Microplastics and nonylphenol (NP) are considered as emerging pollutant and have attracted wide attention, while their combined toxicity on aquatic organisms is barely researched. Therefore, the combined toxicity influence of NP with three types of microplastics containing polyethylene (PE1000, 13 μm and PE, 150 μm), polyamide (PA1000, 13 μm and PA, 150 μm) polystyrene (PS, 150 μm) on microalgae Chlorella pyrenoidosa was analyzed. Both growth inhibition, chlorophyll fluorescence, superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), and catalase (CAT) were determined. We found that single microplastics and NP both inhibited algal growth, thereby causing oxidative stress . The order of inhibition effect in single microplastics experiment was PE1000 > PA1000 > PE ≈ PS > PA. The combined toxicity experiment results indicated that the presence of microplastics had positive effect in terms of alleviating NP toxicity to C. pyrenoidosa , and the microplastics adsorption capacity to NP was the dominant contributing factor for this effect. According to the independent action model, the combined toxicity was antagonistic. Because the negative effect of smaller size microplastics on algal growth was aggravated with prolonged exposure time, the optimum effect of microplastics alleviated NP toxicity was PA1000 at 48 h, while this effect was substituted by PA at 96 h during combined toxicity. Thus, the toxicity of smaller size microplastics has a nonnegligible influence on combined toxicity. This study confirms that microplastics significantly affected the toxicity of organic pollutants on microalgae. Further research on the combined toxicity of smaller size microplastics with pollutants in chronic toxicity is needed.

The ecological effects of antibiotics in surface water have attracted increasing research attention. In this study, we investigated the combined ecotoxicity of erythromycin (ERY) and roxithromycin (ROX) on the microalgae, Chlorella pyrenoidosa , and the removal of ERY and ROX during the exposure. The calculated 96-h median effect concentration (EC 50 ) values of ERY, ROX, and their mixture (2:1 w/w) were 7.37, 3.54, and 7.91 mg∙L -1 , respectively. However, the predicted EC 50 values of ERY+ROX mixture were 5.42 and 1.51 mg∙L -1 , based on the concentration addition and independent action models, respectively. This demonstrated the combined toxicity of ERY+ ROX mixture showed an antagonistic effect on Chlorella pyrenoidosa . During the 14-d culture, low-concentration (EC 10 ) treatments with ERY, ROX, and their mixture caused the growth inhibition rate to decrease during the first 12 d and increase slightly at 14 d. In contrast, high-concentration (EC 50 ) treatments significantly inhibited microalgae growth ( p < 0.05). Changes in the total chlorophyll contents, SOD and CAT activities, and MDA contents of microalgae suggested that individual treatments with ERY and ROX induced higher oxidative stress than combined treatments. After the 14-d culture time, residual Ery in low and high concentration Ery treatments were 17.75% and 74.43%, and the residual Rox were 76.54% and 87.99%, but the residuals were 8.03% and 73.53% in ERY+ ROX combined treatment. These indicated that antibiotic removal efficiency was higher in combined treatments than that in individual treatments, especially at low concentrations (EC 10 ). Correlation analysis suggested that there was a significant negative correlation between the antibiotic removal efficiency of C. pyrenoidosa and their SOD activity and MDA content, and the enhanced antibiotic removal ability of microalgae benefited from increased cell growth and chlorophyll content. Findings in this study contribute to predicting ecological risk of coexisting antibiotics in aquatic environment, and to improving biological treatment technology of antibiotics in wastewater.

The combined effect of polystyrene microplastics (mPS) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP), a common plastic additive, on the microalgae Chlorella pyrenoidosa was investigated in the present study. The 96 h-IC 50 value of DBP was 2.41 mg L −1 . Polystyrene microplastics exhibited size-dependent inhibitory effect to C. pyrenoidosa , with the 96 h-IC 50 at 6.90 and 7.19 mg L −1 for 0.1 and 0.55 μm mPS respectively, but little toxicity was observed for 5 μm mPS. The interaction parameter ρ based on the response additive response surface (RARS) model varied from −0.309 to 5.845, indicating the interaction pattern varying with exposure concentrations of chemical mixtures. A modified RARS model (taking ρ as a function of exposure concentration) was constructed and could well predict the combined toxicity of mPS and DBP. More than 20% reduction of DBP was observed at 20 mg L −1 mPS, while 1 mg L −1 mPS had no significant effect on the bioavailability of DBP at different sampling time points. Volume, morphological complexity and chlorophyll fluorescence intensity of microalgal cells were disturbed by both DBP and mPS. The antagonistic effect of high concentrations of mPS might be partially attributed to the combination of hetero- and homo-aggregation and the reduced bioavailability of DBP. The overall findings of the present study profiled the combined toxic effects of mPS and DBP on marine phytoplankton species which will be helpful for further evaluation of ecological risks of mPS and DBP in marine environment.

