Efficient C3H6/C3H8 Separation in a Scalable Adenine-Based Metal–Organic Framework

Kuan Lu,Jiali Fu,Qingxue Hui,Deli Li,Xiangyang Zhang,Qi Ding,Zhaoqiang Zhang

Propylene/propane (C3H6/C3H8) separation remains a major challenge because of the substantial energy input required to produce polymer-grade C3H6. Here, we report a scalable adenine-based metal–organic framework, Cu-AD-HEA, that enables efficient C3H6/C3H8 separation through a confined pore environment featuring distinct corner cavities. Its Z-shaped pore channels integrate corner-cavity confinement, pore-space partitioning by phenylene diacetate linkers, and multiple Lewis basic sites from adenine ligands, thereby creating a confined recognition environment for selective C3H6 adsorption over C3H8. Breakthrough experiments using equimolar C3H6/C3H8 mixtures demonstrate effective dynamic separation performance, affording a C3H6 working capacity of 1.91 mmol g–1. Molecular simulations reveal that both guest molecules occupy similar pore regions, whereas C3H6 is preferentially recognized through stronger cooperative host–guest interactions within the corner cavities. Moreover, a two-bed pressure-swing adsorption process further confirms the practical capability of Cu-AD-HEA for the coproduction of high-purity C3H6 and C3H8.

Ultrathin ZIF-8 Membrane through Inhibited Ostwald Ripening for High-Flux C3H6/C3H8 Separation

Jianyu Wang,Yan Wang,Yutao Liu,Hong Wu,Mingang Zhao,Yanxiong Ren,Yunchuan Pu,Wenping Li,Shaoyu Wang,Shuqing Song,Xu Liang,Guangwei He,You Han,Zhongyi Jiang

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are one of the most promising membrane materials for olefin/paraffin separations. However, most of MOF membranes have a thickness over 1 µm, which greatly compromises the permeation flux. While previous studies are focused on increasing crystal nucleus density on the substrates, achieving ultrathin membrane via modulation of the crystal growth is lacking. Herein, an inhibited Ostwald ripening (IOR) strategy is proposed to fabricate ultrathin ZIF-8 membranes, through incorporating polymer-based inhibitors into the membrane formula to inhibit the growth process of ZIF-8 crystals via the metal–organic coordination. The IOR process can be readily tuned by varying the functional groups, molecular weights, and concentrations of the inhibitors, enabling a facile control over the IOR degree and thus the membrane thickness. Consequently, the thickness of ZIF-8 membranes can be dramatically reduced to 180 nm. The resulting membranes exhibit ultrahigh C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation performance with C 3 H 6 permeance of 386 GPU and C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation factor of 120. It is anticipated that this straightforward and efficient IOR strategy can open a new avenue for the fabrication of ultrathin MOF membranes to tackle many critical molecular separations.

The interface regulation strategy constructing high performance C3H6/C3H8 separation membranes via bio-based polyphenols

Dacheng Zhang,Qian Zhang,Ningning Gao,Leixin Yang,Yuchao Ma,Hang Li,Zhanfeng Zhao,Junkui Gao,Kaihua Li,Shuo Yang,Dengkun Shu,Huiguo Wang,Bowen Cheng

Mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs), which integrate processable polymer with highly selective filler, exhibit significant potential for molecular separation. However, the bottleneck in regulating interface compatibility and minimizing mass transfer resistance restricts its practical application. Herein, we present a bio-based polyphenol interfacial engineering strategy to fabricate high-performance hollow ZIF-8 (HZIF-8) based MMMs (PI@H-8) for C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation. The hydroxyl groups on tannic acid (polyphenols) etch ZIF-8 and generate HZIF-8. In addition, these hydroxyl groups also form H-bonding interactions with polyimide (PI), effectively enhancing interfacial compatibility and suppressing the formation of non-selective voids. Furthermore, the HZIF-8 provides additional mass transfer channels and reduces gas transport resistance. Ultimately, the PI@H-8(20) achieved a C 3 H 6 permeability of 99.81 Barrer and a C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 selectivity of 20.32, which is higher than pristine PI and MMM loading 20 wt% ZIF-8, and exceeds the Robeson upper bound. The interfacial engineering strategy presents a brand-new insight into designing advanced high-performance MMMs for gas separation.

