Ammonia-hydrogen energy conversion is perceived as one of the effective methods to solve the storage and transportation problems of hydrogen energy. In recent years, the plasma-assisted strategy has shown great potential in the field of low-temperature ammonia decomposition. However, its enhancement mechanism for reaction kinetics has rarely been studied. Herein, by comparing the morphology and structural changes of catalysts with and without plasma field assistance before and after the reaction, we investigate the influence mechanism of the plasma field on the kinetics of the ammonia decomposition reaction (ADR). We found that the bombardment effect of high-energy particles in the plasma field can not only excite the reactant NH 3 to the activated NH x radical, but also effectively inhibit the agglomeration of active metal Ru in the catalyst, induce the generation of oxygen vacancies and N-containing carriers on the surface of CeO 2 , and thus change the dissociation path of N ≡ N. Ultimately, under the synergistic effect of the plasma and the catalyst, the low-temperature activity of the catalyst is significantly improved. At 350 ℃, the ammonia conversion rate of the plasma-assisted catalyst (Ru/CeO 2 -PEA) reaches 71%, which is much higher than 35% of the thermocatalytic sample without plasma field assistance, and the equilibrium state of ammonia decomposition can be reached at 450 ℃. This work sets out to elucidate the mechanistic details of plasma-assisted ammonia decomposition by establishing an improved theoretical model.

Rare-earth based transition metal oxides have proved to be the most promising candidates in the exploration of non-precious oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts. However, the knowledge regarding their active sites and electrocatalytic mechanism is very limited due to their different crystallization behaviors and there are still big challenges in the efficient coupling of transition and rare-earth metals with full utilization of active sites. To improve and stabilize OER catalysis, we developed the core-shell CeO 2 @CoNiO 2 nanoplates (NPLs) for enhanced and stable OER catalysis. Surprisingly, CeO 2 shell regulates the electronic structure of CoNiO 2 core and increases the number of active sites and oxygen vacancies to achieve high electrochemical performance in a three-electrode system. Compared with CoNiO 2 nanoparticles, the developed core-shell NPLs exhibit favorable performance with an overpotential of only 206 mV at 10 mA/cm 2 and robust electrochemical stability of 500 h at 10 mA/cm 2 and 300 h at 50 mA/cm 2 . In situ Raman spectroscopy unveils that CeO 2 @CoNiO 2 is structurally more stable than CoNiO 2 , which is consistent with its performance persistence. Besides, theoretical calculations confirm that the Ce shell serves as the active centers for OER, and the formed core-shell metal oxides NPLs promote the adsorption and dissociation of water, thus causing the fast generation of O 2 . This work provides a new perspective for designing highly active core-shell structure of mixed metal oxides of transition and rare-earth metals for OER.

Lu doped Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 (HZO) ferroelectric films were prepared on Pt/TiN/SiO2/Si substrate by chemical solution deposition method, and an interfacial engineering strategy for improving the ferroelectric property was explored by capping the Lu doped HZO films with a cerium oxide layer. Compared with the Lu doped HZO film without the CeOx coating layer, the Lu doped HZO film with the CeOx coating layer has a larger remanent polarization (2Pr = 34.72 µC cm−2) and presents weaker wake-up behavior, which result from the higher orthogonal phase ratio and the lower oxygen vacancy of the CeOx coated Lu doped HZO film. In addition, the CeOx coating can remarkably improve the fatigue resistance and retention performance of the Lu doped HZO films. It is hoped that the results can provide an effective approach for the realization of high-performance and highly reliable hafnium oxide based ferroelectric thin films.

