Preparation of 2D/2D CoAl-LDH/BiO(OH)XI1−X Heterojunction Catalyst with Enhanced Visible–Light Photocatalytic Activity for Organic Pollutants Degradation in Water

Liying Che,Huanhuan Ji

Hydrotalcite/bismuth solid solution (2D/2D CoAl-LDH/BiO(OH)XI1−X) heterojunction photocatalysts were fabricated through a hydrothermal route. Because of their identical layered structure and interlayer hydroxides, CoAl-LDH(2D) and BiO(OH)XI1−X(2D) form a tightly bonded heterojunction, resulting in efficient light absorption, excitation, and carrier migration conversion. At the same time, the large specific surface area and abundant hydroxyl groups of the layered structure make the heterojunction catalyst exhibit excellent performance in the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants. Under visible light irradiation and in the presence of 1 g/L of the catalyst, 10 mg/L of methyl orange (MO) in water could be completely degraded within 20 min, and the degradation rate of tetracycline (TC) reached 99.23% within 5 min. CoAl-LDH/BiO(OH)XI1−Xstill maintained good photocatalytic degradation activity of tetracycline after five cycles, and the structure of the catalyst did not change. The reaction mechanism related to the degradation of TC by photocatalytic reactions was explored in detail, and the photoexcitation of the semiconductor heterojunction, as well as the subsequent free radical reaction process and the degradation pathway of TC were clarified. This work provides a promising strategy for the preparation of efficient photocatalytic materials and the development of water purification technology.

In-situ construction of 3D marigold-like CoAl-LDH/Ti3C2 heterosystem collaborating with 2D/2D interface for efficient photodegradation of multiple antibiotics

Tianyu Wang,Yong Yang,Qinghua Deng,Xiaoyue Zhang,Lijun Xiong,Zheng Tang,Panjie Li,Nan Yin,Aiwu Sun,Dan Chen,Jinyou Shen

Developing of a photocatalyst for multiple antibiotics degradation and revealing their different mechanism are of great importance for wastewater remediation. Herein, a 3D marigold-like CoAl-LDH/Ti 3 C 2 hybrid is developed via in situ growth of CoAl-LDH on Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets and on-spot self-assembly during the hydrothermal process. The existence of optimized Ti 3 C 2 steers the morphology evolution from 2D lotus leaf-like nanoplate to 3D marigold-like hierarchical architecture, which greatly boosts the adsorption capacity and photon capture of the catalyst by the increased specific surface area and the scattering cross section. Meanwhile, the well-defined 2D/2D interface between the components effectively promotes the electron transfer from CoAl-LDH to Ti 3 C 2 , and the photoinduced electron-hole pairs on CoAl-LDH can be greatly separated. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations further demonstrate the change of electronic structure for the composite photocatalyst. As a result, CoAl-LDH/Ti 3 C 2 hybrid presents 85%, 56% and 70% degradation efficiency towards tetracycline hydrochloride, chloramphenicol and terramycin, which are 3.1, 3 and 2.1 times of the pristine CoAl-LDH. Furthermore, the degradation path for chloramphenicol is explored and the reason for its different degradation efficiency is revealed. The design of 3D hierarchical scaffold cooperating with 2D/2D heterogeneous interface provides a new avenue to develop ideal catalysts for wastewater remediation.

Construction of sandwich-structured CoAl-layered double hydroxide@zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (CoAl-LDH@ZIF-67) hybrids: towards enhancing the fire safety of epoxy resins

Hailin Guo,Yifan Wang,Chaofeng Li,Keqing Zhou

In this work, sandwich-like structured CoAl-LDH@ZIF-67 hybrids were constructed by in situ growth of nanosized ZIF-67 crystallites on CoAl-LDH nanoplates. The structure and morphology of CoAl-LDH@ZIF-67 hybrids were represented by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Accordingly, the hybrids were introduced into epoxy resins to explore their effect on the thermal and fire safety properties of epoxy composites. With the introduction of 2% CoAl-LDH@ZIF-67 hybrids, the T10%, T50% and Tmax values were decreased to some extent and the char residue yield was higher than that of pristine epoxy. The peak heat release rate (PHRR) of epoxy composites declined by 26.4%, in comparison with those of pure epoxy. Moreover, the quantity of smoke produced, toxic CO released and CO2 produced were suppressed markedly and decreased by 16.7%, 59.8% and 32.2%, respectively. A possible mechanism for improving fire safety was put forward based on the analysis of the carbon residues.