Pt@TiOx/TiO2 as a highly effective and stable recipe for C3H8 and C3H6 combustion

Jiali Zhou,Ge Li,Hongfei Li,Ziran Ma,Shuang Liu,Xiaolong Tang

Sintering is among the most challenging obstacles preventing the development of platinum catalysts that highly effective for hydrocarbon combustion at low temperatures. To overcome this obstacle, a Pt@TiO 2 catalyst with platinum nanoparticles encapsulated by TiO x overlayers was synthesized in this article, via melamine-mediated calcinations at 800 °C in air. Being physically constrained (“protected”) and electronically buffered (“Pt x + /Pt 0  ↔ Ti 3+ /Ti 4+ ”) by the thermally stable TiO x , this catalyst preserved a large amount of reactive metallic Pt 0 sites, which therefore exhibited obviously higher activity for C 3 H 8 and C 3 H 6 combustion in comparison with conventional supported Pt/TiO 2 catalysts. Moreover, steam and SO 2 in the reaction atmospheres caused reversible influences on the catalytic performance of this sample, indicating the high practical potential of such a recipe for the design of platinum catalysts with superior activity and durability for hydrocarbon combustion.

Fabrication of polymer-supported ZIF-8 membranes via interfacial-epitaxial coupled growth for C3H6/C3H8 separation

Su-Qi Yao,Yu-Jie Wang,Bing-Hong Chen,Li-Hao Xu,Heng Mao,Zhi-Ping Zhao

The fabrication of polymer-supported metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes is a promising approach for efficient C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation. However, the main obstacles to construct MOF layers are low nucleation density at substrate interface and uncontrolled crystal growth, which hinders the concurrent attainment of a defect-free structure and an ultrathin separation layer. Herein, we report a synergistic strategy combining coordination anchoring with interfacial-epitaxial coupled (IEC) growth. Initially, a polyacrylic acid (PAA) functional layer was introduced onto the substrate surface to achieve coordination anchoring of Zn 2+ ions. Subsequently, an asymmetric concentration gradient of reactants was established at the surface of substrate through contra-diffusion growth, confining the nucleation of ZIF-8 crystals strictly to the interfacial region. This process culminated in in-situ growth in a high-concentration ligand environment, promoting epitaxial crystal growth and repairing intercrystalline microdefects, thereby enhancing the crystallinity and structural order of the MOF layer. The optimized membrane achieved a high C 3 H 6 permeance of 417.1 GPU with a C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 selectivity of 36.3 for equimolar C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 mixtures, along with excellent thermal stability, pressure resistance, and long-term operational stability. This work highlights the synergistic regulation of MOF growth via confined nucleation and interfacial engineering and develops a novel strategy for the controlled fabrication of defect-free MOF membranes on flexible substrates.

Staggered interfacial pores in hollow ZIF-67@ZIF-8 enable efficient C3H6/C3H8 separation in MMMs

Yuchao Ma,Qian Zhang,Dacheng Zhang,Ningning Gao,Leixin Yang,Hang Li,Ge Wang,Bo Liu,Zhanfeng Zhao,Yi Liang,Kaihua Li,Huiguo Wang,Bowen Cheng

Membrane separation technology offers a promising energy-efficient alternative to the energy-intensive separation of alkenes from alkanes, yet existing membranes are generally constrained by low selectivity and high mass transfer resistance. To address this, we constructed hollow ZIF-67@ZIF-8 (H-ZIF-67@8) core-shell nanocages with staggered interfacial pores and sieve properties, and incorporated them into a polyimide to fabricate mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). Mechanistic investigations reveal that the hollow cavity of H-ZIF-67@8 significantly minimizes diffusion resistance and serves as a fast track for gas transport. In addition, the staggered interfacial pores induced by lattice mismatch at the H-ZIF-67@8 core-shell interface enable precise kinetic sieving of C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 . By synergistically intensifying the diffusion and sieving mechanisms, the optimized MMM with 20 wt% loading showed a C 3 H 6 permeability of 62.12 Barrer and a C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 selectivity of 33.52, thereby surpassing the 2003 Robeson upper bound. This work provides new insights for the molecular engineering design of next-generation high-performance gas separation membranes.

