Ni3V2O8/CNFs composite electrodes for flexible supercapacitors with excellent cycling stability

Yuanjie Wei,Jian Zou,Hehe Ren,Jiaoyang Shen,Chenhong Xu,Jing Liang,Wei Wu

The emergence of Internet of Things (IoT) and wearable devices has driven demand for flexible and miniaturized supercapacitors. Screen printing, as an emerging technology, demonstrates strong vitality and enormous potential in the manufacturing of supercapacitors. Herein, the Ni 3 V 2 O 8 /carbon nanofibers (CNFs) composite electrode materials are prepared via hydrothermal pyrolysis, and its morphology, composition, oxidation states, and bonding information are carefully characterized. Electrochemical characterizations revealed that the Ni 3 V 2 O 8 /CNFs electrode exhibited outstanding performance, with a significant specific capacitance of 1645 F g −1 (1 A g −1 ). Furthermore, the electrode demonstrated remarkable cycling stability, with a capacitance retention of 80.4 % after 20,000 cycles, highlighting its excellent rate capability and robust pseudocapacitive properties. Subsequently, the screen-printing inks are formulated using as-prepared Ni 3 V 2 O 8 /CNFs, acetylene black, and ethyl cellulose. The flexible printed Ni 3 V 2 O 8 /CNFs//AC asymmetric supercapacitor exhibited an areal capacitance of 234.18 mF cm −2 (1 mA cm −2 ). After 15,000 charge-discharge cycles, it retained 76.73 % of its capacitance. The individual supercapacitor achieved a charging voltage of up to 1.60 V, and could power an LED bouquet for over 35 s. We anticipate that the printed supercapacitor will become a promising candidate for next-generation wearable and portable energy, storage systems.

Novel conductive polymer composites based on CNTs/CNFs bridged liquid metal

Xudong Pan,Dengji Guo,Hu He

Conductive polymer composites (CPCs) are vital and indispensable for the emerging field of soft electronics. In this work, a new strategy for using carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/carbon nanofibers (CNFs) and liquid metal droplets as multiphase hybrid fillers for CPCs is presented. We found that CPCs with multiphase hybrid conductive fillers had advantages in electromechanical properties over those with single solid-phase conductive fillers. CNTs/CNFs can easily form conductive paths in the polymer due to their excellent electrical conductivity with large aspect ratio. Self-repair of conductive networks was realized since the exposed Galinstan under strains could bridge the gap between CNTs/CNFs to form new conductive pathways. In addition, the influences of the size and content of conductive fillers on the electromechanical properties of CPCs were investigated. We found CPCs with liquid metals can be served as a flexible strain sensor under mild strain, while as a conductor under large strain due to the robust stability of resistance, which has not been reported yet in the literature. The CPCs presented in this work could provide potential applications in wearable electronics and flexible electronics.

Synthesis of Fe-CNFs and Mechanistic Insights into Carbon-Water Reaction

Wenqi Gao,Yuan Meng,Xinran Zhang,Liqiang Liu,Yunjie Zhang,Jin Zhou,Zifei Sun

Iron-based carbon nanofibers (Fe-CNFs) have garnered significant attention due to their promising applications as functional materials or precursors in the field of catalysis, energy storage, and electromagnetic interference shielding. In this work, electrospun Fe3O4-CNFs were reduced under a H2/Ar atmosphere to obtain Fe-CNFs, and the reduction temperature and holding time were systematically optimized. Notably, a pronounced carbon gasification phenomenon was observed at elevated temperatures (>550 °C), leading to a complete consumption of the carbon matrix. The underlying mechanism was explored using temperature-programmed reduction with mass spectrometry (TPR-MS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results suggest that the carbon gasification during the H2reduction process is primarily driven by the carbon-water reaction, which can be catalyzed by the in situ-formed Fe nanoparticles. As the temperature increases, various reactions—including hydrogen dissociation, H2spillover, carbon-water reaction, and Boudouard reaction—may progressively consume the carbon framework, ultimately leading to structural collapse and complete material loss. This study elucidates the underlying mechanism of carbon-water reaction and provides practical guidance for the optimization of synthesis parameters, thereby enhancing the yield and structural integrity of free-standing Fe-CNFs for their application in catalysis and energy storage-related fields.