The photodegradation products (PDPs) of antibiotics in the aquatic environment received increasing concern, but their chronic effects on microalgae remain unclear. This study initially focused on examining the acute effects of erythromycin (ERY), then explored the chronic impacts of ERY PDPs on Chlorella pyrenoidosa . ERY of 4.0 − 32 mg/L ERY notably inhibited the cell growth and chlorophyll synthesis. The determined 96 h median effective concentration of ERY to C. pyrenoidosa was 11.78 mg/L. Higher concentrations of ERY induced more serious oxidative damage, antioxidant enzymes alleviated the oxidative stress. 6 PDPs (PDP749, PDP747, PDP719, PDP715, PDP701 and PDP557) were identified in the photodegradation process of ERY. The predicted combined toxicity of PDPs increased in the first 3 h, then decreased. Chronic exposure showed a gradual decreasing inhibition on microalgae growth and chlorophyll content. The acute effect of ERY PDPs manifested as growth stimulation, but the chronic effect manifested as growth inhibition. The malonaldehyde contents decreased with the degradation time of ERY at 7, 14 and 21 d. However, the malonaldehyde contents of ERY PDPs treatments were elevated compared to those in the control group after 21 d. Risk assessment still need to consider the potential toxicity of degradation products under long-term exposure.

Roxithromycin (ROX) has received increasing concern due to its large usage, ubiquitous detection in environment and high ecotoxicology risk. This study investigated the acute and chronic effects of ROX on the growth, chlorophyll, antioxidant enzymes, and malonaldehyde (MDA) content of Chlorella pyrenoidosa , as well as the removal mechanism of ROX during microalgae cultivation. The calculated 96 h median effective concentration of ROX on yield (E y C 50 ) and specific growth rate (E r C 50 ) of C. pyrenoidosa was 0.81 and 2.87 mg/L, respectively. After 96 h exposure, 1.0 ~ 2.0 mg/L of ROX significantly inhibited the synthesis of chlorophyll and promoted the activities of SOD and CAT ( p < 0.05). The MDA content increased with the ROX concentration increasing from 0.5 ~ 1.0 mg/L, and then decreased to 105.76% of the control exposure to 2.0 mg/L ROX, demonstrating the oxidative damage could be moderated by the upregulation of SOD and CAT activities. During the 21 d chronic exposure, low concentration of ROX (0.1 and 0.25 mg/L) showed no significant effect on the growth and chlorophyll content of algae during the first 14 d, but significantly inhibited the growth of algae and the synthesis of chlorophyll at 21 d ( p < 0.05 or p < 0.01). 1.0 mg/L ROX significantly inhibited the growth of microalgae during 3 ~ 21 d and the synthesis of chlorophyll at 7 ~ 21 d. High concentration and long-term exposure of low concentration of ROX caused the SOD and CAT activities and MDA content to increase, demonstrating a higher level of oxidative damage of microalgae. During the first 14 d, abiotic removal of ROX played a more important role, contributing about 12.21% ~ 21.37% of ROX removal. After 14 d, the biodegradation of ROX by C. pyrenoidosa gradually became a more important removal mechanism, contributing about 45.99% ~ 53.30% of ROX removal at 21 d. Bio-adsorption and bioaccumulation both played minor roles in the removal of ROX during algae cultivation.

The combined effect of polystyrene (PS) particles and triphenyltin chloride (TPTCl) to the green algae Chlorella pyrenoido s a was studied. The 96 h IC 50 of TPTCl to the green algae C. pyrenoidosa was 30.64 μg/L. The toxicity of PS particles to C. pyrenoidosa was size-dependent, with the 96 h IC 50 at 9.10 mg/L for 0.55 μm PS but no toxicity observed for 5.0 μm PS. The exposure to 0.55 μm PS led to damage on structure of algal cells, which could in turn cause inhibition on photosynthesis and population growth of the green algae. TPTCl concentrations in test medium were lowered by 15–19% at presence of 0.55 μm PS particles, indicating a reduced bioavailability of TPTCl. In spite of this reduced bioavailability, the presence of PS increased the toxicity of TPTCl, which might be attributed to facilitated uptake of TPTCl by the green algae after the damage of cell structure. The overall results of the present study provided important information on the effect of PS on the bioavailability and toxicity of TPTCl to phytoplankton species.

