Magnetic core–shell Fe3O4@Cu2O and Fe3O4@Cu2O–Cu materials as catalysts for aerobic oxidation of benzylic alcohols assisted by TEMPO and N-methylimidazole

Binyu Xu,Samuthirarajan Senthilkumar,Wei Zhong,Zhongquan Shen,Chunxin Lu,Xiaoming Liu

In this work, core–shell Fe3O4@Cu2O and Fe3O4@Cu2O–Cu nanomaterials for aerobic oxidation of benzylic alcohols are reported with 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxyl (TEMPO) and N-methylimidazole (NMI) as the co-catalysts. To anchor Cu2O nanoparticles around the magnetic particles under solvothermal conditions, the magnetic material Fe3O4 was modified by grafting a layer of L-lysine (L-Lys) to introduce –NH2 groups at the surface of the magnetic particles. With amine groups as the anchor, Cu(NO3)2 was used to co-precipitate the desired Cu2O by using ethylene glycol as the reducing agent. Prolonging the reaction time would lead to over-reduced forms of the magnetic materials in the presence of copper, Fe3O4@Cu2O–Cu. The nanomaterials and its precursors were fully characterized by a variety of spectroscopic techniques. In combination with both TEMPO and NMI, these materials showed excellent catalytic activities in aerobic oxidation of benzylic alcohols under ambient conditions. For most of the benzylic alcohols, the conversion into aldehydes was nearly quantitative with aldehydes as the sole product. The materials were recyclable and robust. Up to 7 repeat runs, its activity dropped less than 10%. The over-reduced materials, Fe3O4@Cu2O–Cu, exhibited slightly better performance in durability. The magnetic properties allowed easy separation after reaction by simply applying an external magnet.

Synthesis and light-heat conversion performance of hybrid particles decorated MWCNTs/paraffin phase change materials

Bin Xu,Boyi Wang,Caixia Zhang,Jing Zhou

In this study, we adopted the organic precursor thermal decomposition method to prepare Cu 2 O-Cu-MWCNTs/paraffin light-thermal conversion phase change material via one-step. The phase, micro morphology, phase change behavior, thermal reliability and thermal stability of the products were respectively characterized by XRD, SEM, DSC and TGA. We also investigated their light-thermal conversion properties. The results indicated when the content of precursor was 0.005   mol and 0.01   mol, the average particles size of hybird particles (Cu and Cu 2 O) were 30   nm and 400   nm, respectively. It was also found that the light-heat conversion performance of Cu 2 O-Cu-MWCNTs/paraffin were better than that of MWCNTs/paraffin with the same mass fraction. After we conducted analyses of UV–vis diffuse reflection spectra and thermal conductivity, We attributed the better light-heat conversion performance of Cu 2 O-Cu-MWCNTs/paraffin to the high light absorption ability of Cu 2 O and the reduction of interface thermal resistance between MWCNTs and paraffinresulting from Cu and Cu 2 O decorated MWCNTs.

RGO@Cu2O@Cu Ternary Nanocomposite for High-Performance Non-Enzymatic Glucose Detection

Fangzhao Pu,Zhipeng Yu,Wenjing Lu,Chuncai Kong,Ruijun Lin,Xingyu Bai,Xiaojing Zhang,Jian Lv,Zhimao Yang

Fast, reliable, and low-cost glucose detection methods are of great importance for the control of diabetes. In this study, Cu2O combined with Cu nanoparticles anchored on reduced graphene oxide (RGO), was synthesized to function as the electrode in a non-enzymatic glucose sensor. The synergistic effect between Cu nanoparticles and Cu2O, together with the high conductivity of RGO enabled considerably lower resistivity with greater glucose oxidation activity than pure Cu2O. The RGO@Cu2O@Cu electrode exhibited a high sensitivity of 1.112 mA mM−1 cm−2 with a detection limit of 0.019 μM, and the linear range is up to 4 mM. Additionally, the RGO@Cu2O@Cu electrode displayed good anti-interference performance within human blood and high stability while operating for a long duration. Significantly, the glucose detection capability of the as-designed electrode was comparable to commercial sensors, representing a valuable design for future non-enzymatic glucose sensing.