Mo2C–CoNi heterostructure-knotted CNFs for efficient hydrogen and oxygen evolution reaction

Yingjie Ding,Chaoyang Zhu,Zezhong Xu,Wei Yang,Hongdian Lu,Kunhong Hu,Ping Chen,Jinsong Xie

Molybdenum carbide, with its platinum-like electrical properties, has emerged as a promising alternative to precious metal catalysts. However, the inefficiency of its synthesis and limited catalytic activity have severely hindered its widespread application. In this paper, a novel heterostructure composed of Mo 2 C and CoNi alloy nanoparticles was constructed and embedded in carbon nanofibers to form Mo 2 C–CoNi @CNFs by simple electrospinning technology and pyrolysis process, which serves as an efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The catalyst demonstrated low overpotentials of 128 mV for HER and 306 mV for OER at 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH, together with low Tafel slope values of 74.2 mV dec −1 and 72.4 mV dec −1 respectively, along with outstanding stability over 100 h. The remarkable catalytic activity and durability are all attributed to synergistic effect of multiple components and high electrical conductivity of carbon nanofibers. This work not only advances the understanding of Mo 2 C-based catalysts, but also offers a path towards more efficient and cost-effective catalysts for energy conversion processes.

Facile synthesis of graphene oxide-wrapped CNFs as high-performance microwave absorber

Xiaoxiao Zhang,Xiaogang Su,Bin Zhang,Jun Wang

Graphene oxide/carbon nanofibers hierarchical structures have been successfully synthesized through a modified Hummers method. Owing to the harsh chemical exfoliation and oxidation , graphene oxide (GO) appears on the outer walls of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) with the preservation of the 3D fibrous network. By adjusting the oxidation time, the obtained sample exhibited excellent electromagnetic (EM) attenuation performance with a maximum reflection loss of −49.82 dB at a thickness of 1.5 mm. Meanwhile, an effective bandwidth of 2.48 GHz was also investigated. The superior EM absorbing performance of GO/CNFs is ascribed to the hierarchical structure. While the inner carbon skeleton endows the material with desirable conductive network, GO exhibits a larger surface area with abundant functional groups and defects that give rise to multiple polarizations and relaxation processes. Moreover, the resistance-capacitance coupled circuits formed in the GO/CNFs network are beneficial for dissipating the incident waves. Prospectively, the synthetic strategy applied in this research can be extended to assemble GO on carbonaceous materials to fabricate novel microwave absorbers.

A multifunctional CNFs@MXene@ZnO hydrogel membrane for the efficient purification of wastewater

Dongxiao Liu,Zechen Yan,Jingyi Zhao,Daqian Zhuang,Yanrui Zhao,Xiaofang Li,Lei Zhu

Developing efficient hydrogel filtration membranes and eco-friendly sustainable water purification methods remain a global challenge. In this study, one convenient hydrogel filter system based on CNFs@MXene@ZnO (CMZ) has been constructed by the one-step injection approach. Herein, MXene nanosheets and ZnO nanoparticles are loaded onto a 3D interwoven CNFs skeleton, constructing a multifunctional superhydrophilic interface. The results demonstrate that the CMZ achieves exceptional separation efficiency (>98 %) and water flux (>1600 L·m⁻²·h⁻¹·bar −1 ) for oil/water emulsions, with notable suspended solids retention (>97.5 %) for oil/water/solid emulsions. The system versatility is further proven by the clean water production performance from complex natural environmental waters, including river water, sea water, and snowmelt. Notably, after the separation process, the CMZ system exhibits the significant photocatalytic properties to degrade the pollutants upon the membrane surface under ultraviolet light conditions. Moreover, when the CMZ reaches its service life, secondary contamination could be avoided by the biodegradation process of the fully bio-based CNFs, enabling the membrane to naturally degrade within 30 days. This study presents not only an eco-friendly and efficient water purification material for complex separation systems, but also a novel, convenient and outdoor water treatment device, advancing the technology for complex separation systems.

