BiOX (X = Cl, Br, I)/WO3/Polyacrylonitrile Nanofibrous Membranes for Diagnostic X-Ray Shielding and Visible-Light Photocatalysis

Dayong He,Chao Wang,Rui Zhao,Xiaofeng Lu,Mei Yang,Ju Qiu,Kaizhong Wang,Ce Wang

Facing high-energy radiation exposure in many different situations, researchers are focused on developing personal protective equipment against high-energy rays. The design and fabrication of low-density, self-standing, nontoxic, and flexible high-energy ray shielding materials have always been a hot issue in the special equipment manufacturing industry. As key raw materials for high-efficiency X-ray shielding, high-Z element compounds are nonrenewable resources. Therefore, their development and application require far-sighted arrangement. In this work, we demonstrate an easy and general fabrication route of multifunctional high-Z element compounds/polymer nanofibrous membranes through electrospinning and subsequent solvothermal and successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction processes. The as-fabricated BiOX (X = Cl, Br, I)/WO3/PAN nanofibrous membrane exhibits an excellent X-ray shielding capability with a mass attenuation coefficient of 3.55 cm2 g–1 at 83 keV and could achieve a balanced shielding performance by the introduction of inexpensive iodine elements. Additionally, the self-standing hybrid nanofibrous membrane also exhibits remarkable visible-light photocatalytic activities to degrade RhB in aqueous solution, showing potential in water treatment application and providing an efficient and economical route for the development, usage, recycling, and reuse of precious high-Z material-based composites.

Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction Over BiOX on Needle Coke–Derived Graphene Composites

Tongyu Wu,Xiaoxiao Yu,Fuhai Zhang,Lei Wang,Minmeng Tang,Yanhong Chao,Haiyan Liu,Wenshuai Zhu

Substantial research has been dedicated to advancing visible-light photocatalysts for the conversion of CO 2 into sustainable fuels. The overall efficiency of this process is critically dependent on both the effective generation/separation of photogenerated charge carriers and the adsorption/activation of CO 2 reactants. Bismuth oxyhalides (BiOX) are promising due to their layered structure and built-in electric field, which facilitate charge separation. However, their practical application is often limited by insufficient CO 2 adsorption capacity and restricted visible-light harvesting. Herein, we report a series of composite photocatalysts constructed via the in situ growth of BiOX on needle coke–derived graphene (NCG). This integrated structure leverages the high specific surface area and inherent heteroatom doping of NCG to enhance CO 2 adsorption, while the resulting intimate heterojunction significantly promotes visible-light absorption (especially within 500–800 nm) and accelerates interfacial charge transfer. The optimized BiOBr-25%NCG composite achieves a remarkable CO production rate of 46.32 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 from photocatalytic CO 2 reduction without any sacrificial agents, representing a 13-fold enhancement over pristine NCG and a ∼4000-fold increase compared to bare BiOBr. The superior performance is attributed to the synergistic enhancement of light absorption, charge separation kinetics, and CO 2 adsorption activation. This work presents a viable strategy for developing efficient, low-cost photocatalytic systems by integrating functional carbon matrices derived from industrial byproducts with semiconductor catalysts.

Study on mannitol-enhanced visible light photocatalytic degradation of mixed pollutants by BiOX

Liu Xipeng,Wang Zhongjia,Zhou Zhangcai,Xin Guoxiang,Bao Jinxiao,Song Jinling

To address water pollution and limitations of existing photocatalysts, mannitol was used to fabricate tetragonal layered BiOX (X = Cl, Br, I) via a room-temperature precipitation method. Among them, BiOI with nanosheet structure exhibited broader light absorption, enhanced charge separation, and higher surface oxygen vacancies. These advantages enabled BiOI to degrade mixed pollutants (dyes, antibiotics, aromatic compounds) under visible light, achieving over 80% efficiency within 180 min. The main active species were h + and ·O 2 − . BiOI showed excellent recyclability and stability. This simple, eco-friendly synthesis offers great potential for treating complex industrial wastewater.

