Hierarchical Co(OH)F/CoFe-LDH heterojunction enabling high-performance overall water-splitting

Mingliang Qin,Yamei Wang,Huaming Zhang,Muhammad Humayun,Xuefei Xu,Yanjun Fu,Marsil K. Kadirov,Chundong Wang

Due to the serious energy and environmental issues, hydrogen generation via water splitting has been regarded as a green and promising alternative strategy to the use of fossil fuels. Developing highly efficient and non-noble metal based dual-functional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting to generate hydrogen and oxygen has become more critical. In order to fulfill the requirements of efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), herein, we report novel hierarchical Co(OH)F@CoFe-LDH heterostructured nanorod arrays fabricated via a facile two-step approach. The resultant Co(OH)F@CoFe-LDH displays exceptional electrocatalytic OER and HER activity with a small overpotential of 240 mV and 130 mV at 10 mA cm−2, respectively. Further, the electrocatalyst revealed excellent long-term stability during a recyclability test for 37 h. The superior performance of Co(OH)F@CoFe-LDH can be attributed to the synergistic effect at the interface of the Co(OH)F nanorods and the covered CoFe-LDH nanosheets. Meanwhile, Co(OH)F@CoFe-LDH as a water electrolyzer to produce a current density of 10 mA cm−2 requires a small voltage of 1.58 V. This work paves the way for the design and construction of low cost and highly efficient 3D hierarchical electrodes for practical applications in electrocatalysis.

NiMoO4@CoFe-LDH Anode Design to Improve Oxygen Bubble Transport in Dynamic Water Electrolysis

Yan Yin,Sipu Wang,Bin Chen,Anqi Zhang,Lianqin Wang,Fuqiang Bai,Tianyou Wang,Junfeng Zhang,Zhizhao Che

Direct water electrolysis using renewable energy offers a promising approach to green hydrogen production. Fluctuations in power supply cause gas bubbles to accumulate on the electrode surface, leading to segmented plug flow that hampers electrode activity and durability. To tackle the ongoing challenges of gas bubble accumulation in electrocatalytic systems, this study presents a NiMoO 4 @CoFe-LDH composite electrode with a 3D layered hierarchical structure designed to establish an effective gas-liquid-solid triple-phase interface. This distinct heterogeneous structure features a superhydrophilic surface, which enhances the active surface area and bubble generation sites, promoting oxygen bubble release and improving charge transfer. This bubble behavior synergistically enhances the high efficiency, dynamic response, and low load adaptability of the electrolyzer by avoiding high-current mass-transfer clogging and enhancing the adaptability to dynamic operating conditions. In 1 m KOH, the catalyst achieves a 202 mV (η@10 mA cm −2 ) overpotential, with high stability of over 1000 h. The Pt/C||NiMoO 4 @CoFe-LDH anion-exchange membrane electrolyzer operates efficiently and stably under fluctuating operating conditions (1.70 V@1.0 A cm −2 , 30,000 cycles), providing a new paradigm for green hydrogen anode design in scenarios of fluctuating supply of renewable energy.

3D nanostructured Ce-doped CoFe-LDH/NF self-supported catalyst for high-performance OER

Lu Wang,Yi Liu,Xiaoheng Liu,Wei Chen

Powder electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reactions usually need adhesives for electrocatalytic performance tests, leading to the increase of resistance, reduction of catalyst loading, and easy stripping of the catalyst under long-time or high current operation. In this study, Ce-doped CoFe layered double hydroxides were uniformly grown on nickel foam by a one-step hydrothermal route. A nanostructured self-supported electrode Ce-CoFe-LDH/NF without adhesive was obtained directly, which has a regular nanoneedle morphology with a length of ∼1.2 μm and tip width of ∼20 nm. Adopting Ce3+ ions with a large radius to partially displace Fe3+ ions with a small radius produced lattice distortion and more defects in the host layer of CoFe-LDH, whereby possessing the great potential to enhance catalytic behaviors. Once used as an electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction, Ce-CoFe-LDH/NF shows an outstanding electrocatalytic performance, including an optimized overpotential of 225 mV at 10 mA cm−2, a decreased Tafel slope of 34.34 mV dec−1, and a low charge transfer impedance of 2.4 Ω in 1 M KOH electrolyte. Moreover, the overpotential of the working electrode increased by only 0.04 V after 24 hours and was maintained at a current density of 50 mA cm−2. These results demonstrate a low-cost strategy compared to using noble metal OER electrocatalysts. Thus, this study highlights a ready universal approach to fabricate high-performance supported catalysts for energy-related applications.