Broom-like CeO 2 /Sn@C nonmagnetic absorbers were rationally designed. • Surface Sn spheres create heterointerfaces and strengthen polarization loss. • An ultrabroad EAB of 9.11 GHz is achieved at 2.57 mm thickness. • RL min reaches −60.68 dB with only 10 wt% absorber loading. • DFT confirms charge redistribution across CeO 2 /C/Sn heterojunctions. Broom-like CeO 2 @C composites with Sn doping and surface modification by metallic Sn spheres are successfully synthesized. At a Ce/Sn ratio of 10:1, metallic Sn spheres precipitate on the surface of CeO 2 /Sn@C. At an annealing temperature of 800 °C and a filler loading of 10 wt%, CeO 2 /Sn@C composite achieves a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −60.68 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 9.11 GHz at a matching thickness of only 2.57 mm. Compared with CeO 2 @C, the conductivity of CeO 2 /Sn@C increases from 0.2407 to 0.5383 S∙m −1 , which lead to a remark improvement in absorption performance. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are further performed to analyze and verify the electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption mechanisms. Both experimental and theoretical results confirm that the introduction of metallic Sn substantially improves the microwave absorption properties of CeO 2 @C, rendering it a high-efficiency EMW absorbing material with promising application prospects. The table of contents entry: Broom-like CeO 2 @C composites modified by Sn doping and metallic Sn surface precipitation are constructed through solvothermal synthesis and thermal treatment. The optimized CeO 2 /Sn@C composite exhibits enhanced electromagnetic wave absorption behavior, which is mainly attributed to improved conductivity, interfacial polarization, and multiple scattering effects. A ROS-scavenging and anti-inflammatory nanoplatform (Hes-CeO₂@PVP/P188) co-loaded with hesperetin and cerium oxide was constructed for dry eye disease (DED) therapy. • The nanoparticles show uniform size (~110 nm), good water solubility, high biocompatibility and negligible hemolysis. • Hes-CeO₂@PVP/P188 exerts synergistic antioxidant effect by mimicking SOD/CAT activities to scavenge ROS and preserve mitochondrial membrane potential. • In DED mice, the nanosystem reduces corneal epithelial damage, promotes tear secretion and alleviates inflammatory infiltration. • The nanoparticles inhibit TNF-α–iNOS–MMP-9 cascade and upregulate HO-1/SOD 2 , breaking the pathological vicious circle of DED. Dry eye disease (DED) is a prevalent chronic ocular disorder characterized by tear film instability and oxidative stress. Herein, a Hes-CeO₂@PVP/P188 nanoparticle system co-loaded with the natural flavonoid hesperetin (Hes) and cerium oxide nanozyme (CeO₂) was developed to achieve synergistic antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, thereby effectively alleviating DED. The nanoparticles exhibited a uniform size (~110 nm), good aqueous solubility, and biocompatibility. In vitro assays demonstrated that Hes-CeO₂@PVP/P188 can effectively scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS), protect cells from H₂O₂-induced oxidative damage, promote wound healing, and preserve mitochondrial membrane potential. In a benzalkonium chloride-induced murine model of DED, the Hes-CeO₂@PVP/P188 nanoparticles significantly reduced corneal epithelial defects, enhanced tear secretion, alleviated inflammatory infiltration, downregulated pro-inflammatory cytokines (including TNF-α, iNOS, and MMP-9), and upregulated the expression of antioxidant markers (including HO-1 and SOD 2 ). The nanoparticles suppressed the TNF-α–iNOS–MMP-9 cascade and effectively broke the pathological vicious cycle of DED. Importantly, the therapeutic efficacy was comparable or superior to that of commercial 0.05% cyclosporine A eye drops in certain indicators. The Hes-CeO₂@PVP/P188 nanoparticles represented a promising dual-functional nanotherapeutic strategy for the treatment of DED. Semiconductor-based heterostructure photocatalyst attracts extensive attention because of its excellent interface charge transfer/separation ability. Here, the β-Bi 2 O 3 /CeO 2 heterostructure photocatalysts are fabricated via a simple mechanochemical couple with thermal decomposition strategy. The introduction of CeO 2 can not only stabilize the phase of β-Bi 2 O 3 but also construct a heterojunction at the interface, resulting in the improved visible light response capability and efficient transfer and separation of photo-generated charges. Besides, the increased specific surface area and pore volume increase the active sites to accelerate the adsorption and mass transfer process. As a result, the β-Bi 2 O 3 /CeO 2 heterostructure photocatalyst shows remarkably enhanced photocatalytic performance towards malachite green (MG) degradation under visible-light irradiation compared with the Bi 2 O 3 and CeO 2 . The degradation efficiency of MG over the optimized β-Bi 2 O 3 /CeO 2 heterostructure reaches up to 97.5% after 2 h of visible-light irradiation. This work provides a new approach for the rational design of heterojunction photocatalyst combined with phase and interface engineering and opens up a potential avenue for efficient application of Bi 2 O 3 photocatalyst for efficient energy conversion.

The strategic design of atomic-efficient catalysts through targeted bonding engineering remains pivotal for advancing oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in metal-air batteries. This study pioneers a comparative investigation between surface-engineering Ce O bond construction (Ce surface decorated MnO 2 , Ce-SD-MnO 2 ) and conventional bulk doping strategy (Ce bulk doping MnO 2 , Ce-BD-MnO 2 ), revealing fundamental structure-activity relationships. Advanced High-Angle Annular Dark-Field Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (HAADF-STEM) and X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS) analyses demonstrate that surface-anchored Ce atoms induce localized lattice distortion in Ce-SD-MnO 2 , generating synergistic surface defects and oxygen vacancies, while Ce-BD-MnO 2 merely causes non-active lattice expansion. First-principles calculations unveil that surface Ce O motifs optimally modulate the Mn d -band center, simultaneously enhancing charge density near the Fermi level and reducing *OOH adsorption energy. These atomic-level synergies empower Ce-SD-MnO 2 with exceptional ORR activity and durability. Implemented in Magnesium-air batteries, the surface-engineered catalyst delivers excellent performance: 120.7 mW cm −2 peak power density (46.3 % enhancement vs bulk-doped counterpart) and 98.5 % voltage retention after 11 h, establishing new stability benchmarks. This work provides fundamental insights into surface bond engineering for breaking the atomic efficiency-stability trade-off, offering a universal paradigm for designing energy conversion catalysts.