Efficient degradation of tetracycline by a novel nanoconfinement structure Cu2O/Cu@MXene composite

Qianqian Zhou,Peidong Hong,Xu Shi,Yulian Li,Ke Yao,Wanqi Zhang,Chengming Wang,Junyong He,Kaisheng Zhang,Lingtao Kong

In order to solve the problem of easy aggregation of copper oxides in environmental remediation, it is an effective method to confine copper oxides to suitable substrates. Herein, we design a novel Cu 2 O/Cu@MXene composite with a nanoconfinement structure, and it can effectively activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to produce . OH for degradation tetracycline (TC). Results indicated that the MXene with extraordinary multilayer structure and surface negativity could fix the Cu 2 O/Cu nanoparticles in the layer spaces and suppress the agglomeration of nanoparticles. The removal efficiency of TC reached 99.14 % within 30 min, and the pseudo-first-order reaction kinetic constant was 0.1505 min −1 , which was 3.2 times that of Cu 2 O/Cu alone. The outstanding catalytic performance attributed that the MXene based on Cu 2 O/Cu@MXene could promote the adsorption of TC and electron transmittal between Cu 2 O/Cu nanoparticles. Furthermore, the degradation efficiency of TC was still over 82 % after five cycles. In addition, based on the degradation intermediates provided by LC-MS, two specific degradation pathways were proposed. This study provides a new reference for suppressing the agglomeration of nanoparticles, and broadens the application of MXene materials in the field of environmental remediation.

Preparation of 26-facet Cu2O@Cu composite and its methyl orange adsorption behavior

Ruyue Guo,Jiayuan Chang,Huayi Li,Jie He,Peng Pan,Zhengchun Yang,Jun Wei

A core–shell structure that can achieve effective adsorption of methyl orange (MO) can be prepared by using 26-facet Cu 2 O as a template for producing copper using a reducing agent. However, there are insufficient studies on this topic. Therefore, in this study, Cu 2 O@Cu composites were synthesized using a two-step liquid-phase reduction method. MO was used as a pollutant to test the adsorption properties of the materials. The adsorption experiments showed that the adsorption process followed pseudo-first-order kinetic and Freundlich isotherm. The maximum capacity of the adsorbent was 498 mg/g, and the adsorption occurred via spontaneous and exothermic physical adsorption. By the comparison of adsorbent before and after adsorption, it was found that the content of Cu + decreased and that of CuO increased, indicating that the material was oxidized during the adsorption process. Further, FTIR spectroscopy and zeta potential showed that the adsorption mechanism was the electrostatic attraction between positively charged adsorbent and the sulfonic acid group of the MO. Therefore, the porous core-shell structure and the positively charged adsorbent facilitated the adsorption of anionic dyes. 1 TD can be used as an effective adsorbent for MO.

Surface Oxygen Species Modulation of Cu2O/Cu Foam for Enhanced Nitrate-to-Ammonia Conversion

Yanjun Wang,Yuancai Lv,Yifan Liu,Minghua Liu

The electrochemical reduction of nitrate for ammonia production is recognized as a viable method to support a sustainable artificial nitrogen cycle. Extensive research has been focused on enhancing the performance and selectivity of electrocatalysts for NO 3 - RR (nitrate reduction reaction). In this study, we show that modifying the surface oxygen species via thermal treatment and dispersant addition is an effective way to improve the NO 3 - RR performance of Cu 2 O/CF. Using advanced spectroscopic methods, we show that thermal treatment and dispersant addition can greatly boost the generation of oxygen vacancies and hydroxyl groups on the surface of Cu 2 O/CF. Electrocatalytic reaction rate experiment, in-situ FT-IR, DEMS analyses and DFT calculations further suggest that oxygen vacancies on the Cu 2 O/CF surface promote the adsorption and conversion of nitrate and its intermediate, nitrite. Meanwhile, hydroxyl groups promoted the selective hydrogenation of NO to NH 3 . Our findings highlight the essential role of surface oxygen species in NO 3 - RR and provide a foundation for designing advanced electrocatalysts through surface engineering approaches.

