In the present work, a ternary composite MoS2/soluble g-C3N4/CdS was synthesized using a facile one-pot hydrothermal reaction and conventional reflux reaction method. The composition, morphology, and properties of the ternary composite were characterized. The photocatalytic performance of the ternary composite was evaluated for hydrogen generation under LED lamp irradiation (450 nm < λ < 465 nm) with lactic acid (LA) used as a sacrificial reagent. The results demonstrated that the maximum hydrogen production reached 4869.6 μmol under the optimal hydrogen production conditions, including a composition of 20% soluble g-C3N4, 9% MoS2, a solution pH of 1, and an irradiation time of 6 hours. The corresponding hydrogen production rate for the ternary composite was calculated to be 8116 μmol g−1 h−1. Furthermore, a possible electron transfer mechanism of the ternary composite system was briefly explored. The interaction and synergistic effects between MoS2, soluble g-C3N4, and CdS in the ternary composite likely facilitate efficient electron transfer, resulting in enhanced photocatalytic activity for hydrogen production. Mechanistic research showed that the electron transfer pathway represented either a double or single type II heterojunction photocatalytic system.

To further enhance the bio-photoelectrochemical system (BPES) performance for nitrofurazone (NFZ) degradation and current output, the g-C 3 N 4 /CdS photocathode was optimized, and microbial community shift from inoculation to the BPES was analyzed. Results showed that photocathode with g-C 3 N 4 /CdS (mass ratio of 1:9) loading of 7.5 mg/cm 2 exhibited the best performance, with NFZ removal of 83.14% (within 4 h) and current of ~9 mA in the BPES. Proteobacteria accounted for the largest proportion: 66.53% (inoculation), 71.89% (microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) anode), 74.67% (BPES anode) and 57.31% (BPES cathode), respectively. In addition, Geobacter was the most dominant genus in MEC and BPES anode and cathode, which occupied 31.64%, 67.73% and 41.34%, respectively. The microbial compositions of BPES anode and cathode were similar, but different from that of MEC anode. Notably, Rhodopseudomonas , a photosynthetic species, was detected in the BPES. Cognition of microbial community in the BPES is important for advancing its development.

The construction of heterojunction systems is an effective way to efficiently generate hydrogen by water photolysis. In this work, Ni-MOF (trimesic acid, (BTC)) and g-C 3 N 4 (denoted as CN) were combined, and then Ni-MOF/CN was modified by 4-Methyl-5-vinyl thiazole (denoted as MVTh). Finally, CdS was loaded on the surface of Ni-MOF/CN/MVTh to prepare the photocatalyst Ni-MOF/g-C 3 N 4 /MVTh/CdS (denoted as Ni/CN/M/Cd) with a triangular closed-loop path heterojunction for the first time. As a photocatalyst without precious metal cocatalysts, Ni/CN/M/Cd displayed high H 2 evolution (17.844 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 ) under an optimum CdS loading of 40 wt%. The H 2 evolution rate was approximately 79 times that of Ni-MOF/CN and exceeded those of almost all catalysts based on MOF/CN in the literature. The triangular closed-loop heterojunction formed between Ni-MOF, g-C 3 N 4 , and CdS could realize the directional migration of photocarriers and significantly diminished the transfer resistance of carriers. The Ni 2+ in Ni-MOF provided many cocatalytic sites for H 2 evolution via g-C 3 N 4 and CdS. Furthermore, charge carrier separation in Ni-MOF/CN/CdS improved after the innovative addition of MVTh. This study provides a reference for the construction of a closed-loop heterojunction system without precious metal cocatalysts.

Photocatalytic antibacterial materials, which kill bacteria by generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) without relying on metal ion components, offer higher safety and environmental friendliness, making them a key focus of current antibacterial research. Traditional photocatalytic materials exhibit limited responsiveness to visible light, and their antibacterial efficacy diminishes when the generation of ROS is suppressed. Therefore, this study developed a g-C 3 N 4 /CdS-Cu Z-scheme heterojunction with strong visible light responsiveness, enabling the generation of alternative ROS when one type is inhibited. The material exhibited excellent antibacterial performance under visible light, with antimicrobial rates of 95.46 % and 95.91 % against E. coli and S. aureus , respectively. Microstructural and photoelectric analyses confirmed that the material possessed a tightly coupled two-dimensional heterostructure with full-spectrum absorption capacity and efficient separation of photogenerated charge carriers. Additionally, density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed changes in electron transfer pathways and energy band structure, further supporting the proposed antibacterial mechanism. In practical application tests, g-C 3 N 4 /CdS-Cu showed good performance in water treatment. This study on the “ROS compensation” mechanism provides a theoretical basis for the development of advanced photocatalytic antibacterial materials and expands their application range.

The development of visible-light-active photocatalysts with high performance has been regarded as a promising way to address environmental wastewater issues. In this work, a highly efficient g-C3N4/CdS/TiO2 ternary Z-type heterojunction photocatalyst with a hollow structure has been fabricated using a step-by-step self-assembly strategy, which demonstrates excellent photocatalytic performance under visible light and removes various water-soluble organic pollutants effectively. The photocatalytic degradation efficiency of 20-g-C3N4/CdS/TiO2-10 against rhodamine B (RhB) is found to be 29.8 times higher than that of the pristine g-C3N4 within 90 minutes of visible light irradiation attributed to the active species of ˙O2− and h+. Liquid chromatography mass spectrometry results suggest that the degradation pathway of RhB involves main steps such as N-de-ethylation, chromophore cleavage, ring opening, and mineralization. A series of characterization analyses, combined with the observed enhanced photocatalytic performance, indicate that the g-C3N4/CdS/TiO2 ternary heterojunction benefits from the rapid transport and separation of photogenerated carriers facilitated by the formation of a heterointerface. Furthermore, the g-C3N4/CdS/TiO2 ternary heterojunction exhibits favorable stability, with 88.1% degradation efficiency after five cycles of degradation experiments. This work provides novel insights into the preparation and application of ternary heterojunctions with superior photocatalytic performance for eliminating organic pollutants from wastewater.

The rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers and the narrow absorption range of visible light greatly limit the photocatalytic activity of graphite carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ). Herein, g-C 3 N 4 was jointly modified by carbon dots (CDs) and copolymerization via in situ co-calcining of three precursors (urea, glucose and 2-amino-5-iodo-benzonitrile (I-ABN)), and named as I-ABN x -C 3 N 4 @CDs y . Then, solid-state Z-scheme photocatalysts PC1–PC9 with CDs as the electron mediators were prepared via in situ growth of BiOI on the surface of I-ABN x -C 3 N 4 @CDs y through solvothermal method. The optimal proportion of each component was explored through orthogonal experiments. The existence of CDs act as an electron transport medium to accelerate the transportation rate of photogenerated carriers, improve the light absorption capacity. The copolymerization with I-ABN introduce benzene rings and I − to g-C 3 N 4 , which enhance the light absorption capacity and photoelectric efficiency. The Z-scheme heterojunction effectively suppresses the recombination of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. Therefore, PC1–PC9 presented excellent performance for the degradation of BPA due to the synergistic effects of the above three points. Among them, PC6 showed the best photocatalytic activity, which completely degraded BPA (15 mg/L) within 40 min, and whose rate constant (0.091 min −1 ) was 22.8 times that of bulk g-C 3 N 4 . The active radical trapping experiment determined •O 2 − and h + were the main active radicals. Finally, the BPA degradation mechanism by PC6 was proposed. This study provides new insights for the combination of heterojunction, carbon dots, and copolymerization to rationally design efficient photocatalysts to restore the environment.
