Chemical swelling and electrochemical oxidation are combined to realize the separation and recovery of carbon fibers from carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) at normal temperature and pressure. The results showed that the depolymerization rate of epoxy resin in CFRP increased with increasing ammonium acetate concentration and current density, and the influence of the current density was more significant than that of the concentration. Microscopic analysis showed that the recycled carbon fibers had few residual resin on their surfaces and mild electrochemical oxidation etching, and recycled carbon fiber monofilament achieved a tensile strength and an interfacial shear strength that were 93.55% and 118.76% those of the original fibers.

Ice accumulation on the surface of aircraft is a serious threat to flight safety and a fatal factor causing air accidents. However, traditional aircraft deicing methods no longer meet the requirements of safe flight due to changes in aircraft structural materials. In recent years, the application of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) materials in the aviation structure industry has increased. In this study, we demonstrate an economical, easy-to-prepare, and pollution-free approach to deice an aircraft through induction heating. The nickel-coated carbon fiber-reinforced polymer used as the induction heater for aircraft deicing is obtained by electroless nickel plating on the surface of the CFRP. The result shows that it takes just 110 s to achieve a temperature of 205 °C on the nickel-plated CFRP when the input voltage is 30 V, as well as melting the ice layer with a thickness of 30 mm, while the temperature of this material can reach up to 81 °C by electric heating when the input voltage is 1.5 V. Meanwhile, the nickel-plated CFRP exhibits good repeatability during the induction heating. Based on the excellent electrothermal properties, the nickel-plated CFRP polymer shows a prominent deicing ability, which provides a promising strategy for the deicing of aircraft.

The primary challenge of fiber metal laminates (FMLs) is the insufficient interfacial adhesion between metal and resin, which impedes the realization of the full potential. To address this issue, a two-step strategy has been proposed: firstly, via the cerium coordination-based approach, followed by grafting carbon nanotubes onto the titanium surface. This modification enhances the interfacial behavior between titanium sheets and polyetheretherketone (PEEK), resulting in increased roughness and wettability on the titanium surface, facilitating tight contact between PEEK and titanium sheets while reducing defects at the interface. Compared to CF/PEEK-sandblasted Ti, the modified CF/PEEK-Ti composites exhibit significantly enhanced interfacial shear strength, equivalent flexural strength, and interlaminate shear strength with an increase of 205.4 % (39.4 MPa), 133.3 % (1434.3 MPa) and 95.2 % (93.7 MPa), respectively. Additionally, the failure mode has shifted from interfacial failure to cohesive failure. The interface enhancement mechanism can be attributed to the synergistic effects of coordination bonding, mechanical interlocking, and multiple interactions. This facile two-step modification method demonstrates the potential to enhance the interfacial properties of CF/PEEK-Ti composites.

Epoxy vitrimer theoretically achieves an unlimited healing cycle drawing support from dynamic molecular chains. The healing conditions required for microvascular systems are variable and flexible. Current research has often focused on a single healing system, further exploration is needed for a dual healing system that combines the advantages of both. In this study, the effects of curing agent and catalyst content on the performances of vitrimer, as well as the healing parameters on the healing efficiency were studied. And then the vitrimeric CFRP (vCFRP) laminates with microchannels were prepared, and the three-point bending tests were implemented to characterize the healing efficiency of CFRP with a single and dual healing system. The results indicated that the cured vitrimer exhibited the best comprehensive performance when the molar ratio of reactants was 1:1:0.07. The healing temperature had the greatest impact on the healing efficiency of vitrimer, followed by the catalyst content and the healing pressure. The two healing systems could improve the mechanical properties of laminates, especially the healing efficiency of CFRP with dual healing system reached 134.5 %. The healing agent in the microchannels could heal micro-damage, and the healability of the vitrimer could still be utilized after the healing agent was exhausted.