Local oxophilicity Sm incorporation drives structural alteration of Cu2O/Cu catalyst in CO2 electroreduction

Zihao Wei,Yulin Qin,Mengbo Zou,Lin Jia,Haorun Li,Yuekun Zhang,Jinyu Wang,Zeyu Guo,Hao Wu,Zeyu Zhang,Shanghong Zeng

The rational surface regulation of Cu electrocatalysts through doping foreign components has emerged as a feasible pathway in electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction. Herein, the catalysts comprising the Cu 0 -Sm 3+ -Cu + sites are reported to explore the doping-driven the alteration of surface structure and properties. The incorporation of Sm with oxygen affinity in Cu 2 O/Cu decreases the crystallite sizes and evokes lattice expansion of Cu 2 O and Cu to generate surface defects. The interaction of Cu 0 , Sm 3+ and Cu + promotes dual-carbon production by stabilizing Cu + and enhancing *CO coverage and water dissociation. Our findings therefore reveal the role of Sm in promoting beneficial changes of Cu-based electrocatalysts.

Three-dimensional structural ReS2@Cu2O/Cu heterojunction photocatalysts for visible-light-driven CO2 reduction

Liu Jiaxin,Qi Fei,Zhang Nan,Yang Jiayu,Liang Zhiyu,Tian Changqing,Zhang Wenxia,Tang Xiaosheng,Wu Daofu,Huang Qiang

Exploring novel and efficient photocatalysts to accelerate CO 2 photoreduction into useful chemicals or fuels is of great significance. In this work, we developed the three-dimensional (3D) structural heterojunction photocatalysts composed of ReS 2 and Cu 2 O by a drop-casting approach. The ReS 2 microspheres with nanosheets were deposited on the 3D structure of Cu 2 O/Cu foams. The analysis of UV–Vis absorption and PL spectra showed that the ReS 2 @Cu 2 O/Cu heterostructure delivered enhanced visible light absorption and improved charge carrier separation. The resulting ReS 2 @Cu 2 O/Cu-180 exhibited the CO yield of 14.3 µmol g −1 under the visible light irradiation. The realized S-scheme heterostructure not only promoted the separation of the photogenerated electron and hole pairs, but also enhanced the visible light absorption. Furthermore, the enriched electrons with high reducing abilities aggregated into the conduction band and diffused to the surface of Cu 2 O for favoring the CO 2 reduction and CO formation. This study is expected to provide a strategy to prepare high-performance S-scheme photocatalysts to perform efficient photocatalytic CO 2 reduction.

Water- and Acid-Sensitive Cu2O@Cu-MOF Nano Sustained-Release Capsules with Superior Antifouling Behaviors

Huali Li,Shuwen Luo,Liuqin Zhang,Zilong Zhao,Min Wu,Weihua Li,Fa-Qian Liu

Marine biofouling is one of the technical bottlenecks restricting the development of the global marine economy. Among the commercial self-polishing antifouling coatings, cuprous oxide is an irreplaceable component because of its efficiency and broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. However, one of the biggest obstacles to achieving long-term antifouling is the “initial burst and final decay” of cuprous oxide in the coating. Here, we lock the copper ions by establishing an antifouling unit composed of Cu2O (core) and Cu-based metal–organic framework (Cu-MOF, shell). Cu-MOF is densely grown in situ on the periphery of Cu2O by acid proton etching. The shell structure of Cu-MOF can effectively improve the stability of the internal Cu2O and thus achieve the stable and slow release of copper ions. Furthermore, Cu2O@Cu-MOF nanocapsules can also achieve active defense by rapid and complete dissolution of Cu2O@Cu-MOF at local acidic microenvironment (pH ≤ 5) where the adhesion of fouling organisms occurs. Super-resolution fluorescence microscopy is used to explain the sterilization mechanism. Relying on the water- and acid-sensitive properties of Cu-MOF shell, the stable, controlled and efficient release of copper ions has been achieved for the Cu2O@Cu-MOF nanocapsules in the self-polishing antifouling coatings. Thus, these controlled-release nanocapsules make long-term antifouling promising.

