Thin hydrogel films based on lectin-saccharide biospecific interaction for label-free optical glucose sensing

Qian Li,Ying Guan,Yongjun Zhang

Concanavalin A (Con A) has been widely used as glucose recognition element in glucose sensors, however, these sensors typically detect glucose by fluorescence, and suffer from laborious labeling processes. Here a new label-free optical Con A-based glucose sensor was designed. The sensor uses Con A-containing thin hydrogel films as sensing material and Fabry-Perot cavity simultaneously, which were fabricated by layer-by-layer assembly of Con A and dextran, using lectin-saccharide biospecific interaction as driving force. These films display Fabry-Perot fringes on their reflection spectra, from which optical path length of the films can be calculated. The films swell upon addition of glucose, which causes a shift of Fabry-Perot fringes on the reflection spectra of the film, from which the glucose concentration can be reported. The glucose-induced swelling is reversible, and the increase in optical path length increases linearly with glucose concentration over a wide range of glucose concentration. The sensor works well at physiological temperature, pH and ionic strength. Other sugars, which may present in blood, do not interfere with glucose detection, because of their very low concentrations in the blood. Particularly, unlike other hydrogel-based sensors, this sensor responds quite fast, because the hydrogel films are very thin. The new sensor may have potential for real time, continuous glucose monitoring.

Proximity Ligation Assay with Three-Way Junction-Induced Rolling Circle Amplification for Ultrasensitive Electronic Monitoring of Concanavalin A

Bingqian Liu,Bing Zhang,Guonan Chen,Huanghao Yang,Dianping Tang

A new signal amplification strategy based on target-induced proximity ligation assay accompanying three-way junction-based rolling chain amplification was designed for ultrasensitive detection of concanavalin A (Con A) by coupling with a sequential injection mode. To construct such a proximity ligation assay system, two types of magnetic sensing probes including glucosamine/DNA1-conjugated magnetic bead (GA-MB-DNA1) and glucosamine/DNA2-labeled magnetic bead (GA-MB-DNA2) were first synthesized and prepared through a typical carbodiimide coupling. In the presence of target Con A, GA-MB-DNA1 and GA-MB-DNA2 were ligated together based on the interaction between Con A and the conjugated glucosamine on the MB, thereby resulting in the formation of a three-way DNA junction because of partial base pairing on the DNA1/DNA2. With the aid of ligase and polymerase, the formed three-way DNA junction could be used as the primer to produce numerous repeated oligonucleotide sequences through rolling circle amplification (RCA) reaction. The formed long oligonucleotide strand could cause the intercalation of numerous positively charged methylene blue molecules with a negatively charged DNA backbone. During the electrochemical measurement, each of the intercalated indicators could produce an electrochemical signal within the applied potentials, resulting in the amplification of detectable electronic signal. By monitoring the change in the signal, we could indirectly determine the concentration of target Con A in the sample. Under the optimal conditions, the developed sensing platform exhibited high sensitivity for detection of Con A with a wide dynamic range of 1.96 pM to 98 nM and a low limit of detection (LOD) of 1.5 pM at the 3sB level. Intra-assay and interassay coefficients of variation were less than 8.9% and 9.7%, respectively. In addition, the methodology was validated by assaying Con A spiked samples including newborn cattle serum and peanuts, and the recovery in all cases was 88.8–134.7%.