The low-temperature water-gas shift (WGS) reaction confronts critical challenges of sluggish kinetics, inadequate H 2 yield and CO conversion, necessitating the development of high-activity catalysts to effective clean energy production with reduced energy consumption. In this study, we systematically investigate the relationship between the physicochemical properties of Cu-based catalysts supported on CeO 2 with tailored morphologies (nanorods, nanospheres, and nanocubes) and catalytic performance. Cu-CeO 2 (R) achieves 52.3 % CO conversion and 79.88 mL/gH 2 O H 2 production at 370 °C—nearly twice those of Cu-CeO 2 (P) under identical conditions—with an apparent activation energy of 55.25 kJ·mol −1 . This outstanding performance stems from proper oxygen vacancy concentration (OVC, 2.23 × 10 21 cm −3 ) and ordered Cu + -[O v ] Ce 3+ interfacial sites induced by strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) within Ce 1-x Cu x O 2 solid solutions. In contrast, Cu-CeO 2 (S) and Cu-CeO 2 (C) display relatively lower maximum CO conversions (45.97 % at 410 °C and 43.7 % at 370 °C, respectively), due to excessive defect oxygen (34.41 % and 44.89 %) that strongly adsorbs reaction intermediates, postponing the WGS rate by 15–20 %. In-situ spectroscopy reveals that CeO 2 morphology modulates oxygen vacancy (O v ) distribution and Cu Ce interfacial structures, giving rise to distinct adsorption states and binding strengths of CO/CO 2 on Cu/CuO x nanoclusters with varied valence states and dispersions. Cu-CeO 2 (S) and Cu-CeO 2 (C) exhibit complex carbonation pathways, featuring dynamic evolution of intermediates from monodentate to bidentate to polymeric carbonates, attributed to surface site diversity and cross-interactions of Cu sites. This work elucidates the morphology-activity relationship of Cu-CeO 2 catalysts, providing insights for the rational design of highly active low-temperature WGS catalysts.

The development of antimicrobial packaging materials serves as an effective means to enhance food preservation and mitigate food waste. This study had developed a near-infrared (NIR)-controlled smart responsive system for the release of antibacterial cinnamon essential oils (CEO), which involves immobilizing CEO within the interlayer of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and decorating it with graphene oxide (GO), designated as LDH@CEO-GO. LDH@CEO-GO was prepared by co-precipitation method. The release kinetics of CEO at various temperatures was investigated, revealing that the release dynamics conform to the Fickian diffusion mechanism. Under NIR light serves as an intelligent switch that can regulate temperature, thereby facilitating the release of CEO. Antibacterial tests demonstrated that LDH@CEO-GO exhibited good antibacterial properties, achieving inhibition rates of 77.5 % and 68.3 % against E. coli and S. aureus, respectively. NIR irradiation, the inhibition rates increased to 98.3 % and 97.2 %. Through practical exploration of strawberry preservation, it was found that under NIR light stimulation, LDH@CEO-GO can effectively enhance the preservation of strawberries.