In this study,Chlorella pyrenoidosawas cultured with different concentrations of Cr(III) and Cr(VI), and the changes in biomass, lipid content, protein content and total sugar content ofChlorella pyrenoidosaunder different culture conditions were detected. The effects of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) on the intracellular antioxidant system and related key enzymes of lipid synthesis were analyzed. The results showed that appropriate Cr(III) and Cr(VI) concentrations could makeChlorella pyrenoidosaregulate the contents of SOD, POD, ASA, CAT and GSH in cells, improve the enzyme activity of ACC and promote lipid synthesis. The aim was to investigate the mechanism of lipid synthesis by analyzing the distribution of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) in algal cells. The lipid content ofChlorella pyrenoidosareached its highest level at 50.43 wt% and 38.00 wt% when both Cr(III) and Cr(VI) concentrations in the culture environment were 0.5 mg/L. These values were 1.37 and 1.03 times higher than the control group, respectively. The addition of appropriate Cr(III) and Cr(VI) concentrations can increase ME enzyme activity and decrease PEPC enzyme activity, shorten the biomass accumulation cycle and prolong the lipid synthesis cycle.

The intention of the present study was to develop a green and sustainable extraction procedure to obtain lutein from microalgae. A series of acidic and polyol based deep eutectic solvents (DESs) were synthesized to establish a novel pretreatment process. Response surface methodology (RSM) was adopted to analyzese the significance of pretreatment parameters with high prediction levels of lutein yield. Amongst all the DESs-assisted pretreatment, polyol based ChCl:Gly (1:2) DES obtained the maximum lutein yield at the following optimal conditions: biomass-to-DES ratio, 3:34.6; temperature, 26 °C; time, 40 min. Lutein extraction was optimized by one-factor-at-a-time approach, and results showed that 1.35 mg/g lutein could obtained at 40 °C for 20 min with a biomass-to-solvent ratio of 30 mg/mL. The recyclability of the DES ChCl:Gly (1:2) was also tested and showed satisfactory results up to three cycles. The mechanism of lutein extraction using ethyl acetate was explored by molecular dynamics.

The hazardous potential of haloquinolines (HQLs) is becoming an issue of great concern due to its wide and long-term usage in many personal care products. We examined the growth inhibition, structure-activity relationship, and toxicity mechanism of 33 HQLs on Chlorella pyrenoidosa using the 72-h algal growth inhibition assay, three-dimensional quantitative structure–activity relationship (3D-QSAR), and metabolomics. We found that the IC 50 (half maximal inhibitory concentration) values for 33 compounds ranged from 4.52 to > 150 mg·L −1 , most tested compounds were toxic (1 mg·L −1 < IC 50 < 10 mg·L −1 ) or harmful (10 mg·L −1 < IC 50 < 100 mg·L −1 ) for the aquatic ecosystem . Hydrophobic properties of HQLs dominate their toxicity. Halogen atoms with large volume appear at the 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7-positions of the quinoline ring to significantly increase the toxicity. In algal cells, HQLs can block diverse carbohydrates, lipids, and amino acid metabolism pathways, thereby resulting in energy usage, osmotic pressure regulation, membrane integrity, oxidative stress disorder, thus fatally damaging algal cells. Therefore, our results provide insight into the toxicity mechanism and ecological risk of HQLs.

