Ti/CoTiO3-TiO2 for Efficient Degradation of Refractory Organic Dyes: Synthesis, Characterization, and Electrocatalytic Properties

Guohua Dong,Kun Lang,Dong-Feng Chai,Wenzhi Zhang,Ming Zhao,Lili Sui,Jialong Zhong,Xinyu Jin,Yitong Fan

A Ti/CoTiO3-TiO2 catalyst electrode was successfully prepared by a one-step impregnation pyrolysis method and systematically investigated through scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The electrochemical characterization results containing cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and linear sweep voltammetry further indicate that the as-prepared Ti/CoTiO3-TiO2 has higher oxygen evolution potential, lower resistance, higher electrochemical active surface area, and a longer lifetime than that of the pristine Ti/TiO2. A variety of dyes were selected as the target degraded pollutants for evaluating the electrocatalytic performance of Ti/CoTiO3-TiO2. Compared with those of the Ti/TiO2 and other counterparts, the Ti/CoTiO3-TiO2 shows significantly higher degradation efficiency, up to 98.5% under optimal conditions. Moreover, the Ti/CoTiO3-TiO2 displays superior stability and reusability. The higher electrochemical activity of Ti/CoTiO3-TiO2 than Ti/TiO2 may be the main reason for electrocatalytic performance enhancement, and the numerous ·OH and O2− radicals generated on the anode surface may be the primary active species for dyes degradation. In addition, the possible degradation mechanism was inferred by analyzing the measured intermediates. Consequently, this work offers a strategy via constructing titanate composites to enhance the electrocatalytic degradation performance for the refractory organic pollutants.

Boosted Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction to CO with Perovskite CoTiO3

Junli Xu,Weilin Zheng,Wanpeng Sun,Zhaoyu Wang

In this study, we report the facile synthesis of perovskite CoTiO3nanorods and their application as an efficient, noble-metal-free cocatalyst for visible-light-driven photocatalytic CO2reduction to CO. Under optimized conditions (MeCN/H2O/TEOA, λ > 420 nm), CoTiO3-600 enhanced the CO yield by more than 15-fold compared to the system without CoTiO3, achieving 29.9 μmol of CO after 1 h of irradiation. Isotopic labeling with13CO2confirmed that the evolved CO originated solely from CO2. Mechanistic investigations revealed that CoTiO3facilitates rapid electron transfer and suppresses charge recombination, as evidenced by photoluminescence quenching. Furthermore, the cocatalyst exhibited excellent stability and reusability, with no significant structural changes observed after multiple reaction cycles. Collectively, this work demonstrates that CoTiO3serves as a cost-effective and robust cocatalyst, holding great promise for sustainable photocatalytic CO2fixation.

Synergistic Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution and Peroxymonosulfate Activation over CoS/CoTiO3 Nanocomposites for Levofloxacin Degradation

Zhong Yu,Xu Huan-Yan,Li Bo,Wang Bao-Ying,Liu Dan-Qi,Zhang Yu-hang,Zhao Lin

The global energy crisis and escalating water pollution necessitate the development of sustainable technologies that integrate environmental remediation with clean energy production. Therefore, if key technologies for hydrogen production from organic pollutant waste liquids can be developed, it will have significant value for both energy production and environmental governance. In this work, CoS/CoTiO 3 composite catalysts were prepared, and the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction was coupled with advanced persulfate oxidation technology. The degradation performance of levofloxacin (LEV) catalyst in a coupled system was systematically evaluated, and its electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity was investigated. The experimental results showed that under the conditions of an initial LEV concentration of 20 mg·L –1 , catalyst dosage of 0.5 g·L –1 , and PMS dosage of 0.8 mmol·L –1 , the degradation rate of LEV by CoS/CoTiO 3 coupling system could reach over 97%, significantly better than that of a single CoTiO 3 coupling system (50%). In terms of electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance, the overpotential of CoS/CoTiO 3 composite catalyst decreased by about 300 mV compared to CoTiO 3 , with a Tafel slope of 251.7 mV·dec –1 , while the Tafel slope of CoTiO 3 was 329.2 mV·dec –1 , indicating a significant enhancement in the hydrogen evolution reaction kinetics of the composite material. The CoS/CoTiO 3 composite catalyst constructed in this study achieves efficient degradation of organic pollutants and synergistic coupling of electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution, providing a technological approach for waste liquid resource utilization and clean energy production. It has important application potential in the fields of environmental pollution control and hydrogen energy development.

