Enhanced proton conductivity in a Cu-BTC thin-film membrane through lysine incorporation and a mixed matrix membrane

Yuan Gao,Bo Liu,Hanlu Xu,Caixia Shi,Ning Yan,Shaorong Wang,Rongli Jiang

To meet the growing demand for clean and sustainable energy, the development of high-performance proton conductive materials is crucial for practical applications in PEMFCs. However, the current materials suffer from issues such as low conductivity, poor durability, and unclear structure–activity relationship. To address these challenges, we investigate the proton conductivity properties of lysine-decorated Cu-BTC (where BTC is benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate) and its corresponding thin-film membrane. We explore the impact of lysine (Lys) content (10 wt%, 20 wt%, 30 wt%, and 40 wt%) on the proton conductivity performance under varying humidity and temperature conditions. Our findings show that Cu-BTC-Lys (40 wt%) exhibits the best conductivity of 1.2 × 10−3 S cm−1 at 80 °C under 100% relative humidity (RH), aided by an activation energy (Ea) of 0.25 eV facilitating proton transfer through hydrogen-bonding networks via the Grotthuss mechanism. We then create a proton conductive membrane by fabricating Cu-BTC-Lys (40 wt%) with the PVP/PVDF polymeric matrix. The resulting Cu-BTC-Lys@PVP/PVDF-20 membrane shows a significantly improved conductivity of 4.8 × 10−3 S cm−1 at 80 °C under 100% RH, along with a decreasing Ea value of 0.15 eV. The membrane retains its rich hydrogen-bonding networks and excellent performance durability for up to 5 days, making it an ideal candidate for real-life applications.

Ability evaluation of thiophenic sulfurs capture with a novel (MOF-818)-on-(Cu-BTC) composite in the presence of moisture

Xiuxuan Fang,Yingzhi Zhu,Haotian Dong,Na Ma,Wei Dai

In view of unstable Cu-BTC could be destroyed by water molecules, causing a significantly performance decrease of adsorptive desulfurization, a (MOF-818)-on-(Cu-BTC) composite was innovatively designed and synthesized to achieve win-win for enhancing abilities of water-stability and desulfurization in this work. We approved that the novel (MOF-818)-on-(Cu-BTC) desulfurizer was achieved through nitrogen adsorption-desorption, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), etc. Thiophene (Th), benzothiophene (BT), and dibenzothiophene (DBT) capture performances from different simulated fuels in presence of moisture were systematic evaluated by means of batch tests. Further investigations demonstrated that the (MOF-818)-on-(Cu-BTC) exhibited remarkably sulfur capture ability, attributing to associative effects of specific surface area, nanopores , and acid-base interaction. Importantly, this (MOF-818)-on-(Cu-BTC) impressively retained sulfur capacity and its structural integrity even soaked in water for 7 days. Water-resistant ability was accordance with the order: (MOF-818)-on-(Cu-BTC)>MOF-818>Cu-BTC. This novel work would provide a new idea for adsorptive desulfurization by MOF-on-MOF in the presence of water environment.

Synthesis of Cu-BTC/Mt composites porous materials and their performance in adsorptive desulfurization process

Fabien Habimana,Da Shi,Shengfu Ji

This paper highlights the synthesis of Cu-BTC supported on Montmorillonite (Mt) to form Cu-BTC/Mt composite materials and examines their important role in adsorptive desulfurization process of fuel liquids . Cu-BTC/Mt composites were synthesized by solvothermal synthesis using varying Cu-BTC content (30%, 40% and 50%) and a well-known and constant amount of montmorillonite was used as support. The synthesized composites were then characterized using XRD , FT-IR, TEM and BET techniques. The adsorptive desulfurization performance of the as-prepared composite materials was investigated and their ability to remove thiophene from thiophene/ n -octane model oil was studied under mild operating conditions namely: temperature near room temperature, atmospheric pressure and at different model oil/adsorbent mass ratio. Investigation results have shown that the 40%Cu-BTC/Mt composite sample has the best desulfurization performance for thiophene removal. After 6   h of desulfurization, under the reaction conditions of temperature of 30   °C and at a model oil/adsorbent mass ratio of 100:1, the percentage of sulfur removal was 76% while the adsorption desulfurization capacity reached 28.95   mgS/gMOF. The 40%Cu-BTC/Mt composite sample could be reused for at least five consecutive rounds. The adsorption kinetics fit well both the pseudo-first order rate equation and pseudo-second order rate equation models.