Metallurgical slag such as solid waste generated in the steel industry carries environmental pollution risks, but it is rich in nutrients required by microalgae. Metallurgical slag used for carbon capture and biomass energy conversion has multiple benefits: (i) reduction and harmless treatment of metallurgical solid waste, (ii) assisting in carbon neutrality by efficient carbon fixation, and (iii) production of biodiesel from CO 2 . In this study, AOD, BOF, BFS, HVS, and VTS slag were applied to culture Chlorella pyrenoidosa ( C. pyrenoidosa ) with the regulation of growth, carbon fixation, and lipid synthesis. An excellent fixed amount of CO 2 with 94.59 mg is obtained from C. pyrenoidosa biomass at BOF slag added (mass ratio of CO 2 captured/microalgae/slag with 1.99/1.00/10.53) since high Ca/Mg mass ratio of 419 (8.38 mg/L Ca and 0.02 mg/L Mg), no Cr and low concentration of Al (0.04 mg/L) contribute to regulating antioxidant enzyme activity (SOD and POD) to resist ROS and improving PEPC activity to reduce carbon flux toward lipid to promote biomass synthesis. Both metal concentrations from Ca (5.86 mg/L), Mg (0.05 mg/L), Al (0.42 mg/L), and Cr (0.006 mg/L) and suitable pH (10.53) in AOD leaching solution at solid/liquid ratio of 0.5 g/L change carbon flow toward efficient lipid synthesis (47.07 wt%) by continuously providing raw materials and energy by regulating ACC, ME, and PEPC activities. High value-added biodiesel with high concentrations of C16 and C18 methyl esters from lipid of C. pyrenoidosa is achieved, following other ecological and economic benefits including 197 mg CO 2 captured and 2198 mg AOD applied with harmless. In this study, C. pyrenoidosa is cultured with elements from metallurgical slag solid waste, which promotes C. pyrenoidosa efficient carbon fixation to assist in carbon neutrality, and provides guidance for CO 2 conversion to high-value-added products with low cost.

Chlorella pyrenoidosa is a protein-rich microalga (> 40% dry weight), and its protein extraction is challenging due to its multilayered cell wall. In this study, the protein extraction efficiency and structural disruption of high-pressure disruption (HPD), alkaline, ultrasonication, and enzymatic methods were compared. At 40 kpsi, HPD achieved 88% protein yield—outperforming alkaline (70%), ultrasonication (64%), and enzymatic (34%) methods, without evident low-molecular-weight fragmentation (based on SDS-PAGE), and maintaining a biological value of 70.1. Instantaneous pressurization fragmented cells into 0.1–10 μm particles, releasing both intracellular proteins and cell wall components. Monosaccharide analysis indicated the concurrent release of structural sugars, with HPD extracts containing 191 g·kg −1 total monosaccharides (4× aqueous extracts), including cell wall-specific muramic acid (14.7 g·kg −1 ) and N -acetylglucosamine (18.4 g·kg −1 ), alongside intracellular glucose and galactose. These findings are consistent with extensive physical disruption of the multilayered cell wall and enhanced intracellular protein release. In contrast, alkaline treatment degraded the outer sheath ( N -acetylglucosamine: 17.4 g·kg −1 ) but resulted in protein aggregation, while ultrasonication created surface pores and released protein content. Enzymatic methods (e.g., Viscozyme® L) selectively hydrolyzed surface polysaccharides without penetrating deeper layers. Scanning electron microscopy and particle size analysis confirmed extensive structural disintegration after HPD treatment. Overall, these results demonstrate the effectiveness of HPD under the tested conditions for promoting protein extraction from C. pyrenoidosa . The potential integration of mechanical disruption and enzymatic hydrolysis warrants further investigation to evaluate possible complementary effects and process efficiency.

Electric furnace slag was highly productive and rich in elements, which can be used as a nutrient source for microalgae growth. The regulation of growth and lipid synthesis of Chlorella pyrenoidosa ( C. pyrenoidosa ) in electric arc furnace slag leaching solution with or without citric acid was investigated to develop efficient lipid production method with low cost. High lipid content of 45.89 wt% from C. pyrenoidosa with adding electric arc furnace slag leaching solution ≤40% into BG11 was obtained due to C. pyrenoidosa increasing lipid accumulation to resist oxidative stress caused by heavy metals in electric arc furnace slag (Ca of 5.13 mg/L, Fe of 0.05 mg/L, Mn of 0.12 mg/L and Cr of 0.01 mg/L). Exogenous citric acid can improve the ability of C. pyrenoidosa to resist heavy metal toxicity with high biomass content (0.44 g/L) achieved. The cooperation of multiple metal ions in electric arc furnace slag shortened the biomass accumulation stage and prolonged and speeded up the lipid synthesis stage of C. pyrenoidosa by modulating PEPC, ACC and ME activities . This study provided guidance for the industrialization of low-cost lipid-rich microalgae and metallurgical solid waste treatment .