Fe-doped ilmenite CoTiO3 for antibiotic removal: Electronic modulation and enhanced activation of peroxymonosulfate

Jiahao Wei,Dandan Han,Jingtao Bi,Junbo Gong

Heterogeneous Fenton-like catalytic oxidation is a promising method for organic pollutants removal. However, the catalytic activity is restricted by the redox cycles of active sites. In this study, Fe was doped into ilmenite cobalt titanate to prepare Fe-doped CoTiO 3 catalysts for antibiotic tetracycline (TC) degradation. Experiments and theoretical calculations illustrated that doping Fe in CoTiO 3 increased the electron density of Co atoms of active sites, enhancing the redox cycles during peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, and facilitating the generation of radicals for degrading pollutants. After doping Fe, over 99% of TC (20 mg/L) can be degraded in 40 min, and the reaction rate increased 5 folds compared with the pristine CoTiO 3 . The inherent crystal stability of ilmenite guarantees the reusability of catalysts and limited cobalt ions leaching (≤0.22 mg/L). Besides, the impacts of PMS concentration, catalyst dosage, initial pH, coexisting ions, and reaction temperature on TC removal were systematically investigated, and the possible degradation pathway was proposed. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra indicated that sulfate radicals and singlet oxygen participated in TC degradation. This work provides new clues and strategies to construct highly efficient catalysts for heterogeneous catalytic oxidation.

Unlocking the superior flexibility and enhanced catalytic oxidation performance of CoTiO3 nanofibrous membranes through zirconium doping

Haoru Shan,Wenqiang Wang,Zhirong Wang,Junxiong Zhang,Jiayi Xia,Qixia Liu,Wei Zhang,Jianlong Ge,Qiuxia Fu

The development of continuous CoTiO 3 (CTO) fibers with prominent catalytic oxidation activity, tunable fibrous structures, and improved recyclability is appealing for application in efficient organic wastewater treatment; however, inescapable flaws remain, such as their inherent brittleness and adverse operability. Herein, a facile and effective strategy is proposed for the fabrication of flexible and mechanically robust CTO nanofibrous membranes through a combination of element doping and sol–gel-assisted electrospinning. Compared with pristine CTO fibers, the resulting zirconium-doped CoTiO 3 (ZCTO) nanofibrous membranes displayed remarkably enhanced flexibility and tensile mechanics, which were attributed to their lower crystallinity, smaller grain size, and fewer fiber surface defects. The developed ZCTO fibrous membrane demonstrated exceptional resistance to bending fatigue, retaining a polymer-like bending rigidity of approximately 25 mN even after undergoing 200 reciprocating bending cycles. Furthermore, the incorporation of zirconium into CTO clearly had an advantageous effect on the formation of oxygen vacancies, thereby enhancing the surface adsorption of peroxymonosulfate (PMS), accelerating the electron transfer process, and weakening the peroxy bonds. The tetracycline degradation efficiency of the ZCTO fibers remained at 81.4% within 10 min after 5 continuous cycles. Benefiting from their robust mechanical properties and excellent catalytic activity, the fabricated membranes demonstrated outstanding dynamic catalytic performance under gravity-driven conditions. More importantly, the reported strategy might be adopted and extended to develop a wide range of ceramic fibers with enhanced flexibility and mechanics for catalytic oxidation.

Synergistic Z-Scheme Charge Separation and PMS Activation in Engineered 2D CoTiO3/TiO2 Composites for Superior Photocatalysis

Deng Min,Zhang Shasha,Liang Jiayi,Li Ziyuan,Jiang Hongbo,Zhao Weiwei,Pang Jingman,Wang Yan

A plate-like CoTiO 3/ TiO 2 nanocomposite was synthesized via H 2 O 2 pretreatment of layered hydrogen titanate (HTO) followed by Co 2+ ion exchange and topotactic transformation. The H 2 O 2 pre-intercalation expanded the interlayer spacing and introduced active peroxy groups, facilitating subsequent ion exchange. The resulting composite retained the plate-like morphology and exhibited enhanced visible-light photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B (RhB). Under optimal conditions, the degradation efficiency reached 96.4%. A strong synergistic effect between the catalyst and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was observed, significantly accelerating RhB removal. The catalyst also showed good reusability (> 90% after 5 cycles). Structural, morphological, and optical characterizations (XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, Raman, FTIR) were performed. This work provides a novel strategy for designing 2D heterojunction photocatalysts with efficient PMS activation. Highlights • A novel “H 2 O 2 pre-intercalation–topotactic transformation” strategy is pioneered for the controllable synthesis of 2D CoTiO 3 /TiO 2 heterojunctions. • A remarkable synergy between photocatalysis and PMS activation is achieved, leading to >96% degradation efficiency of RhB with excellent cycling stability (>90% after 5 runs). • The interfacial charge-transfer pathway and the dual-channel radical generation mechanism are unraveled, establishing a clear structure–activity relationship. CoTiO3-reinforced TiO2 composite hollow microspheres for high-capacity and long-cycle-life lithium ion battery anodes