Graphical A polymer compound, phenolphthalein polyether sulfone, with high glass transition temperature and modulus, due to cardo-ring and sulfone group improves the mechanical and thermal properties of epoxy resin and carbon fiber reinforced polymer. Electrospinning technology was applied, and nanoscale fiber nonwovens were prepared and used to enhance the interlayer properties of CFRP. This work investigated the thermo-mechanical properties of phenolphthalein polyether sulfone (PES-C) in toughening epoxy resin and CFRP, along with an analysis of toughening mechanisms. PES-C, a high-performance resin with a high glass transition temperature and modulus due to its specific cardo ring structure and sulfone group, was synthesized and incorporated into epoxy resin through physical blending to enhance the mechanical properties of the epoxy matrix. With the addition of 15 phr PES-C the impact strength increased by 72.71 %, and SEM analysis revealed a bi-continuous and island coexistence structure, with the toughening mechanism attributed to reaction-induced phase separation. The thermal performance was improved, with T d5% and T g increased using TGA and DMA analyses. Additionally, PES-C non-woven fabric was fabricated via electrospinning and integrated into EP/CF prepregs for interlayer toughening. G I, C, and G II, C of CFRP increased by 37.5 % and 134 %, respectively. The toughening mechanism could be attributed to the enhanced interlayer bonding strength provided by the PES-C non-woven fabric, which effectively mitigated fiber debonding. These two approaches demonstrated that PES-C exhibited excellent toughening effects on both epoxy resin and CFRP, offering significant application potential in the aerospace field.

To address the inadequate bonding strength between machined carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) and metal, this study investigates a novel precoating treatment utilizing organic nanoparticles. Leveraging the synergistic effect between the silane coupling agent (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APS) and polydopamine-chelated iron nanoparticles (PDA-Fe), a dense protective layer forms on the damaged CFRP surface. Single lap shear (SLS) tests demonstrated a significant 93 % increase in shear strength for joints with APS-(PDA-Fe) treated CFRP. Comparative studies with inorganic particles—multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), zinc oxide (ZnO), and silica (SiO 2 )—revealed that APS-(PDA-Fe) yielded the highest bonding strength enhancement for milled CFRP. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), surface wettability analysis, and microscopic morphology characterization elucidated the underlying mechanism: the formation of a protective encapsulating layer that repairs and reinforces damaged fibers, combined with abundant polar functional groups (e.g., hydroxyl, amino, quinone) in APS and PDA-Fe, which substantially enhance resin adhesion to the CFRP surface.

For improving interfacial interactions of Epoxy (EP)/carbon fiber (CFs) composites (CFRP), CFs were oxidized, while grapheme oxide (GO) layer was successfully grafted onto CFs surface through bridging effect of polydopamine (PDA) to obtain GO@PDA@CF hybrids, forming rough surface structure of CFs. The smaller epoxy contact angle of GO@PDA@OCFs indicated improving wettability between CFs/EP, while more and bigger EP fragments remained on interlaminar shear fracture surfaces, and CFs were embedded in matrix without obvious gap, indicating significantly enhanced interfacial bonding of composites by forming mechanical interlocking structure. The interfacial strength of composites was thus improved via effective transfer of stress between matrix-fiber at interface.

The vitrimeric CFRP (vCFRP) composites have gained widespread interest due to the healable ability of vitrimer matrix after damage. However, the inherent nature of laminated composite structures leaves them vulnerable to delamination. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been widely used as reinforcing materials in both thermosetting and thermoplastic composites due to their excellent properties, whereas their application in emerging vCFRP has rarely been reported. In this study, carboxyl-functionalized CNTs were introduced into the interlaminar region of vCFRP laminates to improve their delamination resistance. The influence of CNT loading on the mode II fracture toughness was subsequently evaluated on the basis of load-displacement responses, R -curves, crack growth characteristics, and fracture surface morphologies. The experimental results indicate that the addition of CNTs alters the crack propagation path and enhances interlaminar performance. Within the investigated CNT content range, the specimens with relatively low CNT loadings exhibit a reduction in mode II fracture toughness. As the CNT content continues to increase, the initial fracture toughness is progressively improved, whereas the steady-state fracture toughness first rises and then declines, with a peak increment of 33.47%. The fracture morphology indicates that CNTs restrain crack propagation and improve the delamination resistance of composites through CNT fracture, pull-out, and enhanced fiber bridging effect. These findings confirm the applicability of CNT interlaminar toughening strategies in self-healable vCFRP composites.