Synthesis of High Molecular Weight Vinylphenyl-Con Taining MQ Silicone Resin via Hydrosilylation Reaction

Jianye Ji,Xin Ge,Weijie Liang,Xiaoyan Pang,Ruoling Liu,Shuyi Wen,Jiaqi Sun,Xunjun Chen,Jianfang Ge

To overcome the inherent limitation that the preparation of high molecular weight MQ copolymers (Mw ≥ 30,000 g/mol) via the hydrolysis and condensation of solicate salts generally results in an intractable gel, vinylphenyl-containing MQ silicone resin with a high molecular weight was designed and synthesized through the hydrosilylation reaction of vinyl-containing MQ silicone resin and linear poly(diphenylsiloxane) with two terminal Si–H bonds. The weight average molecular weight of these modified copolymers reported here is at least 30,000 dal·mol−1. These polymers have favorable thermal stability and a higher refractive index than that of the base resin due to the formation of novel regular macromolecular structures and the introduction of phenyl groups. These inorganic/organic hybrid materials could be used as a potential component for temperature-resistance electronics adhesive, heat-resistant coatings and high-performance liquid silicone rubber. Moreover, the proposed process also provides a possibility to choose higher molecular weight MQ silicones according to application requirements. Keywords:MQ silicone resin;modified;hydrosilylation;high molecular weight

Fabricating three-dimensional carbohydrate hydrogel microarray for lectin-mediated bacterium capturing

Xia Liu,Zhen Lei,Fuyao Liu,Dianjun Liu,Zhenxin Wang

Herein, a three-dimensional carbohydrate modified polyacrylamide hydrogel microarray (3D carbohydrate hydrogel microarray) has been fabricated and employed as micro-reactor for capturing Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) by multivalent binding of concanavalin A (Con A) with O-antigen on the cellular surface of E. coli and immobilized monosaccharides on hydrogel spot, and the interactions of type 1 fimbriae of E. coli with immobilized monosaccharides. Because of the transparent performance of polyacrylamide hydrogel, the captured E. coli can be directly observed by a conventional microscope under a bright-field mode. The experimental result demonstrates that α-D-mannopyranoside (Man-α) modified hydrogel surface shows high efficiency of E. coli capturing. The 3D Man-α hydrogel microarray-based assay shows reasonable low detection limit (1.0×10 4 cells/mL) and large dynamic range (1.0×10 5 to 1.0×10 9 cells/mL) for detecting E. coli . In addition, bacterial adhesion inhibition assay has been demonstrated by the interactions of E. coli with ten saccharides , and satisfactory results have been obtained.

CoN//Co9S8 co-embedded in reduced graphene oxide as catalyst for catalytic conversion of polysulfides

Yuxiang Tang,Yake Yuan,Yuxue Mo,Haotian Tang,Mianze Wei,Haiqing Zhou,Tian Sheng,Chunsheng Li,Yan Sun,Xiaolin Wei

Lithium-sulfur (Li–S) batteries with high theoretical specific capacity of 1675 mAh g −1 and energy density of 2600 Wh kg −1 are considered as a promising candidate for energy conversion and storage devices in future. However, some critical dilemmas such as low real energy density , high solubility of ether-based electrolytes and slow redox kinetics of long-chain polysulfides remain unsettled hindering their development. Here we design and propose a high-performance sulfur host material constructed by growing CoN/Co 9 S 8 nanoparticles enclosed in reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and Co 9 S 8 modified separator to enhance the electrochemical performance of Li–S batteries . The results of first principal calculations confirm that the calculated adsorption energies of Li 2 S 8 , Li 2 S 6 , Li 2 S 4 and Li 2 S 2 on the Co 9 S 8 (111) surface are lower than that of the CoN (111) surface, indicating that the Co 9 S 8 has stronger adsorbing effect with polysulfides . Furthermore, the catalytic effect in Li 2 S 6 symmetric batteries and the nucleation of the Li 2 S tests display that the CoN/Co 9 S 8 @RGO has a fast conversion reaction kinetics and catalytic effect of polysulfides , thereby inhibiting the leakage of the polysulfides. Consequently, the S@CoN/Co 9 S 8 @RGO cathode with Co 9 S 8 layer represents a high discharge capacity of 1367.7 mAh g −1 at 0.1C and a prolonged lifespan over 700 cycles at 1 C with an extremely low decay rate of 0.06 % per cycle and high cycling stability.

