Ternary composites as electrode materials have attracted extensive attention due to their excellent electrochemical performance in energy-storage technologies as compared to single or binary composites. Herein, we demonstrated a facile two-step method to construct a new hierarchical nanocomposite by combing buckypaper (BP) with γ-MnOOH nanorods and polyaniline. BP is used as a conductive substrate for the synthesis of free-standing hierarchical electrodes. The structural characterizations revealed the growth of a hierarchical porous structure of the ternary electrode. The synthesized polyaniline@γ-MnOOH–BP ternary composite electrode shows a maximum specific capacitance of 567.5 F g−1 at a current density of 0.5 A g−1 and a relatively high areal capacitance of 301.2 mF cm−2 at a current density of 0.27 mA cm−2. This intriguing result is ascribed to the good combination of BP, γ-MnOOH, and PANI. We believe that this ternary composite electrode has potential in portable, environmentally friendly, and wearable applications for next generation energy-storage devices.

To effectively extract target analytes from complex sample surfaces is of great significance for the practical application of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy. A plasmonic substrate with multiple “hotspots” for highly sensitive detection of pesticide residues were prepared successfully by assembling gold nanoparticles on buckypaper (AuNPs-BP). The substrate exhibited high SERS enhancement and excellent detection sensitivity, with a detection limit (LOD) of 2.03 × 10 -11 M and 6.88 × 10 -12 M for the probe molecule R6G and MB, respectively. Combined with 3D finite-difference time-domain (3D-FDTD) simulation, the excellent SERS performance of the substrate was attributed to the enhancement of the electromagnetic field around the “hotspots”. Additionally, the substrates exhibited excellent flexibility, allowing easy contact with irregular surfaces and facilitating the collection of target molecules on the sample surface. Using a portable Raman spectrometer, the substrate achieved in situ analysis of chlorpyrifos residues on peach, with a LOD as low as 6.8 × 10 -11 M. The method showed high accuracy, with a recovery value ranging from 94.2 % to 115.5 %. The results indicate that the substrate has great potential for rapid and highly sensitive detection of pollutants, especially on non-planar surfaces.

This study successfully fabricates an ultra-lightweight buckypaper(BP)-Ni-Cu layered structure film using vacuum filtration and chemical-electroplating methods, achieving a thickness of 34 µm and a surface density of 50 g m − 2 . The film exhibits a notably low surface square resistance of 9.5 mΩ □ −1 . Regarding electromagnetic shielding performance, it exhibits exceptional effectiveness across multiple frequency bands: 96.67 dB in the Partial S-band (2.6–4 GHz), 65.05 dB in the C1 band (4–6 GHz), 64.23 dB in the C2 band (6–8 GHz), 87.04 dB in the X band (8–12 GHz), and 90.46 dB in the Ku band (12–18 GHz). In terms of mechanical properties, compared with the tensile fracture strength of 33.67 MPa of the BP film, the tensile fracture strength of the BP-Ni film is enhanced to 51.9 MPa, and that of the BP-Ni-Cu film is elevated to 49.43 MPa. Additionally, the film demonstrates good thermal stability at temperatures up to 300 ° C. It also exhibits favorable electrical conductivity. Overall, considering its excellent characteristics, including multi-band shielding and ultra-lightweight properties, this film presents a novel and highly promising solution for aerospace electromagnetic shielding applications.

To improve the interlaminar properties of carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites (CFRPs), a hybrid fiber mat (i-MBP-PCF) was prepared by in situ deposition of a multiwalled carbon nanotube buckypaper (i-MBP) on the surface of functionalized CF fabric (PCF). The effect of the hybrid fiber mat on the interlaminar and electrical properties was systematically investigated. The results showed that the i-MBP-PCF hybrid fiber mat showed excellent interlaminar and electrical property enhancement functions. The interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), Mode-II interlaminar fracture toughness (G IIC ), and electrical conductivity in the out-of-plane direction of i-MBP-PCF/EP increased 68.6%, 44.4%, and 6080%, respectively, compared to those of the CF/EP composite.

Herein, a series of foldable buckypaper/polyacrylonitrile (BP/PAN) composite films were developed in a facile strategy. This strategy was based on electrospun and vacuum pressurized filtration methods. The composite film had better mechanical properties than pristine BP via interface reinforcing, but not deprived of excellent conductivity. The maximum tensile strength and elongation at break of BP/PAN films were 1.45 and 11.65 times than pristine BP, respectively. Moreover, BP/PAN film had higher electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness (63.7–65 dB) in the Ku band (12–18 GHz) than pristine BP (34.3–42.9 dB), due to interfaces forming between PAN fibers and CNTs. The BP/PAN composite as a promising EMI shielding material could be utilized in military and civil applications, such as flexible antenna, EMI shielding clothes and soft portable electronic products.

Graphene oxide (GO) and carbon nanotubes are promising microwave-absorbing materials. Herein, ferroferric oxide (Fe3O4)/multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) and Fe3O4/GO hybrid buckypapers with excellent flexibility and manoeuvrability were coated on the surface of an epoxy substrate to fabricate microwave-absorbing composites. Fe3O4/GO buckypapers show a unique layered structure that differs from the complex network structure of Fe3O4/MWCNT buckypapers. Therefore, the Fe3O4/GO buckypapers exhibit lower tensile strength and toughness than the Fe3O4/MWCNT buckypapers, and the minimum electromagnetic reflection loss of Fe3O4/GO buckypapers is higher than that of Fe3O4/MWCNT buckypapers. Further, Fe3O4/GO buckypapers have a wider effective absorption-frequency band than Fe3O4/MWCNT buckypapers at 2.0–18.0 GHz. Although the mechanical properties of epoxy resin composites coated with Fe3O4/MWCNT or Fe3O4/GO buckypapers show a slight deterioration in comparison with those of the epoxy resin substrate, both buckypapers exhibit improved microwave-absorption performance compared with the epoxy resin substrate.