Construction of Fluorinated Propane-Trap in Metal–Organic Frameworks for Record Polymer-Grade Propylene Production under High Humidity Conditions

Yong Wang,Tong Li,Libo Li,Rui-Biao Lin,Xiaoxia Jia,Zeyu Chang,Hui-Min Wen,Xiao-Ming Chen,Jinping Li

Propane/propene (C 3 H 8 /C 3 H 6 ) separation is essential in the petrochemical industry but challenging because of their similar physical and chemical properties. Adsorptive separation with C 3 H 8 -selective porous materials can energy-efficiently produce high-purity C 3 H 6 , which is highly promising for replacing conventional cryogenic distillation but suffers from unsatisfactory performance. Herein, through the precise incorporation of fluorinated functional groups into the confined pore space, a new fluorinated metal–organic framework (FDMOF-2) featuring the unique and strong C 3 H 8 -trap is successfully constructed. FDMOF-2 exhibits an unprecedented C 3 H 8 capture capacity of 140 cm 3 cm −3 and excellent C 3 H 8 /C 3 H 6 (1:1, v/v) selectivity up to 2.18 (298 K and 1 bar), thus setting new benchmarks for all reported porous materials. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal that the tailored pore confinement in FDMOF-2 provides stronger and multiple attractive interactions with C 3 H 8 , enabling excellent binding affinities. Breakthrough experiments demonstrate that C 3 H 8 can be directly extracted from various C 3 H 8 /C 3 H 6 mixtures with FDMOF-2, affording an outstanding C 3 H 6 production (501 mmol L −1 ) with over 99.99% purity. Benefiting from the robust framework and hydrophobic ligands, the separation performance of FDMOF-2 can be well maintained even under 70% relative humidity conditions.

A copper-based metal-organic framework for upgrading natural gas through the recovery of C2H6 and C3H8

Shao-Min Wang,Qing-Yuan Yang

Natural gas processing involves the separation of higher hydrocarbons (C2–C3) from methane, which is an important and energy-intensive operation. In this paper, we present a comprehensive study of an innovative copper-based MOF (Cu-MOF) for the separation of propane and ethane from methane. The material exhibits a high adsorption capacity and selectivity for C2–C3 hydrocarbons over methane, which is primarily due to its preferential C2–C3 hydrocarbon adsorption. The adsorption isotherms at ambient conditions showed a remarkable uptake of C 3 H 8 of 134.0 cm 3 /g, as well as excellent selectivity of 204 and 9 for C 3 H 8 /CH 4 and C 2 H 6 /CH 4 . According to the theoretical calculations, differences in van der Waals interactions and polarizability of the guest molecules were responsible for influencing separation performance. In addition, we conducted adsorption kinetic experiments, dynamic breakthrough, and cycling experiments to further examine the separation performance. Overall, this research establishes an energy-efficient adsorbent for upgrading natural gas.

A Ni-based metal-organic framework with super-high C3H8 uptake for adsorptive separation of light alkanes

Daofei Lv,Zewei Liu,Feng Xu,Houxiao Wu,Wenbing Yuan,Jian Yan,Hongxia Xi,Xin Chen,Qibin Xia

The separation of C 2 H 6 and C 3 H 8 from CH 4 is extremely important in the petrochemical industry, but the separation technology is dominated by an energy-intensive and cost-intensive process of cryogenic distillation. With lower energy consumption and cost investment, adsorptive separation technology shows great potential for the purification of natural gas. Here, we prepared a Ni-based metal-organic framework CTGU-15 and investigated its performance for the separation of light alkanes. Results show that CTGU-15 has super-high C 3 H 8 uptake (12.13 mmol/g) and relatively low CH 4 uptake (0.40 mmol/g) at 298 K and 100 kPa. The reason why CTGU-15 shows super-high C 3 H 8 uptake was studied by comparing the pore textural properties of CTGU-15 and other benchmark adsorbents. Additionally, computational simulations were used to explore the nature of the interaction of the C 3 H 8 gas within CTGU-15. The adsorption selectivities of C 3 H 8 /CH 4 and C 2 H 6 /CH 4 on CTGU-15 are 170.7 and 5.2, respectively. Breakthrough experiments show that CTGU-15 can achieve the adsorptive separation of CH 4 /C 2 H 6 /C 3 H 8 mixtures. Importantly, CTGU-15 can maintain the stability of the framework after the heat treatment at <770 K, five adsorption-desorption cycles and exposure to 58% RH for 3 days. This work indicates that CTGU-15 is a promising adsorbent for CH 4 /C 2 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation.

A high-surface-area La-Ce-Mn mixed oxide with enhanced activity for CO and C3H8 oxidation

Baohuai Zhao,Rui Ran,Li Sun,Zesheng Yang,Xiaodong Wu,Duan Weng

A high-surface-area La-Ce-Mn mixed oxide was synthesized by citrate method, with further acid etching to dissolve the La 3   + ions in the lattice. The acid etching process efficiently improved the specific surface area, increased the ratios of Mn 4   + /Mn n   + , Ce 3   + /Ce n   + , O α /O tot , and enhanced the oxygen mobility of the catalyst, which were responsible for the superior catalytic performance. Compared to the pristine La 0.8 Ce 0.2 MnO 3   +   δ catalyst, the etched one could convert CO and C 3 H 8 more efficiently, with 90% conversion of CO and C 3 H 8 at only 73 and 196   °C, respectively. Such superior catalytic performance made it possible to be used for automotive emission control during cold-start period.