Stepwise Construction of MoS2@CoAl-LDH/NF 3D Core–Shell Nanoarrays with High Hole Mobility for High-Performance Asymmetric Supercapacitors

Yue Yan,Wenrui Wu,Yang Yang,Tao Xu,Xianfu Li

Supercapacitors (SCs) have received widespread attention as excellent energy storage devices, and the design of multicomponent electrode materials and the construction of ingenious structures are the keys to enhancing the performance of SCs. In this paper, MoS2 nanorods were used as the carrier structure to induce the anchoring of CoAl-LDH nanosheets and grow on the surface of nickel foam (NF) in situ, thus obtaining a uniformly distributed MoS2 nanorod@CoAl-LDH nanosheet core–shell nanoarray material (MoS2@CoAl-LDH/NF). On the one hand, the nanorod-structured MoS2 as the core provides high conductivity and support, accelerates electron transfer, and avoids agglomeration of CoAl-LDH nanosheets. On the other hand, CoAl-LDH nanosheet arrays have abundant interfacially active sites, which accelerate the electrolyte penetration and enhance the electrochemical activity. The synergistic effect of the two components and the unique core–shell nanostructure give MoS2@CoAl-LDH/NF a high capacity (14,888.8 mF cm–2 at 2 mA cm–2) and long-term cycling performance (104.4% retention after 5000 charge/discharge cycles). The integrated MoS2@CoAl-LDH/NF//AC device boasts a voltage range spanning from 0 to 1.5 V, achieving a peak energy density of 0.19 mW h cm–2 at 1.5 mW cm–2. Impressively, it maintains a capacitance retention rate of 84.6% after enduring 10,000 cycles, demonstrating exceptional durability and stability.

Bioinspired hierarchical CoAl-LDH/MFe2O4(Ni, Zn, Co) as peroxidase mimics for colorimetric detection of glucose

Wenning Yang,Jia Li,Min Liu,Dickon H.L. Ng,Yong Liu,Xiaofan Sun,Jie Yang

Novel hierarchically porous CoAl-LDH (layered double hydroxides)/MFe 2 O 4 (Ni, Zn, Co) hybrids with excellent peroxidase-like catalytic activity , high selectivity and reusability were first fabricated by using natural cotton as a bio-template. Among them, CoAl-LDH/NiFe 2 O 4 exhibited the best intrinsic peroxidase-like property due to its 3D hierarchically porous structure with more exposed active sites, which could effectively catalyze peroxidase substrate 3,3′,5,5′- tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) in the presence of H 2 O 2 to produce typical blue color reaction. A facile and visual system for glucose detection using glucose oxidase was successfully established, which exhibited a sensitive response to glucose in the range of 25–400 μM with detection limit of 13 μM based on the hydroxyl radical originated from the decomposition of H 2 O 2 by the catalysis of CoAl-LDH/MFe 2 O 4 (Ni, Co, Zn) hybrids. This work offered an effective strategy to achieve morphology-controllable hierarchically porous materials and provided a new insight into seeking novel enzyme mimetics with enhanced catalytic activities.

Facile synthesis of carbon doped CoAl-LDH for peroxymonosulfate activation and antibiotic degradation: Pilot scale and hospital wastewater application

Tao Li,Jiahui Zou,Lingyuan Hong,Jian Zhang,Weikun Sun,Zumin Qiu,Mohammad Younas

Levofloxacin (LFX), a widely used antibiotic, exhibits high chemical stability and resistance to conventional wastewater treatment methods, posing serious environmental and health concerns. In this study, a super-capacitor activated carbon (SAC) doped with flower-like CoAl-layered double hydroxide (LDH) was synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method through a doping strategy. The SAC-LDH composite demonstrated superior performance in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS, 0.12 mM) achieving 95 % degradation efficiency of LFX (10 mg/L) within 5 min. The high specific surface area and excellent adsorption capacity of SAC facilitated effective accumulation of LFX on the catalyst surface, enhancing reaction kinetics. The rapid conversion of Co 2 + and Co 3+ in the catalyst was suggested to generate highly reactive oxygen species, including SO 4 •- , •OH, O 2 •- , and 1 O 2 . This process was further demonstrated by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), in-situ Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy (XPS). Pilot-scale fixed-bed reactor testing of SAC-LDH for pre-treated hospital wastewater treatment (soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) > 140 mg/L) was conducted. The system exhibited long-term stability, anti-interference ability, and high catalytic efficiency under continuous flow condition (1.0 L/h, 7 days). These findings highlight the developed composite SAC-LDH + PMS system as a highly efficient, stable, and scalable solution for treating antibiotic-contaminated wastewater treatment, offering strong potential for real-world environmental remediation application.