Improved photocatalytic degradation of malachite green with a novel composite β-bihydroxycobalt phthalocyanine/Cu-BTC

Yanbing Yin,Hang Yang,Zhaosong Xin,Guopeng Xu,Yang Liu,Guohua Dong,Jie Ma

In this work, a novel MOF (metal organic framework) based composite of β-BCoPc/Cu-BTC is fabricated by immobilizing β-aryloxy phthalocyanine cobalt (β-BCoPc) on Cu-BTC (benzenetricarboxylic acid-Cu) via a facile impregnation approach. After a systematic characterization via X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and N 2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, the above-synthesized catalyst is for the first time applied to photocatalytically decompose refractory malachite green (MG) dye pollutant under UV light irradiation. In comparison with that of the β-BCoPc or Cu-BTC monomers, the synthesized β-BCoPc/Cu-BTC composite shows a significantly enhanced photocatalytic degradation performance of MG with a best degradation efficiency up to 90.12 %, which can easily be attributed to the synergistic effect between the Cu-BTC and β-BCoPc effectively improving light utilization efficiency, accelerating charge transportation and reducing charge recombination due to the desirable properties such as the conjugacy of the MOFs skeleton, the positive catalytic activity of central ion and large specific surface area, etc. In conclusion, the present work provides an effective and novel strategy via preparing MOF-based composite catalyst to realize the photocatalytic degradation of MG.

Fabrication of Cu-BTC metal organic frameworks on PVDF hollow fiber membrane for gas separation via multiple reactions

Chen Yingbo,Wang Biao,Zhang Shifeng,Hu Xiaoyu,Cheng Bowen,Liu Dongqing,Zhang Yufeng

Cu-BTC/PVDF composite membranes were prepared by immersing PVDF hollow fiber supporting membranes into copper acetate aqueous solution and trimesic acid ethanol solution repeatedly. Surface and cross sectional morphologies of Cu-BTC crystals on the supporting PVDF membrane were investigated using SEM. Chemical composition and crystal structure of Cu-BTC were characterized by IR and XRD. Gas permeance and separation factor for CO 2 and N 2 of the Cu- BTC/PVDF composite membrane were recorded under different pressures. The results illustrated that with increasing reaction times, the crystal layer became more in density and less in defects, resulting in decrease of gas permeance and the separation mechanism changing from convective flow to Knusen diffusion.

Composition Design of Ni-Nano-Cu-BTC@Ag Coatings with Low Friction and Their Intelligent Electrical Control Behavior

Yuyun Wang,Guoliang Zhang,Duo Yang,Yang Li,Wei Yin,Jingshui Xu

At present, Ni-based coatings are rarely used in the field of voltage control friction because of their poor antifriction, wear resistance, and conductive properties. Therefore, in this paper, Cu-BTC@Ag nanocrystals were used to enhance the nickel coatings, and the effect of voltage on their tribological properties was also investigated. It was found that the grains of coating were refined via the addition of Cu-BTC@Ag nanocrystals, leading to an improvement in the hardness and corrosion resistance of this composite coating. The tribological performance of nickel composite coating could be controlled under different electrical fields. With the comparison of the pure Ni-based coating, the average friction coefficient and wear volume of its composite coating with 5 wt % Cu-BTC@Ag were reduced by 7.0 and 91.8%, respectively, which showed excellent wear resistance without an applied voltage. Under the condition of 20 V, the 5 wt % Cu-BTC@Ag/Ni-based composite coating owned outstanding antifriction performance. Therefore, Cu-BTC@Ag played an intelligent role in regulating the friction of Ni-based coatings under an external voltage. It is due to the accumulation of Cu-BTC@Ag nanocrystals on the surface of the coating under the action of voltage, which played the role of supporting load and effectively reducing wear.