Meng Qiu,Dou Wang,Hao Huang,Teng Yin,Wenli Bao,Bin Zhang,Zhongjian Xie,Ni Xie,Zongze Wu,Chenchen Ge,Qi Wang,Meng Gu,Hilliard L. Kutscher,Liping Liu,Shiyun Bao,Paras N. Prasad,Han Zhang

Optoelectronic science and 2D nanomaterial technologies are currently at the forefront of multidisciplinary research and have numerous applications in electronics and photonics. The unique energy and optically induced interfacial electron transfer in these nanomaterials, enabled by their relative band alignment characteristics, can provide important therapeutic modalities for healthcare. Given that nano-heterostructures can facilitate photoinduced electron–hole separation and enhance generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), 2D nano-heterostructure-based photosensitizers can provide a major advancement in photodynamic therapy (PDT), to overcome the current limitations in hypoxic tumor microenvironments. Herein, a bismuthene/bismuth oxide (Bi/BiOx)-based lateral nano-heterostructure synthesized using a regioselective oxidation process is introduced, which, upon irradiation at 660 nm, effectively generates 1 O 2 under normoxia but produces cytotoxic •OH and H 2 under hypoxia, which synergistically enhances PDT. Furthermore, this Bi/BiOx nano-heterostructure is biocompatible and biodegradable, and, with the surface molecular engineering used here, it improves tumor tissue penetration and increases cellular uptake during in vitro and in vivo experiments, yielding excellent oxygen-independent tumor ablation with 660 nm irradiation, when compared with traditional PDT agents.

Tunable Oxygen Vacancies Enable Dynamic Infrared Response for Efficient CO2 Reduction on Plasmonic BiOx

Chen Liao,Mengyu Wang,Xiaofeng Kang,Dan Lei,Tengfei Ma,Ya Liu,Liejin Guo

Photocatalytic CO2 reduction offers a sustainable route to convert CO2 into value-added fuels, yet remains limited by poor infrared light utilization. Here, we report a nonmetallic plasmonic BiOx photocatalyst with tunable oxygen vacancies that enable continuous adjustment of infrared absorption from 700 to 1700 nm. By varying calcination temperature, the carrier concentration and localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) response are effectively modulated. Combined XPS, Mott–Schottky analysis, and control experiments reveal that gradient oxygen vacancies play a key role in regulating plasmonic intensity and catalytic activity. The optimized BiOx-180°C catalyst achieves efficient CO2 reduction under near-infrared illumination (>800 nm), delivering a total production rate of 3 μmol g-1 h-1 with 50.5% selectivity toward C2 products, which is 2.7 times higher than under UV–Vis light. Moreover, under full-spectrum illumination, BiOx exhibited an increased total product yield, demonstrating the synergistic effect between interband transitions and plasmonic excitations. Quasi-in situ XPS, light-assisted KPFM, and in situ DRIFTS further reveal that the LSPR effect facilitates C-C coupling pathways, promoting the generation of C2 products. This study highlights the potential of dynamic infrared response modulation in plasmonic semiconductors to advance efficient, broadband-driven photocatalytic CO2 reduction.

rGO-modified BiOX (X = Cl, I, Br) for enhanced photocatalytic eradication of gaseous mercury

Jun Cai,Yibing Xie,Chong Ma,Xueqian Wang,Langlang Wang,Ping Ning,Yixing Ma

Photocatalytic oxidation of gaseous heavy metals is an efficient approach to alleviate energy crises and environmental pollution. In this study, a novel two-step solvothermal method was designed to synthesize reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-modified bismuth oxyhalide (BiOX, X  = Cl, I, Br) nanosheets. The modification of rGO led to the significant enhancement in the specific surface area of BiOX nanosheets, reduction in the bandgap, improvements in the light absorption range and intensity, acceleration in the photogenerated carrier separation rate, and reduction in the photogenerated electron − hole complexation. Furthermore, both O 2 – and OH were demonstrated to be active species in the reaction. Owing to these achievements, all samples displayed significantly improved photocatalytic performance. Furthermore, the rGO-modified samples exhibited excellent stability and maintained the highest mercury removal efficiency after several cycles. However, the samples prepared in this research displayed a high level of moisture resistance. These characteristics of BiOX-based materials make them potential candidates for the photocatalytic removal of heavy metals from industrial waste gases.

Oxygen vacancy-engineered BiOX catalysts: Synergistically boosting redox kinetics and suppressing hydrogen evolution in Iron chromium flow batteries

Chao Guo,Yinping Liu,Yang Zhou,Chunming Xu,Quan Xu,Tianhang Zhou,Honglei Shi,Xiangping Zhang,Yingchun Niu

