Application of poly (aniline-co-o-methoxyaniline) as energy storage material

Ke Qu,Yuqi Bai,Xiyan Gao,Miao Deng

Graphite and multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) served as dual dopants to prepare the composite with poly (aniline- co - o -methoxyaniline) copolymer electrochemically. The aniline to o -methoxyaniline monomer feed ratio was screened, with 4 to 1 monomer ratio being optimal. The supercapacitive properties of the prepared dual dopant-doped composite as electrode materials have been investigated and yielded a large specific capacitance of 535.0 F/g under 1.0 A/g current density and showed excellent rate performance, even with large current densities applied (up to 50.0 A/g). The composite remained to give a relatively stable specific capacitance of more than 200.0 F/g after 500 galvanostatic charge-discharge cycles, which afforded better and/or comparable performance compared with other polyaniline-based composite. The composite’s morphological features were characterized with scanning electron microscopy. The results from this study will be significant for the development of conducting polymer-based energy storage materials.

Silica accelerates the selective hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol on cobalt catalysts

Wang Lingxiang,Guan Erjia,Wang Yeqing,Wang Liang,Gong Zhongmiao,Cui Yi,Meng Xiangju,Gates Bruce C.,Xiao Feng-Shou

The reaction pathways on supported catalysts can be tuned by optimizing the catalyst structures, which helps the development of efficient catalysts. Such design is particularly desired for CO 2 hydrogenation, which is characterized by complex pathways and multiple products. Here, we report an investigation of supported cobalt, which is known for its hydrocarbon production and ability to turn into a selective catalyst for methanol synthesis in CO 2 hydrogenation which exhibits good activity and stability. The crucial technique is to use the silica, acting as a support and ligand, to modify the cobalt species via Co‒O‒SiO n linkages, which favor the reactivity of spectroscopically identified *CH 3 O intermediates, that more readily undergo hydrogenation to methanol than the C‒O dissociation associated with hydrocarbon formation. Cobalt catalysts in this class offer appealing opportunities for optimizing selectivity in CO 2 hydrogenation and producing high-grade methanol. By identifying this function of silica, we provide support for rationally controlling these reaction pathways.

Dual role of halloysite nanotubes in the synthesis of the complex with CoAl2O4 and tetracycline degradation

Yuqi Zhang,Yunan Zhong,Pengfei Zhang,Yang Zheng,Chunfang Du

Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) served as the support and aluminum source for in-situ synthesizing CoAl 2 O 4 /HNTs (CAO/HNTs), which acted as an effective catalyst to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for degrading tetracycline hydrochloride (TC). To achieve the optimal removal performance, various parameters were optimized. The final CAO/HNTs demonstrated a high degradation efficiency of 88 % toward TC within 40 min, which was 1.69 times as high as that of pure CAO. The existence of HNTs made CAO highly dispersed, increasing the number of exposed active sites and the contact opportunities between CAO and TC molecules, which enabled CAO to participate in the reaction more effectively and thus improved the degradation efficiency. Additionally, the formation of Co-O-Al bonds facilitated the growth of CAO into a three-dimensional (3D) spherical structure with more active sites other than the tetrahedral structure on HNTs. In the CAO/HNTs/PMS system, O 2 •– and 1 O 2 contributed mostly to the catalytic process. This work not only provides a novel catalyst for the treatment of antibiotic pollution, but also offers an innovative strategy for fabricating functional materials on the basis of chemical composition and morphology characteristics of natural minerals.