Hollow layered double hydroxide nanoreactor activated peroxymonosulfate to efficiently degrade dye wastewater

Ziwei Wang,Liansong Gao,Xiaofei Chen,Haibo Jin,Huangzhao Wei,Lei Ma,Qingyang Gu,Xiaowei Liu

The conventional preparation of layered double hydroxide (LDH) often limits its catalytic effectiveness in advanced oxidation processes due to agglomeration and inadequate exposure of active sites. In this work, we present a simplified synthesis approach that utilizes zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF)-67 (Co) as a sacrificial template to in situ fabricate hollow polyhedral CoFe-LDH (HP-LDH), aimed at enhancing the degradation of dye contaminants in aqueous systems. The unique porous and polyhedral structure of HP-LDH, derived from the template, facilitates contact efficiency between the substrate and active metal sites, acting as an effective nanoreactor. The comparative degradation experiments of Acid Red 27 (AR27) in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) revealed that the degradation efficiency of HP-LDH was nearly twice that of conventional flake LDH (F-LDH). Under optimal conditions, the HP-LDH/PMS system attained a removal rate of 95% in just 15 min. The degradation of the dye relies on the action of both radical and non-radical species, particularly 1 O 2 . Furthermore, the robust adaptability and versatility of HP-LDH/PMS to real water bodies, with a wide range of pH levels and coexisting inorganic anions, demonstrates its potential as a superior catalyst in wastewater treatment, offering a novel pathway for structural innovation of LDH materials in environmental applications.

Ru induced oxygen vacancies activate lattice oxygen mechanism in CoFe-LDH for overall water splitting

Liping Wang,Mengqiu Xu,Zhaohang Sun,Xiaolian Liu,Zhe Jia,Sateesh Bandaru,Yixing Li,Yufei Ma,Xuefeng Zhang,Wenli Pei

Developing bifunctional electrocatalysts with high activity and long term durability remains challenging for overall water splitting, mainly due to sluggish reaction kinetics and structural instability under high current densities. Herein, an oxygen vacancy rich RuCoFe-LDH electrocatalyst with low Ru content was successfully fabricated on nickel foam through a one step hydrothermal method. TMAOH inhibition, pH dependent analyses, and isotope labeling DEMS measurements collectively reveal that the synergistic coupling between Ru doping and oxygen vacancies promotes lattice oxygen participation and activates the LOM pathway during OER. Benefiting from the optimized electronic structure, RuCoFe-LDH/NF requires overpotentials of only 212 and 131 mV to reach 10 mA cm −2 for OER and HER, respectively, with corresponding Tafel slopes of 30.7 and 61.7 mV dec −1 . Moreover, the RuCoFe-LDH based electrolyzer achieves 100 mA cm −2 at a cell voltage of only 1.75 V and maintains stable operation for 1000 h during both OER and HER, and the corresponding full electrolyzer also operates stably for 1000 h at 100 mA cm −2 . This work provides an effective strategy for designing high performance LDH based bifunctional electrocatalysts through low content Ru incorporation and oxygen vacancy engineering.

Xinquan Zhao,Shisheng Li,Xinshu Zhang,Zhi Gao,Yi Du,Wanying Lei

Exploring efficient, stable, and earth-abundant electrocatalysts toward the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a central theme for realizing industrial application of water splitting. In this study, a 1D@2D heterostructure of Co 9 S 8 -Ni 3 S 2 @CoFe LDH/NF is constructed via hydrothermal and electrodeposition approaches, where ultrathin CoFe LDH nanosheets are interconnected and deposited onto Co 9 S 8 -Ni 3 S 2 nanorod arrays. This 1D@2D microstructure benefits from the exposure of a large number of accessible reactive sites. The strong interaction between the sulfide hybrid and LDH material could modulate the electronic structure of Co 9 S 8 -Ni 3 S 2 @CoFe LDH and generate a high concentration of high-valence metal sites. As a result, the optimal catalyst exhibits superior OER performance with a low overpotential of 189 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , a small Tafel slope of 30.22 mV dec −1 , and good stability in alkaline solution. This work opens up a possibility for obtaining efficient and cost-effective electrocatalysts for clean energy production through water splitting. Self-supported CoFe LDH/Co0.85Se nanosheet arrays as efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction

