Porous (Cu,Ni)/Cu2O heterostructure-induced destabilization of LiBH4 for reversible hydrogen storage

Wang Fan,Geng Mingxiang,Bao Anyang,Lü Yujie,Huang Pengru,Liu Dongming

LiBH 4 , a solid-state hydrogen storage material with ultra-high theoretical hydrogen capacity, is seriously hindered for the practical applications by its high thermodynamic stability and slow hydrogen desorption kinetics. Herein, the dehydrogenation properties of LiBH 4 are remarkably improved by confinement in the porous (Cu,Ni)/Cu 2 O heterostructure (np-(Cu,Ni)/Cu 2 O), which was achieved using a novel two-step method containing dealloying of Mg–Cu–Ni precursor alloy to form the porous (Cu,Ni) solid solution, followed by micro-oxidation under air conditions. Hydrogen release from the constructed LiBH 4 @np-(Cu,Ni)/Cu 2 O (1:2, mass ratio) system begins at approximately 80°C and ends before 380°C, with 12.5wt% of hydrogen desorbed. Moreover, the apparent dehydrogenation activation energy has been reduced to 44.2 kJ/mol. After rehydrogenation at 400°C under 8 MPa hydrogen pressure, the LiBH 4 @np-(Cu,Ni)/Cu 2 O (1:2, mass ratio) system can release 3.6wt% of hydrogen during the second dehydrogenation process. These findings show that the synergistic effect of confinement and heterostructure catalysis provided by the porous metal derivatives can greatly enhance the hydrogen storage properties of LiBH 4 .

Facile synthesis of Cu/Ni alloy nanospheres with tunable size and elemental ratio

Jinglei Liu,Yiqun Zheng,Shifeng Hou

We report a facile synthesis of copper/nickel (Cu/Ni) alloy nanospheres in high purity and with tunable, well-controlled sizes and elemental ratios. The success of this synthesis relies on the use of one-pot, direct thermal reduction of a Cu and Ni precursor mixture in the presence of trioctylphosphine (TOP) and oleylamine (OAm) at an elevated temperature to form Cu/Ni alloy nanoparticles with a spherical shape and uniform size. Their sizes could be readily tuned in the range of 6.9–27.3 nm by simply varying the volume of TOP added to the reaction solution. The elemental ratio of Cu to Ni in resultant products was found to remain the same as that in the precursor, which offers a simple way to manipulate the composition of Cu/Ni alloy nanospheres. We also tested the catalytic performance of as-prepared Cu/Ni alloy nanospheres and evaluate the effect of size and elemental ratio using the reduction of 4-nitrophenol as the model reaction. The current strategy enables the size and composition controlled synthesis of Cu/Ni alloy nanomaterials and could find important use in the fabrication of other types of bimetallic alloy nanomaterials with desired sizes and compositions for catalytic purposes.

Selective hydrodeoxygenation of lignin to 4-ethylcyclohexanol catalyzed by Cu–Ni/MgCrOx spinel

Lixia Li,Zhechao Huang,Menghao Jiang,Jinxing Long

A novel approach is proposed for producing 4-ethylcyclohexanol, a versatile petrochemical in the polymer industry, from the renewable lignin in the presence of Cu–Ni/MgCrO x spinel catalysts. Under the synergistic effect between the Ni 0 , Cu, + and the balanced acidic and basic properties of MgO and MgCr 2 O 4 , an exceptional yield of monomer (30.1 wt%) with 59.5% selectivity of 4-ethylcyclohexanol (yield of 17.9 wt%) was achieved when the depolymerization of bamboo lignin was performed with Cu 6 Ni 20 /MgCr 0.5 O x (Cr:Mg = 0.5). Catalyst characterization illustrated that the formation of MgCr 2 O 4 spinel, which restrained the generation of NiMgO 2 solid solution and increased the concentration of Ni 0 species, along with the surface electron effect between Ni 0 and Cu + , contributes to this superior hydrodeoxygenation performance of lignin. Mechanistic investigation further demonstrated that the conversion of lignin to 4-ethylcyclohexanol involves a tandem process of C β –O bonds cleavage, demethoxylation, and saturated hydrogenation. Therefore, this work provides new insights on lignin utilization.