ZIF-8-induced selectivity reprogramming of Co₃O₄ nanorod arrays for ethanol sensing

Chen Wang,Shihao Wang,Yunmeng Qu,Pengfei Cheng,Yinglin Wang

Developing ethanol-selective gas sensors remains challenging because structurally and chemically related volatile organic compounds (VOCs) often induce similar responses on semiconductor metal oxide surfaces. Here, we report a zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8)-enabled strategy for reprogramming gas selectivity rather than simple response enhancement by constructing Co₃O₄@ZIF-8 core–shell nanorod arrays. The ZIF-8 layer was deposited on Co₃O₄ nanorods through a seed-assisted conversion route to regulate gas transport and interfacial adsorption. Compared with pristine Co₃O₄ sensor, ZIF-8 functionalization induced a distinct selectivity shift from acetone-preferred to ethanol-preferred sensing (8.7 toward 100 ppm ethanol at 225 °C) and improved humidity tolerance due to the hydrophobicity of ZIF-8. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed stronger ethanol adsorption on ZIF-8 than acetone adsorption, supporting preferential ethanol enrichment within the ZIF-8 shell. This work establishes ZIF-8 functionalization as an effective route for engineering ethanol selectivity in Co₃O₄ sensors and provides insight into MOF-assisted selectivity reprogramming in MOS chemiresistive gas sensors. Tandem Co–O dual sites on halloysite with promoted reaction kinetics for sulfur reduction

Qiang Zhang,Yinyin Qian,Ji-Jun Zou,Ruijie Gao,Huaming Yang

Facilitating sulfur reduction reaction (SRR) is a promising pathway to tackle the polysulfide shuttle effect and enhance the electrochemical performance of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Catalysts with a solo active site can reduce a reaction barrier of a certain transition-intermediate, but the linear scaling relationship between multi-intermediates still obstructs overall SRR. Herein, we construct tandem Co–O dual sites with accelerating SRR kinetics by loading highly dispersed cobalt sulfide clusters on halloysite. This catalyst features Co with upshifted d -orbital and O with downshifted p-orbital, which cooperatively adsorb long-chain polysulfide and dissociate an S–S bond, thus achieving both optimal adsorption–desorption strength and reduced conversion energy barrier of multi-intermediates in SRR. The Li-S coin batteries using the electrocatalyst endows a high specific capacity of 1224.3 mAh g −1 at 0.2 C after 200 cycles, and enhances cycling stability with a low-capacity decay rate of 0.03% per cycle at 1 C after 1000 cycles. Moreover, the strategy of the tandem Co–O dual sites is further verified in a practical Li-S pouch battery that realizes 1014.1 mAh g −1 for 100 cycles, which opens up a novel avenue for designing electrocatalysts to accelerate multi-step reactions.

Constructing Chainmail-Structured CoP/C Nanospheres as Highly Active Anodic Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Yang Nan,Tianpeng Liu,Wenhao Liu,Dong Cao,Daojian Cheng

Constructing highly active and noble metal-free electrocatalysts is significant for the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, uniform carbon-coated CoP nanospheres (CoP/C) are developed by a direct impregnation coupling phosphorization approach. Importantly, CoP/C only takes a small overpotential of 230 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm–2 and displays a Tafel slope of 56.87 mV dec–1. Furthermore, the intrinsic activity of CoP/C is 21.44 times better than that of commercial RuO2 under an overpotential of 260 mV. In situ Raman spectroscopy studies revealed that a large number of generated Co–O and Co–OH species could facilitate the *OH adsorption, effectively accelerating the reaction kinetics. Meanwhile, the carbon shell with a large number of mesoporous pores acts as the chainmail of CoP, which could improve the active surface area of the catalyst and prevent the Co sites from oxidative dissolution. This work provides a facile and effective reference for the development of highly active and stable OER catalysts.

Electronic modulation at Co-O-Fe bridges in a dual-MOF heterostructure for efficient oxygen evolution

