the composite membrane's adaptability in extremely acidic and alkaline environments, demonstrating its outstanding physicochemical structural stability.

Photocatalytic nitrogen fixation is considered as a multielectron reaction and a complex kinetic process, building high-performance nitrogen fixation photocatalysts to solve the activation of N2 and inhibit the recombination of photogenerated holes and electrons under the visible light condition. Herein, porous β-Bi2O3/BiOCOOH heterojunction photocatalysts with oxygen vacancies were prepared via BiOCOOH as a sacrificial precursor by the calcination method. The as-obtained β-Bi2O3/BiOCOOH catalyst with oxygen vacancies exhibited a high catalytic activity of about 65.56 μmol·g–1·h–1 for N2 fixation via deionized water as a solvent and methanol as a sacrificial agent. Both experimental and theoretical research indicated that the activity of β-Bi2O3/BiOCOOH heterojunction catalysts originated from the oxygen vacancies and lattice oxygen species. Compared to the single-component BiOCOOH structure, the porous β-Bi2O3/BiOCOOH heterojunction catalysts have achieved the absorption visible light range and have promoted the separation efficiency of charge carrier pairs by accommodating photogenerated electrons. Our findings afford a chance to improve a promising catalyst for photocatalytic nitrogen fixation.

Papermaking wastewater has large output and high chemical oxygen demand (COD), which seriously affects the water environment. As a by-product of papermaking industry, lignin is the main contaminant that causes excessive COD value. Bismuth oxide is a potential catalyst for photocatalytic degradation of lignin-contained wastewater because of its high charge conduction performance and light corrosion resistance . However, the high electron-hole recombination rate and poor surface chemical state of pure Bi 2 O 3 seriously hinder the degradation efficiency. Herein, we designed an O V -Bi 2 O 3 /BiOCOOH heterojunction with oxygen vacancies and heterojunction coexisting for photocatalytic degradation of lignin. Temperature induced the oxidation of ethylene glycol into formic acid , resulting in the epitaxial growth of Bi 2 O 3 and forming a Bi 2 O 3 /BiOCOOH heterojunction. The heterojunction presents a tight interface by sharing the Bi-O tetrahedron, and provides a highway for the charge transfer. Meanwhile, the oxidation of ethylene glycol induces oxygen vacancies (O V s) on Bi 2 O 3 /BiOCOOH surface, forming charge trapping centers to promote electron transport and surface reactions. The degradation efficiency of O V -Bi 2 O 3 /BiOCOOH is approximately 3 and 16 times that of Bi 2 O 3 and BiOCOOH, respectively. The improvement of photocatalytic performance can be attributed to the synergy of heterojunction and oxygen vacancy, and the stability is attributed to covalent bonds tightly connected.
