The efficient recovery of gold from thiosulfate leaching solutions remains challenging due to the low efficiency and operational complexity of existing methods. In this work, a cadmium sulfide-molybdenum disulfide heterojunction supported on alumina beads (CdS-MoS 2 @AS) was synthesized via a controlled hydrothermal strategy. The resulting composite was subsequently applied as a photocatalyst for the efficient recovery of trace thiosulfate gold (Au(S 2 O 3 ) 2 3- ) from thiosulfate systems. Structural and compositional analyses confirmed the successful formation of the CdS-MoS 2 heterojunction, which facilitated the separation and transport of photogenerated charge carriers. CdS-MoS 2 @AS achieved almost 100% gold recovery within 20 min, outperforming previously reported gold recovery materials. Even at ultralow gold concentrations (1–10 ppm), the photocatalyst maintained outstanding recovery efficiency, underscoring its potential for direct gold recovery from low-grade thiosulfate leachate streams. The enhanced recovery performance was attributed to the synergistic optical response of the CdS-MoS 2 heterojunction, which promoted rapid photogenerated electron transfer, thereby driving the effective reduction of Au(S 2 O 3 ) 2 3- to metallic Au 0 . This study presents an efficient and scalable strategy for gold recovery from thiosulfate solutions with great significance for the sustainable development of gold.

CdS@MoS 2 nanocomposites (NCs) were successfully prepared through a simple hydrothermal reaction. The morphology and structure of MoS 2 nanoflowers on CdS nanorods could be regulated by the change of the mass percentage of MoS 2 . The adsorption efficiency and photocatalytic activity of CdS@MoS 2 NCs were investigated by the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine 6G. Interestingly, with the increase of MoS 2 ratio in the NCs, the adsorption effect of CdS@MoS 2 NCs increased significantly. These CdS@MoS 2 NCs showed a strong ability to process Rhodamine 6G, and could deal with up to 95% Rhodamine 6G within 1 h. Graphical abstract CdS@MoS 2 nanocomposites with tunable shape were synthesized through a hydrothermal method and possess high performance in the removal of Rhodamine 6G

Exploration of highly active and noble-metal-free photocatalysts for high-efficiency photocatalytic water splitting is of great importance. Herein, a facile and effective in-situ hydrothermal method has been developed for preparation of CdS/MoS 2 heterostructures with a unique hollow microbox morphology for visible-light-driven water splitting into H 2 . The influence of MoS 2 is systematically investigated in terms of optical properties and photocatalytic activity of the CdS/MoS 2 microboxes by varying the concentration of sodium molybdate. Under visible-light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm), the CdS/MoS 2 microboxes exhibit superior photocatalytic H 2 evolution activity (1.36 mmol/g/h) compared to pure CdS microboxes (0.04 mmol/g/h), corresponding to an apparent quantum yield of 14.5% at 420 nm. Photocatalytic mechanism study proves that the MoS 2 nanosheets can serve as a co-catalyst and electron acceptor, for the effective promotion of electron transfer and separation of photogenerated charge carriers from CdS to further stimulate the surface H 2 evolution kinetics. Furthermore, the well-defined interior voids, low density and shell permeability of the hierarchical CdS/MoS 2 microboxes also contribute to the improvement of the photocatalytic performance.

CdS is a promising photocatalyst and combining MoS 2 with CdS can realize efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production. However, most of the previous researches about MoS 2 /CdS composites focus on hexagonal CdS. Studies on cubic CdS are still rare due to its unstability. Thus in this paper, a ternary composite CdS-MoS 2 /C (abbreviated as CdS-MC, M = MoS 2 , C = activated carbon) was synthesized by facile in-situ liquid phase precipitation of cubic CdS on MoS 2 /C. Based on a series of characterizations, its photocatalytic hydrogen production performance was studied. Under the irradiation of a LED lamp , a high H 2 evolution activity of 879.6 μmol h −1 was achieved for the composite CdS-10%MC, which is 23.3 times that of pure CdS. In addition, its performance is much higher than that of the hexagonal CdS-MC sample (265.6 μmol/h) obtained by heat-treatment of CdS-MC at 400 °C for 1 h under N 2 atmosphere. What’s more, the stability of CdS-MC was investigated and the possible reasons for its unstability were analyzed in detail. To improve the stability, a method of 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) modification was also managed. Finally, possible mechanism for the photocatalytic hydrogen production of CdS-MC was proposed.

