A method is described for the simultaneous determination of hepatocellular carcinoma-associated microRNA-122 and microRNA-199a/b-3p. This probe consists of two kinds of nanomaterials. The first comprises CdTe@CdS core-shell quantum dots which, on excitation at 375 nm give two emissions, with peak wavelengths at 543 (g-QDs) and at 627 nm (r-QDs). The second comprises gold nanoparticles acting as a quencher. In the absence of the target, g-QD-N1 and r-QD-N2 are stable due to the fluorescence stability. With the addition of microRNA-122 and microRNA-199a/b-3p, g-QD-N1 and r-QD-N2 are conjugated to the surface of AuNP-S1/S2 through base complementary pairing. As a result, fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) occurs, resulting in a decrease at 550 nm and 635 nm respectively, which can realize the simultaneous detection of two different microRNAs. Detection is achieved within 50 min. The detection limits (3σ/k) are 0.2 nM for microRNA-122 and 0.5 nM for microRNA-199a/b-3p. The clinical applicability of the assay was demonstrated by detecting microRNAs in human serum and different cell lysates.

Cadmium ions (Cd 2+ ) greatly threat human health and the environment due to its extremely severe toxicity. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to establish a sensitive and portable platform for monitoring Cd 2+ on site. In this work, a novel microfluidic-based fluorescent electronic eye (E-eye) combined with tetrasodium iminodisuccinate (IDS)-etched CdTe/CdS quantum dots (QDs) was developed for portable and sensitive detection of trace Cd 2+ in water environment. The fluorescent E-eye consists of a microfluidic chip for miniaturized flow analysis, an ultraviolet light excitation module for fluorescent excitation, an optical lens for device miniaturization and a smartphone for portable photographing and analysis. The IDS was added in the CdTe/CdS QDs to cause fluorescence quenching due to the chemical etching. Subsequently added Cd 2+ will be recognized by etched QDs, thus inducing the fluorescence changes that can be directly captured by the E-eye for quantitative detection of Cd 2+ . With the optimization of all parameters including pH, reaction time and the concentration of IDS, the proposed platform could detect Cd 2+ with a low detection limit of 0.26 μg/L in the range of 1–250 μg/L. It is worth noting that the performance of the developed fluorescent E-eye is quite comparable to a commercial microplate reader with a detailed comparison in linearity, sensitivity and detection limit. In summary, the proposed microfluidic-based fluorescent E-eye provides a promising platform for portable and high sensitive detection of trace cadmium in water environment.

Thioglycolic acid-capped (TGA-capped) CdTe/CdS quantum dots (QDs) were prepared in the water phase. The interaction of TGA-CdTe/CdS QDs with polymyxin B sulfate (POBS) was investigated by ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) absorption, fluorescence (FL), resonance Rayleigh scattering (RRS) spectroscopy and the measurement of fluorescence lifetime . Under optimum conditions, not only the UV–vis absorption and fluorescence spectra were changed, but also the RRS intensity was greatly enhanced. These phenomena offered useful techniques for the determination of POBS with fluorescence quenching and RRS methods . The linear ranges and detection limits of POBS were 0.09–5.25 μg mL −1 and 27.5 ng mL −1 for the fluorescence quenching technique, 0.02–6.0 μg mL −1 and 6.36 ng mL −1 for the RRS technique. Among them, the RRS approach obtained the higher sensitivity. Accordingly, a novel rapid, convenient, and highly sensitive RRS method for the determination of POBS was proposed and applied to detect POBS in pharmaceutical preparations with satisfactory results. Furthermore, the suitable reaction conditions, affecting factors as well as the influence of coexisting substances were studied. Some possible reaction mechanisms were also discussed.

Cadmium-caused environmental pollution and diseases have always been worldwide problems. Thus it is extremely urgent to establish a cheap, rapid, simple and selective detection method for trace cadmium in drinking water . In this study, a fluorescence “turn-on” method based on ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA)-etched CdTe@CdS quantum dots (QDs) was designed to detect Cd 2+ . High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were utilized for chemical and structural characterization of the as-prepared QDs. Based on chemical etching of EDTA on the surface of CdTe@CdS QDs, specific Cd 2+ recognition sites were produced, and then results in fluorescence quenching . The introduction of Cd 2+ could identify these sites and restore the fluorescence of the EDTA-QDs system. Under the optimum conditions, the nanoprobe shows a linear response range from 0.05 to 9 μM with a very low detection limit of 0.032 μM. In addition, the reported fluorescence probe in this work displays a good selectivity for trace Cd 2+ over other metal ions and an admirable practicability in real water samples.