Synthesis of Cu/Ni-La0.7Sr0.3Cr0.5Mn0.5O3–δ and its catalytic performance on dry methane reforming

Dingwen Kang,Jie Yu,Wenhui Ma,Min Zheng,Yunfei He,Pengfei Li

In this study, Cu/Ni-La 0.7 Sr 0.3 Cr 0.5 Mn 0.5 O 3– δ (LSCM) catalysts were synthesized via the citric acid-nitrate process (CNP) and chemical co-precipitation. The catalytic performance of Cu/Ni-LSCM catalysts on dry methane reforming was evaluated in a fixed-bed reactor at 550/650 °C and atmosphere pressure. Cu/Ni loading was investigated as an influencing factor, which led to 5 cases of samples according to the different Cu/Ni mass ratios. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission-scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) measurement, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), hydrogen-based temperature-programmed reduction (H 2 -TPR) and thermos gravimetric analyzer (TGA). The results show that the methane conversion increases, the resistance against metal sintering increases and the carbon deposition drops after the copper is introduced. This optimum performance can be obtained under Case 3 (Cu:Ni:LSCM = 1:3:6 in mass ratio).

Catalytic in-Situ Hydrogenation of Furfural over Bimetallic Cu–Ni Alloy Catalysts in Isopropanol

Zihao Zhang,Zehua Pei,Hao Chen,Kequan Chen,Zhaoyin Hou,Xiuyang Lu,Pingkai Ouyang,Jie Fu

Al2O3-supported Cu and Ni monometallic as well as Cu–Ni bimetallic catalysts were synthesized using a coprecipitation method and studied for the in-situ hydrogenation of furfural (FAL) with isopropanol as the solvent and hydrogen donor. The Cu–Ni bimetallic catalysts showed improved activity toward the production of 2-methylfuran (2-MF) and 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (2-MTHF) over that of monometallic catalysts. The results indicated that isopropanol exhibited better performance than methanol for the in-situ hydrogenation of FAL to produce 2-MF and 2-MTHF under the same conditions. The reaction conditions such as the copper–nickel ratios, catalyst loading amount, reaction temperature, and time were optimized. After the reaction was complete, the supported Cu–Ni bimetallic catalyst could be reused four times without a significant loss in catalytic activity.

Alloy-Mediated Ultra-Low CO Selectivity for Steam Reforming over Cu−Ni Bimetallic Catalysts

Kui Ma,Zhonghui Cui,Zhitao Zhang,Jingjing Huang,Zhirui Sun,Ye Tian,Tong Ding,Xingang Li

Graphical Blowing off steam : This paper describes a new approach of designing Cu−Ni bimetallic catalytic systems for dimethyl ether/methanol steam reforming. The Cu−Ni system exhibits an interesting alloy-mediated selectivity of CO and CH 4 , thereby producing hydrogen-rich reformates with an ultra-low CO concentration (<1000 ppm), which could be commercially potential for fuel cells. Steam reforming of simple oxygenated hydrocarbons without C−C bonds is suitable for small-scale decentralized H 2 production for fuel cells. However, the relatively high CO concentration in H 2 -rich reformates produced by traditional Cu-based catalysts will poison the Pt-based anode in fuel cells. Here, we describe a new approach to the design of Cu−Ni bimetallic catalysts based on nickel-phyllosilicate for steam reforming of dimethyl ether (DME). With the tunable formation of the Cu−Ni alloy, we can modulate the selectivity of CO and CH 4 in steam reforming and achieve H 2 -rich reformates with an ultra-low concentration of CO (below 1000 ppm). This process only requires simple and low-energy purification pretreatments to meet the requirements of commercial fuel cells. Mechanistic studies reveal that the Cu−Ni alloy can adsorb CO, particularly at high temperatures, and simultaneously suppress CO dissociation to methane.

Super-light Cu@Ni nanowires/graphene oxide composites for significantly enhanced microwave absorption performance

Wang Xiaoxia,Zhang Baoqin,Zhang Wei,Yu Mingxun,Cui Liang,Cao Xueying,Liu Jingquan

Graphene oxide (GO) was rarely used as microwave absorption (MA) material due to its lower dielectric loss compared with reduced GO (RGO). However, the characteristics of low conductivity, light weight, and large surface area were beneficial to the impedance matching for absorbers already containing highly conductive metal materials. Cu@Ni nanowires are promising MA materials due to the desired dielectric loss from copper and excellent magnetic loss from nickel. However, the high density was an impediment to its further application. Combining Cu@Ni nanowires with GO should be an effective solution to decrease the absorber’s density and improve its MA properties. Herein, we demonstrated that Cu@Ni nanowires/GO composites exhibited enhanced MA capacities compared with Cu@Ni nanowires or GO alone, and the minimum reflection loss reached −42.8 dB at 16.9 GHz with a thickness of 2.1 mm. The enhanced MA performance mainly originated from good impedance matching, as a result of the addition of low conductivity of GO. To confirm this point, the MA performance of Cu@Ni nanowires/RGO was studied, and unsurprisingly, weak MA performance was obtained. Our work provides a new strategy to decrease the density, broaden the frequency band and tune MA performance of composites.

