In-situ synthesis of bi-metallic metal organic Framework/Polyaniline nanocomposites as ultrasensitive and selective electrodes for electrochemical detection of heavy metal ions

Nan Wang,Shangming Huang,Hanwei Cai,Xidong Lin,Riguo Mei,Ning Wang

Due to the toxicity of heavy metal ions which impacts on public health and the environment, the development of effective methods of detection has assumed a high priority. In this study, we have established an electrochemical sensor based on a CoCu-MOF/polyaniline (CoCu-MOF/PANI) sensing electrode that can simultaneously detect Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ in water samples. The CoCu-MOF/PANI composite was prepared by a one-step in situ polymerization method and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ content was detected by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) at an optimized pH (4.5). The proposed electrochemical sensor has achieved simultaneous Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ detection down to 0.39 ug/L (Pb 2+ ) and 0.61 ug/L (Cd 2+ ). Anti-interference and reproducibility experiments have been conducted. In spiking experiments, the recovery of Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ in water samples ranged from 98.6% to 102.13%, indicating effective targeted electrochemical sensing. This work has delivered a functional design of CoCu-MOF/PANI materials, and established an efficient methodology for heavy metal ion detection.

Understanding the surface segregation behavior of bimetallic CoCu toward HMF oxidation reaction

Yanwei Zhu,Jianqiao Shi,Yingying Li,Yuxuan Lu,Bo Zhou,Shuangyin Wang,Yuqin Zou

Surface segregation is ubiquitous in multi-component materials and is of great important for catalysis but little is known on the surface structure under graphene encapsulation. Here, we show that the graphene encapsulated CoCu performs well for the electrocatalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) with the onset potential before 1.23 V RHE and a nearly 100% selectivity of FDCA under 1.4 V RHE . From the experimental results, the unprecedented catalytic performance was attributed to local structural distortion and sub-nanometer lattice composition of the CoCu surface. We accurately show the dispersed Cu doped Co 3 O 4 nano-islands with a lot of edge sites on the bimetallic Co-Cu surface. While, the gradient components effectively facilitate the establishment of built-in electric field and accelerate the charge transfer. Theoretical and experimental results reveal that the surface Co and neighbouring Cu atoms in sub-nanometer lattice synergistically promote the catalysis of HMF. This work offers new insights into surface segregation in tuning the element spatial distribution for catalysis.

P-doped CoCu aerogel as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for efficient overall water splitting

Hongchen Liu,Fan Yang,Zhusong Xu,Xingru Yan,Fengjiang Chen,Chong Xu,Sai Che,Yongfeng Li

The exploration of bifunctional transition metal-based catalysts for water electrolysis is important for clean and large-scale production of hydrogen but yet remains challenging. Herein, a novel phosphorous doped cobalt-copper aerogel (P-CoCu) with three-dimensional interconnected structure was prepared via spontaneous gelation and in-situ P doping process. The electronic structure and charge density of Co could be modulated upon alloying with Cu, resulting in optimized charge transfer efficiency and proton adsorption energy. The hydrophilicity and the bond strength of H* were further optimized through P doping, which promoted the reaction efficiency on the surface of P-CoCu. Besides, the unique porous morphology of aerogel endowed the catalyst with efficient mass transfer pathways and abundant active sites. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further revealed the electron redistribution and the optimization of H 2 desorption performance through Cu alloying and P doping. Based on the outstanding features, the optimized P-CoCu sample achieved extremely low overpotentials of 74/224 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) / oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at a current density of 10 mA·cm −2 in 1 M KOH electrolyte. Additionally, a two-electrode electrolytic cell assembled with P-CoCu only required an operating voltage of 1.57 V at 10 mA·cm −2 with decent stability, which was comparable to commercial noble-metal catalysts (Pt/C//RuO 2 /C) and superior to recently published electrocatalyst. This work provides an anticipated perspective of non-noble metal-based bifunctional catalysts for overall water splitting.

