In this study, we investigated environmental oestrogen 17β-estradiol (E2) degradation by a mixed culture of Rhodococcus equi DSSKP-R-001(RS) and Comamonas testosteroni QYY20150409(CT). The results demonstrated that the two strains exhibited synergistic E2 degradation activity, showing that multispecies bacterial systems can improve microbial survival and activity. The E2 degradation rate for the mixed culture system was 94% under conditions in which E2 was the sole source of carbon and growth energy, while the degradation rates of the R. equi DSSKP-R-001 and C. testosteroni QYY20150409 single strains were 86% and 76%, respectively. Comparing and analyzing the degradation products of E2, intermediate cross-metabolism products were observed in the culture containing the two bacteria. The metabolic products of benzene were essentially removed during the process of E2 degradation in the mixed culture, which showed stronger degradation ability than cultures of the individual strains. The results from this investigation on the degradation of E2 by individual and mixed bacterial cultures provide a theoretical basis for the microbial remediation of environmental oestrogens.

Tetracycline antibiotics are widely used in veterinary medicine, human therapy and agriculture, and their presence in natural water raises environmental concerns. In this study, more than 94% of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) could be rapidly degraded within 48 h in polarity-inverted microbial fuel cells. The electrochemically active bacteria had the best electrochemical performance at 1 mg/L of TCH with the minimum internal resistance of 77.38 Ω. The electron-rich functional groups of TCH were continuously attacked and finally degradated into small molecules in three possible degradation pathways. Microbial community structure analysis showed that Comamonas and Shinella were enriched at the electrode as polarity-inverted bacteria. Genomic analysis showed that both direct and indirect electron transfer participated in the degradation of TCH in polarity-inverted microbial fuel cell ( MFC) and the functional genes related to electrical conductivity in polarity-inverted MFC were more enriched on the electrode surface than non-polarity-inverted MFC. This study can facilitate further investigations about the biodegradation of TCH in polarity-inverted microbial fuel cell.

Indole and phenol often coexist in the coking wastewater, while the effects of phenol on microbial communities of indole metabolism were less explored. In this study, the microbial interactions within activated sludge microbial communities stimulated by indole (group A) or by indole and phenol (group B) were systematically investigated in sequencing batch reactors (SBRs). The results showed that the removal of indole was increased by adding phenol. By using high-throughput sequencing technology, it was found that α-diversity was reduced in both groups. According to the relative abundance analysis, the indole-degrading genus Comamonas was the core genus in both groups (33.94% and 61.40%). But another indole-degrading genus Pseudomonas was only enriched in group A with 12.22% relative abundance. Meanwhile, common aromatic degrading genus Dyella and Thermomonas were enriched only in group B. It was found that the relative abundance of cytochrome P450 and styrene degradation enzymes were increased in group B by PICRUSt analysis. Based on the phylogenetic molecular ecological networks (pMENs), module hub OTU_1149 ( Burkholderia ) was only detected in group B, and the positive interactions between the key functional genus Burkholderia and other bacteria were increased. This study provides new insights into our understanding of indole metabolism communities stimulated by phenol, which would provide useful information for practical coking wastewater treatment.

The response of the denitrification community to long-term antibiotic exposure requires further investigation. Here, the significantly altered denitrifying community structure and function were observed by continuous exposure to 1 mg/L sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) or chlortetracycline (CTC) for 180 d in the expanded granular sludge bed reactors. Thaurea , positively correlated with SMZ and NO 3 − removal efficiency ( NrE ), was highly enriched in the SMZ-added reactor, while, Comamons and Acinetobacter were largely inhibited. The acute inhibited and then gradual-recovered NrE (87.17–90.38 %) was observed with highly expressed narG , indicating the adaptability of Thaurea to SMZ. However, the abundance of Thaurea and Comamonas greatly decreased, while Melioribacter and Acinetobacter were largely enriched in the CTC-added reactor. CTC created more serious and continuous inhibition of NO 3 − reduction ( NrE of 64.53–66.95 %), with lowly expressed narG . Improved NO 2 − reduction capacity was observed in both reactors (70.16–95.42 %) with highly expressed nirS and nosZ , revealing the adaptability of NO 2 − reduction populations to antibiotics.