Enhanced nitrate reduction to ammonia using Cu-Ni catalyst: Synergistic mechanisms and reaction pathways

Yansen Qu,Xin Li,Yingjie Xia,Haosheng Lan,Le Ding,Jing Zhong,Xinghua Chang

Accelerated industrialization combined with over-applied nitrogen fertilizers results in serious nitrate pollution in surface and ground water, disrupting the balance of the global nitrogen cycle. Electrochemical nitrate reduction (eNO 3 RR) emerges as an attractive strategy to simultaneously enable nitrate removal and decentralized ammonia fabrication, restoring the globally perturbed nitrogen cycle. However, complex deoxygenation-hydrogenation processes and sluggish proton-electron transfer kinetics significantly hinder practical application of eNO 3 RR. In this study, we developed carbon-coated Cu-Ni bimetallic catalysts derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to facilitate eNO 3 RR. The unique structural features of catalyst promote enhanced synergy between Cu and Ni, effectively addressing critical challenges in nitrate reduction. Comprehensive structural and electrochemical analysis demonstrate that electrochemical nitrate-to-nitrite conversion mainly takes place on active Cu sites, the introduction of Ni could efficiently accelerate the generation of aquatic active hydrogen, promoting the hydrogenation of oxynitrides during eNO 3 RR. In addition, Ni introduction could push up the d-band center of the catalyst, thus enhancing the adsorption and activation of nitrate and the corresponding intermediates. Detailed reaction pathways for nitrate-to-ammonia conversion are illuminated by rotating disk electrode (RDE), in-situ Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, in-situ Raman spectrum and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Benefiting from the synergistic effect of Cu and Ni, optimum catalyst exhibited excellent nitrate reduction performance. This work provides a new idea for elucidating the underlying eNO 3 RR reaction mechanisms and contributes a promising strategy for designing efficient bimetallic electrocatalysts.

Conversion of Levulinic Acid to γ-Valerolactone Using Hydrotalcite-Derived Cu-Ni Bimetallic Catalyst

Shikang Zhao,Guohong Chen,Kaiqi Zheng,Shaojie Li,Jiaqi Xu,Fanan Wang,Xueping Liu,Rengui Weng

γ-Valerolactone (GVL) is a promising bio-based platform molecule with significant potential for energy applications. The production of GVL via biomass-based levulinic acid (LA) is an important reaction. To enhance the conversion and selectivity of non-precious-metal catalysts in the LA-to-GVL process and to better understand the key factors influencing this conversion, we conducted a series of experiments. In this study, supported Cu-Ni bimetallic catalysts (Cu-Ni2/Al2O3) were prepared using layered double hydroxides (LDHs) as a precursor. Compared with Cu-Ni catalysts synthesized via the conventional impregnation method, the Cu-Ni2/Al2O3catalysts exhibit higher catalytic activity and stability. The results demonstrated that efficient conversion was achieved with isopropanol as the hydrogen donor solvent, a reaction temperature of 180 °C, and a reaction time of 1 h. The yield of GVL reached nearly 90%, with a decrease of approximately only 6% after six consecutive cycles. The Cu-Ni2/Al2O3catalyst proved to be effective for converting biomass-derived LA to GVL, offering a route that not only reduces production costs and environmental impact but also enables efficient biomass-to-energy conversion.

Enhanced NH3 decomposition for H2 production over bimetallic M(M=Co, Fe, Cu)Ni/Al2O3

Enkang Fu,Yu Qiu,Huaichang Lu,Sijun Wang,Lishan Liu,Hanjun Feng,Yanxin Yang,Zizhan Wu,Yunlong Xie,Feng Gong,Rui Xiao

