A type of novel macromolecular colloid was prepared from gadolinium-based poly( l -succinimide) and gold nanoparticles (GNPs) with Au S covalent bonds. The colloid displayed improved stability in aqueous media and regular arrays in partial region. Moreover, these materials enhanced the contrast 9 times more than that of the corresponding uncoated Au compound when the Au mass content was only 0.15%. Therefore, these materials might have potential as dual-modality contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT).

Photothermal therapy (PTT) has attracted great attention as an anticancer treatment strategy. With the rapid development of nanomedicine, multifunctional inorganic nanophotothermal agents provide a new way to improve the effect of PTT. Herein, bovine serum albumin (BSA)-modified Bi nanosheets (Bi NSs) with good biocompatibility were synthesized by a facile redox and ball milling method and applied as a photothermal agent for the enhancement of PTT. Owing to the strong near-infrared absorption, Bi NSs exhibit high photothermal conversion efficiency (η = 36.17%) under 808 nm laser irradiation and can serve as a nanotherapeutic agent for cancer therapy. In addition, in vitro cell safety analysis also suggests that the toxicity of BSA-modified Bi NSs is negligible. Upon 808 nm irradiation, the uptake ability of tumor cells to Bi NSs@BSA has been improved. Moreover, Bi NSs@BSA also can be used as a good contrast agent for CT imaging and then to observe the distribution of materials in the tumor site. Finally, Bi NSs@BSA-mediated PTT results show a high ablation rate of A549 tumor cells both in vitro and in vivo. All results reveal that Bi NSs@BSA is a promising nanotherapeutic platform for PTT.

Background Blend sign on initial computed tomography (CT) is associated with poor outcome in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). However, the mechanisms underlying the blend sign formation are poorly understood. The present study aimed to explore the possible mechanism of the CT blend sign in patients with ICH. Methods Seventy healthy rabbits were selected to prepare an ICH model. The animals were assigned to a whole blood group + whole blood group (ww group, 50 rabbits), a whole blood + plasma group (wp group, 10 rabbits) or a whole blood + serum group (ws group, 10 rabbits). The animals of the ww group were allocated to five subgroups based on the interval between the first infusion of blood and the second one. The subgroups included ww 1 h group (with an interval of 1 h), ww 2 h group, ww 3 h group, ww 4 h group and ww 5 h group. The rabbits from each group received first infusion of 0.3 mL of whole blood into the basal ganglia area to form a hematoma. Then, they received a second infusion of the same amount of whole blood, plasma or serum into the brain to form another hematoma adjacent to the first one. Results A hematoma with two densities on brain CT could be formed in each group after a second infusion of blood into the brain. A significant difference in CT attenuation values was observed between the hyperattenuation and the hypoattenuation in all the groups. However, only the morphological features of the hematoma in the ww group was in accordance with the CT blend sign observed in humans. The CT attenuation values in the hypodensity area of the ww 4 h group or the ww 5 h group were decreased compared with the ww 1 h group to the ww 3 h group. Conclusions The CT blend sign observed in humans might be composed of two parts of blood with different ages. The hypodense area might be blood with older age and the hyperdense area might be new bleeding.

Objectives To explore the feasibility of using sodium iodide (NaI)+dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)+ethyl alcohol+ethyl acetate as a cone-beam CT (CBCT) contrast agent in the diagnosis of vertical root fracture (VRF). Methods 21 endodontically treated VRF teeth of 21 patients were collected in this study. All these 21 teeth were confirmed subtle fracture lines under transillumination, the number and position of fracture lines were recorded. All these patients had CBCT routine scanning (RS1) before extraction. After extraction, the teeth was performed micro-CT scanning and 3 in vitro CBCT scanning: CBCT routine scanning in vitro (RS2), CBCT enhanced scanning using meglumine diatrizoate (MD) as contrast agent(ES1); and CBCT enhanced scanning using NaI+DMSO+ethyl alcohol+ethyl acetate as contrast agent(ES2). The number of fracture lines was evaluated on all the 5 scanning modes and the accuracy of diagnosis was calculated. Results In all, there were 43 fracture lines on the 21 teeth. The accuracy of detection of fracture lines of CBCT RS1, RS2, ES1, ES2 and micro-CT was 0%, 20.9% (9/43), 11.6% (5/43), 93% (40/43) and 95.3% (41/43) respectively. Significant differences were found between ES2 vs. RS2, ES2 vs. ES1 ( p < 0.01); however, no significant difference was found between ES2 vs. micro-CT ( p > 0.05). Conclusion CBCT enhanced scanning using NaI+DMSO+ethyl alcohol+ethyl acetate as contrast agent could be a prospective technique in the diagnosis of VRF.

