CD-MOF Based pH/ROS Sensitive 5-ASA Delivery System for Ulcerative Colitis Therapy

Yanxue Si,Ruitao Cha,Pai Zhang,Fengshan Zhou,Wenbing Yuan,Xingyu Jiang

5-Aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) is the first-line drug for ulcerative colitis (UC), which encounters therapeutic constraints due to the poor water solubility and absorption by the upper gastrointestinal. Here, a cyclodextrin-based metal-organic framework (CD-MOF) is used as a carrier for 5-ASA (ASA@CM) to enhance its solubility. To improve the targeted release 5-ASA, ASA@CM is incorporated into sodium alginate/ L -arginine complex (SA-LA) to obtain the desired microspheres (ASA@CM/SL) by electrospray. ASA@CM/SL safeguards 5-ASA against the harsh gastrointestinal environment and provides favorable delivery to the colon. The anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant activity is studied by measuring inflammatory factors and reactive oxygen species (ROS). The therapeutic effect of ASA@CM/SL on UC mice induced with dextran sulfate sodium is assessed. The biosafety by evaluating cytotoxicity and organ toxicity is studied. ASA@CM/SL shows excellent therapeutic effects for UC, as evidenced by its alleviation of inflammatory response and restoration of disrupted intestinal barriers. ASA@CM/SL features low cytotoxicity and low organ toxicity. This study provides a potential strategy for improving 5-ASA solubility and delivery efficiency, which may also be applied to broadly tackle various small hydrophobic molecules to treat UC and other intestinal diseases.

Ultrasensitive and Visualized Rapid Detection of Organophosphorus Pesticides Using Ultrathin 2D Eu3+@Cd-MOF Fluorescent Nanosheets

Guoxu Qin,Jiali Wang,Yaqiong Kong,Rong Wu,Duojun Cao,Xiangzi Li,Xiaoyong Xu

Organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) are widely used worldwide. However, OPs residues can cause serious health problems. Traditional analytical approaches for OPs detection fail to offer simple, real-time, and visualization. Herein, Ultrathin Eu 3+ @Cd-MOF nanosheets with a thickness of 6 nm were synthesized via a simple solution route. Due to the antenna effect between 4,4′-dicarboxydiphenyl ether (H 2 OBA), 2,2′-bipyridine (BPY), and Eu 3+ , the as-prepared nanosheets displayed characteristic fluorescence emission of Eu 3+ ions at 616 nm under the excitation of 323 nm. The strong fluorescence was quenched by p-nitrophenyl phosphate (PNPP) without any interference from other pesticide in aqueous systems; Eu 3+ @Cd-MOF nanosheets can serve as a highly sensitive probe for visualizing fluorescence and detecting PNPP in water systems with a low LOD of 65 nM and a rapid response time of 20 s. A systematic investigation of the sensing mechanism indicated that the combination of the photoelectron transfer (PET) and the inner filter effect (IFT) resulted in the selective detection of PNPP. The luminescence detection approach offers a rapid, low-cost, and visualized detection method for PNPP remaining on fruits and vegetables surfaces.

Construction of CdS/MoS2 heterojunction from core–shell MoS2@Cd-MOF for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Lin Lin,Siyu Huang,Yuxin Zhu,Biao Du,Zhihua Zhang,Chao Chen,Xuewen Wang,Ning Zhang

A new synthetic method was used to develop a CdS/MoS2 heterojunction. Cd-MOF was coated onto the surface of MoS2 flowers to construct a core–shell MoS2@Cd-MOF. Thioacetamide was used as a sulfur source to sulfurize the MoS2@Cd-MOF to form a CdS/MoS2 heterojunction. Since the Cd2+ ions were highly ordered and separated by the organic ligands of the Cd-MOF shell, the as-synthesized CdS/MoS2 heterojunction possessed a large surface area and intimate contact at the heterogeneous interface with a uniform loading of CdS nanoparticles on the MoS2 flowers. Consequently, the CdS/MoS2 heterojunction exhibited a significantly enhanced photocatalytic H2 evolution rate of average 5587 μmol h−1 g−1 under UV-visible light irradiation.