Weiyang Jin,Fang Liu,Xiaoliang Guo,Jun Zhang,Lekai Zheng,Yongchuan Hu,Jing Mao,Hui Liu,Yanming Xue,Chengchun Tang

The exploration of high-performance, cost-effective, and stable electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial for future energy storage and conversion technologies. Cobalt-based hydroxides and oxides have been considered as ideal OER electrocatalysts and have been intensively studied; however, their catalytic activity is still unsatisfactory. It is known that the interfacial electron and structure engineering of composite electrocatalysts often results in synergistically enhanced catalytic performance. Herein, a self-supported binary heterogeneous catalyst composed of CoFe LDH/Co0.85Se nanosheet arrays vertically grown on carbon cloth has been reported. The heterostructure electrocatalyst exhibits excellent activity for the OER in alkaline electrolyte, requiring an overpotential of only 241 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 with a small Tafel slope of 48 mV dec−1. These performances are significantly better than those of the bare CoFe LDH and Co0.85Se catalysts. Moreover, the composite electrodes exhibit outstanding durability within 40 h of testing. Our further electrochemical results show that the excellent activities of the heterostructure electrodes should be ascribed to the interfacial coupling effect, increased number of activity sites, accelerated electron transfer, and strong structural stability. This work paves an interesting route for boosting the OER performance of oxide-based electrocatalysts by the regulation of electronic structure through introducing non oxide electrocatalysts for various applications.

Construction of Cu2O@CoFe LDH Heterojunctions as Bifunctional Photoelectrodes for Light-Enhanced Electrochemical Water Splitting

Ting Zhu,Bo Wu,Jing Xie,Hongran Yang,Weibin Zhang,Yanyan Sun

Hierarchical structured p–n heterojunctions comprising cuprous oxide nanowire cores (Cu2O NW) and CoFe-layered double hydroxide (CoFe LDH) nanosheet shells on copper foam (CF) substrates were constructed by in situ wet–chemical reactions with subsequent electrodeposition. The synergistic effect of the superior light-harvesting ability of Cu2O and the built-in electric field generated by the Cu2O/CoFe LDH p–n heterojunction is verified to facilitate the efficient separation of photogenerated electrons and holes by promoting the rapid transfer of photogenerated charge carriers. Benefiting from the advantages above, the optimal CF@Cu2O NW/LDH-3 exhibits light-enhanced catalysis toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (maximum enhancement of 14.4%) and oxygen evolution reaction (maximum enhancement of 7.4%) for water splitting. Moreover, the alkaline electrolytic cell based on the optimal CF@Cu2O NW/LDH-3 requires an operating potential of only 1.62 V to drive a high current density of 100 mA cm–2 under illumination. Meanwhile, a current density retention of up to 91.62% can be reserved after a stability test for 24 h. This work provides ideas for the design of transition metal-based catalytic materials for photodriven electrochemical water splitting.

Interface Engineering of CoFe-LDH Modified Ti: α-Fe2O3 Photoanode for Enhanced Photoelectrochemical Water Oxidation

Yue Chang,Minmin Han,Yehui Ding,Huiyun Wei,Dawei Zhang,Hong Luo,Xiaogang Li,Xiongbo Yan

Effectively regulating and promoting the charge separation and transfer of photoanodes is a key and challenging aspect of photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation. Herein, a Ti-doped hematite photoanode with a CoFe-LDH cocatalyst loaded on the surface was prepared through a series of processes, including hydrothermal treatment, annealing and electrodeposition. The prepared CoFe-LDH/Ti:α-Fe2O3photoanode exhibited an outstanding photocurrent density of 3.06 mA/cm2at 1.23 VRHE, which is five times higher than that of α-Fe2O3alone. CoFe-LDH modification and Ti doping on hematite can boost the surface charge transfer efficiency, which is mainly attributed to the interface interaction between CoFe-LDH and Ti:α-Fe2O3. Furthermore, we investigated the role of Ti doping in enhancing the PEC performance of CoFe-LDH/Ti:α-Fe2O3. A series of characterizations and theoretical calculations revealed that, in addition to improving the electronic conductivity of the bulk material, Ti doping also further enhances the interface coupling of CoFe-LDH/α-Fe2O3and finely regulates the interfacial electronic structure. These changes promote the rapid extraction of holes from hematite and facilitate charge separation and transfer. The informative findings presented in this work provide valuable insights for the design and construction of hematite photoanodes, offering guidance for achieving excellent performance in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation.