Achieving self-supporting superflexible binder-free composites where all components serve simultaneously as structural backbones and microwave-absorbers is a technical challenge. This study successfully combined several microwave absorbing materials, including Fe 3 O 4 , NiCo-MOF derivatives, and CNTs, into a binder-free self-supporting superflexible Buckypaper in one step through directional pressure filtration. Fe 3 O 4 -CoNi-MOF was in-situ grown on a single CNT to form a magnetic MOF-coated CNT (CNT@MOF), which was then subjected to high-temperature carbonization to obtain a magnetic MOF-derived carbon-coated CNT (CNT@Fe 3 O 4 /CoNi-C). The combination of Fe₃O₄/CoNi-MOF and CNTs simultaneously promotes magnetic loss and dielectric loss, thereby significantly enhancing impedance matching and electromagnetic energy attenuation capabilities. The optimal carbonization temperature for the CNT@Fe 3 O 4 /CoNi-C Buckypaper is 700 ℃, at which the minimum reflection loss (RL min ) is −58.12 dB and the absorption bandwidth is 5.02 GHz. The interweaving of CNTs forms a robust yet superflexible skeleton, while the in-situ growth of Fe₃O₄/CoNi-MOF derivatives on a single CNT enhances the structural stability of the skeleton. The Buckypaper remains intact after repeated 2 mm-radius curling, knotting, 180° bending. Therefore, this study presents new insights into the preparation of self-supporting, superflexible MOF-derived microwave absorption materials.

A balance between electrical and magnetic properties is critical for electromagnetic shielding materials to achieve excellent electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and attenuation effectiveness across a broad frequency range. We have prepared free-standing buckypaper films (BPFP) decorated with Fe 3 O 4 particles and polyaniline (PANI) by a simple two-step method to meet this requirement. First, buckypaper films decorated with Fe 3 O 4 (BPF) were synthesized by the coprecipitation of Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ ions on buckypaper (BP) which was then coated with a polyaniline layer by the in situ polymerization of aniline monomers. Magnetic characterization revealed that the BPF and BPFP films had saturation magnetization ( M s ) values of 14.3 emu g −1 and 13.0 emu g −1 , respectively, confirming retention of the magnetic phase. The addition of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles and polyaniline to BP (30 μm) increased both the magnetic and dielectric losses due to the increased interfacial polarizations and anisotropy energy. 41 μm-thick BPF and BPFP films had an absorption-dominated shielding effectiveness of 35.1 dB and 36.4 dB, respectively, across the 5.85-18 GHz frequency band. These values are respectively 12.9% and 17.0% greater than that of pristine BP, highlighting the positive effect of Fe 3 O 4 -PANI heterostructures on electromagnetic wave dissipation. These films also had the tensile strength, flexibility, and lightness of BP, demonstrating exceptional promise for next-generation electromagnetic shielding materials.

Single-crystalline ultra-fine sized LiNi x Co y Al 1-x-y O 2 (NCA) features stable Al─O bonds and crack-resistantance due to no grain boundaries, exhibiting excellent long charge–discharge cycle stability as a lithium-ion battery cathode. With flexible electronics growing, flexible energy storage materials are urgently needed. However, preparing single-crystalline ultra-fine NCA particles and assembling them into a self-supported superflexible cathode is still a tough challenge. Here, submicron-sized Ni-rich LiNi 0.89 Co 0.09 Al 0.02 O 2 single-crystals were made via a molten-salt-assisted high-temperature solid-phase method with lithium added during annealing. Then, they were combined with carbon nanotubes by directional pressure filtration to form a superflexible porous hybrid buckypaper (BP). Under O 2 , sintering at 750°C for 15 h with 1.03 Li addition and annealing with a Li source at 750°C for 5 h gave the optimal submicron-sized NCA single crystals. The BP could curl around a 2 mm-radius rod, bend 180°, knot without damage, and had 9.59 MPa tensile strength. In a lithium-ion battery, at 1C, its initial and 200-cycle capacities were respectively 192.27 and 179.3 mAh/g (93.2% retention); at 5C, respectively 135.4 and 132.9 mAh/g (98% retention). This work offers a new idea for self-supported flexible cathode construction.

The design of laminated structures is important for tuning the performance of microwave absorbing materials with integrated structures and functions, but still faces great challenges. Herein, a self-sealing layered structure that integrates a laminated structure and a self-sealing structure is proposed. In this work, CNT buckypaper (BP) was first helically convolved to obtain a three-dimensional (3D) self-sealing layered fiber. Subsequently, 3D CNT BP/silicon carbide (CNT BP/SiC) self-sealing layered (CSSL) substrates, i.e., fiber, monolithic fiber and twisted fiber structures, were prepared by changing the self-sealing layered fiber arrangement methods. Meanwhile, the impedance matching of the CSSL substrates was improved by using the SiC nanowire (SiCnw) porous film as a cladding layer. The synergistic effect of good impedance matching and the self-sealing layered structure endowed the CSSL substrates clad with SiCnw porous film (CSSLS) composites with excellent microwave attenuation properties. The minimum reflection loss values for the CSSLS with fiber, monolithic fiber and twisted fiber structures were −49.35, −50.77 and −55.02 dB respectively, and the corresponding maximum effective absorption bandwidths were 3.50, 3.50 and 3.99 GHz, respectively, in the X-band. The twisted fiber structure, which had the most complex structure, had the best microwave absorption properties.