Iron‑chromium redox flow battery (ICRFB) offers an attractive technological pathway for low-cost, grid-scale energy storage integrated with renewable energy sources. However, the slow Cr 3+ /Cr 2+ redox kinetics at the anode and the coupled parasitic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), particularly at high current densities, remain major obstacles to their practical application. This study reports a layered structure coupled with oxygen vacancy (OV) engineering, which decouples the Cr redox activation and HER suppression processes to fully unlock the catalytic potential of halogenated bismuth (BiOX, X = Cl, Br, I). The designed BiOX catalyst leverages lattice distortion induced by halogen elements to create abundant OVs, while the asymmetric Bi-O-Cr bridging structure accelerates electron transfer during the Cr 3+ /Cr 2+ conversion. The mesoporous layered framework ensures rapid accessibility of redox-active species. By in situ anchoring this OV-rich BiOX catalyst onto porous carbon fiber, a high-performance electrode is successfully fabricated. Consequently, the ICRFB with OVs-rich BiOX-modified electrodes achieves an energy efficiency of 84.5% at 140 mA cm −2 , with exceptional stability over 400 cycles. This work elucidates the multifunctional role of OVs in BiOX for synergistically boosting Cr redox activity and mitigating parasitic HER, providing insights for the rational design of high-efficiency catalysts for ICRFB.

CAU-17-derived hollow tubular BiOX solid solution with oxygen vacancy: Optimized morphology and enhanced charge separation efficiency

Daiwei Li,Kejie Dai,Yajuan Xu,Jia Dong,Jiao Zhang,Siqi Ying,Huihui Gan,Cuiqing Zhang,Fengyuan Ling,Shizheng Zheng,Changyuan Hu

To overcome the limitations of insufficient active sites and rapid charge recombination in conventional bismuth oxyhalide (BiOX) photocatalysts, we developed a novel CAU-17-derived strategy for constructing hollow tubular BiOX solid solutions with oxygen vacancies (OVs). The confined chemical environment in the CAU-17 precursor provides favorable conditions for the preparation of OVs-enriched BiOX solid solutions via a one-pot, low-temperature halogenation method. This method is applicable to the preparation of diverse BiOX solid solutions like BiOCl x Br 1-x and BiOBr x I 1-x . The CAU-17 halogenation simultaneously endows BiOX solid solutions with a hollow tubular architecture, an enhanced specific surface area, and residual organic carbon. The embedded carbon establishes conductive pathways that significantly enhance the migration efficiency of charge carriers. Importantly, the formation of solid solution can strengthen the intensity of inherent IEF between [X m ] layer and [Bi 2 O 2 ] layer, thereby enhancing the driving force for carrier separation. OVs, as electron traps, also contribute to improve the carrier separation efficiency. The hollow tubular structure and favorable carrier separation efficiency collectively empower OVs-BiOCl 0.5 Br 0.5 /C with superior visible-light activity, impressively degrading 90 % of Rhodamine B within 60 min primarily through •O 2 - and h + active species. This work supplies a versatile MOF-derived approach for the synthesis of hollow tubular BiOX solid solution with oxygen defect as high performance photocatalyst.

A general strategy for obtaining BiOX nanoplates derived Bi nanosheets as efficient CO2 reduction catalysts by enhancing CO2•- adsorption and electron transfer

Peng Liu,Huiling Liu,Shun Zhang,Jie Wang,Cheng Wang

Electroreduction of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) into formic acid/formate has been considered as one of the most promising strategies for obtaining value-added fuels and chemical productions. Herein, we present a general method for preparing Bi-based electrocatalysts via in situ reduction of bismuth oxyiodide (BiOI) in CO 2 -saturated electrolyte. The precursors of BiOI nanoplates (P-nanoplates) with thickness of 30–40 nm could be easily obtained and provide a concise model to probe the mechanisms of CO 2 reduction to formate. BiOI nanoplates precursors derived Bi nanosheets (P-nanoplates-Bi) exhibited an excellent performance for CO 2 reduction to formate, achieving Faradaic efficiencies (FEs) over 80% in a wide potential window and a maximum FE approaching of 95% with a current density of 13.3 ± 0.6 mA cm −2 at −0.9 V versus reverse hydrogen electrode (υs. RHE). Such P-nanoplates-Bi nanosheets showed a stable electrocatalytic actitivity during 15 h operation in 0.5 M KHCO 3 aqueous solution. The superior performance is mainly attributed to the two-dimensional (2D) Bi nanosheets, which can increase CO 2 •- adsorption, enlarge active surface area, show better reaction kinetics and provide lower contact resistance with accelerated electron transfer . For comparison, precursors of BiOI plate-like (P-bulk) with doubled thicknesses and ultrathin BiOI with a few nanometers derived Bi catalysts tend to agglomerate and appear as irregular structured Bi nanoparticles during the reaction. Their peak FEs for formate are much lower than those of P-nanoplates derived Bi nanosheets at −0.9 V.

