CoMn2O4 Catalyst Prepared Using the Sol-Gel Method for the Activation of Peroxymonosulfate and Degradation of UV Filter 2-Phenylbenzimidazole-5-sulfonic Acid (PBSA)

Chihao Lin,Dejian Shi,Zhentao Wu,Lingfeng Zhang,Zhicai Zhai,Yingsen Fang,Ping Sun,Ruirui Han,Jiaqiang Wu,Hui Liu

In this study, a bimetallic oxide catalyst of cobalt-manganese (CoMn2O4) was synthesized using the sol-gel method, and it was then characterized using a variety of techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherms. The obtained novel catalyst, i.e., CoMn2O4, was then used as an activator of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the catalytic degradation of a commonly-used UV filter, 2-phenylbenzimidazole-5-sulfonic acid (PBSA) in water. The effects of various factors (e.g., catalyst dosage, PMS concentration, reaction temperature, and pH) in the process were also evaluated. Chemical scavengers and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) tests showed that the•OH and SO4•−were the main reactive oxygen species. Furthermore, this study showed that CoMn2O4is a promising catalyst for activating PMS to degrade the UV filters.Keywords:CoMn2O4;catalytic degradation;peroxymonosulfate;UV filters;2-phenylbenzimidazole-5-sulfonic acid (PBSA)

Hierarchical structured Ti-doped CeO2 stabilized CoMn2O4 for enhancing the low-temperature NH3-SCR performance within highly H2O and SO2 resistance

Ning Luo,Fengyu Gao,Hengheng Liu,Tingkai Xiong,Jiajun Wen,Erhong Duan,Chengzhi Wang,Shunzheng Zhao,Honghong Yi,Xiaolong Tang

Developing effective and stable catalysts for low-temperature selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO x remains challenging. Herein, we constructed a hierarchical structure by loading CoMn 2 O 4 onto Ti-doped CeO 2 , that CoMn 2 O 4 /CeTiO x catalyst has shown superior deNO x activity (>95% at 100–225 °C), prominent reaction activation energy (28.8 ± 0.9 kJ mol −1 ) and outstanding stability (>75% at 100–200 °C within H 2 O and SO 2 ). The “low-temperature active sites” and “dual anti-poisoning sites” contribute to excellent activity and stability. Firstly, the hierarchical structure boosts generation of active metal-support interface, which is conducive to oxygen migration (including adsorbed oxygen (O ads ), lattice oxygen (O lat ) and oxygen vacancy (O v )) and metal charge transfer (Mn 2+/3+ +Ce 4+ ↔Mn 3+/4+ +Ce 3+ , Ti 4+ +Ce 3+ ↔Ce 4+ +Ti 3+ ). This is the key to breaking through the limits of catalytic activity stability. Secondly, enhanced surface acidity favors NH 3 adsorption and activation, which accelerates -NH 2 /-NH concatenate with NO x through Eley-Rideal mechanism to generate N 2 and H 2 O. Thirdly, the dual strong SO 2 affinity sites by Ti-induced CeO 2 crystal reconstruction retard the active center affected by the sulfate species, which contributes to striking stability. This work highlights the importance of design of isolated active sites to improve SO 2 and H 2 O endurance.

Exploration of the Exceptional Capacitive Deionization Performance of CoMn2O4 Microspheres Electrode

Zhenzhen Liu,Haibo Li

The “battery type” inorganic electrode has been demonstrated the highly efficient sodium ion intercalation capacity for capacitive deionization. In this work, the CoMn 2 O 4 (CMO) microspheres with porous core-shell structure are prepared via co-precipitation and followed by annealing. The effects of annealing temperatures on the morphology, pore structure, valence state, and electrochemical behavior of CMO are explored. As electrode for capacitive deionization, the salt removal capacity and current efficiency of optimized AC || CMO device reaches up to 60.7 mg g −1 and 97.6%, respectively, and the capacity retention rate is 74.1% after 50 cycles. Remarkably, both the in-situ X-ray diffraction and ex-situ X-ray diffraction analysis features that the intercalation/de-intercalation of sodium ions are governed by (103) and (221) crystal planes of CMO. Accordingly, the density functional theory calculations realize that the adsorption energies of Na + onto (103) and (221) crystal planes are higher than that of any other crystal planes, manifesting the priorities in adsorption of sodium atoms. Furthermore, the X-ray photoelectron spectra of pristine and post-CMO electrode highlights that the reversible conversion of Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ couple is resulted from the intercalation/de-intercalation of Na + , while this is irreversible for Co 3+ /Co 2+ couple. Beyond that, the CMO electrode has been proven the selectivity removal of Na + over K + and Mg 2+ in a multi-cation stream.