Boosting the electrocatalytic activity on CoN/Ni3N heterojunction by Ce modification for efficient water splitting

Peihao Ge,Xinping Zhang,Jianmin Yu,Jiao Yang,Lishan Peng

Facile electrodeposition-nitridation yields Ce-CoN/Ni 3 N heterostructured catalyst. • Ce tunes electronic structure and generates N vacancies to accelerate HER kinetics. • Ce activates lattice oxygen and drives reconstruction for dual AEM/LOM OER. • Symmetric flow electrolyzer achieves 500 mA cm −2 at 2.04  V over 500 h durability. The design of highly efficient and low-cost bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting (OWS) is essential to realize a sustainable hydrogen economy. Heterojunction engineering can realize synergistic catalysis by coupling distinct active components, while the low activity at the interfaces needs further improvement by introducing elaborate elements. Herein, we constructed a Ce-modified CoN/Ni 3 N heterojunction catalyst via sequential electrodeposition and nitridation. The introduction of redox-active Ce modulates the interfacial electronic configuration and creates a high density of nitrogen vacancies (N v ), substantially boosting the bifunctional catalytic performance of Ce-CoN/Ni 3 N. The optimal catalyst requires overpotentials of only 27 mV and 267 mV to deliver 10 mA cm −2 for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 1 M KOH. A two-electrode flow electrolyzer equipped with Ce-CoN/Ni 3 N as bifunctional electrodes achieves a high industrial current density of 500 mA cm −2 at a cell voltage of 2.04 V and maintains stable operation for 500 h. Mechanistic investigations reveal that Ce incorporation elevates the oxidation states of Ni and Co and promotes the generation of N v , which accelerates water dissociation and HER kinetics. Meanwhile, Ce incorporation facilitates surface reconstruction from β -NiOOH to the more active γ -NiOOH phase and activates lattice oxygen, enabling cooperative adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM) and lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM) pathways that collectively enhance OER kinetics. This study reveals that heterointerface engineering offers an effective and feasible strategy for creating highly active bifunctional electrocatalysts toward practical water electrolysis. Self-Adaptive Reaction Microenvironment via Charge Redistribution in Metastable Co3O4-CoN for Efficient Hydrogen Electrocatalysis

Selvam Mathi,Weijiang Gan,Adewale K. Ipadeola,Hao Yang,Aboubakr M. Abdullah,Zhongmin Wang,Mohammad Al-Mamun,M.-Sadeeq Balogun

Regulating the reaction microenvironment at the catalyst-electrolyte interface is a key lever for accelerating alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) kinetics. However, most noble-metal-free oxide catalysts are limited by rigid electronic structures that impede dynamic charge redistribution. Here, we develop a metastable Co 3 O 4 -CoN catalyst that establishes a self-adaptive reaction microenvironment through charge redistribution at the oxide-nitride interface, enhancing alkaline HER kinetics. Nitrogen- and vanadium-codoped Co 3 O 4 -CoN hollow nanowires (HNV/Co 3 O 4 -CoN) were synthesized through a programmed reduction-annealing route, yielding mixed-valence cobalt surfaces with spatially confined defects and dopant gradients. This metastability-induced electronic flexibility, promotes water dissociation on oxide-derived sites while maintaining favorable hydrogen adsorption on nitride-modified regions, improving both elementary steps of alkaline HER. Ultraviolet and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicate pronounced interfacial charge redistribution and work-function modulation induced by dopant incorporation and metastable phase coupling. The optimized HNV/Co 3 O 4 -CoN catalyst delivers an ultralow overpotential of 7 mV@10 mA cm -2 and 264 mV@1000 mA cm -2 high current density, while sustaining stable electrolysis at ≥500 mA cm -2 . Mechanistic analysis supports reduced barriers for water dissociation and near-thermoneutral hydrogen adsorption on the coupled interface. This work demonstrates a generalizable strategy to construct electronically adaptable surfaces for high-current-density, noble-metal-free hydrogen evolution.