Ternary CdS-MoS 2 coated ZnO nanobrush photoelectrode from chemical bath deposition was successfully fabricated on a FTO substrate for photocatalytic degradation of amoxicillin. The vertically grown ZnO core on FTO substrates provided a direct pathway for electron transfer; while the well-crystallized CdS/MoS 2 shell offered effective visible light absorption and increased active sites. Prolonged lifetime of charge carriers was demonstrated by transient photovoltage (TPV) measurement. The ternary brush-type electrode exhibited enhanced photoelectrochemical performance with a photocurrent density of 20.32 mA/cm 2 at 0 V vs . Ag/AgCl under visible light illumination (λ ≧ 420 nm), which was 5.2 times, 1.8 times and 3.6 times of that of pristine CdS, CdS-MoS 2 film and ZnO/CdS nanobrush, respectively. The improved photoelectrochemical activity was ascribed to the enhancement of light absorption, appropriate band alignment and prolonged charge carriers’ lifetime. The ZnO/CdS-MoS 2 nanobrush film degraded 94% of amoxicillin in 60 min, exhibiting promising photocatalytic activity under visible light illumination (λ ≧ 420 nm). The reusability and stability of the electrode were evaluated by recycling experiments. The intermediates of amoxicillin oxidation were also identified and the degradation pathway was proposed.

The morphology of CdS affects its photocatalytic properties and assembly efficiency of CdS-based heterojunction . In this study, various morphologies of CdS, including sloping plate, spherical, flower, lamellar and leaf were synthesized by adjusting different solvents and crystal control agents in solvothermal process. By comparison of geometric matching and photocatalytic activity of the multi-shaped CdS assembling with MoS 2 , the concept of point-flat-plate microstructure assembly was firstly introduced into construction of ternary quasi 2D/2D CdS/MoS 2 /WS 2 heterojunction. Owing to better geometric configuration, quasi 2D/2D CdS/MoS 2 /WS 2 heterojunction exhibited excellent characteristics of photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline . In this work, 97.2% of tetracycline (20 mg/L, 0.1 g/L dosage) was degraded within 60 min under the irradiation of 150 W Xenon light power, which was superior to other previously reported CdS heterojunctions. The enhancement of photocatalytic performance was due to the faster separation of photogenerated electrons and the lower recombination of electron-hole pairs in point-flat-plate CdS/MoS 2 /WS 2 heterojunction. This study provides a promising way to construct highly efficient photocatalyst and other micro-nano structures for different applications.

S vacancies and Z-scheme heterojunction synergize in CdS/MoS 2 for visible-light H 2 evolution at 4464.5 μmol·g -1 ·h -1 . • S vacancies as e - traps and active sites synergize with Z-scheme, boosting charge separation and surface reactivity. • DFT shows S vacancies enhance interfacial orbital hybridization and lower charge-transfer barrier, confirming Z-scheme. • Optimized composite shows 82% retention after 10 cycles, highlighting defect-heterojunction synergy’s practicality. The integration of defect engineering and heterojunction construction provides a promising strategy for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. This work addresses the knowledge gap regarding their synergistic effect by constructing a Z-scheme heterojunction between sulfur vacancy-rich CdS (S V -CdS) and MoS 2 . The optimal composite achieved a remarkable hydrogen evolution rate of 4464.5 μmol g -1 h −1 under visible light, which is nearly sixfold enhancement compared to pristine S V -CdS. Mechanistic studies reveal that sulfur vacancies function dually. They act as electron traps to suppress charge recombination and as active sites to facilitate surface reactions. Meanwhile, the established Z-scheme charge transfer pathway, driven by the built-in electric field, enables directional electron migration to MoS 2 while preserving high redox potentials. First-principles calculations, including HSE06 hybrid functional calculations, corroborate these findings. They reveal that sulfur vacancies enhance orbital hybridization between CdS and MoS 2 , lowering the energy barrier for interfacial charge transfer. Additionally, the composite exhibits excellent stability, retaining ∼ 82% of its activity after 10 cycles. This work provides a fundamental insight and a design principle for developing efficient and stable photocatalysts through the combined application of defect and heterojunction engineering.