Hierarchical structure Fe@CNFs@Co/C elastic aerogels with intelligent electromagnetic wave absorption

Hongwei Zhou,Ying Lin,Yongzhen Ma,Luyao Han,Zhixin Cai,Yan Cheng,Qibin Yuan,Wenhuan Huang,Haibo Yang,Renchao Che

Developing intelligent electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption materials with real-time response-ability is of great significance in complex application environments. Herein, highly compressible Fe@CNFs@Co/C elastic aerogels were assembled through the electrospinning method, achieving EMW absorption through pressure changes. By varying the pressure, the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of Fe@CNFs@Co/C elastic aerogels shows continuous changes from low frequency to high frequency. The EAB of Fe@CNFs@Co/C elastic aerogels is 14.4 GHz (3.36–17.76 GHz), which covers 90% of the range of S/C/X/Ku bands. The theoretical simulation indicates that the external pressure prompts a reduction in the spacing between the fiber layers in the aerogels and facilitates the formation of a 3D conductive network with enhanced attenuation ability of EMW. The uniform distribution of metal particles and appropriate layer spacing can effectively optimize the impedance matching to achieve the best EMW absorption performance. This work state clearly that the hierarchically assembled elastic aerogels composed of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) derivatives and carbon fibers are ideal dynamic EMW absorption materials for intelligent EMW response.

Jia Hui Guo,Huan Liu,Yong Wang,YaNan Teng,XingWei Sun,Wei Yan Sun,Chun Ping Li,Jie Bai

The development of efficient, stable and low-cost dual-function electrocatalysts and applicated it to Zn-air batteries are very important for the development of renewable energy storage and conversion technologies. Antiperovskite catalysts have attracted much attention recently due to their advantages of adjustable structure and high element selectivity. In this work, a flexible and adjustable antiperovskite catalyst ZnCCe 3−x Ni x (0 ≤ x ≤ 3) loaded on carbon fiber (ZnCCe 3−x Ni x /CNFs) was prepared by electrospinning technology and used as an air cathode catalyst for rechargeable Zn-air batteries. By doping the X-site with highly conductive transition metal Ni, the electronic structure of the catalyst ZnCCe 3−x Ni x /CNFs was optimized, and the catalytic activity of the antiperovskite bimetallic X-site was tuned to achieve an efficient and synergistic catalytic reaction. Among them, ZnCCe 2.7 Ni 0.3 /CNFs showed excellent OER/ORR bi-functional catalytic activity (Δ E  = 0.82 V) and good stability. When ZnCCe 2.7 Ni 0.3 /CNFs is used as the cathode catalyst for rechargeable Zn-air batteries, it shows a power density of 117.99 mW cm −2 , and the cycle stability can be maintained for up to 300 h, indicating its application potential in the field of Zn-air batteries.

Electrospun Co/Co3SnC0.7@N-CNFs as free-standing anode for advanced lithium-ion batteries

Qingqing Han,Kunjie Zhu,Ting Jin,Zewen Yang,Yuchang Si,Yijing Wang,Lifang Jiao

Sn is considered as a promising anode for lithium-ion batteries due to its low cost and high theoretical capacity (992 mA h g −1 with Li 4.4 Sn). However, the volume expansion (∼300%) during lithiation/delithiation process can result in the continuous pulverization of active materials and exfoliation from current collector, deteriorating the capacity and cycling performance. Here Co/Co 3 SnC 0.7  N-doped carbon nanofibers are successfully synthesized by a feasible electrospinning method. And the materials as the self-standing anode for lithium-ion batteries reveal a high-rate performance as delivering reversible capacities of 480 mA h g −1 at 100 mA g −1 and 290 mA h g −1  at 2000 mA g −1 . In addition, the specific capacity can still maintain 320 mA h g −1  at 500 mA g −1 even after 900 cycles, showing the outstanding cycling stability. The inactive metal Co and one-dimensional N-doped carbon nanofibers synergistically promote the electrochemical performance of the Sn-based anode by inhibiting the aggregation of the nanoparticles and buffering volume variation during lithiation/delithiation process.