Graphdiyne-Induced CoN/CoS2 Heterojunction: Boosting Efficiency for Bifunctional Oxygen Electrochemistry in Zinc-Air Batteries

Min Cui,Yanan Yuan,Yue Wu,Zhongmei Che,Peixuan Li,Xiaochen Yang,Yuqi Chen,Wei Hu,Jingui Wang,Shuai Wang,Yingshu Guo,Zexing Wu

Graphical This graphical abstract visually summarizes the main findings of the study, showcasing how the strategic design of a GDY-induced CoN/CoS 2 heterojunction within a nitrogen-doped carbon substrate leads to a more efficient and durable electrocatalyst for both oxygen reduction and evolution reactions in high-performance zinc-air batteries. The performance of zinc-air battery is constrained by the sluggish rate of oxygen electrode reaction, particularly under high current discharge conditions where the kinetic process of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) decelerates significantly. To address this challenge, we present a novel phase transition strategy that facilitates the creation of a heteroatom-doped heterointerface (CoN/CoS 2 ). The meticulously engineered CoN/CoS 2 /NC electrocatalyst displays a superior ORR half-wave potential of 0.87 V and an OER overpotential of 320 mV at 10 mA cm −2 . Experimental and computational analysis confirm that the CoN/CoS 2 heterostructure optimizes local charge distribution, accelerates electron transfer, and tunes active sites for enhanced catalysis. Notably, this heterojunction improves stability by resisting corrosion and degradation under harsh alkaline conditions, thus demonstrating superior performance and longevity in a custom-made liquid zinc-air battery. This research provides valuable practical and theoretical foundations for designing efficient heterointerfaces in electrocatalysis applications.

Crystalline-amorphous Cu0.81Ni0.19@CoN/Mo2N heterostructure nanosheets for carbon-free flexible Zn-air batteries-driven water electrolysis

Jing Qu,Zhongmin Wang,Zhixiao Zhu,Zeba Khanam,Weijiang Gan,Sakariyau Babatunde Abdulkadir,Selvam Mathi,Jianqiu Deng,Feng Wang,M.-Sadeeq Balogun

Designing carbon-free electrocatalysts that can efficiently drive hydrogen evolution (HER), oxygen evolution (OER), and zinc-air battery (ZAB) reactions in alkaline media remains difficult because of the different kinetic requirements of each process. Herein, we demonstrates a carbon-free crystalline-amorphous (C-A) Cu 0.81 Ni 0.19 @CoN/Mo 2 N heterostructured nanosheets synthesized through a single-step annealing method that simultaneously forms a crystalline alloy core and an amorphous nitride shell. This direct route eliminates carbon supports and avoids multi-stage alloying or nitridation, resulting in tightly coupled C–A interfaces that accelerate charge transfer and stabilize active sites. The catalyst delivers low overpotentials of 43 mV for HER and 297 mV for OER at 10 mA cm −2 , enabling an overall water splitting (OWS) low voltage of 1.56 V. It also maintains excellent durability under harsh electrochemical conditions owing to the absence of carbon, mitigating agglomeration and degradation. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the Cu 0.81 Ni 0.19 /CoN optimizes hydrogen adsorption, while the Cu 0.81 Ni 0.19 /Mo 2 N promotes oxygen intermediate formation. Integrated into a flexible ZAB, the catalyst exhibits a high specific capacity of 811.6 mAh g −1 , a small voltage gap of 1.15 V at 50 mA cm −2 , and 150 h of stable cycling. A self-powered system coupling this flexible ZAB-OWS system further demonstrates the practical viability of this one-step-engineered C–A heterostructure for sustainable energy applications.