A novel fluorescent probe for Cu 2+ determination based on the fluorescence quenching of glyphosate (Glyp)-functionalized quantum dots (QDs) was firstly reported. Glyp had been used to modify the surface of QDs to form Glyp-functionalized QDs following the capping of thioglycolic acid on the core–shell CdTe/CdS QDs. Under the optimal conditions, the response was linearly proportional to the concentration of Cu 2+ between 2.4 × 10 −2 μg mL −1 and 28 μg mL −1 , with a detection limit of 1.3 × 10 −3 μg mL −1 (3 δ ). The Glyp-functionalized QDs fluorescent probe offers good sensitivity and selectivity for detecting Cu 2+ . The fluorescent probe was successfully used for the determination of Cu 2+ in environmental samples. The mechanism of reaction was also discussed.

Herein, a CdTe/CdS QDs (with a CdTe core and a CdS shell) amplified electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) of nitrogen functional graphene quantum dots (NGQDs) platform is reported. The utilization of CdTe/CdS QDs could facilitate the production of NGQDs radical, and then, a high yield of NGQDs* was formed due to the interaction of NGQDs radical with O 2 − , leading to an ∼21-fold ECL enhancement. This ECL enhancing system does not require the addition of coreactant and modification of electrode which is carried out in homogeneous solution. Benefiting from the remarkable ECL enhancement effect, a feasible and sensitive ECL sensor was constructed for ascorbic acid (AA) quantification. The proposed method features a detection limit of 70 nM with a linear calibration range from 100 nM to 100 μM, and exhibits good stability, practicability, and acceptable fabrication reproducibility, showing promising application in real-sample.

Intracellular three-dimensional (3D) thermal mapping is a valuable technical tool for answering fundamental scientific questions about cellular thermal behavior and subcellular diagnostic therapy. The best method for achieving intracellular 3D thermal imaging is to collect intracellular temperature response while also obtaining a 3D position for the corresponding location. However, temperature measurement in cell space has not been accurately characterized due to the difficulty in accurately locating the 3D position in microregions. In this article, we developed a QD-based intracellular 3D thermal imaging system by combining QD fluorescence thermometry with double-helical point spread function (DH-PSF)-based axial localization. Liposome transfection was used to achieve the cellular uptake of CdTe/CdS/ZnS QDs in HOS cells. Five QDs’ temperatures with spatial distribution in living cells were realized in the axial range of 1.35 μm by collecting the thermosensitive fluorescence emission of discrete QDs and the axial imaging localization information, and their 3D thermal image distribution was mapped. Measurements and analysis show that the combination of QD fluorescence thermometry and axial localization of DH-PSF enables the acquisition of thermal image information in intracellular 3D microregions. Using this system, temperature variations at 3D locations in living cells exposed to ionomycin Ca2+ stress were also monitored. The method described in this article can be applied broadly to the study of intracellular space thermal response and thermal regulation.

Resonance energy transfer (RET), as an efficient strategy, has been widely used for exploring a variety of biological processes and achieving sensitive bioanalysis. In this work, fluorescence and electrochemiluminescence (ECL) RET between graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) and NIR CdTe/CdS QDs was reported firstly. Based on this novel RET system, a sensitive sandwich-type ECL immunosensor was constructed to detect cancer antigen 125 (CA125). In this strategy, the ECL of Au NPs-functionalized graphitic carbon nitride nanohybrids (Au-g-C 3 N 4 NHs) was efficiently quenched by near-infrared CdTe/CdS quantum dots (NIR CdTe/CdS QDs), where NIR CdTe/CdS QDs acts as acceptors, and Au-g-C 3 N 4 NHs acts as donors. Au NPs improved the intensity and stability of ECL and provided sites to immobilize the antibody. Silica nanospheres carried abundant NIR CdTe/CdS QDs (QDs-SiO 2 ) labeling secondary antibodies, further enhancing the quenching effect. Under the optimum conditions, the constructed immunosensor showed excellent analytical performance with a linear concentration of CA125 from 0.0001 U mL −1 to 10 U mL −1 and the limit of detection reached 0.034 mU mL −1 (S/N = 3). Meanwhile, the immunosensor also revealed great stability, reproducibility, and selectivity and it could be applied in human serum samples successfully. This strategy provided a useful analytical method for the sensitive detection of biomarkers in the early stages of the disease and an innovative reference for developing more efficient and sensitive RET bioanalysis.

EDTA-etched CdTe@CdS QDs were used as the specific recognition element and signal probe of a fluorescence sensor or paper chip for the highly sensitive detection of Cd(II) with an electronic eye device as readout. The results showed that the CdTe@CdS QDs were successfully synthesized with a typical core–shell structure. Under the optimum conditions, the EDTA-etched CdTe@CdS QDs sensor achieved the sensitive detection of Cd(II) with a detection limit of 0.092 μM and a concentration range of 0.44–6.67 μM. The paper chips based on the EDTA-etched CdTe@CdS QDs sensor had a visual cut-off value of 0.44 μM with a short detection time (<15 min). The proposed method also exhibited excellent stability, high specificity, and good recovery for Cd(II) in real rice samples. These results suggested that the EDTA-etched CdTe@CdS QDs provide a promising platform for on-site and visual detection of Cd(II) in rice samples.
