To overcome the limitations of insufficient active sites and rapid charge recombination in conventional bismuth oxyhalide (BiOX) photocatalysts, we developed a novel CAU-17-derived strategy for constructing hollow tubular BiOX solid solutions with oxygen vacancies (OVs). The confined chemical environment in the CAU-17 precursor provides favorable conditions for the preparation of OVs-enriched BiOX solid solutions via a one-pot, low-temperature halogenation method. This method is applicable to the preparation of diverse BiOX solid solutions like BiOCl x Br 1-x and BiOBr x I 1-x . The CAU-17 halogenation simultaneously endows BiOX solid solutions with a hollow tubular architecture, an enhanced specific surface area, and residual organic carbon. The embedded carbon establishes conductive pathways that significantly enhance the migration efficiency of charge carriers. Importantly, the formation of solid solution can strengthen the intensity of inherent IEF between [X m ] layer and [Bi 2 O 2 ] layer, thereby enhancing the driving force for carrier separation. OVs, as electron traps, also contribute to improve the carrier separation efficiency. The hollow tubular structure and favorable carrier separation efficiency collectively empower OVs-BiOCl 0.5 Br 0.5 /C with superior visible-light activity, impressively degrading 90 % of Rhodamine B within 60 min primarily through •O 2 - and h + active species. This work supplies a versatile MOF-derived approach for the synthesis of hollow tubular BiOX solid solution with oxygen defect as high performance photocatalyst.

The rational construction of semiconductor heterojunctions with abundant active specific area and matched energy band alignment is vital to boosting photocurrent response in highly sensitive photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensors. Here, a molecularly imprinted PEC sensor is proposed based on a WO 3 /BiVO 4 heterojunction using CAU-17, a Bi-based metal-organic framework (MOF), as a structural control agent. Unlike the conventional embedding structure, in which WO 3 is covered by BiVO 4 or vice versa, this MOF-derived WO 3 /BiVO 4 hybrid comprises WO 3 nanoleaves and uniformly distributed BiVO 4 nanoparticles. This structure offers a comparatively large surface area, enhancing light adsorption and enhancing solid-solid and solid-liquid interfacial contact, thereby promoting photogenerated electron-hole separation, rapid charge transfer, and interfacial reaction. With the aid of molecular imprinting technology, the WO 3 /BiVO 4 -based PEC sensor is capable of quantitatively detecting amoxicillin, a frequently prescribed antibiotic in both human and veterinary medicine. This sensor exhibits broad linear range of 10 −3 –10 3 μmol L −1 , low detection limit of 2.4 × 10 −4 μmol L −1 , high specificity, reproducibility, and stability. Furthermore, it has significant practical potential for environmental pollution monitoring.

When used individually, ZIF-8 suffers from hydrolysis in aqueous media, while CAU-17 is limited by its low specific surface area (64.71 m²/g). Therefore, we employed an in situ self-assembly strategy to construct a MOF-on-MOF heterostructure (CAU-17@ZIF-8) for the synergistic removal of Cd(II) and methylene blue (MB). The composite achieved maximum adsorption capacities of 607.65 mg/g for Cd(II) and 1025.38 mg/g for MB, with a 99% removal efficiency for low-concentration pollutants in real wastewater. Even after five cycles, 75% efficiency was maintained. Mechanistic studies combining batch experiments, characterization, and DFT calculations revealed that the heterojunction interface promotes substantial charge transfer from CAU-17 to ZIF-8, significantly enhancing electrostatic attraction toward cations. Simultaneously, new mesopores formed at the interface increase the specific surface area (239.62 m 2 /g) and provide rapid mass-transfer channels. MB adsorption is governed by electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding, and π-π interactions, while Cd(II) adsorption relies on ion exchange, coordination, and electrostatic attraction. This work demonstrates that constructing MOF-on-MOF heterojunctions is a promising strategy to overcome the intrinsic limitations of single MOFs in water remediation, thereby greatly enhancing the adsorption capacity toward methylene blue (MB) and Cd(II).
