Ultrarapid and Deep Debromination of Tetrabromodiphenyl Ether over Noble-Metal-Free Cu/TiO2 Nanocomposites under Mild Conditions

Ming Lei,Shun Guo,Zhiying Wang,Lihua Zhu,Heqing Tang

Fast and deep debromination of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) under mild conditions is a challenge in the field of pollution control. A strategy was developed to achieve it by exploiting Cu/TiO2 composites as a noble-metal-free catalyst. Toward the debromination of 2,2′,4,4′-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE47) as a typical PBDE, the use of Cu/TiO2 as a catalyst and hydrazine hydrate (N2H4·H2O) as a reducing agent yielded a degradation removal of 100% and a debromination efficiency of 87.7% in 3 s. A complete debromination of BDE47 at 1500 mg L–1 was possible by successively adding N2H4·H2O. A debromination pathway involving active H atom species was proposed for the catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) of PBDEs according to the identified degradation intermediates. A mechanism was further clarified by density functional theory calculations: electrons are delivered from N2H4·H2O to the metallic Cu atom via a coordination of N in N2H4·H2O with Cu atoms. The electron-trapped Cu atom interacts with adsorbed BDE47 to form a transition complex, and then the debromination of this complex occurs on the surface of Cu nanoparticles due to the hydrogen donation of N2H4·H2O through the CTH process. The new method provides a highly efficient method to remove brominated pollutants.

The Cu/TiO2 adsorbent modified by Ce-doping removes trace phosphorus impurities from circular hydrogen of a polysilicon chemical vapor deposition furnace

Ze Luo,Qingxin Liang,Yuanshuai Qi,Guoqiang Huang

There is an urgent need for efficient and cost-effective adsorbents for the removal of trace hydrogen phosphide (PH 3 ) from the circular hydrogen systems in the polysilicon chemical vapor deposition furnaces. In this study, a straightforward and cost-effective method was used to synthesize a highly efficient adsorbent (Ce x -Cu y /TiO 2 ) for PH 3 removal using TiO 2 as the carrier and CuO as the active substance. Experimental findings demonstrated that optimal Ce doping amounts (n Cu :n Ce  = 20:1) markedly enhanced the adsorbent's performance, with an adsorption capacity reaching as high as 149.14 mg g −1 . Material characterization results indicated that Ce positively influenced the uniform dispersion of Cu on the TiO 2 surface, and Ce doping increased the adsorbed oxygen content of the adsorbent, consequently enhancing its oxidation performance. The investigation of the reaction mechanism and causes of adsorbent deactivation revealed that the depletion of active substances (CuO) in the adsorbent and the accumulation of products such as Cu 3 P and phosphates are the primary factors contributing to its deactivation. Furthermore, high-temperature calcination could restore the activity of the adsorbent, indicating its great potential for engineering applications.

A comparative study on the activity and adsorption of bimetallic MOF-derived Me-Cu/TiO2 (Me=Fe, Co, Ni) for low-temperature selective catalytic reduction of NO by CO

Yong Shi,Xin Lan Ma,Jin Suo Gao,Feng Yun Yu,Chun Yan Li,Wei Xiong,Li Ping Huang

The catalytic activity, adsorption and synergistic effect over bimetallic MOF derivatives with different dopant metal were systemically compared. A series of Me-Cu/TiO 2 (Me=Fe, Co, Ni) derived from bimetallic Me/Cu-BTC MOFs were fabricated via a sacrificing template method and applied for CO-SCR. Among the bimetallic catalysts, Fe-Cu/TiO 2 presented the best low-temperature of nearly 100% NO conversion from 150 °C to 350 °C with good NO selectivity. For Me-Cu/TiO 2 (Me=Fe, Co, Ni), the productions of crucial Cu + intermediate were determined to be 51.17%, 50.45%,49.4% by XPS, which were consistent with their catalytic activity results. The superior redox behavior of Fe-Cu/TiO 2 can be attributed to its higher Oβ / (Oα +Oβ) ratio of 32.90% and the higher Me 2+ / Me 3+ ratio of 1.79. In situ infrared analysis revealed that the Fe doping not only improved the formation and stability of nitrate species, but also enhanced the quantity of Lewis acid sites by forming Cu + -CO. Furthermore, a possible low-temperature Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) mechanism over Me-Cu /TiO 2 (Me=Fe, Co, Ni) was proposed.