Xiaoxi Li,Xianyi Gou,Boon Tong Goh,Hong Du

Co-O-Fe electronic modulation lowers OER overpotential to 169 mV at 10 mA cm −2 . • Rapid interfacial charge transfer yields a low Tafel slope of 106.4 mV dec − ¹ mV dec −1 . • Fe-to-Co electron transfer optimizes the D-band center for OER intermediates. • Heterointerface prevents MOF aggregation and exposes abundant active sites. Overcoming the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains a primary bottleneck in advancing sustainable hydrogen generation technologies. Herein, a dual-metal-organic-framework (dual-MOF) heterostructure, ZnCo-ZIF@MIL-100 (denoted as ZM-3), was constructed via a one-step hydrothermal method, where MIL-100 frameworks were epitaxially grown on orthododecahedral ZnCo-ZIF templates. This core-shell heterostructure inherits the structural merits of both MOF phases, achieving 10 mA cm − ² at an overpotential of 169 mV with a Tafel slope of 106.4 mV dec − ¹ in 1.0 M KOH. Comprehensive characterisation (XRD, SEM/TEM, XPS, etc.) and electrochemical analysis verify that heterostructure formation triggers notable electron redistribution from Fe to Co centres, optimises interfacial charge transfer and boosts accessible catalytic sites. DFT calculations further confirm that interfacial Co-O-Fe bridge sites tune the adsorption energetics of oxygenated intermediates, reducing the energy barrier of the potential-determining step. This work offers an interfacial regulation strategy for developing advanced MOF-based oxygen evolution electrocatalysts. ZM-3 exhibits a low overpotential, a small Tafel slope (106.4 mV dec −1 ) and long-term stability for OER. Download: Download high-res image (202KB) Download: Download full-size image

Co-O activation of Co3O4 via both Mn doping and acid etching for efficient propane oxidation

Fengyi Wang,Yihao Wang,Jinshuo Zou,Gemeng Liang,Kaiqi Hou,Lining Liu,Zehui Lin,Ci Song,Shengyu Liu,Xingyun Li

Crystal structure and surface modulation of Co 3 O 4 catalyst holds great promise for the improvement of catalytic performance for propane oxidation. In this study, Mn doping in Co 3 O 4 was first adapted to introduce crystal defects. And acid etching was then used to orchestrate the surface properties of Mn doped Co 3 O 4 . The combination of both Mn doping and acid etching resulted in a distorted crystal structure, which significantly activates the Co-O bonds, obviously increasing the exposed active oxygen and enhancing the intrinsic oxidation ability. Consequently, as a catalyst for propane oxidation, Mn-Co 3 O 4 -H facilitates the acetate intermediate generation and its decomposition, resulting in an excellent oxidation activity with propane conversion rate 3.8 times higher than that of the pristine Co 3 O 4 catalyst at reaction temperature of 195 °C. Meanwhile, the catalyst demonstrates a stable hydrothermal performance with negligible deactivation during 30 h on-stream test. This study set an important paradigm for the structure and surface manipulation of Co 3 O 4 catalyst for efficient propane oxidation.

Nanoflower-engineered Co₃O₄@CoNi-LDO bimetallic oxide: A catalyst for revolutionizing hydrogen storage in LiAlH₄

Riguang Cheng,Zhaoyu Liu,Pantrangi Manasa,Zhongxian Zhao,Hongge Pan,Fen Xu,Lixian Sun,Federico Rosei

The inherent thermodynamic stability and slow kinetics of LiAlH₄ pose significant challenges for its practical application in hydrogen storage. This study addresses these limitations by introducing nanoflower-structured layered double oxides (Co₃O₄@CoNi-LDO) as a performance-enhancing catalyst. The Co₃O₄@CoNi-LDO was synthesized through a hydrothermal process followed by calcination and subsequently incorporated into LiAlH₄ via mechanical ball milling. Experimental results demonstrate that the addition of 7 wt% Co₃O₄@CoNi-LDO substantially improves the hydrogen desorption properties of LiAlH₄. The hydrogen release temperatures for the two-step desorption process are reduced to 85.1 °C and 177.0 °C, respectively, with a total hydrogen release of approximately 6.87 wt% below 300 °C. Moreover, the activation energy of the two desorption steps is lowered by 20.0% and 46.3% compared to pristine LiAlH₄. The modified material also exhibits superior rehydrogenation performance, absorbing approximately 0.64 wt% hydrogen within 5 h-markedly better than pristine LiAlH₄. Mechanistic studies reveal that the in-situ formation of catalytically active species, such as Al₁₃Co₄ and Al₀.₉Ni₄.₂₂, anchored on the LiAlH₄ matrix, plays a pivotal role in facilitating hydrogen transfer. These catalytic sites effectively reduce the energy barriers for hydrogen desorption, enhancing the kinetics of the process. This work highlights the potential of Co₃O₄@CoNi-LDO nanoflowers as a highly effective catalyst for improving the hydrogen storage capabilities of LiAlH₄, paving the way for its application in advanced energy storage systems.