Guanzheng Wang,Xiaoli Zhan,Wenjiang He,Wenshen Tang,Zhentao Yuan,Lu Li,Xiao Wang,Zhaolin Zhan

Titania (TiO 2 ) is widely recognized as an intercalation-type anode material with favorable parameters of low cost, abundant reserves, high safety, and long life. However, electrode kinetics within TiO 2 is limited, resulting in a theoretical capacity below 335 mAh g −1 . Here, CoTiO 3 was fused with anatase (A)/rutile (R) biphasic TiO 2 to construct multi-scale hybrid CoTiO 3 /A/R-TiO 2 –2 hollow microspheres with a TiO 2 content of about 90 % in this work. The average particle size of the CoTiO 3 /A/R-TiO 2 –2 anode was about 1.97 μm, with a high specific surface area of 76.67 m 2  g −1 , a pore volume of 0.16 cm 3  g −1 , and a large pore size of 8.55 nm. When deployed as an anode in a lithium-ion battery, it provided a high reversible specific capacity of 455 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at 0.5C. After repeated charge/discharge cycles, a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film rich in conducting LiF was formed on the surface of the electrode. Therefore, the high capacity of the anode was mainly attributed to the stable multi-scale hybrid CoTiO 3 /A/R-TiO 2 hollow microspheres and the thin, uniform SEI film. This strategy provided a viable solution for the design of long-life, high-capacity conventional oxide semiconductor anodes.

Visible-light driven synergistic adsorption-photocatalysis by S-scheme CoTiO3@Cu-BDC-NH2 MOF photocatalyst for tetracycline and chromium removal

Soodamani Periyasamy,Jun Hou,Yang Li,Natrayasamy Viswanathan,Zijun Yang,Guoxiang You,Jun Wu,Zhaoqin Huang

This study focuses on the fabrication of an effective heterojunction composite, CoTiO 3 /Cu-BDC-NH 2 MOF (CT@CuMOF) prepared for TC and Cr(VI) removal from water through a synergistic adsorptive-photocatalytic degradation process. CT@CuMOF composite exhibited maximum removal of 21.4 mg/g for TC and 42.1 mg/g for Cr(VI) under dark equilibrium, and visible light irradiation led to 72 % TC and 80 % Cr(VI) degradation within 30 min. VB-XPS results confirmed the alignment of band edges, supporting an S-scheme charge transfer mechanism between the p-type CT and n-type CuMOF. TEM results reveled a well-formed p-n heterojunction, while EIS and photocurrent density measurements demonstrated enhanced charge carrier mobility and separation. Kinetic results followed pseudo-second order for TC and Cr(VI), with Langmuir adsorption isotherm showing maximum capacities of 25.36 mg/g for TC and 45.94 mg/g for Cr(VI). ESR and radical scavenger studies confirmed hydroxyl (•OH) and superoxide (•O 2 − ) radicals as key species in TC degradation, while superoxide played dominant roles in Cr(VI) reduction. CT@CuMOF composite exhibited favorable thermodynamic conditions (ΔG° <0), endothermic processes (ΔH° >0) and excellent reusability (80 % retention after five cycles). This research highlights the novelty of CT@CuMOF composite as a sustainable material for water purification.

Fabricating yolk–shell structured CoTiO3@Co3O4 nanoreactor via a simple self-template method toward high-performance peroxymonosulfate activation and organic pollutant degradation

Haitao Li,Qiang Gao,Guanshuai Wang,Bo Han,Kaisheng Xia,Chenggang Zhou

As one of the newly emerging heterogenous catalysts for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, complex hollow structured nanoreactors with multilevel interiors can significantly enhance the catalytic performance and manifest great potentiality in organic pollutant degradation. Herein, a novel yolk–shell structured CoTiO 3 @Co 3 O 4 nanoreactor was synthesized via a simple self-template method using amorphous TiO 2 nanospheres as template and CoCl 2 ·6H 2 O as cobalt source, respectively. Owing to the remarkable structural advantages and unique space confined effect, the as-synthesized CoTiO 3 @Co 3 O 4 nanoreactor exhibited a high efficiency for PMS activation, enabling 100% removal of rhodamine B (RhB; 50 mg L −1 ) in a short period of time, with a rate constant (0.1993 min −1 ) much higher relative to those of CoTiO 3 (0.0246 min −1 ) and Co 3 O 4 (0.0150 min −1 ). Moreover, this catalyst showed a low cobalt leaching (0.080 mg L −1 ) while keeping almost unchanged catalytic activity in the cyclic degradation processes. Based on ESR analysis and quenching experiments, the possible catalytic mechanism was proposed. The mineralization degree was found to be 79.5% in the RhB degradation process via TOC analysis. LC/MS was employed to identify the intermediates and corresponding degradation pathway was elucidated. Besides, CoTiO 3 @Co 3 O 4 nanoreactor was revealed to be also highly efficient in activating PMS for degradation of several other recalcitrant organic pollutants. This work may be suggestive to the design and synthesis of advanced complex hollow nanoreactors for environmental remediation.