Mxene quantum dot insertion-induced electron transfer in CoFe LDH for high-performance zinc-air batteries

Qing Sun,Kailin Li,Tie Shu,Ziyang Guo,Yongfei Li,Yuxin Zhang,Liang Li,Jiaoyi Ning,Peng Zhao,Ke Xin Yao

Cobalt-iron layered double hydroxide (CoFe LDH), a promising air cathode material for rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs), faces significant challenges in practical applications due to its low oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalytic activity and the ambiguity in identifying its active sites. To address these issues, this study introduces MXene quantum dots (MQDs) into CoFe LDH, fabricating a CoFe LDH/MQD/Co@NF composite with enhanced interfacial electronic coupling. This integration induces electron transfer from CoFe LDH to MQDs, leading to the pre-oxidation of Co ions into higher-valence Co 3+ states, as confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and optimizing OER intermediate adsorption kinetics. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal cobalt as the primary active site, highlighting its critical role in boosting catalytic activity. The composite exhibits a low OER overpotential of 192 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , a Tafel slope of 36.3 mV dec -2 , a maximum power density of 136.5 mW cm −2 , and a high specific energy of 626 mA h g −1 in ZABs, with exceptional durability over an 85-hour cyclic test. These results demonstrate that MQD incorporation significantly improves OER catalytic activity and enhances ZAB performance, offering a promising strategy for designing high-performance, long-lasting electrocatalysts and advancing electrochemical energy storage technologies.

Efficient degradation of N-nitrosopyrrolidine using CoFe-LDH/AC particle electrode via heterogeneous Fenton-like reaction

Zhuwu Jiang,Yuchang Wang,Hai Yu,Ning Yao,Jyunhong Shen,Yan Li,HongYu Zhang,Xue Bai

With the rapid development of drinking water disinfection technology , extensive attentions are paid to the nitrogenous disinfection by-products (N-DBPs) that has strong carcinogenicity , thus their degradation becomes important for the health of human beings. In this work, for the first time, CoFe-LDH material used as particle electrode is proposed to treat trace N-nitrosopyrrolidine (NPYR) in a three-dimensional aeration electrocatalysis reactor (3DAER). The factors on the degradation efficiency and energy consumption of NPYR are systematically investigated, and the results of radical quenching experiments show that the degradation of NPYR is completed by combining with ·OH, ·O 2 and direct oxidation together. CoFe-LDH particle electrode plays a vital role in generating ·OH via heterogeneous ‾Fenton-like reaction. Moreover, the adsorbed saturated CoFe-LDH particle electrode can be regenerated by electrochemical action to induce further recycle adsorption and form in-situ electrocatalysis. This work pave a way for the removal of NPYR with high efficiency, low energy conservation and environmental protection.

Ni0.85Se@CoFe LDH heterostructure nanosheet arrays on Ni foam as efficient electrocatalysts for enhanced oxygen evolution

Shixiang Xue,Tong Zhou,Pan Wu,Liang Zhao,Yanli Nan,Mingtao Qiao,Wanying Lei

Exploring high-efficient, earth-abundant and stable electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of vital importance for large-scale implementation of energy converting and storing. Thus, we fabricated a free-standing hierarchical heterostructure electrode of Ni 0.85 Se@CoFe LDH/NF via a rational combination of hydrothermal, selenization and electrodeposition process, among which the ultrathin CoFe LDH nanosheets intimately assembled onto the vertical aligned Ni 0.85 Se nanosheets supported on Ni foam. The constructed core-shell nanosheet arrays hold the plentiful hetero-interfaces and intimate interactions through metal-oxygen bonds between two individuals, which guarantee the fast OER kinetic processes. Additionally, CoFe LDH with crystalline/amorphous hybrid structure favors providing more reaction sites. Remarkably, the optimal Ni 0.85 Se@CoFe LDH/NF binary composites possess outstanding OER activity with a low overpotential of ∼223 and 280 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and 100 mA cm −2 in alkaline solution as well as good durability. This research offers an alternative approach for improving electrocatalytic water splitting through constructing 3D hierarchical heterostructures.