Inverse Coprecipitation Directed Porous Core–Shell Mn–Co–O Catalyst for Efficient Low Temperature Propane Oxidation

Enhui Wu,Xiaoshan Feng,Yingbin Zheng,Daifeng Lin,Yongjin Luo,Yufeng You,Baoquan Huang,Qingrong Qian,Qinghua Chen

Mn–Co–O catalysts with different Mn/Co molar ratios were synthesized by means of a facile inverse coprecipitation strategy and applied for the oxidation of propane (C3H8). The XRD pattern of Co2Mn1Oδ (molar ratio of Mn:Co = 1:2) indicates a Co3O4 phase, and most Mn incorporates into Co3O4 lattice to form a solid solution. Minor distributed Mn species occur structure reforming, totally converting to a stable Co–Mn solid solution during oxidation process. Meanwhile, Co2Mn1Oδ features a porous core–shell morphology, the core and shell of which are made up of Co–Mn solid solution, giving rise to a high surface area. The optimized synergistic effect of manganese and cobalt improves low temperature reducibility and produces rich surface active Co3+ species and surface-absorbed oxygen over Co2Mn1Oδ. As a result, it exhibits a prominent excellent catalytic activity, and delivers good thermal stability in the presence of 5 vol % H2O and 5 vol % CO2. In situ DRIFTs analysis displays the reaction path of C3H8 over Co2Mn1Oδ, where dominate intermediate species formate are easily decomposed into CO2. The synthesized porous core–shell Mn–Co–O can be a promising candidate replacing non-noble catalysts toward C3H8 oxidation at low temperature.

Mesoporous polyvalent Ni–Mn–Co–O composite nanowire arrays towards integrated anodes boosting high-properties lithium storage

Junxiang Zhou,Yudeng Wang,Bo Feng,Yong Sun,Jiafu Wang

Ternary transition metal oxides (TMOs) are potentially promising anode materials for lithium storage with high power and energy density. Designing appropriate electrode structures is an effective strategy to sufficiently exhibit the advantages of TMOs for lithium storage. Here, we present the synthetic process and electrochemical properties of carbon-coated mesoporous Ni–Mn–Co–O (NMCO) nanowire arrays (NWAs) grown on Ni foam as an integrated electrode for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The electrochemical measurements show that the carbon-coated NMCO integrated electrode exhibits high capacity and cycling properties. In addition, we have also developed an all one-dimensional (1D) structural full cell using an LiMn2O4 nanorod cathode and an NMCO/Ni NWAs@C-550 anode, which exhibits relatively outstanding cycling properties.

A novel voltammetric sensor for ascorbic acid based on molecularly imprinted poly(o-phenylenediamine-co-o-aminophenol)

Yong Kong,Xueling Shan,Jianfeng Ma,Meilan Chen,Zhidong Chen

A molecularly imprinted copolymer, poly( o -phenylenediamine- co - o -aminophenol) (PoPDoAP), was prepared as a new ascorbic acid (AA) sensor. The copolymer was synthesized by incorporation of AA as template molecules during the electrochemical copolymerization of o -phenylenediamine and o -aminophenol, and complementary sites were formed after the copolymer was electrochemically reduced in ammonium aqueous solution. The molecularly imprinted copolymer sensor exhibited a high sensitivity and selectivity toward AA. Differential pulse voltammograms (DPVs) showed a linear concentration range of AA from 0.1 to 10   mM, and the detection limit was calculated to be 36.4   μM. Compared to conventional polyaniline-based AA sensors, the analytical performance of the imprinted copolymer sensor was improved due to the broadened usable pH range of P o PD o AP (from pH 1.0 to pH 8.0). The sensor also exhibited a good reproducibility and stability. And it has been successfully applied in the determination of AA in real samples, including vitamin C tablet and orange juices, with satisfactory results.