Localized surface plasmon resonance effect enhanced Cu/TiO2 core–shell catalyst for boosting CO2 hydrogenation reaction

Lizi Shi,Huimin Liu,Shangbo Ning,Jinhua Ye

Photothermal catalysis is a promising strategy for converting CO2 into high value-added chemical feedstocks. Its current major challenges lie in improving CO2 conversion efficiency and product selectivity. In this work, a series of Cu/TiO2 core–shell catalysts were prepared using the hard template method. The Cu10/TiO2 catalyst exhibited excellent performance for the photothermal conversion of CO2 to CO in the presence of H2 under Xe lamp irradiation (CO2 conversion, 30.6%; CO selectivity, ∼100%; CO maximum yield, 87.1 mmol h−1 gcat−1). Results indicated that the Cu/TiO2 catalyst has a good photo-to-thermal conversion ability based on the significant LSPR effect, and the existence of hot electrons makes the reaction follow the carbonate pathway efficiently. This article successfully achieves efficient CO2 reduction under inexpensive and non-toxic conditions. In addition, it also provides unique insights into the study of the LSPR effect in the field of photothermal catalysis.

Visible-light-driven photocatalytic inactivation of bacteriophage f2 by Cu-TiO2 nanofibers in the presence of humic acid

Rong Cheng,Mi Kang,Zhi-peng Shen,Lei Shi,Xiang Zheng

Pathogenic viruses in drinking water are great threats to public health. Visible-light-driven photocatalysis is a promising technology for virus inactivation. However, the existing photocatalytic antiviral research studies have mostly been carried out in single-component systems, neglecting the effect of natural organic matter, which exists widely in actual water bodies. In this paper, electrospun Cu-TiO 2 nanofibers were prepared as photocatalysts, and their photocatalytic antiviral performance in the presence of humic acid (HA) was comprehensively studied for the first time. The properties of the reaction mixture were measured during the reaction. In addition, the safety, reliability and stability of photocatalytic disinfection in the mixed system were evaluated. The results showed that the virus removal efficiency decreased with the increase of the HA concentration. The type of reaction solution, such as PBS buffer solution or water, did not affect the removal efficiency noticeably. Under acidic conditions, the electrostatic forces between photocatalysts and viruses were strengthened, leading to higher virus removal efficiency. As the reaction time went on, the pH value in the solution increased first and then tended to be stable, the conductivity remained stable, and the dissolved oxygen increased first and then decreased. The safety test showed that the concentration of Cu ions released into the solution was lower than specified by the international standards. No photoreactivation was observed, and the addition of HA significantly reduced the reutilization efficiency of the photocatalysts.

The enhanced performance of Sb-modified Cu/TiO2 catalyst for selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3

Zhong-yi Wang,Rui-tang Guo,Xu Shi,Wei-guo Pan,Jian Liu,Xiao Sun,Shuai-wei Liu,Xing-yu Liu,Hao Qin

The Cu/TiO 2 catalysts modified by Sb were compounded through the sol-gel way and put into use for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx with NH 3 . Experimental results suggested that CuSb/TiO 2 -0.4 exhibited the excellent NOx conversion and SO 2 tolerance. Subsequently, the relationship between surface physicochemical properties and catalytic performance was also investigated by different characterization methods. From characterizations, the introduction of Sb for Cu/TiO 2 could promote the generation of more Cu 2+ , surface adsorbed oxygen species and surface acid sites on CuSb/TiO 2 -0.4 catalyst. Furthermore, Sb species on CuSb/TiO 2 -0.4 could contribute to the formation of more surface ad-NOx and ad-NH 3 species, which would enhance the NH 3 -SCR process effectively through both the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) and Eley-Rideal (E-R) mechanisms.

Engineering the coordination structure of Cu for enhanced photocatalytic production of C1 chemicals from glucose

Lulu Sun,Shiyang Liu,Taifeng Liu,Dongqiang Lei,Nengchao Luo,Feng Wang

ABSTRACT Photocatalytic decomposition of sugars is a promising way of providing H 2 , CO, and HCOOH as sustainable energy vectors. However, the production of C 1 chemicals requires the cleavage of robust C−C bonds in sugars with concurrent production of H 2 , which remains challenging. Here, the photocatalytic activity for glucose decomposition to HCOOH, CO (C 1 chemicals), and H 2 on Cu/TiO 2 was enhanced by nitrogen doping. Owing to nitrogen doping, atomically dispersed and stable Cu sites resistant to light irradiation are formed on Cu/TiO 2 . The electronic interaction between Cu and nitrogen ions originates valence band structure and defect levels composed of N 2 p orbit, distinct from undoped Cu/TiO 2 . Therefore, the lifetime of charge carriers is prolonged, resulting in the production of C 1 chemicals and H 2 with productivities 1.7 and 2.1 folds that of Cu/TiO 2 . This work provides a strategy to design coordinatively stable Cu ions for photocatalytic biomass conversion.