Enhanced photo-Fenton degradation for amoxicillin in aqueous by halogen-facet synergistic regulation of BiOX: Insights into photogenerated electron migration and oxidant activation

Li Wang,Chenyu Wang,Fan Li,Dongyao Yue,Chen Li,Yatao Liu,Zhenbei Wang,Fei Qi,Amir Ikhlaq,Jolanta Kumirska,Ewa Maria Siedlecka,Oksana Ismailova,Zukhra Kadirova

Halogen selection and facet engineering were effective strategies for catalyst optimization, however, their synergistic mechanism in enhancing photo-Fenton performance remained unclear. In this study, the effects of halogens (Br and I) and facets ({001}, {010} and {110}) on the photo-Fenton degradation of amoxicillin (AMX) by BiOX were systematically investigated. The results revealed that halogen selection and facet engineering enhanced the photo-Fenton performance by improving the separation efficiency of photogenerated electron ( e − ) and their activation capability toward oxidants. Among them, halogen selection (Br) played a dominant role in enhancing the degradation performance, while facet engineering ({010} facet) contributed secondary optimization. Experimental results demonstrated that in the presence of peroxydisulfate (PDS, 0.065 mM) and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 , 0.065 mM), BiOBr exhibited superior photo-Fenton performance to BiOI on all facets. For the same halogen, the BiOX with the {010} facet (BiOX-010/vis/oxidant) outperformed BiOX-001/vis/oxidant and BiOX-110/vis/oxidant in degradation activity. Further analysis from the perspective of band structure and photoelectrochemical properties revealed that BiOBr enhanced photogenerated e − separation efficiency and reduction capacity by modulating its band structure. Work function calculations indicated that exposure of the {010} facet facilitated the migration of photogenerated e − through Br–Bi/Br–O–Bi bonds, reducing its interfacial work function (2.72 eV), thereby significantly improving interfacial charge transfer efficiency. Under this synergistic regulation strategy of halogen and facet, BiOBr-010 exhibited the strongest PDS adsorption affinity ( E ads  = 2.78 kJ/mol), enabling BiOBr-010/vis/PDS to achieve excellent AMX degradation performance ( k obs  = 0.028 min −1 ). This study elucidate the contributions and mechanisms of halogen and facet types to the photo-Fenton performance, providing design strategies for the development of efficient and stable photo-Fenton systems.

Modulating Electron Density of Ce Site via a Ce–O–Bi configuration on Ce-BiOX (X = Cl, Br, I) to Boost Hydrogen Peroxide Electrosynthesis

Na Wang,Wenting Lu,Fengyan Han,Weiping Xiao,Xiaofei Yang

The electron density of Ce active center is modulated via constructing the Ce–O–Bi configuration in Ce-doped BiOX (X = Cl, Br, I). • Halogen-induced differences in electronegativity and ionic radius effectively modulate Bi–O lattice symmetry and electronic properties. • The optimal 2.5%Ce-BOB catalyst delivers excellent H 2 O 2 selectivity, high production yield and favorable 2e - ORR kinetics. • In-situ electro-generated H 2 O 2 realizes efficient electro-Fenton degradation of organic dye pollutants. The selectivity of two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e - ORR) is predominantly determined by the adsorption strength of the key intermediate *OOH on the catalyst active sites, which has often been tuned by 3d transition-metal doping. Herein, we fabricate rare earth Ce doped bismuth oxyhalide (BiOX, X = Cl, Br, I) catalysts. The built in Ce–O–Bi local configuration triggers efficient charge rearrangement and tunes the surface electron density of Ce active centers. Meanwhile, the differences in ionic radius and electronegativity among halogen species can modulate the symmetry of the Bi–O lattice, thereby forming a typical volcano-type correlation between the bond length and 2e - ORR catalytic performance. The synergistic effect of Ce doping and halogen modulation endows the 2.5%Ce-BOB catalyst with optimal 2e - ORR performance. It delivers a H 2 O 2 selectivity of over 90% within the potential range of 0.2-0.6 V and achieves a H 2 O 2 production rate of 2631.4 mmol g -1 h -1 at 0.1 V. Furthermore, this optimized catalyst demonstrates potential application in organic wastewater treatment, where the degradation efficiency of methylene blue (MB) reaches approximately 95% in 40 min and that of rhodamine B (RhB) approaches 99% in 15 min. This work provides new insights into the rational design of electrocatalysts and environmental applications of electrosynthesized H 2 O 2 via the synergistic regulation of rare-earth metal doping and halogen modulation. The synergistic strategy integrating Ce-doping and halogen modulation finely tailors the electronic environment of Ce active centers, endowing the 2.5%Ce-BOB electrocatalyst with favorable H 2 O 2 selectivity, considerable production capacity and effective electro-Fenton degradation of organic dyes.