Gas–solid two-phase flow (GSF) mechanochemical synthesis of dual-metal–organic frameworks and research on electrochemical properties

Jun Zhao,Bo Jin,Rufang Peng

As an alternative approach for conventional mechanochemical synthesis, a novel gas–solid two-phase flow (GSF) synthetic technique for the mechanochemical synthesis of dual metal–organic frameworks (DMOFs) was reported for the first time. The prepared CoMn2(BTC)2 was characterized by FT-IR, DTA, TG/DTG, and XRD studies. The results indicated that CoMn2(BTC)2 (BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate) was successfully synthesized after 10 min at a rate of 60 kg h−1. CoMn2O4 microspheres were also prepared via the CoMn2(BTC)2 precursor method and characterized using FT-IR, XPS, XRD, SEM, EDS, and BET methods. The electrochemical properties of the as-prepared CoMn2O4 were investigated, and the GSF results showed that the microsphere electrodes of CoMn2O4 had a high specific capacitance (969 F g−1) at a current density of 1 A g−1 in 3 M aqueous KOH solution.

Interstitial nitrogen-induced efficiency alcohol oxidation over heterogeneous N–CoMn2O4 catalyst under visible-light

Hongwei Li,Yurong Zhang,Jun Tang,Guozheng Huang,Ping Cui,Qingping Ke

Developing highly efficient and recyclable photocatalysts through harvesting solar light as energy is crucial to oxidation for industrial implementation, especially for simple transition metal oxidic catalysts without precious/heavy/rare metal dopants. Herein, we like to report the use of nitrogen-doped CoMn 2 O 4 oxide ( N –CoMn 2 O 4 ) as a heterogeneous catalyst for efficient oxidation of various alcohols such as p / m / o -methyl-substituted aromatic alcohols, p -substituted aromatic alcohols including electron-donating and electron-withdrawing substituents, heterocycle-based alcohols and secondary aromatic alcohols to the corresponding aldehydes/ketones, under visible light (>420 nm) illumination and mild condition of oxygen as oxidant and room temperature. The relation of various Co-based oxides to their catalytic performance was studied. It is shown that the Co 2+ species in N –CoMn 2 O 4 , obviously increased by the doping of nitrogen, are acted as catalytic active species coupled with the synergistic effect between Co and Mn species for the enhanced visible-light selective oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes. A plausible catalytic mechanism is proposed basis of control experiments and published studies, which suggests that this oxidation process probably occurs on Co 2+ sites via an ionic reactive oxygen species pathway and 1 O 2 and O 2 · − species are the reactive oxygen species. This simple transition metal oxide-catalyzed aerobic oxidation provides a green alternative for the manufacture of aldehydes/ketones from alcohols.

Synergistic reaction of NH3 selective catalytic reduction and CO oxidation on in-situ sulfated CoMn2O4/CeTiOx

Ning Luo,Fengyu Gao,Hengheng Liu,Lei Yi,Zirong Niu,Erhong Duan,Honghong Yi,Long Sun,Shunzheng Zhao,Yuansong Zhou,Shangfeng Du,Xiaolong Tang

The removal of NOₓ emissions from flue gas by NH 3 selective catalytic reduction (SCR) over catalysts has always been a challenge due to poisoning from the contained water and sulfur. This study demonstrates that rather than poisoning, the contained H 2 O and SO 2 can work positively through an in-situ sulfation process for CoMn 2 O 4 /CeTiOₓ (CMCT) catalysts, thus providing a synergistic effect for CO oxidation and NH 3 -SCR for improving the catalyst activity and selectivity. The obtained sulfated catalyst, achieves over 90 % conversion for NOₓ and about 100 % for CO with nearly 90 % N 2 selectivity at 225–350 °C. The mechanism studies are conducted and the enhanced effect for NH 3 -SCR is revealed from the formed Brønsted acid, surface sulfates, and the reactive oxygen species (O*) generated during CO oxidation. Furthermore, the function of CO adsorption is explored in separating reaction sites and suppressing excessive NH 3 oxidation for achieving high N 2 selectivity.