Novel integrating sphere structure solar photocatalytic reactor design: Efficient conversion of nitrate wastewater into high-value ammonia

Haiyang Xu,Le Zhang,Keqin Huang,Dingcheng Sun,Xuan Tong,Xitong Li,Yue Yang,Xu Ji

Solar photocatalytic nitrate technology represents a promising, eco-friendly approach with wide application potential. However, in practical applications, non-concentrated photocatalytic reactors often suffer from low surface solar energy flow density and significant optical losses due to material reflection. To address these issues, this paper proposes a photocatalytic reactor with an integral sphere structure, designed to enhance solar energy flow density during the photocatalytic process and minimize light loss caused by photocatalyst reflection. This study evaluated the optical performance of this structure and found that the optical losses at standard and 10° incident angles are 34.13 % and 34.64 %, respectively, which meet the design requirements. The successful loading of Cu 2+ enhances the responsiveness of Cu-TiO2 to ultraviolet and visible light. In practical environments, the total ammonia production after 3 h, 4 h, and 5 h of reaction under concentration condition were 175.42 μg, 251.15 μg, and 280.28 μg. In addition, through testing in non-concentration mode under the same irradiance, the total ammonia production was 82.66 μg, 90.35 μg, and 101.22 μg, respectively. Compared with non-concentration conditions, the total ammonia production of the system increased by 113.2 %, 177.9 %, and 176.62 %, respectively. These findings underscore the potential of the integral sphere photocatalytic reactor for practical environmental treatment applications.

Sulfite-assisted oxidation/adsorption coupled with a TiO2 supported CuO composite for rapid arsenic removal: Performance and mechanistic studies

Wei Ding,Xinyuan Wan,Huaili Zheng,Yuyang Wu,Salam Muhammad

Owing to the lower toxicity and mobility of inorganic As(V), the oxidative removal of As(III) is deemed as the optimal approach for arsenic elimination from water. Herein, a synthetic TiO 2 -supported CuO material (Cu-TiO 2 ) was coupled with sulfite (S(IV)) to remove As(III) at neutral pH. The combined process coupled oxidation with adsorption (i.e., As(III) removal by Cu-TiO 2 /S(IV)) was superior than a divided preoxidation-adsorption process (i.e., As(V) removal by Cu-TiO 2 ) for arsenic removal. Attractively, low concentration of As(III) (50−300 μg L −1 ) could be completely removed by Cu-TiO 2 (0.25 g L −1 )/S(IV) (0.5 mM) within 60 min. Mechanism investigations revealed that the efficient As(III) removal was attributed to the continuous oxysulfur radicals (SO x •− ) oxidation and Cu-TiO 2 adsorption. The surface-adsorbed and free sulfate radicals (SO 4 •− ) were further identified as the crucial oxidizing species. The Cu-TiO 2 played the dual roles as a catalyst for S(IV) activation and an absorbent for arsenic immobility. The influence of operating parameters (i.e., As(III) concentration and sulfite dosage) and water chemistry (i.e., pH, inorganic anions, dissolved organic matters , and temperature) on As(III) removal were systematically investigated and optimized. Overall, the proposed process has potential application prospects in rehabilitating the As(III)-polluted water environment using industrial waste sulfite.

New insights on the enhanced non-hydroxyl radical contribution under copper promoted TiO2/GO for the photodegradation of tetracycline hydrochloride

Sijia Qian,Shengyan Pu,Ying Zhang,Peng Wang,Yingchen Bai,Bo Lai

TiO 2 /graphene oxide (GO) as photocatalyst in the photo-degradation of multitudinous pollutants has been extensively studied. But its low photocatalytic efficiency is attributed to the high band gap energy which lead to low light utilization. Cu-TiO 2 /GO was synthesized via the impregnation methods to enhance the catalytic performance. The Cu-TiO 2 /GO reaction rate constant for photo-degradation of pollutants (tetracycline hydrochloride, TC) was about 1.4 times that of TiO 2 /GO. In 90 min, the removal ratio of Cu-TiO 2 /GO for TC was 98%, and the maximum degradation ratio occurred at pH 5. After five cycles, the removal ratio of Cu-TiO 2 /GO still exceeded 98%. UV–visible adsorption spectra of Cu-TiO 2 /GO showed that its band gap was narrower than TiO 2 /GO. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra test illustrated the generation rate of •O 2 − and •OH was higher in Cu-TiO 2 /GO system than TiO 2 /GO and TiO 2 system. The contribution sequence of oxidative species was •O 2 − > holes (h + ) > •OH in both TiO 2 /GO and Cu-TiO 2 /GO system. Interestingly, the contribution of •OH in Cu-TiO 2 /GO was less than that in TiO 2 /GO during the photo-degradation process. This phenomenon was attributed to the better adsorption performance of Cu-TiO 2 /GO which could reduce the accessibility of TC to •OH in liquid. The enhanced non‑hydroxyl radical contribution could be attributed to that the more other active species or sites on (nearby) the surface of Cu-TiO 2 /GO generated after doping Cu. These results provide a new perspective for the tradition metal-doped conventional catalysts to enhance the removal of organic pollutants in the environment.