Heterostructure of ultrafine FeOOH nanodots supported on CoAl-layered double hydroxide nanosheets as highly efficient electrocatalyst for water oxidation

Chuan Gang,Jiayi Chen,Qihao Chen,Yantao Chen

The supported and dispersed ultrafine active species for electrocatalytic water oxidation are quite promising for the high intrinsic activity. A novel heterostructure of ultrafine FeOOH nanodots with an average size of 2.3 nm supported on CoAl-LDH nanosheets , is constructed by a facile method under ambient conditions. The as-prepared FeOOH@CoAl-LDH shows a strong interfacial interaction upon the formation of heterostructure, and is demonstrated as a highly efficient and stable electrocatalyst that demands 272 mV to attain 50 mA cm −2 and exhibits a Tafel slope of 40 mV dec −1 . Moreover, density functional theory calculations manifest the coupling of FeOOH with CoAl-LDH can effectively decrease the energy barrier during the water oxidation process by optimizing the adsorption free energy of intermediates in the reaction pathway. The successful development of FeOOH@CoAl-LDH can shed light on the design of novel electrocatalysts that can fully take advantages of small size, heterostructure and synergistic effect.

Switchable superlyophobic CoAl-layered double hydroxide (LDH)-based mesh membranes for separation of various oil/water systems and removal of soluble organic pollutants

Pei Nian,Xiaojuan Wang,Xiaoling Zuo,Shuming Li,Siyuan Qiao,Yibin Wei

Switchable surface wettability has attracted tremendous attention owing to its potential applications, but it is still thorny to construct under-liquid dual superlyophobic surfaces for reversible separation of emulsified oil/water mixtures and treatment of complex oily wastewater. In this work, a CoAl-LDH-based mesh membrane was prepared for switchable separation of emulsified oily wastewater. The interpenetrating CoAl-LDH nanosheets were grown on the stainless steel mesh (SSM) forming a micro-/nano hierarchical structure via a hydrothermal method, which endows the membrane with under-liquid dual superlyophobicity. The obtained CoAl-LDH membrane exhibited switchable separation capability for both oil/water mixtures and oil/water emulsions with high fluxes and efficiencies (99.7%). In addition, the CoAl-LDH membrane could not only separate but also photodegrade the oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions containing soluble organic pollutants. Interestingly, after introducing a ZnO nanorod layer, the LDH/ZnO membrane exhibited progressive removal efficiency (99%) and photodegradation efficiency (>99%) for methylene blue (MB). The cycled and harsh condition tests also confirmed the stability and robustness of the prepared membranes. The excellent separation performance and photocatalytic property endow the membranes appealing to practical oil/water separation and oily wastewater treatment.

Synthesis and Tribological Properties of MXene/CoAl-LDH Heterostructure Nano-additives

Li Ting,Kong Yangjie,Zhang Chengjin,Jing Fuhua,Yin Zhenyu,Zhang Lixiu,Li Xinran

Two-dimensional MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) demonstrates significant potential for applications in tribology due to its exceptional interlayer shear behavior and high load-bearing capacity. However, its practical use is considerably limited by issues such as poor dispersibility, susceptibility to agglomeration in non-polar lubricating oils, and inadequate high-temperature oxidation resistance. To overcome these challenges, this study utilized a hydrothermal method to in-situ grow CoAl-LDH on the surface of Ti 3 C 2 T x , successfully creating a Ti 3 C 2 T x /CoAl-LDH composite. The steric hindrance effect of the heterostructure effectively addressed the dispersion stability problem of the additive in PAO6 base oil, while simultaneously enhancing the material’s oxidation resistance. Tribological tests indicate that, under conditions of 25 °C and 40 N, the incorporation of 0.2 wt% of this composite results in significant reductions in the average friction coefficient and wear volume of PAO6 base oil by 52.9 and 51.3%, respectively. At 200 °C and 40 N, the corresponding reductions are 39.1 and 39.4%. The remarkable friction-reducing and anti-wear performance can be attributed to the in-situ formation of a dense composite tribo-chemical film at the sliding interface during friction. This protective film, composed of Ti 3 C 2 T x , CoAl-LDH, metal oxides, and complex carbides, substantially enhances the load-bearing and lubricating properties of the contact interface.