Quenching-induced anion defects and precise Ru doping on Co3O4/CoN heterostructures for efficient overall water splitting performance

Shuangshuang Li,Jie Liu,Yunmei Du,Mengmeng Wang,Yuanxiang Gu,Dehong Chen,Ruiyong Zhang,Lei Wang

The difficulty of nitride modification is to develop simple and efficient strategies to induce defects and efficiently capture Ru atoms. With these in mind, this work innovatively constructed a Ru-Co 3 O 4 /CoN-L catalyst with abundant anion defects (oxygen vacancies (V O ) and nitrogen vacancies (V N )) using the nitridation-quenching-Ru doping strategy. Surprisingly, the porous structure provided more active sites, and the V N and V O were conducive to promoting the anchoring of Ru atoms. These significantly improved the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performances of the Ru-Co 3 O 4 /CoN/NF-L catalyst. The density functional theory results showed that the anion defects optimized the hydrogen adsorption capacity of the Ru active sites for the HER. Furthermore, Ru dopants and anion defects reduced the OER energy barrier of the Co-active sites, accelerating the HER and OER kinetics. This study proposes a new concept for defect construction and nitride-structure optimization.

Cation Exchange in Colloidal Transition Metal Nitride Nanocrystals

Lei Yang,Liping Zhang,Ye Li,Byoung-Hoon Lee,Jiheon Kim,Hyeon Seok Lee,Jinsol Bok,Yanbo Ma,Wansheng Zhou,Du Yuan,An-Liang Wang,Megalamane S. Bootharaju,Hemin Zhang,Taeghwan Hyeon,Junze Chen

Transition metal nitride (TMN)-based nanostructures have emerged as promising materials for diverse applications in electronics, photonics, energy storage, and catalysis due to their highly desirable physicochemical properties. However, synthesizing TMN-based nanostructures with designed compositions and morphologies poses challenges, especially in the solution phase. The cation exchange reaction (CER) stands out as a versatile postsynthetic strategy for preparing nanostructures that are otherwise inaccessible through direct synthesis. Nevertheless, exploration of the CER in TMNs lags behind that in metal chalcogenides and metal phosphides. Here, we demonstrate cation exchange in colloidal metal nitride nanocrystals, employing Cu3N nanocrystals as starting materials to synthesize Ni4N and CoN nanocrystals. By controlling the reaction conditions, Cu3N@Ni4N and Cu3N@CoN core@shell heterostructures with tunable compositions can also be obtained. The Ni4N and CoN nanocrystals are evaluated as catalysts for the electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Remarkably, CoN nanocrystals demonstrate superior OER performance with a low overpotential of 286 mV at 10 mA·cm–2, a small Tafel slope of 89 mV·dec–1, and long-term stability. Our CER approach in colloidal TMNs offers a new strategy for preparing other metal nitride nanocrystals and their heterostructures, paving the way for prospective applications.

A signal-on electrochemiluminescence biosensor for detecting Con A using phenoxy dextran-graphite-like carbon nitride as signal probe

Xin Ou,Xingrong Tan,Xiaofang Liu,Qiyi Lu,Shihong Chen,Shaping Wei

A novel signal-on electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor for detecting concanavalin A (Con A) was fabricated with phenoxy dextran-graphite-like carbon nitride (DexP-g-C 3 N 4 ) as signal probe . In this construction strategy, the nanocomposites of three-dimensional graphene and gold nanoparticles (3D-GR-AuNPs) were used as matrix for high loading of glucose oxidase (GOx), which served as recognition element for bounding Con A. Con A further interacted with DexP-g-C 3 N 4 through a specific carbohydrate-Con A interaction to achieve a sandwiched scheme. With the increase of Con A incubated onto the electrode, the ECL signal resulted from DexP-g-C 3 N 4 would enhance, thus achieving a signal-on ECL biosensor for Con A detection. Due to the integration of the virtues of 3D-GR-AuNPs and the excellent ECL performance of DexP-g-C 3 N 4 , the prepared biosensor exhibits a wide linear response range from 0.05   ng/mL to 100   ng/mL and a low detection limit of 17   pg/mL (S/N=3).