Interfacial toughening of sandwich structures was achieved by incorporating basalt fibers (BF). The optimal fiber content was first determined by evaluating five different compositions. Under three-point bending, the specimen containing 2 wt% BF demonstrated the most notable improvement, with peak load and absorbed energy increasing by 27.4% and 102.5%, respectively. To further enhance performance, three toughened interfaces were engineered using this optimal fiber content. Among these, the BF-GO hybrid treatment yielded superior results, achieving remarkable increases of 38.4% in peak load and 149% in energy absorption. This improvement is attributed to the synergistic effects of the APTES and GO treatments, which enhance the fiber's interfacial properties by improving wettability, increasing surface roughness, and introducing additional functional groups. These modifications promote mechanical interlocking and strengthen the fiber–resin interface. Consequently, this toughening strategy altered the structural failure mode, effectively suppressing interfacial debonding. Basalt fiber thus presents a cost-effective approach for interfacial toughening in CFRP/honeycomb sandwich structures, mitigating debonding issues and enhancing overall performance. Summary Optimal 2% basalt fiber with GO hybrid treatment boosts load and energy by 38.4% and 149%. Enhanced fiber/matrix interlocking and crack deflection mechanism suppresses debonding. Toughened interface shifts failure mode from debonding to structural fracture.

Carbon fiber-reinforced polymer composites are widely used in modern industry. However, poor heat transfer between layers of carbon fiber cloth during the curing process leading to poor curing of the substrate, long curing cycles, and excessive heat accumulation has become an urgent problem to be solved. A common approach is dispersing highly thermally conductive fillers in the polymer matrix to improve the curing efficiency of the composites. Different from adding fillers, we report a novel method of in situ growth of SiC nanowires (SiCNWs) on the surface of carbon fiber (CF) by the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method and study the effects of CVD deposition time on curing efficiency and thermal stability of the composites. The results indicate that the nano bridge effect of SiCNWs significantly improves the curing efficiency of the composites. Compared with pure CF/epoxy composites, the curing efficiency can be increased by 38.72%. The cross-linking point between SiCNWs and the resin matrix enhances the thermal stability of the composites and increases the heat resistance index (THRI) by 8.4°C.

In this study, graphene oxide (GO) was employed as nanoscale reinforcement for the development of high-performance carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites. Initially, epoxy resin was modified by incorporating GO with different weight proportion from 0.05 to 0.6 wt.%. Then the unidirectional CFRP composites were prepared with the modified epoxy resin by winding and compression molding technique. The optimized GO-CFRP composites with GO content of 0.1 wt.% present tensile strength of 2756 MPa and monofilament interfacial shear strength of 29.06 MPa, respectively, which are 14.4% and 12.5% higher than the corresponding values of the pristine CFRP composites. To intuitively observe the fracture process of the CFRP composites, the digital image correlation system was employed. It is verified that the moderate addition of GO can improve the stress concentration of the CFRP composites during the deformation process. In addition, the reinforcing mechanism is investigated by analyzing the fracture surface of the modified epoxy resin and the CFRP composites. The results indicate that GO can make the cracks deflect or bifurcate along with the epoxy resin which closes to graphene, resulting in synergistically improved mechanical and interfacial properties of the GO-modified CFRP composites.

Despite decades of development, the delamination damage of multidirectional laminates still accounts for a considerable proportion of the failure problems encountered in the actual industrial field. The internal cracks that are difficult to be repaired make composites show a disposable essence. Thus, self-healable carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) has attracted the attentions in recent years. Vitrimer is a polymer containing dynamic cross-linking networks, which could be repaired after damage without using extrinsic healing agents. However, vitrimeric CFRP (vCFRP) laminates are also inevitably susceptible to delamination damage like traditional thermosetting composites owing to the lack of reinforcements in the thickness direction, whereas the reports about delamination healing of vCFRP remains limited. In this study, a triepoxy was introduced into an existing epoxy system to synthesize the self-healable vitrimer based on transesterification . It showed that the polyfunctional groups could improve the mechanical properties and glass transition temperature ( T g ) of cured vitrimer, and laid a groundwork for engineering application . Then the effects of stacking interfaces on the interlaminar properties and the twice interlaminar healing efficiency of the unidirectional vCFRP were studied. The results indicated that the load-displacement curves, R -curves, fracture toughness , fiber bridging length, fiber bridging effect and crack growth behaviour were strongly influenced by the stacking interfaces. The interlaminar healing efficiencies of the specimens after two complete delamination failure exceeded 80%. Development of such dynamic polymer composites could provide meaningful guidelines for improving the reliability, safety and maintainability of structural materials.