Enhanced Catalytic Degradation of Norfloxacin by Lignin-Derived Biochar-CoMn2O4 Activated Peroxymonosulfate: Synergistic Effect and Mechanism

Chunmin Xu,Long Cheng,Juan Meng,Jing Luo,Jie Jiang,Hengfei Qin

Heterogeneous catalysts with high activity, environmental adaptability, and stability are urgently needed for water pollutanion treatment. In this study, biochar (NLSBC) with a large specific surface area and multiple active sites was obtained by activating lignosulfonate with CaC 2 O 4 and CH 4 N 2 O, which was used to load CoMn 2 O 4 (CMO) to prepare NLSBC/CoMn 2 O 4 to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to achieve efficient degradation of norfloxacin (NOR). The degradation rate of NOR by the NLSBC/CMO-PMS system under optimal conditions (NOR-30 mg/L, PMS-0.25 mM, and catalyst-20 mg) was as high as 99.42%, and the degradation rate remained at 79.09% after five cycles, which was suitable for various natural water sources. Combined with quenching experiments, EPR analysis, and electrochemical analysis, it was proven that , 1 O 2 and electron transfer were the main reaction pathways of the NLSBC/CMO-PMS system. The ecotoxicity assessment showed that the toxicity level was significantly reduced after treatment with NLSBC/CMO catalyst. In summary, NLSBC/CMO provides a new idea for developing friendly catalysts and has potential applications in treating organic wastewater. Graphical This study demonstrates that a spinel metal oxide supported on biochar catalyst (2NLSBC/CMO) successfully activates PMS to degrade NOR. The catalyst, characterized by its rich Co/Mn active sites and efficient electron transfer, achieves an 99.42% NOR degradation rate within 60 min. The 2NLSBC/CMO/PMS system produces reactive species, including SO4•-, •OH, •O2- and 1O2, thereby removing NOR.

Synthesis of size-controlled CoMn2O4 quantum dots supported on carbon nanotubes for electrocatalytic oxygen reduction/evolution

Shi Jiajia,Lei Kaixiang,Sun Weiyi,Li Fujun,Cheng Fangyi,Chen Jun

A combined hot-injection and heat-up method was developed to synthesize monodisperse and uniform CoMn 2 O 4 quantum dots (CMO QDs). CMO QDs with average size of 2.0, 3.9, and 5.4 nm were selectively obtained at 80, 90, and 105 °C, respectively. The CMO QDs supported on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were employed as catalysts for the oxygen reduction/evolution reaction (ORR/OER) in alkaline solution to investigate their size-performance relationship. The results revealed that the amount of surface-adsorbed oxygen and the band gap energy, which affect the charge transfer in the oxygen electrocatalysis processes, strongly depend on the size of the CMO QDs. The CMO-3.9/CNT hybrid, consisting of CNT-supported CMO QDs of 3.9 nm size, possesses a moderate amount of surface-adsorbed oxygen, a lower band gap energy, and a larger charge carrier concentration, and exhibits the highest electrocatalytic activity among the hybrid materials investigated. Moreover, the CMO-3.9/CNT hybrid displays ORR and OER performances similar to those of the benchmark Pt/C and RuO 2 catalysts, respectively, due to the strong carbon-oxide interactions and the high dispersion of CoMn 2 O 4 QDs on the carbon substrate; this reveals the huge potential of the CMO-3.9/CNT hybrid as a bifunctional OER/ORR electrocatalyst. The present results highlight the importance of controlling the size of metal oxide nanodots in the design of active oxygen electrocatalysts based on spinel-type, nonprecious metal oxides.

Ordered porous Mn − Co spinel oxide (CoMn2O4) with vacancies modulation as efficient electrocatalyst for Li − O2 battery

Linna Dai,Xin Zhou,Yuan Yang,Pei Hu,Lijie Ci

Nonaqueous Li − O 2 battery (LOB) is considered one of the most promising energy storage system due to its ultrahigh theoretical specific capacity (3500 Wh kg −1 ). Introducing vacancies in CoMn 2 O 4 catalysts is regarded as an effective strategy to enhance the electrochemical performances of LOB. However, the relation between vacancy types in CoMn 2 O 4 and catalytic performances in the LOB remains ambiguous. Herein, ordered porous CoMn 2 O 4 with oxygen and metal vacancies is obtained via solvothermal reaction followed by temperature-controlled calcination using polystyrene spheres as templates. The increase in treatment temperature reduces the content of oxygen vacancies while increasing that of the metal vacancies. Notably, experimental results and theoretical calculations show that oxygen vacancies in CoMn 2 O 4 have a greater influence than metal vacancies in modulating the LiO 2 adsorption during the reaction processes and reducing the overpotential. CoMn 2 O 4 synthesized at 500 ℃ (CoMnO-500) with higher oxygen vacancies exhibits stronger adsorption onto the LiO 2 , facilitating the formation of film-like Li 2 O 2 . Therefore, an LOB with the CoMnO-500 catalyst presents the lowest overpotential of 1.2 V and longest cycle lifespan of 286 cycles at a current density of 200 mA g −1 . This study offers insights into the effect of CoMn 2 O 4 vacancies on the formation pathway of Li 2 O 2 discharge products.

