Efficient production of hydrogen through visible-light-driven water splitting mechanism using semiconductor-based composites has been identified as a promising strategy for converting light into clean H 2 fuel. However, researchers are facing lots of challenges such as light absorption and electron-hole pair recombination and so on. Here, new sheet-shaped MoS 2 and pyramid-shaped CdS in-situ co-grown on porous TiO 2 photocatalysts (MoS 2 CdS TiO 2 ) are successfully obtained via mild sulfuration of MoO 3 and CdO coexisted inside porous TiO 2 monolith by a hydrothermal route. The scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy results exhibit that the MoS 2 CdS TiO 2 composites have average pore size about 500 nm. The 3%MoS 2 10%CdS TiO 2 demonstrated excellent photocatalytic activity and high stability for a hydrogen production with a high H 2 -generation rate of 4146 μmol h −1 g −1 under visible light irradiation even without noble-metal co-catalysts. The super photocatalytic performance of the visible-light-driven hydrogen evolution is predominantly attributed to the synergistic effect . The conduction band of MoS 2 facilitates in transporting excited electrons from visible-light on CdS to the porous TiO 2 for catalytic hydrogen production, and holes to MoS 2 for inhibiting the photocorrosion of CdS, respectively, leading to enhancing the efficient separation of electrons and holes.

1D porous CdS nanoparticles/TiO 2 nanofibers heterostructure has been fabricated via simple electrospinning and a successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) process. The morphology, composition, and optical properties of the resulting CdS/TiO 2 heterostructures can be rationally tailored through changing the SILAR cycles. The photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and decomposition of rhodamine B (RhB) of the as-synthesized heterostructured photocatalysts were investigated under visible light irradiation. Compared to TiO 2 nanofibers, the as-obtained CdS/TiO 2 heterostructures exhibit enhanced photocatalytic activity for hydrogen production and decomposition of RhB under visible-light irradiation. The heterojunction system performs best with H 2 generation rates of 678.61 μmol h −1 g −1 under visible light irradiation which benefits from the two effects: (a) the 1D porous nanofibrous morphology contributes to not only more active sites but also more efficient transfer of the photogenerated charges (b) the synergetic effect of heterojunction and photosensitization reducing the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes.

The introduction of MoS 2 is beneficial to the separation and transfer of photogenerated electron–hole pairs for CdS/TiO 2 . Herein, MoS 2 /CdS/TiO 2 composites were synthesized by one-step solvothermal method at 200 °C and applied to photocatalytic reduction of U(VI) from aqueous solutions. The batch characterizations showed the irregular spherical MoS 2 /CdS/TiO 2 composites with low bandgap (1.95 eV) and high chemical stability. MoS 2 /CdS/TiO 2 composites displayed the rapid removal rate of U(VI) (more than 90 % under 15 min illumination), good regeneration (> 91 % after four cycles) due to the highly efficient separation of electron-hole pair. The possible photocatalytic pathway was demonstrated to be the main active ·O 2 − radical by quenching experiments, ESR and XPS analysis. This work highlights the potential application of MoS 2 /CdS/TiO 2 on removal of radioactive wastewater in the actual remediation.

Upconversion nanoparticles/semiconductor nanocomposites have received intense interest in the past two decades. In this work, we demonstrated a facile electrospinning technique and a hydrothermal-assisted crystallization process to fabricate upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs)/CdS/TiO2 nanofibers successfully. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP, Mw ≈ 1 300 000) has been selected as the polymer matrix and tetrabutyl titanate (TBT, 99.0%) was used as the titanium source. The morphologies and phase of the as-prepared samples have been studied using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Experimental results revealed that the polymer matrix (PVP) can be dissolved and removed completely under hydrothermal conditions. In addition, the crystalline phase of TiO2 was also achieved under hydrothermal conditions. The as-prepared composite nanofibers are hundreds of micrometers in length and 650 nm in diameter and show weak upconversion fluorescence under the excitation of near-infrared light (980 nm), indicating the high energy transfer efficiency between upconversion nanoparticles and semiconductors. As expected, the UCNPs/CdS/TiO2 nanofibers may have enhanced photocatalytic performance as they make full use of solar energy using UCNPs as nanotransducers for infrared (IR) light.