First synthesis of Mn-CeO 2 @ZnGa₂O₄:Cr³⁺, Eu³⁺ composite. • Trimodal sarcosine detection using phosphorescence, peroxidase mimicry, and photothermal TMB. • Smartphone-based mobile tool enables on-site sarcosine detection. • Paper-based chip sensor simplifies sarcosine detection, making it facile and convenient. Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second most common cancer in men, while sarcosine levels have profound implications for the state of prostate cancer. Herein, we have designed a smart paper-chip sensor based on Mn-CeO₂ nanozyme@persistent luminescent nanoparticles (PLNPs) for trimodality fluorescence, colorimetric, and photothermal detection of sarcosine. The PLNPs were prepared as ZnGa₂O₄: 0.5% Cr 3+ , 1.5% Eu 3+ and then integrating Mn-CeO₂ nanozyme. The composite was integrated onto a polypropylene (PP) substrate as the paper chip. In pa1rticular, PLNPs exhibited the afterglow emission for eliminating the interference from the autofluorescence of biological samples; In the presence of both sarcosine and sarcosine oxidase, red phosphorescence is restored, for phosphorescence detection. The nanozyme of Mn-doped CeO₂ exhibit enhanced peroxidase activity, rapidly converting colorless 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into a blue form as oxidized TMB, which also possesses photothermal conversion capabilities, enabling both colorimetric and photothermal detection. Using a smartphone, this sensor enables on-site detection of sarcosine in serum with a detection range of 0–10 μM with extremely low limits of detection (LOD) as 1.88 μM for fluorescence; 0.08 μM for colorimetry; and 1.88 μM for photothermal mode, with all RSD below 5%. Overall, we have successfully designed for the detection of sarcosine in serum. The sensor's low cost, high sensitivity, and portability have been validated, thereby improving treatment success rates and survival rates for patients with early-stage prostate cancer. Scheme 1. Schematic illustration of a smartphone-based Mn-CeO₂@persistent luminescence nanoparticles (PLNPs) paper-based sensor for triple-mode detection of sarcosine. ZnGa₂O₄: Cr 3+ , Eu 3+ (ZCEGO) was fabricated as PLNPs featuring red emission at 700 nm. The PLNPs were surface-functionalized with Mn-CeO₂ nanozymes as peroxidase mimics, and the resultant nanocomposite was further incorporated onto a paper-based substrate. In the presence of sarcosine and sarcosine oxidase (SOX), H₂O₂ is generated. In Zone 1 (yellow section), the PLNPs are exposed, enabling phosphorescence detection. Meanwhile, in the presence of TMB, TMB in Zone 2 (white section) is oxidized to oxTMB, enabling colorimetric detection. The oxTMB can be used for photothermal detection upon irradiation with an 808 nm laser. Quantitative analysis of sarcosine is achieved using a smartphone. Residual sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in aquatic environments poses risks to ecosystems and human health. Due to their exceptional mechanical strength and chemical durability, ceramic membranes (CMs) provide a suitable platform for heterogeneous catalytic oxidation. The synthesis of Fe 2 O 3 -CeO 2 @CM for catalyzing ozone oxidation to remove SMX was done in this study using a hydrothermal in-situ growth technique. The findings showed that when the Fe/Ce molar ratio was 1:3, the calcination temperature was 500°C, and the catalyst loading was 8.4 mg/g, the SMX was totally removed in 10 min in the presence of Fe 2 O 3 -CeO 2 @CM. The characterisation results showed that the material comprised FeCe solid solution and Fe 2 O 3 particles, exhibiting multiple valence states (Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ , Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ ). Based on the quenching experiments, ·OH, ·O 2 - , and 1 O 2 radicals were shown to be involved, with ·O 2 - and 1 O 2 playing primary roles. Mechanistically, the Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ and Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ species in the catalyst exhibited favourable redox cycling, promoting oxygen vacancy regeneration and serving as key active sites for catalysing O 3 decomposition. Furthermore, the system demonstrated excellent cycling stability, maintaining SMX removal rates above 95% after five cycles and achieving 94% removal in actual wastewater, effectively mitigating membrane fouling. An effective and reliable technique for eliminating antibiotics from wastewater is presented in this work.

A flower-like CeO₂/BiOCl Z-scheme heterojunction was constructed for efficient charge separation. • The catalyst degraded 99.6% RhB (600 mg/L), 93.3% CR (100 mg/L), and 90.3% TC (10 mg/L) under visible-light irradiation. • The photocatalyst achieved 98.9% antibacterial efficiency against E. coli . • DFT, ESR, and trapping experiments confirmed the Z-scheme charge-transfer mechanism. The construction of Z-scheme heterojunctions is an effective strategy for enhancing photocatalytic performance by promoting charge separation while maintaining a robust redox capacity. In this study, we present a flower-like CeO₂/flake-like BiOCl heterojunction (designated as 2-BC) synthesized using a simple method. 2-BC demonstrated remarkable efficacy in degrading high concentrations of Rhodamine B (RhB, 600 mg/L, 99.6%) and efficiently removed Congo Red (CR, 100 mg/L, 93.3%) and Tetracycline (TC, 10 mg/L, 90.3%). Additionally, it exhibited exceptional antibacterial activity, with a kill rate of 98.9% against Escherichia coli ( E. coli) under illumination, and notable stability, retaining 83.5% of its initial activity after five cycles. The superior performance of 2-BC was attributed to a Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism, which was supported by density functional theory calculations and radical trapping experiments. This mechanism ensures efficient charge carrier separation while preserving strong redox potentials in both semiconductors, thereby enhancing the generation of active species (•O₂⁻, h⁺, and •OH). Our findings suggest that 2-BC is a stable and highly efficient Z-scheme photocatalyst with significant potential for the treatment of organic and biological pollutants in aquatic environments.
