In the past few decades, uranium (235, 238U(VI)) has turned into a forefront environmental issue due to its extensive use in the nuclear industry and its toxicity and radioactivity. Herein, nanoscale zero valent iron (nZVI), which was supported on Ca–Mg–Al-layered double hydroxide (Ca–Mg–Al-LDH/nZVI), was fabricated via an in situ growth route and employed for U(VI) decontamination from aqueous solutions. Spectroscopy and microscopy (SEM, TEM, FTIR, XRD, BET, and XPS) technologies were applied for the investigation of the properties of Ca–Mg–Al-LDH/nZVI and the U(VI) elimination mechanism. Ca–Mg–Al-LDH/nZVI had a remarkable BET surface (426.8 m2 g−1), abundant functional groups (i.e., Fe–O, Al–O, –OH, etc.), high efficiency (4 h to achieve equilibrium) and large adsorption capacities (Qmax = 216.1 mg g−1) for U(VI) removal. The decontamination process of U(VI) was observed to be pH-dependent and ionic strength-independent, suggesting that the adsorption was predominated by inner-sphere surface coordination. XPS spectroscopy analyses indicated that the reduction and adsorption of nZVI and the adsorption of Ca–Mg–Al-LDH dominated U(VI) elimination on Ca–Mg–Al-LDH/nZVI. The environmentally friendly synthesis method, excellent physicochemical properties and remarkable removal performance suggested that Ca–Mg–Al-LDH/nZVI was applicable as a potential adsorbent for U(VI) decontamination from wastewater in environmental pollution remediation.

MSL255 was synthesized as a pyridyl ligand for Ni/Co extraction. • D2EHPA–MSL255 gave β(Ni/M) > 249 and β(Co/M) > 41 over impurities. • Over 99% of Ca, Mg and Mn was removed with minimal Ni loss. • Co and Ni were stepwise stripped at different acidities. • FT-IR, MS and DFT revealed selective Ni/Co coordination. Complex acidic Ni/Co liquors from low-grade ores and secondary resources usually contain abundant impurity cations, making selective Ni/Co enrichment highly challenging. Industrial routes for producing mixed sulfide precipitate (MSP) or mixed hydroxide precipitate (MHP) are technically mature, but often suffer from long flowsheets, Ni/Co losses, and impurity-rich intermediates requiring further purification. Direct solvent extraction offers a promising alternative owing to its high selectivity, efficient separation, and easy automation. However, conventional acidic organophosphorus extractants, such as D2EHPA, PC-88 A, and Cyanex 272, suffer from limited Ni/Co selectivity due to severe impurity co-extraction. Moreover, some reported synergistic systems remain constrained by insufficient acid resistance, limited loading capacity, or poor industrial applicability. To address these issues, a neutral ligand, MSL255, integrating two pyridyl groups with a hydrophobic aromatic ether framework, was designed and synthesized. When combined with D2EHPA, the optimized formulation provides pronounced synergistic enhancement, yielding synergistic factors (SF) of 87.2 for Ni(II) and 23.3 for Co(II), while impurity ions exhibit SF < 1. Correspondingly, the separation factors (β) reach β(Ni/M) > 249 and β(Co/M) > 41. The system removes more than 99% of Ca, Mg, and Mn with minimal Ni loss, and displays a clear stepwise stripping sequence in which Co is released at lower acidity whereas Ni requires higher acidity for complete stripping. Spectroscopic characterization together with DFT/ESP analysis confirms that MSL255 stabilizes Ni/Co–extractant adducts while weakening the coordination of impurity ions, thereby enhancing selectivity. Overall, the D2EHPA–MSL255 system provides a low-acidity, high-selectivity strategy for Ni/Co enrichment from Ca–Mg–Mn sulfate media.

The pyrolysis of metal soaps to produce hydrocarbon rich fuel has been studied extensively. However, the combined effects of microwave radiation and metal ion types on hydrocarbon production have not been addressed. In this study, the microwave and conventional pyrolysis experiments were conducted on five metal soaps (Li soap, Na soap, K soap, Ca soap, Mg soap). The results demonstrated that the metal ions at the carboxyl end of the soap enhanced the polarity of the reactants, leading to a rapid increase in temperature under microwave conditions. With the ion radius increasing, the heating rate increased gradually. Compared with conventional pyrolysis, microwave pyrolysis exhibited a more rapid heating rate, a higher degree of carbon chain fracture, and a greater abundance of small olefin compounds, which promoted aromatization reaction and the release of CO, H 2 and CH 4 . In addition, the composition of the pyrolysis products derived from different metal soaps is affected by the characteristics of metal ions. As the radius of metal ions increased, the oxygen content in the liquid products decreased gradually, while the carbon content increased. The strengthening effect of microwave was further analyzed. With the increase in the radius of metal ions, the strengthening effect of microwaves on olefins formation was gradually weakened, while the inhibiting effect on alkanes formation was gradually enhanced. The structure of carboxylate network is affected by the radius of metal ions, which results in the regular change of the strengthening effect of microwave on olefins and other products. This study is highly significant in guiding the pyrolysis of soapstock waste to prepare olefins and alkanes with high efficiency and low energy consumption.