A sustainable superhydrophobic paper enabled by CD-MOF/PDMS synergistic engineering for highly efficient oil/water separation

Jiachuan Chen,Jiaming Fan,Kefeng Liu,Junchao Li,Qixiu Dong,Guihua Yang

Traditional oil/water separation materials are greatly limited by poor eco-friendly, high energy consumption, and tedious preparation process. To address these issues, a sustainable superhydrophobic paper-based material (PDMS-CP@γ-CD-MOF) was developed through synergistic modification of cellulose paper sourced from wheat straw. A rough structure on the superhydrophobic paper was created by in-situ growth of γ-cyclodextrin metal-organic framework (γ-CD-MOF), and the surface energy was controlled via polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coating. The resulting superhydrophobic paper displayed appropriate mechanical strength, excellent superhydrophobicity and self-cleaning ability. Notably, gravity-driven separation of various oil/water mixtures was achieved with efficiencies over 97 % and flux rates reaching up to 382–603 L·m⁻²·h⁻¹ . Moreover, the superhydrophobic paper demonstrated excellent reusability, maintaining a separation efficiency above 98 % after 10 cycles, which indicates promising potential for treating oily industrial wastewater.

The performance of an atomically dispersed oxygen reduction catalyst prepared by γ-CD-MOF integration with FePc

Dawei Xu,Xuhui Li,Tingting Zheng,Ruixue Zhao,Pengyu Zhang,Kai Li,Zhongfeng Li,Lirong Zheng,Xia Zuo

Here, a series of Fe/N/C catalysts with different proportions and pyrolysis temperatures are prepared by co-pyrolysis of melamine with a γ-cyclodextrin metal–organic framework (γ-CD-MOF) containing iron(II) phthalocyanine (FePc). Due to the restriction effect of the host and guest at the molecular level, γ-CD-MOF can effectively avoid the π–π stacking of FePc and restrain the agglomeration of Fe atoms during pyrolysis. The phases and structures of the catalysts are characterized, which proves that the obtained catalyst has a three-dimensional porous and internal cavity structure with abundant surface area (1055.317 m2 g−1) and Fe is atomically dispersed in nitrogen-doped carbon. The onset potential (0.988 V vs. RHE) and half-wave potential (0.846 V vs. RHE) of FePc@CD/M (1 : 20)-1000 are superior to those of a commercial 20% Pt/C catalyst. FePc@CD/M (1 : 20)-1000 also exhibits an approximately four-electron (3.84) transfer process, good stability and excellent methanol tolerance.

Yun Cao,Ke-Xin Yuan,Yan Wang

A newly developed cadmium coordination polymer, [Cd(HEA)(L1)] n ( 1 ), was prepared via a hydrothermal method and demonstrated to function as a multifunctional fluorescent probe for detecting heavy metal ions and antibiotics in aqueous solutions. The compound exhibits an unique two-dimensional layered structure that self-organizes into a robust three-dimensional framework, showcasing exceptional thermal stability and significant solvent tolerance. Fluorescence studies emphasized the outstanding metal ion detection capabilities of complex 1 , which demonstrated a detection limit of 0.01434 μM for Fe 3+ and 0.05949–0.06148 μM for Cr 6+ . Furthermore, the material exhibited selective fluorescence quenching towards specific antibiotics, with detection limits of 0.0369 μM for Ornidazole (ODZ) and 0.0687 μM for Nitrofurazone (NFZ). Notably, the material retained its fluorescent properties over five consecutive usage cycles. Comprehensive experimental studies and theoretical calculations show that the fluorescence quenching process involves the synergistic action of multiple mechanisms, mainly including: static quenching, dynamic quenching, competitive absorption, and light-induced electron transfer pathways. This work presents a promising strategy for sensing trace heavy metals and antibiotics in water systems, offering valuable contributions to the development of advanced environmental monitoring methodologies.

CD-MOF-assisted phase transfer combined with SERS for rapid and eco-friendly detection of zearalenone in edible oil

Haoxiang Liu,Zhenjiong Wang,Lihua Zhou,Weiwei Cheng,Peng Li,Di Wu,Linghan Meng,Yan Zhang,Xiaozhi Tang

A novel and eco-friendly ZEN phase transfer method was developed using CD-MOF. • Amphiphilic character of CD-MOF promotes transfer of ZEN from oil to aqueous phase. • CTAB micelles on Au NRs facilitated adsorption of hydrophobic ZEN to its hotspot. • Rapid SERS sensing of ZEN was achieved based on this novel pretreatment method. An eco-friendly phase-transfer method based on cyclodextrin-metal-organic framework (CD-MOF) was developed to extract zearalenone (ZEN) from edible oil into aqueous phase. Leveraging this green pretreatment approach, a rapid surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensing platform was established for ZEN detection. CD-MOF possesses an amphiphilic structure, whose hydrophobic cavities can encapsulate ZEN to form host-guest complexes. The gradual structural collapse of CD-MOF leads to the release of ZEN into the aqueous phase, achieving efficient oil-to-water transfer with an extraction efficiency of 80–90%. Following this extraction method, SERS detection was achieved using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-capped gold nanorods (Au NRs). The CTAB bilayer on the Au NR surface facilitates the adsorption of hydrophobic ZEN toward the plasmonic hotspots, significantly enhancing the Raman signal. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of CD-MOF extraction and Au NRs-based SERS enhancement, rapid detection of ZEN in corn oil was achieved with performance comparable to that of conventional high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Crosslinked-AuNPs@CD-MOF Incorporated into PLA-Zein Composite Film with Humidity-Responsive Antimicrobial Release for Agaricus bisporus Preservation