Aim This study aimed to develop a novel tumor-bearing tissue phantom model that can be used for US/CT/MR-guided tumor puncture and thermal ablation. Methods The phantom model comprised two parts: a normal tissue-mimicking phantom and a tumor-mimicking phantom. A normal tissue phantom was prepared based on a polyacrylamide gel mixed with thermochromic ink. Moreover, a spherical phantom containing contrast agents was constructed and embedded in the tissue phantom to mimic a tumor lesion. US/CT/MR imaging features and thermochromic property of the phantom model were characterized. Finally, the utility of the phantom model for imaging-guided microwave ablation training was examined. Results The tumor phantom containing contrast agents showed hyper-echogenicity, higher CT numbers, and lower T2 signal intensity compared with the normal tissue phantom in US/CT/MR images. Consequently, we could locate the position of the tumor in US/CT/MR imaging and perform an imaging-guided tumor puncture. When the temperature reached the threshold of 60 °C, the phantom exhibited a permanent color change from cream white to magenta. Based on this obvious color change, our phantom model could clearly map the thermal ablation region after thermotherapy. Conclusions We developed a novel US/CT/MR-imageable tumor-bearing tissue model that can be used for imaging-guided tumor puncture and thermal ablation. Furthermore, it allows visual assessment of the ablation region by analyzing the obvious color change. Overall, this phantom model could be a good training tool in the field of thermal ablation.

Carbon dots (CDs) are emerging as powerful nanoprobes for multiple-model bioimaging. Nowadays, orthotopic xenograft models attract increasing attention because of their superiorities of duplicating the tumor microenvironment . However, compared with the extensive study of subcutaneous xenograft tumors , less attention has been paid to CDs for in vivo orthotopic tumor imaging . Furthermore, it is very desirable for a nanoprobe to achieve preferential accumulation at the tumor site and efficient renal clearance . In this work, a novel kind of Hafnium-doped CDs (HfCDs) were successfully prepared via a simple one-pot pyrolysis method. The significant advantages including robust stability, good biocompatibility , excellent water solubility, remarkable computed tomography (CT) contrast performance and preferential tumor accumulation capability endow HfCDs with particular functions of CT/fluorescence imaging of orthotopic liver cancer initially. More importantly, HfCDs could locate at the tumor site and achieve the rapid imaging within 1 min. The findings of the current study represent a facile and universal approach to fabricate outstanding renal clearable multimodal imaging nanoprobes with great potential for clinical diagnosis.

In this study, a new method for synthesizing Ag-NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+@ SiO2nanocomposites was introduced. Using a hydrothermal method, the synthesized Yb3+- and Er3+-codoped NaYF4up-conversion luminescent materials and Ag nanoparticles were doped into up-conversion nanomaterials and coated with SiO2up-conversion nanomaterials. This material is known as Ag-UCNPs@SiO2, it improves both the luminous intensity because of the doped Ag nanoparticles and has low cytotoxicity because of the SiO2coating. The morphology of UCNPs was observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the mapping confirmed the successful doping of Ag nanoparticles. Successful coating of SiO2was confirmed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Fluorescence spectra were used to compare changes in luminescence intensity before and after doping Ag nanoparticles. The reason for the increase in luminescence intensity after doping with Ag nanoparticles was simulated using first-principles calculations. The cytotoxicity of Ag-UCNPs@SiO2was tested via the cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) method, and its imaging ability was characterized using the micro-CT method.Keywords:up-conversion;nanomaterials;CT imaging

Near-infrared responsive photothermal therapy is an emerging and non-invasive cancer treatment. However, the inability of real-time imaging tracking and monitoring for the photothermal agents (PTAs) severely limits the accuracy of treatment. In this study, a series of visual xGd-WO 3 @PEG PTAs were synthesized by a one-pot solvothermal method. The effect of different Gd doping amounts on the structure, morphology, and photothermal performance has been investigated in detail. Under the near-infrared laser irradiation, the samples exhibited satisfied photothermal properties of hyperthermia in a short time. The photothermal conversion efficiency and stability of the xGd-WO 3 @PEG (x = 7 %) were further investigated. Subsequently, the near-infrared thermal and CT imaging performance was studied. The in vitro cell viability on LO2 normal and 4T1 cancer cells have also been conducted. The results showed the xGd-WO 3 @PEG nanomaterials have excellent potential in imaging-guided photothermal cancer therapy.

Urchin-shaped Bi2S3/Cu2S/Cu3BiS3 nanocomposites were successfully prepared in this study through one-pot synthesis, which involved microwave-assisted simultaneous pyrolysis of two precursors. The as-prepared Bi2S3/Cu2S/Cu3BiS3 hybrids exhibit stronger absorption in the near-infrared regime than the individual components, i.e., Bi2S3, Cu2S, and Cu3BiS3. The photothermal conversion efficiency (η) of Bi2S3/Cu2S/Cu3BiS3 composites can even reach 43.8%, which is significantly higher than that seen with most of the transition metal chalcogenide materials. The excellent photothermal performance of Bi2S3/Cu2S/Cu3BiS3 hybrids is likely arising from its unique urchin-like structure, in which needle-like Bi2S3/Cu2S nanocomposites grow from the core of Cu3BiS3. The copresence of Bi2S3 and Cu2S also leads this newly synthesized composite to produce high contrast for X-ray computer tomography imaging, an important property required for a great potential application in theranostic cancer treatment.