Platinum−Copper Bimetallic Nanoparticles Supported on TiO2 as Catalysts for Photo−thermal Catalytic Toluene Combustion

Yuan Qi,Zhengyi Yang,Yanyan Jiang,Hecheng Han,Tao Wu,Lili Wu,Jiurong Liu,Zhou Wang,Fenglong Wang

Oxidation of toluene into CO2 and H2O under mild conditions via a photo-promoted catalytic process has been regarded as a promising tactic to solve the toluene pollution issues in air. In this work, we examined the performance of Pt–Cu/TiO2 nanocatalysts with tunable mass ratios between Pt and Cu elements for photocatalytic, thermocatalytic, and photo–thermal catalytic degradation of toluene. In the photo–thermal catalytic process, 80% of the inlet toluene could be decomposed over Pt0.4 wt %Cu0.1 wt %–TiO2 catalyst at 77 °C under light irradiation, while 100 °C was needed for Pt0.5 wt %–TiO2 to achieve the same catalytic efficiency. The greatly enhanced activity could be ascribed to the synergistic effects arising from photothermal effects of the high dispersion of PtCu alloy nanoparticles, intimate interaction between the metal elements, and the photoexcitation of TiO2. In the photocatalytic process, the highest photocatalytic toluene conversion rate was obtained on the PT-4 catalyst (55%) and there was a negligible conversion rate (0.38%) of toluene under thermocatalytic conditions at 110 °C, delineating that the efficiency of photo–thermal catalytic degradation of toluene was much higher than that of a thermocatalytic or a photocatalytic process, illustrating the synergistic effects between light irradiation and heat. This work highlights the high photo–thermal catalytic toluene degradation performance of PtCu alloy nanoparticles and the synergistic effects of light irradiation and heat.

MOF‐Derived Cu‐TiO2/Alginate Micromotors for Buoyancy‐Regulated 3D Motion

Wei Zou,Qing Wu,Jiawei Lin,Kunchen Li,Yulong Ying,Josep Puigmartí‐Luis,Salvador Pané,Sheng Wang

Micro‐ and nanomotors (MNMs) promise impact in the areas of environmental remediation and biomedicine, but reliable three‐dimensional (3D) control remains challenging. Conventional bubble‐propelled MNMs can move in 3D, yet their trajectories are stochastic and energy‐inefficient. Here we introduce a buoyancy‐regulated strategy inspired by cyanobacteria‐like microvesicles. We engineer sodium‐alginate (SA)hydrogel magnetic micromotors (SA/Cu‐TiO 2 /Fe 3 O 4 ), in which Cu‐TiO 2 is derived from the Ti‐based metal–organic framework MIL‐125(Ti v ), yielding a porous and defect‐rich photocatalyst with uniformly distributed Cu sites for enhanced H 2 O 2 decomposition and photocatalytic activity compared with pristine TiO 2 . Upon illumination, Cu‐TiO 2 catalyzes H 2 O 2 decomposition to generate O 2 pockets that are retained within the elastic, semipermeable alginate matrix, enabling programmable flotation and precise control of vertical ( Z ‐axis) position as part of full 3D navigation. We analyze the energetics and cross‐scale mass‐transport mechanisms governing this buoyancy control, and we demonstrate guided 3D motion through a maze via magnetic steering. In model turbid water, the micromotors achieve high removal performance across diverse organic contaminants. This bioinspired platform provides a prototype and motion‐control paradigm for 3D‐motile MNMs, advancing practical remediation in aquatic environments. In this work, cyanobacteria‐inspired sodium alginate (SA)/Cu‐TiO 2 /Fe 3 O 4 hydrogel micromotors generate and encapsulate O 2 microvesicles upon light irradiation, enabling buoyancy‐mediated Z ‐axis upward migration and surface enrichment at the light‐exposed water‐air surface. The synergistic combination of intensified light harvesting, efficient transmembrane pollutant diffusion, and concurrent photocatalytic/Fenton‐like reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation endows the micromotors with outstanding degradation capacity toward various organic pollutants, paving a feasible pathway for practical remediation of turbid, complicated wastewater systems.