Facile fabrication of CoAl-LDH nanosheets for efficient rhodamine B degradation via peroxymonosulfate activation

Hui Fui,Shumin Gao,Xinran Ma,Yiping Huang

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have been extensively investigated as promising peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activators for the degradation of organic pollutants. However, bulk LDHs synthesized using conventional methods possess a closely stacked layered structure, which seriously blocks active sites and yields low intrinsic activity. In this study, we exfoliated bulk CoAl-LDHs to fabricate CoAl-LDH nanosheets by alkali-etching and Ostwald ripening via a simple hydrothermal process in a KOH solution. The exfoliated LDHs possessed the typical nanosheet structure with more exposed active sites for PMS activation, and hence, boosted the degradation of the pollutants. CoAl-1 exhibited an outstanding catalytic performance as the PMS activator for rhodamine B (RhB) degradation with the apparent rate constant of 0.1687 min−1, which was about 3.63 and 5.02 times higher than that of commercial nano-Co3O4 and bulk CoAl-LDH, respectively. The maximum RhB degradation of 93.1% was achieved at the optimal reaction conditions: catalyst dose 0.1 g L−1, PMS concentration 0.3 mM, pH 7, and temperature 298 K. Further analysis of RhB degradation mechanism illustrated that singlet oxygen (1O2) dominated RhB degradation in the CoAl-1/PMS system, while ˙OH, ˙O2−, and ˙SO4− may mainly serve as the intermediates for the generation of 1O2 and were indirectly involved in the degradation. This study provides a promising strategy for developing two-dimensional LDH nanosheets for wastewater remediation.

Dynamic Morphological Evolution of Co-Based Layered Double Hydroxide Nanosheets Investigated by In Situ Electrochemical-Atomic Force Microscopy

Haoran Guo,Yanxue Guan,Miaomiao Zhang,Juan Qin,Xinyue Guo,Zongjia Li,Bailin Zhang,Jilin Tang

With excellent electrochemical activity, low consumption, and easy synthesis, Co-based layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have been applied to electrochemical energy conversion and storage devices. Understanding the mechanisms of morphological evolution and capacity changes under potential cycles is critical for the design of high-performance materials of Co-based LDHs. Here, we monitored the morphological evolution of two kinds of CoFe-LDH nanosheets and four kinds of CoAl-LDH nanosheets using in situ electrochemical-atomic force microscopy. The CoFe-LDH nanosheets present the growth of granular particles and the deterioration of capacity performances, which might be due to the irreversible conversion of hydroxide into oxyhydroxide under potential cycles. The CoAl-LDH nanosheets maintain more capacity and do not form granular particles under potential cycles, resulting from the electrochemical reaction reversibility of Co2+ and the stability of the host hydroxide layer enhanced by Al3+. The introduction of Al3+ into the Co-based LDH structure is conducive to cyclic stability of capacity compared to that of Fe3+. Additionally, the CoAl-LDH nanosheets with different Co/Al molar ratios present varying degrees of dissolution and variations of capacity under potential cycles. A moderate Co/Al molar ratio of CoAl-LDH nanosheets is beneficial to cyclic stability. These findings would provide a deep insight into the mechanisms of capacity changes based on in situ morphological evolution and support for the optimization of such material performance.

Catalytic Ozone Degradation of Dye Wastewater by CoAl-LDH@K-NSBC Modified with Magnetic CuFe2O4

Danli Tang,Dengjie Zhong,Yongxian Zhou,Yunlan Xu,Tanxia Xiang,Wantao Li,Yuanfang Yang,Chunmiao Fan,Jisai Chen

In this study, the magnetic composite catalyst, CuFe2O4 modified Co-Al layered double hydroxide supported by alkali-activated N,S-codoped biochar (CFO/CoAl-LDH@K-NSBC) was developed to activate ozone to degrade methylene blue (MB). The MB degradation efficiency of the CFO/CoAl-LDH@K-NSBC/O3 system was 96.30% in 7 min, and it still remained at 92.85% after 5 cycles. Notably, in the pond water matrix, the degradation efficiency only decreased by 6.44% after five cycles, which confirmed its remarkable stability and application prospects. Electrochemical analysis revealed that the comodification of CFO and CoAl-LDH significantly enhanced the charge transfer and catalytic activity of K-NSBC. The results of material characterization and quenching experiments showed that highly exposed active sites, including oxygen vacancies (Ov), Co3+/Co2+, Fe3+/Fe2+, Cu2+/Cu+, pyridinic N, graphitic N and thiophenic S, synergistically drove O3 activation to generate 1O2, ·OH, and ·O2– to participate in MB degradation, among which 1O2 was the main reactive oxygen species. This study provides a novel approach for the preparation of environmentally friendly biochar-based multimetal oxides with high catalytic activity.