Graphene modified Cu-BTC with high stability in water and controllable selective adsorption of various gases

Yunfei Sun,Min Ma,Bo Tang,Sen Li,Li Jiang,Xiaohong Sun,Miaoling Que,Chongben Tao,Zhengtian Wu

The copper-benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (Cu-BTC) attracts increasing attention because of its large BET surface area available for the adsorption of gases. However, low stability in water creates a barrier for its potential applications. In this study, graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) are adopted to modify the Cu-BTC. The influence of GO and RGO on the resulting BET surface area, pore diameter distribution, morphology and yield of the Cu-BTC are revealed. It is found that the adsorption abilities of the resulting composites for the polar and nonpolar gas molecules are closely related to the presence at surface of the functional groups of the used graphene samples, which provides a potential method to achieve selective adsorption. Furthermore, the preparation processes of the GO/Cu-BTC and RGO/Cu-BTC exert a significant effect on the performances of the resulting product, which is also studied in detail.

Enhanced carbon dioxide absorption capacity of Cu-BTC through the combination of Cu-g-C3N4 at room temperature

Zhu Jiantao,Wen He,Han Wei,Ma Jiantai,Zhang Feng,Liu Chaowei

The growing concern about the environmental consequences of anthropogenic CO 2 emissions significantly stimulated the research of low-cost, efficient, and recyclable solid adsorbents of CO 2 capture. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are a promising porous material for CO 2 adsorption. Hybrid materials consisting in copper benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (Cu-BTC) and Cu doped graphitic-carbon nitride (Cu-g-C 3 N 4 ) were prepared through solvothermal method as CO 2 adsorbent. The size range of Cu-BTC@1.8%Cu-g-C 3 N 4 was 9.0 ~ 19.4 μm, which was lower than the size range of Cu-BTC (14.6 ~ 29.6 μm). The hybrid adsorbents had lower Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface areas and pole volume due to the combination with Cu-g-C 3 N 4 . The CO 2 adsorption capacity of Cu-BTC@1.8%Cu-g-C 3 N 4 increased by 49.5% compared with that of pure Cu-BTC because of more adsorption sites including unsaturated metal centers and N atoms. Moreover, the Cu-BTC@1.8%Cu-g-C 3 N 4 had good stability in CO 2 adsorption capacity after multiple adsorption cycles. Graphical abstract

One-pot preparation of carboxymethyl cellulose-based multifunctional active film embedded with Cu-BTC (benzenetricarboxylic acid) metal-organic framework for mango preservation

Kaibo Yu,Lei Zhou,Shengfeng Peng,Yuqing Tian,Hairong Huang,Xiaowei Chen,Wei Zhou,Liqiang Zou,Wei Liu

Cu-BTC (benzenetricarboxylic acid) is a commercially safe metal-organic framework, but its use in constructing active films is hindered by water instability, uniformity of dispersion and multistep preparation processes. In the study, a carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-based multifunctional active film embedded with Cu-BTC was prepared and characterized to preserve mangoes. The small and uniform Cu-BTC crystals (1.25 μm) with water-resistant performance can be produced by adding polyvinylpyrrolidone. The microstructure results showed that this film was innovatively one-step preparation based on CMC matrix, water-resistant Cu-BTC and emulsion system. In the process, Cu-BTC adsorbing cinnamon essential oil (CEO) and liquid paraffin as oil phase was stabilized with CMC aqueous phase by emulsifier Tween 80. Compared with traditional emulsion films (CMC/CEO), this film improved loading capacity of CEO by 4.62 times. The release rates of CEO in the film increased from 17.6 % to 74.8 % with moisture increasing from 10 % to 40 % in ethanol aqueous solutions. Compared with pure CMC film, this film decreased water vapor permeability by approximately 55.0 % and increased water contact angle from 70.6° to 95.6°. In addition, this film possessed applicable water solubility (71.7 %), moderate oxygen permeability and enhanced UV–visible barrier. Cu-BTC and CEO endowed ethylene adsorption properties and antibacterial activity. Furthermore, the film decreased water loss by 23.2 %, increased firmness by 103.1 % and maintained overall quality of fresh mangoes for 12 d at 25 °C. Therefore, the multifunctional Cu-BTC active film was readily produced and is promising to preserve perishable mangoes.