Objective This study aims to investigate the influence of fluoride exposure on implant osseointegration. Methods A total of 24 male New Zealand white rabbits were randomly divided into the control group and the fluoride exposure group. Rabbits in the control group were fed with tap water, while those in the fluoride exposure group were given 200 mg/L sodium fluoride solution. After 2-month feeding, implants were inserted into the extraction socket immediately after extraction of rabbit mandibular anterior teeth. Four rabbits in each group were sacrificed to collect the implants samples at 1, 2, and 3 months post-implantation, respectively. Radiographic and histomorphometry examinations were performed to evaluate the condition of implant osseointegration. Results Bone volume around the implants increased in a time-dependent manner in both groups. Micro-CT images illustrated that the bone mineral density (BMD) in the fluoride exposure group was significantly lower than that in the control group after implantation for 2 and 3 months. The bone–implant contact ratio (BIC) in the fluoride exposure group was much lower than that of the control group at 3 months post-implantation according to histomorphometry examination. Conclusions In rabbit animal model, high fluoride exposure affected the quality of bone surrounding the implant and significantly reduced bone integration of the implant, especially in the late stage of osseointegration.

We report a new usage of folic acid-modified dendrimer-entrapped gold nanoparticles (Au DENPs-FA) as nanoprobes for in vitro and in vivo targeted computed tomography (CT) imaging of human lung adencarcinoma. In this study, Au DENPs prepared using amine-terminated generation 5 poly(amidoamine) dendrimers as templates were covalently linked with FA, followed by an acetylation reaction to neutralize the remaining dendrimer surface amines. The formed Au DENPs-FA was used for both in vitro and in vivo targeted CT imaging of human lung adencarcinoma cells (SPC-A1 cells) and the xenograft tumor model, which express folic acid receptors (FAR) verified by immunohistochemical staining. Micro-CT images show that SPC-A1 cells can be detected under X-ray after incubation with the Au DENPs-FA in vitro and the xenograft tumor model can be imaged after intravenous, intratumoral, and intraperitoneal administration of the particles. Transmission electron microscopy data confirm that the Au DENPs-FA is able to be uptaken dominantly in the lysosomes of the cells. Combined morphological observation of cells after Hematoxylin and Eosin staining, MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay of cell viability , and flow cytometric analysis of cell cycle and apoptosis show that the Au DENPs-FA does not affect cell morphology , viability, and cell cycle and apoptosis, indicating their good biocompatibility at the given concentration range. These findings suggest that the developed Au DENPs-FA have a great potential to be used as imaging probes for targeted CT imaging of human lung adencarcinoma.

Oral cancer is the most common malignant tumor in the oral and maxillofacial region, which seriously threatens the health of patients. At present, radiotherapy is one of the commonly used methods for oral cancer treatment. However, the resistance of cancerous tissues to ionizing radiation, as well as the side effects of X-rays on healthy tissues, still limit the application of radiotherapy. Therefore, how to effectively solve the above problems is still a challenge at present. Generally speaking, elements with high atomic numbers, such as bismuth, tungsten, and iodine, have a high X-ray attenuation capacity. Using nanomaterials containing these elements as radiosensitizers can greatly improve the radiotherapy effect. At the same time, the modification of nanomaterials based on the above elements with the biocompatible polymer can effectively reduce the side effects of radiosensitizers, providing a new method for the realization of efficient and safe radiotherapy for oral cancer. In this work, we prepared Tween-20-modified BiVO4 nanorods (Tw20-BiVO4 NRs) and further used them in the radiotherapy of human tongue squamous cell carcinoma. Tw20-BiVO4 NRs are promising radiosensitizers, which can generate a large number of free radicals under X-rays, leading to the damage of cancer cells and thus playing a role in tumor therapy. In cell experiments, radiotherapy sensitization of Tw20-BiVO4 NRs significantly enhanced the production of free radicals in oral cancer cells, aggravated the destruction of chromosomes, and improved the therapeutic effect of radiotherapy. In animal experiments, the strong X-ray absorption ability of Tw20-BiVO4 NRs makes them effective contrast agents in computed tomography (CT) imaging. After the tumors are located by CT imaging, it helps to apply precise radiotherapy; the growth of subcutaneous tumors in nude mice was significantly inhibited, confirming the remarkable effect of CT imaging-guided radiotherapy.