Tahirou Sogore,Meimei Guo,Jin Huang,Xinyu Liao,Tian Ding,Mofei Shen

Foodborne pathogens cause hundreds of millions of illnesses annually, underscoring the urgent need for advanced antimicrobial food packaging materials. The objective of this study was to develop a crosslinked cyclodextrin metal–organic framework, loaded with gold nanoparticles (CL-AuNPs@CD-MOF) and integrated into a PLA-Zein composite film with humidity-responsive antimicrobial release, as a sustainable and high-performance packaging solution to address the critical limitations of conventional materials in controlling microbial contamination during food storage. Therefore, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were synthesized via a green approach using CD-MOFs as stabilizers and p-coumaric acid as a natural reducing agent, then crosslinked with diphenyl carbonate (DPC) to produce CL-AuNPs@CD-MOF. Crosslinking conditions were optimized to a CD-MOF:DPC ratio of 1:1, 1080 min reaction time, and 80 °C, preserving the cubic morphology and crystalline structure while transforming burst release into sustained antimicrobial activity againstE. coliandS. aureusover 7 days. Then, the incorporation of CL-AuNPs@CD-MOF into PLA-Zein films yielded a composite packaging material with favorable mechanical and barrier properties, including a water vapor transmission rate of 539.44 g/m2·24 h and an oxygen permeability of 235.90 cm3/m2·24 h·0.1 MPa. Progressive elimination ofE. coli,S. aureus, andL. monocytogenesover 7 days was confirmed, with antimicrobial efficacy originating exclusively from the CL-AuNPs@CD-MOF component. Application onAgaricus bisporusover 12 days of refrigerated storage demonstrated superior preservation performance: mushrooms inoculated withL. monocytogenesand packaged with CL-AuNPs@CD-MOF/PLA-Zein exhibited a weight loss of only 6.20 ± 2.06%, compared to 17.74 ± 3.15% for PLA-Zein and 41.50 ± 3.01% for PE controls. Color stability was equally improved, with lightness values of 71.46 ± 1.47 retained under CL-AuNPs@CD-MOF/PLA-Zein packaging, versus 58.37 ± 0.86 for PLA-Zein and 23.34 ± 2.34 for PE. Mushrooms inoculated withE. coliandS. aureusfollowed consistent trends. These results establish CL-AuNPs@CD-MOF/PLA-Zein as a promising multifunctional antimicrobial packaging platform for sustainable food preservation.

Ferulic Acid-in-CD-MOF-1 and Natamycin Nanocapsules as a Dual-Functional System for Antioxidant and Antifungal Litchi Preservation

He Wanjun,Lv Danyu,Wu Qingxiao,Xu Huanyu,Guan Yongguang,Zeng Xin-An

Litchi ( L. chinensis Sonn.) is a perishable fruit that is vulnerable to oxidative browning and fungal infection. Herein, ferulic acid and natamycin were chosen as the antioxidant and antimycotic agents, respectively. To improve their water solubility, we used CD-MOF-1 to encapsulate ferulic acid. Meanwhile, natamycin was encapsulated with gum arabic and pullulan. The most homogeneous and stable natamycin nanocapsules were fabricated through stirring 0.5 mg/mL natamycin using 2.5% (w/v) gum arabic-pullulan (1:1, w/w, 1.25% each) in water. The main encapsulation mechanisms of ferulic acid and natamycin were electrostatic interactions between the carboxyl groups of ferulic acid and K + ions from CD-MOF-1 and hydrophobic interactions between the macrocyclic lactone ring of natamycin and the protein part of gum arabic, respectively. In addition, pullulan was indispensable for stabilizing natamycin. The antioxidant and antifungal composite sol presented 99.85% oxidation inhibition and 79.06% mycelial growth inhibition and effectively delayed the oxidative browning and fungal decay on litchi pericarps.