Immobilization of Lipase in Cu-BTC MOF with Enhanced Catalytic Performance for Resolution of N-hydroxymethyl Vince Lactam

Cheng Qiaojuan,Chi Xinyu,Liang Yingchao,Li Wanxin,Sun Jiaxin,Tao Jin,Wang Zhi

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) can be used as the immobilization carriers to protect the physicochemical properties of enzymes and improve their catalytic performance. Herein, we report an in situ co-precipitation method to immobilize lipase from Candida sp. 99–125 in Cu-BTC MOF (BTC = 1, 3, 5-benzene tricarboxylic acid, H 3 BTC). Characterizations of the immobilized lipase (lipase@Cu-BTC) have confirmed the entrapment of lipase molecules in Cu-BTC MOF. The immobilized lipase has been successfully applied for resolving N- hydroxymethyl vince lactam ( N -HMVL) and its catalytic activity is five times that of native enzyme. More importantly, we found that Cu-BTC MOF can afford powerful protection for enzyme in nearly dry organic solvent and endow the immobilized lipase with excellent reusability and storage stability. Our present study may widen the application of immobilized enzyme with MOF as the immobilized carrier. Graphical Abstract

Endowing Cu-BTC with Improved Hydrothermal Stability and Catalytic Activity: Hybridization with Natural Clay Attapulgite via Vapor-Induced Crystallization

Xiao-Yan Xie,Xin-Yu Qian,Shi-Chao Qi,Ju-Kang Wu,Xiao-Qin Liu,Lin-Bing Sun

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have drawn much attention for their highly promising applications, but the applications are often obstructed by the congenitally hydrothermal instability of the MOFs. Hybridizing the MOFs with other materials has been proved to be effective to solve the hydrothermal problems. Herein, a vapor-induced crystallization (VIC) method is employed for the first time to fabricate the hybrid MOFs based on the Cu-BTC and the natural clay attapulgite (NCA). Compared with the traditional solvothermal method for the hybridization, the VIC one has the obvious advantages of both reducing the solvent consumption and inducing the crystals self-repairing to generate perfect crystals of the hybrid MOFs. With an appropriate content of the NCA, the hybrid MOFs are proved to be highly stable even undergoing the hot water vapor (90 °C) for 12 h. The hybrid MOFs also exhibit the improved catalytic activity in catalyzing the styrene oxide ring-opening. The molar conversion of the styrene oxide over the hybrid MOF reaches 93.8% within 20 min, even higher than that of the unadulterated Cu-BTC (68.0%). These results indicate the promising application of the hybrid MOFs as the hydrothermal-stable and highly active heterogeneous catalysts.

Hydrogen adsorption performance of Cu-BTC/graphene aerogel composite: A combined experimental and computational study

Wen Ren,Xudong Zhuang,Zhilu Liu,Song Li

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are reported as potential hydrogen storage materials due to ultrahigh surface area and pore volume . However, most top-performing MOFs for hydrogen storage require strict synthesis conditions and high cost, which limits their wide applications. In this work, Cu-BTC/graphene aerogel (GA) composite is prepared at room temperature with improved hydrogen uptake at 100 bar compared with pristine Cu-BTC. To understand the mechanism of the enhanced hydrogen uptakes in the composite, grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulation is executed for Cu-BTC/GA composites with different numbers of graphene oxide (GO) layers. It is demonstrated that the increased hydrogen uptake in Cu-BTC/GA composites is mainly ascribed to the hydrogen uptake in the interface region between Cu-BTC and GA. Additionally, the hydrogen uptake of the Cu-BTC/GA composites decreases as the number of GO layers increases, implicating that fewer GO layers or thinner GA is favorable for hydrogen adsorption of Cu-BTC/GA composites.