Hybrid TiO-TiO2 nanoparticle/B-N co-doped CNFs interlayer for advanced LiS batteries

Jinghui Zhu,Ya Liu,Liubiao Zhong,Jianyong Wang,Huanhui Chen,Sanfei Zhao,Yejun Qiu

Herein, a novel composite nanofiber , which consists of TiO-TiO 2 heterostructure nanoparticles and boron, nitrogen co-doped carbon nanofibers (BNCNF), has been successfully prepared through a facile electrospinning method. Remarkably, as interlayer for Li S batteries, the TiO-TiO 2 heterostructure not only enhances the adsorbability of the interlayer to lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) via the Lewis acid-base interactions, but also accelerates the redox reaction kinetics of the Li S batteries dramatically. Moreover, the BNCNF as a flexible framework can remit the volumetric change of the sulfur cathode, physically retard the migration of LiPSs and chemically adsorb to the LiPSs. Attributing to the synergistic effect of TiO-TiO 2 nanoparticle and BNCNF membrane, the Li S batteries with the novel composite interlayer (named as TiO-TiO 2 /BNCNF) exhibit outstanding cycling stability and high discharge capacity, especially at high current density. With the sulfur loading of 2.5 mg cm −2 , the cell with the TiO-TiO 2 /BNCNF interlayer delivers a high initial discharge capacity of 1014.7 mA h g −1 with a decay rate of 0.092% over 400 cycles at 0.5C, and also possesses excellent initial discharge capacity of 650.0 mA h g −1 with a decay rate of 0.068% over 120 cycles even at 2.0C.

Zhiping Su,Pu Wang,Caiyun Wang,Zuli Zheng,Haiyan Xu,Liping Ning

A sandwich-structured CNFs-CNTs/Ni:Co NWs composite film was prepared. • CNFs-CNTs/Ni:Co NWs film showed a high tensile strength of 45.9 MPa. • CNFs-CNTs/Ni:Co NWs film showed an EMI shielding effectiveness of 48.6 dB. • CNFs-CNTs/Ni:Co NWs film exhibited a thermal conductivity of 2.003 W·m⁻¹ ·K⁻¹ . With the increasingly serious electromagnetic pollution, the development of high-performance electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials has become an urgent demand. Herein, a sandwich-structured cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs)-carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/nickel-cobalt alloy nanowires (Ni:Co NWs) composite film (CNFs-CNTs/Ni:Co NWs) was developed via a vacuum-filtration layer-by-layer assembly strategy. The core layer (CNFs-CNTs) endowed CNFs-CNTs/Ni:Co NWs with good flexibility, high strength, and electrical conductivity. The two outer layers (Ni:Co NWs) further improved the electrical conductivity of CNFs-CNTs/Ni:Co NWs and enabled the magnetic conductivity of CNFs-CNTs/Ni:Co NWs. This unique sandwich structure made the resulting CNFs-CNTs (40%)/Ni:Co NWs a high EMI shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of 48.6 dB. The EMI absorption effectiveness (SE A ), EMI reflection effectiveness (SE R ), and green shielding index of CNFs-CNTs (40%)/Ni:Co NWs were 34.1 dB, 15.2 dB, and 2.3, respectively. The CNFs-CNTs (40%)/Ni:Co NWs also showed high strength (45.9 MPa) and good bending capability. Moreover, such CNFs-CNTs (40%)/Ni:Co NWs exhibited excellently thermal conductivity (2.003 W·m⁻¹·K⁻¹). This CNFs-CNTs (40%)/Ni:Co NWs represents a promising high-performance EMI shielding material. Download: Download high-res image (188KB) Download: Download full-size image