The
synergistic coupling of photocatalytic hydrogen production
with high-value-added organic conversion provides a new research direction
for the efficient use of solar energy and green chemical synthesis.
However, key challenges remain in the same catalytic system, such
as severe carrier recombination and difficulty in precisely controlling
the interfacial reaction pathways. To address these issues, we construct
CdS/TiO 2 heterojunction photocatalysts with Pt species
introduced by ion exchange and photodeposition. As a result, the Cd(Pt)S/TiO 2 –Pt composite photocatalyst is successfully prepared.
Under visible light irradiation, the catalyst achieves highly selective
conversion of 4-pyridinemethanol to the C–C coupling product
1, 2-di(4-pyridyl)-1,2-ethanediol, with a selectivity of 89.22%. Under
optimized reaction conditions, the maximum H 2 production
rate of the catalyst reaches 4.66 mmol·g –1 ·h –1 . Mechanistic studies show that the photogenerated
holes enriched on the surface of Cd(Pt)S drive the sp 3 C–H
dehydrogenation of 4-pyridinemethanol to form •CH(OH)C 5 H 4 N radicals, which then undergo radical coupling
to form new C–C bonds. Meanwhile, the photogenerated electrons
transfer through TiO 2 to the Pt active sites to participate
in hydrogen evolution. This study provides new insights into regulating
the selective conversion of radicals via interfacial electronic engineering
and designing photocatalytic coupled reaction systems.

Coupling CO 2 photoreduction with selective organic synthesis offers a promising modus operandi to enable simultaneous utilization of photogenerated electrons and holes to realize solar fuels production and chemicals synthesis. Herein, we report a bifunctional zero-dimensional cadmium sulfide quantum dots-two-dimensional titanium dioxide nanosheets (CdS/TNS) heterostructure for photoredox-catalyzed coupling of C–C bond synthesis via selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol with CO 2 photoreduction to CO under visible light. The compositing heterointerface is beneficial for the adsorption and activation of CO 2 , thereby promoting the photoreduction of CO 2 . Remarkably, the synergistic interaction between CdS and TNS tunes the selectivity of benzyl alcohol oxidation from carbonyl compound to the C–C coupled products. Mechanistic studies unveil that the generation of C–C coupled products processes via key radical •CH(OH)Ph intermediates. Theoretical simulations reveal that the weaker adsorption of •CH(OH)Ph radical over CdS/TNS than bare CdS contributes to the formation of highly selective C–C coupled products. The findings are expected to offer instructive guidance on rationally designing the dual-functional catalysts with efficient photoredox-catalyzed coupling reaction systems for integrating CO 2 reduction with selective organic transformations.

Photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production and the degradation of organic pollutants are regarded as promising strategies to address the current energy crisis and environmental issues. As a wide-bandgap metal oxide, TiO 2 is characterized by low catalytic activity and a narrow range of light absorption when used alone, whereas its combination with narrow-bandgap semiconductors has been shown to lead to a significant enhancement in catalytic performance. In this study, CdS–TiO 2 composites were synthesized via a ball-milling method, after which Pt–Pd nanoparticles were deposited by photodeposition. The noble metals were found to interact with CdS and TiO 2 respectively, while a synergistic catalytic effect between Pd and Pt was also observed. The photocatalytic efficiency was further extended by the formation of CdS–TiO 2 heterojunctions, resulting in a significantly enhanced hydrogen production rate of 4656.99 μmol h −1 g cat −1 in the ternary system. Moreover, the composite demonstrated significantly enhanced performance in the photocatalytic reduction of 4-NP, The Pt–Pd NPs/CdS-Vo-TiO 2 photocatalyst achieved a 95.2 % conversion rate for 4-NP within 2 min, also demonstrating high photocatalytic activity.