Boosting electrocatalytic nitrate reduction to ammonia via Cu2O/Cu(OH)2 heterostructures promoting electron transfer

Geng Jing,Ji Sihan

Electrocatalytic nitrate ( \({\rm{N}}{{\rm{O}}_3}^ -\) ) reduction to ammonia (NH 3 ) offers a viable approach for sustainable NH 3 production and environmental denitrification. Copper (Cu) possesses a distinctive electronic structure, which can augment the reaction kinetics of \({\rm{N}}{{\rm{O}}_3}^ -\) and impede hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), rendering it a promising contender for the electrosynthesis of NH 3 from \({\rm{N}}{{\rm{O}}_3}^ -\) . Nevertheless, the role of Cu 2 O in copper-based catalysts still requires further investigation for a more comprehensive understanding. Herein, the Cu 2 O/Cu(OH) 2 heterostructures are successfully fabricated through liquid laser irradiation using CuO nanoparticles as a precursor. Experimental and theoretical researches reveal that Cu 2 O/Cu(OH) 2 heterostructure exhibits enhanced electrocatalytic performance for \({\rm{N}}{{\rm{O}}_3}^ -\) to NH 3 because Cu(OH) 2 promotes electron transfer and reduces the valence state of Cu active site in Cu 2 O. At −0.6 V (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)), the NH 3 yield reaches its maximum at 1630.66 ± 29.72 \({\rm{\mu g}} \cdot {{\rm{h}}^{ - 1}} \cdot {\rm{m}}{{\rm{g}}_{{\rm{cat}}}}^{ - 1}\) , while the maximum of Faraday efficiency (FE) is 76.95% ± 5.51%. This study expands the technical scope of copper-based catalyst preparation and enhances the understanding of the electrocatalytic mechanism of \({\rm{N}}{{\rm{O}}_3}^ -\) to NH 3 .

Potential-induced synthesis of cavity Cu2O/Cu nanocubes for enhanced electroreduced CO2 to C2+ products

Hu Yaping,Zhai Shasha,Guo Yaping,Dang Shan,Li Jing,Yang Miao

Electrochemical reduction reaction of CO 2 (CO 2 RR) to C 1 and C 2 products can be achieved on Cu-based electrocatalysts. C 2 products exhibit higher energy density and economic value compared to C 1 products, making them more desirable as reduction products. However, the production of C 2 products on pure Cu catalysts involves multi-step proton-coupled electron transfer and C–C coupling steps, which are kinetically slow and result in poor catalytic activity and selectivity for the products. The cavity nanocubes Cu 2 O(0.13-AA), Cu 2 O(0.10-AA) and Cu 2 O(0.15-AA) catalysts were synthesized via wet chemical reduction by adjusting the concentration of the reducing agent. The electrochemical pre-reduction method was used to obtain Cu 2 O/Cu(0.13-AA), Cu 2 O/Cu(0.10-AA) and Cu 2 O/Cu(0.15-AA) catalysts for CO 2 RR. Cu 2 O/Cu(0.13 M-AA) catalyst achieves the high Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 39.98% for C 2 H 4 and 54.76% for C 2 products (C 2 H 4 , C 2 H 6 , and C 2 H 5 OH), with significant inhibition of the hydrogen evolution reaction. In situ Raman experiments demonstrate that the cavity structure of the nanocubes enhances the local concentration of *CO intermediates, thereby promoting the C–C coupling process and improving the selectivity of CO 2 reduction to C 2 products.