Biotemplated construction of CoCu/Bio-CeO2 for efficiently boosting the tandem hydrogenation of nitroaromatics

Zhiyong Fu,Xusheng Yang,Sirong Zhao,Shun Hu,Changsong Chen,Bin Xu,Zhen Xiang,Weidong Jiang

Tea pollen-template fabricated Bio-CeO₂ served as a support for developing the supported CoCu-based bimetallic catalysts (CoCu/Bio-CeO₂). The catalytic performance of the as-prepared CoCu/Bio-CeO₂ catalysts was evaluated in the tandem hydrogenation of nitroaromatic compounds. The templated Bio-CeO₂ support not only successfully replicates the natural porous structure of tea pollen, but also induces the catalyst reconstruction and compositional differentiation. In contrast to non-templated or sole metallic analogues, Bio-CeO 2 -supported CoCu-based nanocatalysts endow more promising catalytic performance. The one selected Co₁Cu₄/Bio-CeO₂ exhibited excellent reactivity, achieving a hydrogen production rate (HGR) of 422.2 mL·min⁻¹·gcat⁻¹ and a nearly 99% yield of m-chloraniline (m-CAN) in the in-situ hydrogenation of m-chloronitrobenzene (m-CNB) under mild conditions. High activity was remained accompanying with over 87% yield of m-CAN after six runs. Co₁Cu₄/Bio-CeO₂ displayed superior activity and good substrate adaptability in the tandem hydrogenation of aromatic nitro compounds bearing various functional groups. The high stability and desired catalytic performance of Co₁Cu₄/Bio-CeO₂ shall be attributed to intermetallic synergistic effect as well as strong interaction between active metal and the Bio-CeO₂ support.

Tuning the electronic structure of bimetallic CoCu clusters for efficient hydrolysis of ammonia borane

Yufeng Chen,Kang Wang,Kaiqi Nie,Jiaou Wang,Shifeng Wang,Kun Feng,Jun Zhong

Efficient and low cost catalysts for the hydrogen production from ammonia borane (AB) are highly required to build up the upcoming hydrogen economy. Here we demonstrated that the non-active material could be directly transformed to highly active catalyst for the hydrolysis of AB when the surface parts were stripped to form tiny clusters on graphene oxide (GO), with the presence of strong cluster-support interaction. Moreover, the catalytic activity can be greatly enhanced by further tuning the electronic structure of clusters with various compositions. As a result, the final bimetallic CoCu catalyst on GO can achieve a high total turnover frequency (TOF) value of 72.4 (H 2 ) mol/(Cat-metal) mol·min with an activation energy of 47.8 kJ/mol, which is over 3 times higher than the monometallic clusters on GO. The cluster-support interaction has been clearly identified by synchrotron radiation X-ray absorption spectroscopy. An internal charge transfer from Cu to Co in the clusters can also be identified, which will weaken the B-N bond in AB and then effectively accelerate the hydrolysis of AB to achieve the high performance.

Niobium oxide supported CoCu catalyst for electrooxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural: Bimetallic synergy and interface engineering

Yuhui Huang,Yehan Tao,Xifan Yuan,Jinwen Hu,Jian Du,Chenglong Fu,Jie Lu,Yanna Lv,Haisong Wang

Cobalt-based catalysts have demonstrated significant potential for the selective electrooxidation of biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) into high-value 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). However, monometallic systems suffer from sluggish redox kinetics of cobalt species and insufficient reactant adsorption. In this study, we address these limitations by constructing a niobium oxide-supported cobalt‑copper bimetallic catalyst (CoCu/Nb₂O₅), leveraging bimetallic synergy and interface engineering to enhance catalytic activity. The incorporation of copper species facilitates efficient electron transfer between cobalt species of different valence states, while the Nb₂O₅ support strengthens electronic interactions with 5-HMF molecules and enables lattice oxygen participation in the reaction. Furthermore, the porous structure of the support improves bimetallic dispersion and provides enhanced mass transport pathways. The optimized CoCu/Nb₂O₅ catalyst achieves complete 5-HMF conversion and a remarkable 98.3 % FDCA yield at 1.4 V vs RHE, alongside excellent stability and reusability. Additionally, the catalyst demonstrates versatility by efficiently converting furfural into furoic acid, another biomass-derived platform molecule. This work offers valuable insights for designing advanced cobalt-based electrocatalysts and promotes the valorization of biomass resources.