An ultrasensitive photoelectrochemical (PEC) immunoassay based on multiple signal amplification strategy was fabricated for the detection of microcystin-LR (MC-LR). The CdS/TiO 2 nanorod arrays (CdS/TiO 2 NRAs) modified FTO electrode, which can weaken the self-oxidation by photogenerated holes of CdS nanoparticles , and limit the recombination of electron-hole pairs and broaden optical absorption of TiO 2 NRAs, was used as a visible-light driven material to immobilize antigens. Then, Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles/polydopamine (Fe 3 O 4 @PDA) was used as the carrier to load secondary antibody (Ab 2 ) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP), where Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles and HRP can synergistically accelerate the oxidation of 4-chloro-1-naphthol (4-CN) by H 2 O 2 to produce biocatalytic precipitation (BCP) on the surface of modified electrode . Due to the catalytic activity of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles and HRP, the nonproductive absorption of HRP and the steric hindrance by BCP, the photocurrent change was amplified. The proposed PEC immunosensor can detect MC-LR in a range of 0.005–500 μg/L with a detection limit of 0.001 μg/L. Meanwhile, the PEC immunosensor exhibited high sensitivity, good stability, acceptable selectivity and reproducibility, indicating its potential application in environmental monitoring.

Strong absorption in a wide wavelength range and effective charge separation are main factors for improving photocatalytic activity of semiconductor photocatalysts. Herein, immobilized zero-dimensional/one-dimensional (0D/1D) Au/CuS/CdS/TiO 2 nanobelts (Au/CuS/CdS/TiO 2 NBs) heterostructure photocatalyst with innovative morphology and appropriate band-gap configuration was synthesized for the first time. For this construction, TiO 2 NBs provide the 1D structure for a large superficial area and fast electron mobility, 0D CdS and CuS nanoparticles are the visible-light responsive nanomaterials, and Au nanoparticles serve as the surface plasmon resonance effect and electron transfer. The Au/CuS/CdS/TiO 2 NBs showed improved photocatalytic performance towards moxifloxacin (MOX) degradation, which can be attributed to the promoted photoabsorption contribution and enhanced separation and transfer of photoexcited electrons and holes. The morphology, constitution, optical and electrochemical properties of the prepared photocatalyst were investigated comprehensively. Moreover, the photocatalytic degradation mechanism and degradation by-products of moxifloxacin were studied. Results showed that the OH, O 2 − and h + are the main chemical oxidation species responsible for the degradation of MOX. Eight different photocatalytic degradation products were detected. The stability assessment showed that photodissolution plays the primary role in the photocatalytic performance decrease of Au/CuS/CdS/TiO 2 NBs. This work gives a promising strategy to rational design efficient hybrid metal-semiconductor photocatalysts for solar energy conversion.

Ultrasensitive detection and degradation of tetracycline (TC) has gained increasing attention owing to their inevitable detriments to human and ecosystem. Many studies have focused on mono-functional detection or degradation. However, the design of multi-functional materials is still a challenge. Till now, a novel protocol applied to the consecutive detection and complete degradation of TC are rarely successfully reported. Herein, we not only developed a multi-mode optical carbon dots (CDs) for ultra-sensitive sensing, but also further manufactured CDs/TiO 2 photocatalyst that can degrade TC 100 %, completely eliminating the TC for the first time. The as-prepared CDs can selectively detect TC with low detection limit of 5.2 nM and 10.7 nM within only 40 s, accompanied by wide linear interval of 1.0–50.0 μM and 50.0–250.0 μM, respectively. Therefore, the fabricated point-of-care testing platform can realize “in-situ” visual detection rapidly and efficiently. Furthermore, a highly active CDs/TiO 2 photocatalyst was prepared by rationally modifying CDs on TiO 2 and exhibited almost 100 % degradation behavior towards TC within 70 min. The mechanism of fluorescence quenching and photocatalysis were lucubrated. Notably, our proposed protocol can drive consecutive detection and elimination towards tetracycline, which powerfully reduces the potential harm and provides a new strategy for the eradication of pollutants.