γ-CD-MOF@Eu-MOF flower-like probe synthesized for sensitive sulfonamides detection. • Paper-based sensor enables portable, visual on-site testing via smartphone imaging. • Machine learning algorithm boosts detection speed and reliability for quantitation. • The detection limit of the γ-CD-MOF@Eu-MOF for SAs is as low as 25.5 nmol/L. The protection of human health and the guarantee of food safety necessitate rapid and precise identification of sulfonamides (SAs) residues in food. Herein, we propose a fluorescence sensor based on γ-CD-MOF@Eu-MOF, which is used for quantitative and visual detection of SAs. The γ-CD-MOF@Eu-MOF exhibits high selectivity toward SAs, with detection limits for sulfamerazine (SMR), sulfamethazine (SM 2 ), and sulfamethoxydiazine (SMD) as low as 25.5 nmol/L, 36.7 nmol/L, and 39.8 nmol/L, respectively. The fluorescent probes were immobilized on paper substrates to construct a paper-based sensor, which was combined with a smartphone-assisted machine learning algorithm to enable high-throughput, intelligent, and rapid detection of SAs. After optimizing the constructed prediction model, the coefficient of determination can reach 0.99, indicating the accuracy and applicability of the model. Overall, this sensor exhibits excellent stability, sensitivity, and specificity, providing a practical approach for the intelligent, rapid, and high-throughput on-site visual detection of SAs. Water-stable PEG2000-modified citric acid crosslinked β-CD MOF for efficient removal of tetracycline hydrochloride: synthesis, adsorption behavior, and mechanism

Chunlin Gou,Ziqing Weng,Xiaoshuang Dai,Jianpeng Liu,Ke Mei,Bin Sun,Neng Qiu

To address the ecological and health risks associated with residual tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) in water, a green-synthesized adsorbent composed of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD), citric acid (CA), and polyethylene glycol (PEG) was developed for the effective removal of TCH from wastewater. The synthetic parameters were optimized, and the resulting PEG-CA-β-CD MOF was characterized by FT-IR, XRD, and SE. TGA analysis indicated an increase in the thermal stability. The maximum adsorption capacity of PEG-CA-β-CD MOF for TCH was 221.6 mg/g at pH = 4. Adsorption kinetics were well-described by the Elovich equation model, while the Freundlich isothermal model accurately described the equilibrium data adsorption Thermodynamic analysis revealed that the adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous. Furthermore, the adsorbent maintained 84 % of its initial adsorption capacity after four reuse cycles. Analysis using zeta potential, FT-IR, and XPS confirmed that the possible adsorption mechanism of TCH mainly involves electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and cavity encapsulation. Finally, simulated wastewater experiments showed that PEG-CA-β-CD MOF was able to adsorb TCH efficiently even in the presence of other pollutants. Overall, due to its green synthesis process, low cost, ease of regeneration, and multi-mechanistic adsorption capability, the PEG-CA-β-CD MOF exhibits significant potential for TCH removal in wastewater treatment.

Preparation of zein active films with antimicrobial and antioxidant properties by incorporating gallic acid loaded γ-CD-MOF for pork preservation

Shuqi Zhang,Jing Yi,Zhilong Zhang,Xuanxuan Yuan,Zhongguo Shan,Haihua Wang

The growing concerns over food contamination caused by microorganisms, coupled with the worsening environmental impact of petroleum-based plastics have drawn significant attention to eco-friendly materials in food packaging. Herein, cyclodextrin-metal-organic framework (CD-MOF) was prepared as promising nanocarrier for the natural product gallic acid (GA). Then, the prepared material (GA@CD-MOF) was incorporated into zein matrix to obtain Zein-GA@CD-MOF films. Further studies showed that the composite films possessed great potential for food packaging, offering excellent UV-light blocking, water resistance , and mechanical properties. Notably, Zein-GA@CD-MOF films demonstrated superior antimicrobial activity (44.56%–77.97% against Escherichia coli O157:H7 and 28.36%–59.49% against Salmonella enterica ) and sustained antioxidant properties for 100 days, which correlated with the sustainable release effect of GA. Furthermore, the exceptional biosafety of GA@CD-MOF has been confirmed through cytotoxicity and hemolysis assays. Pork preservation experiments illustrated that the obtained films could retard protein degradation, microorganism growth, and lipid oxidation, extending the shelf-life by 9 days at 4 °C. These findings suggest that Zein-GA@CD-MOF films has promising application prospects in pork preservation packaging.