Densely Stacked CoCu-MOFs Coated with CuAl/LDH Enhance Sulfamethoxazole Degradation in PMS-Activated Systems

Xin Zhong,Xiaojun Liu,Meihuan Ji,Fubin Jiang

As the most promising techniques for refractory antibiotic degradation in wastewater management, sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) have attracted considerable attention. However, systematic studies on potassium peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation by MOF-derived metal oxides coated with LDH materials are still lacking. In this work, a series of catalysts consisting of CoCu-MOFs coated with CuAl/LDH were synthesized for PMS activation in the removal of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). As expected, CoCu-MOFs coated with CuAl/LDH catalyst showed high SMX removal and stability in PMS activation. In the CoCu/LDH/PMS reaction, the SMX removal was nearly 100% after 60 min, and the mineralization reached 53.7%. The catalyst showed excellent catalytic stability and low metal leaching concentrations (Co: 0.013 mg/L, Cu: 0.313 mg/L), as detected by ICP. Sulfate radicals and hydroxyl radicals were identified as the dominant reactive species in the CoCu/LDH/PMS system. Moreover, the presence of 1 O 2 in the process revealed the coupling of non-radical and radical processes. The XPS results showed that the layered structure of CoCu/LDH promoted the recycling of metal ions (high and low valence), which facilitated heterogeneous PMS activation. The effects of different reaction conditions and reuse cycles were also determined. The SMX oxidation pathways were proposed based on the intermediates identified by LC/MS. The high activity and stability of CoCu/LDH provide a new mechanistic understanding of PMS activation catalysts and their potential utilization in practical wastewater treatment.

Efficient hydrogen production from ammonia borane hydrolysis catalyzed by P-doped-TiO2 supported CoCu catalysts

Yuqian Ma,Yang Li,Yaling Zeng,Yunxiao Wen,Xiaofei Li,Zhendong Ouyang,Guanghua Cai,Jian Yang,Ximei Fan

The efficiency of transition metal catalysts for ammonia borane (AB) hydrolysis is frequently constrained by the kinetic barriers of water activation and strong intermediate binding. In this study, surface-confined P-doped TiO 2 catalysts loaded with CoCu alloy were synthesized via an in-situ chemical reduction strategy. The resulting Co 3 Cu/0.1P-TiO 2 -85 catalyst delivers a competitive turnover frequency (TOF) of 47.27   min -1 at 25 ℃ and a low activation energy of 38.65   kJ   mol -1 , surpassing most existing counterparts. Characterization results confirm the formation of CoCu alloys and the TiO 2 support significantly improves cyclic stability, while P-doping modifies the surface electronic structure to enhance water adsorption. Theoretical calculations further identify that the synergistic metal-support interactions between the P-doped TiO 2 and the alloy modulate the d-band center of the catalyst to an optimized level of -2.07   eV. This electronic reconfiguration concurrently enhances water adsorption capacity while mitigating the strong binding of AB, thereby significantly boosting the hydrolytic dehydrogenation performance. This work provides new ideas and insights for enhancing the hydrogen evolution performance of transition metal catalysts in the aqueous decomposition of AB.

Direct conversion of CO2 to long-chain hydrocarbon fuels over K–promoted CoCu/TiO2 catalysts

Zhibiao Shi,Haiyan Yang,Peng Gao,Xiaopeng Li,Liangshu Zhong,Hui Wang,Hongjiang Liu,Wei Wei,Yuhan Sun

A series of TiO 2 supported Co–Cu catalysts with the weight percent of potassium oxides ranged from 0 to 3.5   wt.% were synthesized. This work investigates the influence of potassium promoter on CO 2 hydrogenation to long-chain (C 5+ ) hydrocarbons. The introduction of suitable amount of K into the CoCu/TiO 2 catalyst remarkably promoted the formation of C 5+ hydrocarbons and suppressed methane formation. The temperature-program desorption measurements demonstrate that the addition of K increases the chemisorption of CO 2 , whereas H 2 adsorption is decreased, which enhanced production of liquid fuels. However, these effects were not obvious with the addition of excess amount of K due to the slight change of surface K content. A maximum C 5+ yield with CO 2 conversion of 13% and C 5+ selectivity of 35.1 C-mol% is obtained over the CoCu/TiO 2 catalyst with 2.5   wt.% of potassium promoter loading, which also exhibits a substantial stability.