Ammonia (NH 3 ) has been regarded as an attractive energy source for hydrogen production via catalytic decomposition , especially over non-noble metal catalysts . Owing to the decent performance and low cost, nickel (Ni) based catalysts have been widely studied for catalytic decomposition of NH 3 where the decomposition rates, can be further tailored by adding other metals. Herein, we synthesized bimetallic M(M = Co, Fe, Cu)Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalysts delivering superior catalytic performance at a wide temperature range of 350–750 °C. Co-Ni/Al 2 O 3 demonstrated nearly 100% conversion of NH 3 decomposition to H 2 at 700 °C and the gas hourly space velocity of 30,000 ml g −1  min −1 , which was ~20.85% higher than that of intrinsic Ni/Al 2 O 3 . The structural characterizations indicated that Co could decrease the particle size and enhance the dispersion of active sites. The density functional theory calculations substantiated that the associative decomposition of N to generate N 2 was the rate-determining step of the NH 3 decomposition reactions . NH 3 Temperature Programmed Desorption (TPD) results suggested that the enhanced catalytic performance was predominantly attributed to the Co that decreases the energy barrier for the associative decomposition of N to form N 2 . This study provides new insights in designing diverse catalysts for efficient NH 3 decomposition for controllable H 2 production.

PtMx/SBA-15 (M = Co, Cu, Ni and Zn) bimetallic catalysts for crotonaldehyde selective hydrogenation

Xijun Li,Sifan Zhang,Lihua Zhu,Jun Liu,Huan Zhang,Ning Zhao,Bing Hui Chen

Herein, a series of the Pt-based bimetallic catalysts (PtM x /SBA-15) are gained by using ultrasonic incipient wetness impregnation method (M = Co, Cu, Ni or Zn). The experimental results show that the catalytic performance (including catalytic activity (turnover frequency-TOF), selectivity to crotyl alcohol) of PtCo x /SBA-15 for catalyzing crotonaldehyde selective hydrogenation is the best among PtM x /SBA-15. Additionally, the ratio of Pt/Co in the PtCo x /SBA-15 catalysts is changed to successfully synthesize PtCo/SBA-15, PtCo 2 /SBA-15, PtCo 5 /SBA-15. It demonstrates that the selectivity of the PtCo x /SBA-15 catalysts for crotonaldehyde selective hydrogenation to crotyl alcohol is significantly improved with the increase of the Co content. The PtCo 5 /SBA-15 catalyst provides 83.8% conversion of crotonaldehyde, 94.3% selectivity to crotyl alcohol and TOF of 910.5 h −1 under mild reaction conditions (3.0 MPa H 2 , 80 °C and 2.0 h). And PtCo 5 /SBA-15 has much better catalytic performance (higher catalytic activity and selectivity to crotyl alcohol) than PtCu 5 /SBA-15, PtNi 5 /SBA-15 and PtZn 5 /SBA-15. The reasons are as follows: (1) PtCo alloy forms, which is conducive to crotonaldehyde adsorption and activation; (2) there is an appropriate synergy effect between Pt and Co, greatly improving the capacity of the catalyst activating hydrogen under mild conditions; (3) the electron transfers from Co to Pt, resulting in the increase of Pt electron density and decrease of Co electron density, then the Co sites are advantageous to C O group adsorption and activation and Pt sites for H 2 adsorbing and activating; (4) with the increase of the Co proportion in PtCo x /SBA-15, the synergy effect between Pt and Co in PtCo alloy strengthens and thus increases the selectivity of C O group hydrogenation.

Xylitol Production from Xylose by Catalytic Hydrogenation over an Efficient Cu–Ni/SiO2 Bimetallic Catalyst

Hong Du,Xiuyun Ma,Miao Jiang,Siyuan Zhao,Qi Fang,Xiumei Liu,Zongchao Conrad Zhang

Xylitol is a value-added health product from the hemicellulose component in biomass. In this work, highly efficient Cu–Ni/SiO2 catalysts are developed for the production of xylitol by means of xylose hydrogenation. The bimetallic catalysts exhibit higher activity compared to the corresponding monometallic nickel or copper catalyst and the currently used industrial Raney nickel catalyst. The bimetallic catalyst with a higher ratio of nickel to copper shows a better performance. The 5Cu15Ni/SiO2 catalyst exhibits a xylose conversion of 96% accompanied by higher than 99% selectivity to xylitol under the moderate conditions of 100 °C and 3MPa H2. The bimetallic catalysts show improved performances when they are activated at a low temperature. The apparent activation energies of xylose hydrogenation over the 5Cu15Ni/SiO2 and 20Ni/SiO2 catalysts are 16.6 and 25.2 kJ/mol, respectively. The formation of the Cu–Ni alloy leads to a lower activation energy and thus superior performance for xylose hydrogenation to xylitol.