ZIF-67-derived hierarchical hollow Co3O4@CoMn2O4 nanocages for efficient catalytic oxidation of formaldehyde at low temperature

Ning Xiang,Yarong Bai,Qiaoyan Li,Xiaojin Han,Jianfeng Zheng,Qingsong Zhao,Yaqin Hou,Zhanggen Huang

Low-temperature HCHO oxidation over transition-metal oxide catalysts is still a ‘‘hot potato”. Herein, hierarchical hollow Co 3 O 4 @CoMn 2 O 4 nanocages (Co 3 O 4 @CoMn 2 O 4 -NCs) were designed and prepared by using ZIF-67 nanocubes (ZIF-67-NCs) engaged self-templated method. Compared with single-compositional Co 3 O 4 -NCs and solid CoMn 2 O 4 -NPs, the as-prepared Co 3 O 4 @CoMn 2 O 4 -NCs exhibited much superb HCHO oxidation performance, achieving 90% HCHO conversion at 107°C. The characterization results manifested that the special hierarchical hollow structure of Co 3 O 4 @CoMn 2 O 4 -NCs facilitated the exposure of active sites and the generation of oxygen vacancies, thereby endowing them with higher O 2 activation ability and richer reactive oxygen species (ROS). In-situ DRIFTS results suggested that richer reactive oxygen species (ROS) of hierarchical hollow Co 3 O 4 @CoMn 2 O 4 -NCs boosted the oxidation of formate species, which was the rate-determining step for HCHO oxidation. Meanwhile, the interaction of cobalt and manganese species of Co 3 O 4 @CoMn 2 O 4 -NCs enhanced their low-temperature reducibility. Eventually, benefiting from the dual merits of structure and composition, Co 3 O 4 @CoMn 2 O 4 -NCs manifested much better HCHO oxidation performance. This work demonstrates that metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived mixed-metal oxides with hierarchical hollow structure possess promising application perspective for low-temperature HCHO oxidation.

Grain-boundary-rich high-entropy selenide combining with hollow cerium-doped CoMn2O4 nanocubes for enhanced photoelectrochemical aptasensing

Yi-Hong Chen,Ai-Jun Wang,Xin-Sheng Li,Li-Ping Mei,Jiu-Ju Feng,Tuck Yun Cheang

Sulfadimethoxine (SDM) is an antibiotic used in treating bacterial infections, but it poses health risks if it enters human body through food chains. In this study, a grain-boundary-rich high-entropy selenide (CdCoCuMnZn) x Se was prepared by a one-pot solvothermal strategy. Its microstructure, photoactivity and photostability were investigated using various techniques, whose dynamic mechanism was elucidated and the role of elemental doping in enhancing photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance was rigorously evaluated in control groups. For the first time, this high-entropy selenide was applied to construct a PEC aptasensor for highly sensitive and selective SDM detection. A signal amplification strategy was implemented using ferrocene-functionalized hollow cerium-doped CoMn 2 O 4 nanocubes (Ce-CoMn 2 O 4 -Fc). The PEC biosensor exhibited a broad linear range from 0.01 to 1000 ng mL −1 and a low detection limit of 1.2 pg mL −1 . The sensor was successfully used to detect SDM in milk and water samples, yielding reliable results. This work provides constructive insights into PEC sensor development using the high-entropy material and Ce-CoMn 2 O 4 -Fc for enhanced performance. It demonstrates significant potential applications in environmental risk assessment and food safety monitoring using multicomponent materials.

Hollow Cu2O@CoMn2O4 Nanoreactors for Electrochemical NO Reduction to NH3: Elucidating the Void-Confinement Effects on Intermediates

Chunpeng Bai,Shiying Fan,Xinyong Li,Zhaodong Niu,Jing Wang,Zhiyuan Liu,Dongke Zhang

Hollow nanoreactors show great potential in catalysis due to the void-confinement effect. Yet few studies have investigated the void-confinement effect of hollow nanoreactors on intermediates. Herein, electrochemical NO reduction to NH 3 (ENOR) is used as a probe reaction to study the void-confinement effect of hollow Cu 2 O@CoMn 2 O 4 nanoreactors on intermediates. Combined with the results of catalytic activity, H 2 -treated in situ diffusion Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and the finite-element method simulation confirm that the void-confinement effect on the intermediate is the main reason for enhanced ENOR efficiency. Additionally, theoretical calculations also show that the Cu sites of Cu 2 O@CoMn 2 O 4 nanoreactors are favorable for the formation of *NOH intermediates. This work not only gives an insight into void-confinement effect of hollow nanoreactors on intermediates but also provides a valuable strategy for improving ENOR.