An efficient biosensor using a functionalized microneedle of Cu2O-based CoCu-LDH for glucose detection

Jialei Zhu,Fuqin Wang,Jiaying Chen,Chang Liu

Glucose detection with small and micro volume sampling has recently received increasing attention in monitoring personal health. Herein, a cauliflower-type cluster of Cu2O nanoparticles (NPs) was directly deposited on the tip surface of a stainless steel acupuncture needle electrode (ANE) by electrochemical deposition, and then this pre-formed cuprous basis was used to further prepare the neatly arranged CoCu-layered double hydroxide (CoCu-LDH) nanosheets that interconnected to form nano-sized pores in the range from 100 to 500 nm. The microstructure and spectral characteristics of the surface modification materials were comprehensively characterized by FE-SEM, EDS, XRD, FT-IR and TEM. Cu2O-based CoCu-LDH composites with special morphology had been proven to accelerate the rate of electron transport and provide more available active centers, and moreover, the mixed valence of Cu/Co induced an excellent synergism for the electrocatalytic oxidation of glucose. As a result, CoCu-LDH/Cu2O/ANE as a sensitive glucose probe exhibited two wider linear ranges of 0.03–0.40 mM and 0.40–6.00 mM, with sensitivities of 116.13 μA mM−1 and 52.08 μA mM−1, respectively, and the detection limit as low as 0.46 μM (S/N = 3). The response time only took 3 s and it kept working stably in the interference of ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA), uric acid (UA), and Cl−. In the stability test, the CoCu-LDH/Cu2O/ANE sensor exhibited a stable monitoring sensitivity after 15 days. Finally, the CoCu-LDH/Cu2O/ANE sensor had been successfully applied to glucose analysis in human serum, proving that our design was an attractive strategy for developing a portable, minimally invasive, and low-cost non-enzymatic electrochemical glucose sensing platform.

Highly Efficient Pt Decorated CoCu Bimetallic Nanoparticles Protected in Silica for Hydrogen Production from Ammonia–Borane

Yuzhen Ge,Zameer Hussain Shah,Xi-Jie Lin,Rongwen Lu,Zhangming Liao,Shufen Zhang

Pt decorated CoCu bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) coated by silica (Pt-CoCu@SiO2) were synthesized for efficient catalytic hydrogen production from hydrolysis of ammonia–borane (NH3·BH3; AB). Initially, silica-coated CoCu bimetallic NPs (CoCu@SiO2) were prepared by a modified co-reduction method from reverse microemulsion. Further, Pt-CoCu@SiO2 was obtained by a facile spontaneous displacement reaction by using CoCu@SiO2 and H2PtCl6 as the starting materials. The catalytic activity of Pt on bimetallic support was compared to that of monometallic supports, i.e., Co and Cu. The results of catalytic experiments showed that the support of CoCu bimetal can significantly enhance the activity of Pt as compared to that of pure Cu or Co. An impressive turnover frequency (TOF) value of 272.8 molH2 molPt–1 min–1 was achieved at the hydrolysis temperature of 30 °C for Pt-CoCu@SiO2. The detailed formation process of catalysts was described, and the samples were characterized by TEM, STEM, XPS, EDS element mapping, etc.

Higher alcohols synthesis from syngas over CoCu/SiO2 catalysts: Dynamic structure and the role of Cu

Junjie Su,Zhengpai Zhang,Donglong Fu,Da Liu,Xin-Chao Xu,Bianfang Shi,Xu Wang,Rui Si,Zheng Jiang,Jing Xu,Yi-Fan Han

A comparative study of higher alcohols synthesis directly from syngas has been performed over monometallic Co and bimetallic CoCu/SiO 2 catalysts. Particularly, the role of Cu on the origin of active sites and reaction mechanism were investigated thoroughly using multiple techniques such as ex situ X-rays diffraction (XRD), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and Raman spectroscopy. Reduction process of CoCu/SiO 2 catalysts was also determined using in situ XRD and in situ Raman spectroscopy while the surface structure of reduced catalysts was detected by CO-DRIFTS. CoCu bimetallic particles covered by Cu atoms are responsible for alcohols synthesis. The intrinsic kinetics was performed over both catalysts under realistic reaction conditions. By comparing the kinetic parameters, including apparent activation energies and reaction orders, the promotional effects of Cu have been identified as: (1) weakening the CO/HCO dissociation and reducing the formation of CH x species; (2) controlling surface Co ensemble size and inhibiting CH x insertion.