Towards ZIF-8 membranes with superb C3H6/C3H8 separation performances under varying conditions: Necessity of precise temperature control

Taotao Ji,Jiahui Yan,Yongfu He,Wenjing Hu,Yuan Peng,Weishen Yang,Yi Liu

Despite their huge potential in C 3 H 6 refinement, ZIF-8 membranes still struggle to achieve stable production of high-purity C 3 H 6 , owing to their fluctuant performances under changing operating conditions. In this study, a previous low-temperature synthetic protocol was further optimized to improve the microstructure of ZIF-8 membranes for pressure-resistent C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation through precisely regulating the reaction temperature between −15 °C and 5 °C. The elevation of reaction temperature gave rise to reduced grain boundary defects at the cost of increased membrane thickness. Of particular note, carrying out reaction between −2.5 °C and 2.5 °C assured an exact balance between upward intergrowth and inner penetration and thus, the formation of well-intergrown semi-confined ZIF-8 membrane featuring pressure-resistant C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation even at operating temperature as high as 125 °C. At feed pressure of 7 bar, our membrane remained a separation factor approaching 190 with C 3 H 6 permeance up to 2.9×10 -8  mol m -2  s -1 Pa -1 , thus demonstrating the best separation performance under similar test conditions. Moreover, our membrane could maintain a stable separation capacity at C 3 H 6 feed fraction of 1%–99%, which has never been addressed in previous literature. The above stable and outstanding separation performance recommend our membrane a superb choice for reliable batch production of high-purity C 3 H 6 .

Uncovering the opposite behavior of SO2 on C3H8 oxidation over Pd/Pt-SiO2 catalysts under diverse oxygen conditions

Yutao Chen,Jihui Xiang,Jinmin Xie,Xinyu Wang,Zeyu Jiang,Yanfei Jian,Mudi Ma,Chi He

SO 2 exhibits opposite effects on C 3 H 8 oxidation over Pd/SiO 2 and Pt/SiO 2 . • O 2 concentration regulates sulfur species evolution and SO 2 tolerance. • Sulfate species block Pd active sites and induce Pd particle sintering over Pd/SiO 2 . • Pt-O-O-S structures on Pt/SiO 2 promote C 3 H 8 adsorption and C-H cleavage. The oxygen concentration in industrial C 3 H 8 -containing exhausts fluctuates significantly (from 0.5 to 18 vol%). However, the intrinsic effect of SO 2 on catalytic C 3 H 8 oxidation under diverse oxygen conditions is greatly overlooked, leading to a discrepancy in the SO 2 tolerance of developed catalyst between laboratory and real-world emission conditions. Herein, the influences of oxygen contents on sulfur species distribution and subsequent sulfur tolerance of typical Pd/SiO 2 and Pt/SiO 2 catalysts during C 3 H 8 oxidation were systematically explored. Experimental results reveal that the oxygen concentration dramatically affects the types and contents of sulfur species over catalysts. For Pd/SiO 2 , SO 2 tends to be converted into sulfate (SO 4 2- ) species to cover the Pd 0 active sites and causes Pd particle sintering, thereby inhibiting the C 3 H 8 adsorption and oxidation. In sharp contrast, sulfite (SO 3 2- ) species form on Pt/SiO 2 , leading to a novel Pt-O-O-S active interface that enriches the adjacent Pt site with electrons, promoting C 3 H 8 adsorption and C-H cleavage and further enhancing catalytic activity. As oxygen concentration decreases, the impact of SO 2 on catalytic performance becomes more pronounced. Under the oxygen-lean conditions, Pd particles sintering caused by SO 2 is the most severe at 1 vol% O 2 , causing an 80 °C temperature increasing in 90% C 3 H 8 conversion; however, the contents of SO 3 2- species and Pt-O-O-S structures on Pt/SiO 2 are elevated, facilitating C 3 H 8 adsorption and activation. Our findings enrich the understanding of SO 2 behavior under different industrial conditions, providing a theoretical basis for the design of SO 2 -tolerant catalyst in diverse application scenarios.