Electrochemical In Situ Formation of a Stable Ti-Based Skeleton for Improved Li-Storage Properties: A Case Study of Porous CoTiO3 Nanofibers

Si-Yu Liu,Chao-Ying Fan,Han-Chi Wang,Jing-Ping Zhang,Xing-Long Wu

Graphical Anodes go bimetallic : On cycling of as-prepared 3D CoTiO 3 nanofibers, during the first lithiation process, along with the formation of a Li 2 O matrix, Ti IV and Co II species were converted/reduced to Li x TiO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) and metallic Co NPs, respectively, which suggested the electrochemical in situ formation of bimetallic transition-metal oxides (see figure). Bimetallic transition-metal oxides, which exhibit superior electrochemical properties compared with pristine single-metal oxides, have recently become a topic of significant research interest for applications in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, we report a simple and scalable electrospinning method to synthesize porous CoTiO 3 nanofibers as the precursor for nanostructured bimetallic transition-metal oxides formed electrochemically in situ. This strategy ensures uniform mixing and perfect contact between two constituent transition-metal oxides during the lithiation/delithiation process. Furthermore, CoTiO 3 nanofibers based on ultrafine CoTiO 3 nanocrystals are interconnected to form a nano/microstructured 3D network, which ensures the high stability of the in situ formed structure composed of bimetallic transition-metal oxides, and also fast ion/electron transfer and electrolyte penetration into the electrode. Electrochemical measurements revealed the excellent lithium storage (647 mAh g −1 at 0.1 Ag −1 ) and retention properties (600 mAh g −1 at 1 Ag −1 after 1200 cycles) of the CoO/TiO 2 electrode. Moreover, the electrochemical reaction mechanism was explored by using ex situ X-ray photoelectric spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry tests, which confirmed the two-phase reaction processes in the electrodes. These results clearly validate the potential of CoTiO 3 with a unique nano/microstructured morphology as the precursor for a bimetallic transition-metal oxide for use as the anode material for long-life LIBs.

Construction of CoTiO3/CdS catalysts in-situ grown on recyclable chitosan hydrogel beads and their application in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from water splitting

Meijuan Ding,Mei Li,Qingyang Yu,Ziyu Li,Jingyi Nie,Aohui Ping,Chaoqi Ding,Hongbo Li,Bing Yang,Zhiliang Jin

In the photocatalytic water-splitting hydrogen evolution reaction, synthesizing an electron-rich photocatalyst and achieving effective solid-liquid separation are of paramount importance. In this study, CoTiO 3 nanoparticles (CTO) were synthesized using a combination of hydrothermal and calcination methods. Hexagonal CdS (CS) was prepared via the urea-thermal method, and CTO/CS composites were successfully fabricated in a single step through a physical stirring technique. Following the preparation of chitosan hydrogel beads (CHB), they were modified by incorporating ε-polylysine to form CHBL catalysts with a particle diameter of 2 mm. In situ growth of CTO/CS composite materials was conducted while preparing CHBL and performing photocatalytic hydrogen evolution experiments with the newly prepared composite catalyst. The results indicate that the novel composite photocatalyst CTO/CS-15@CHBL has strong hydrogen evolution performance. Under a 10 W LED, the hydrogen evolution rate is 26.2 mmol‧g −1 ‧h −1 , and at a wavelength of 450 nm, the AQY was measured at 1.17 %. Meanwhile, after seven cycles of use (a total of 35 h), there was no significant decline in hydrogen evolution activity, demonstrating that CTO/CS-15@CHBL has good stability for hydrogen evolution. Based on DFT, XPS and KPFM characterization, it is proposed that a Z-scheme heterojunction is established between CTO and CS. The synthesis of CTO/CS-15@CHBL can effectively enhance reaction performance, helping to address issues such as difficulties in solid-liquid separation after the reaction. This research offers new insights into enhancing photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity and improving catalyst recovery.
