A porous Cu2O/TiO2 hybrid photocatalyst with n-type Cu2O decorated on the mesoporous TiO2 derived from MIL-125 was designed through the in situ Cu2+ ion reduction strategy. Under UV-vis light irradiation, the Cu2O/TiO2 composite with 4.2 wt% of Cu2O displayed the highest hydrogen evolution rate of 14.39 mmol h−1 g−1, which was about 9.6 and 24.8 times that of the original mesoporous TiO2 and pure Cu2O, respectively. The enhancement in photocatalytic activity can be mainly attributed to the type-I band structure formed, which can efficiently enhance the photoexcited charge carrier mobility across the phase interfaces of the Cu2O/TiO2 composite, as evidenced by the UV-DRS spectra, Mott–Schottky curves, and XPS analysis. Besides, the narrow band gap of Cu2O, conducive to the absorption of visible light, and the high specific surface of TiO2 were also found to contribute to the photoactivity enhancement. This work will provide a new perspective for the study of type-I photocatalysts.

A palygorskite (Pal)-supported Cu 2 O–TiO 2 heterojunction composite (Cu 2 O–TiO 2 –Pal) was successfully prepared. The morphology, structure and chemical composition of the composite was characterized, and the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride using this composite was also investigated. The results showed that a layer of TiO 2 − Cu 2 O was successfully loaded on the surface of Pal. The Cu 2 O–TiO 2 –Pal composite had a specific surface area of 93 m 2 ·g − 1 , mesoporous features, and a uniform slit channel. The composite possessed twofold removal ability to TC, including adsorptive capability for the separation and solar-light illuminate photocatalytic in degradation. The maximum adsorption capacity of Cu 2 O–TiO 2 –Pal for TC was 113.6 mg·g − 1 at 20 °C as calculated by the Langmuir model. The pseudo-first-order degradation rate constant of 50 mL of TC with an initial concentration of 30 mg·L − 1 reached 0.0129 min − 1 when the Cu 2 O–TiO 2 –Pal concentration was 1.0 g·L − 1 . The total removal rate of TC reached 88.81% in the presence of Cu 2 O–TiO 2 –Pal. In addition, the composite could be regenerated by calcination at 400 °C and recycled more than three times, which is useful for practical applications.

Antimicrobial coatings with self-cleaning and long-lasting antibacterial properties are critical for medical applications to reduce healthcare-associated infections. However, existing coatings pose challenges of poor durability, limited light response, or rapid antibacterial agent loss. Herein, we report a scalable strategy to fabricate a Cu 2 O/TiO 2 composite coating (CT-37, Cu:Ti = 3:7 mass ratio) via in-situ chemical reduction and two-step semi-curing spraying, integrating hierarchical micro-nanostructured Cu₂O/TiO₂ particles with lithium polysilicate adhesive. CT-37 exhibits good superhydrophobicity (contact angle ( θ CA ) = 151.3 ± 1.4°, roll-off angle ( θ RA ) =3.4 ± 0.4°), retaining a θ CA > 150° after 10 abrasion cycles and 7 days of acid/alkali immersion. Under visible light, it achieves >99% sterilization efficiency against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus , and maintains a > 90% bactericidal rate after 50 cycles. This study reveals a novel synergistic mechanism: (i) superhydrophobicity reduces bacterial adhesion by minimizing solid-liquid contact area; (ii) rapid Cu ion release from the coating matrix directly inhibits bacterial proliferation; (iii) photocatalytic generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS, including •O 2 − , h + , and •OH) under visible light further eradicates adhered microbes. This cost-effective coating, coupled with the deepening understanding of its antimicrobial mechanism, paves the way for large-scale medical and public health applications.

Hydrogen production by photoreforming of biomass-derived ethanol is a renewable way of obtaining clean fuel. We developed a site-specific deposition strategy to construct supported Au catalysts by rationally constructing Ti3+defects inTiO2nanorods and Cu2O-TiO2p-n junction across the interface of two components. The Au nanoparticles (~2.5 nm) were selectively anchored onto either TiO2nanorods (Au@TiO2/Cu2O) or Cu2O nanocubes (Au@Cu2O/TiO2) or both TiO2and Cu2O (Au@TiO2/Cu2O@Au) with the same Au loading. The electronic structure of supported Au species was changed by forming Au@TiO2interface due to the adjacent Ti3+defects and the associated oxygen vacancies while unchanged in Au@Cu2O/TiO2catalyst. The p-n junction of TiO2/Cu2O promoted charge separation and transfer across the junction. During ethanol photoreforming, Au@TiO2/Cu2O catalyst possessing both the Au@TiO2interface and the p-n junction showed the highest H2production rate of 8548 μmol gcat−1h−1under simulated solar light, apparently superior to both Au@TiO2and Au@Cu2O/TiO2catalyst. The acetaldehyde was produced in liquid phase at an almost stoichiometric rate, and C−C cleavage of ethanol molecules to form CH4or CO2was greatly inhibited. Extensive spectroscopic results support the claim that Au adjacent to surface Ti3+defects could be active sites for H2production and p-n junction of TiO2/Cu2O facilitates photo-generated charge transfer and further dehydrogenation of ethanol to acetaldehyde during the photoreforming. Keywords:ethanol reforming;hydrogen production;Au catalyst;Ti3+defect;site-specific deposition

Cu 2 O decorated TiO 2 nano-tube arrays (Cu 2 O/TiO 2 NTAs) photoelectrode was fabricated through electrodeposition strategy. Meanwhile, physicochemical properties of the resulting photoelectrode were systematically studied by series of measurements. Results indicated that Cu 2 O/TiO 2 NTAs photoelectrode performed a significantly enhanced light absorbance in the visible region between 400 and 800 nm, transient photocurrent density of 0.162 mA Cm −2 , photogenerated charge separation efficiency and 99.9% of photoelectrocatalytic efficiency for decomposition of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol within 120 min Xenon illumination with the help of +1.0 V (vs. SCE) potential. Furthermore, the enhanced visible light responsible photoelectrocatalytic mechanism was proposed and discussed.

The band structure of heterojunction plays an important role in the performance of actual application and can be adjusted by the change of preparation condition. Herein, Cu 2 O nanofilms with different band structures were prepared via electrodeposition method by modifying the solution environment. With the value of pH increased from 7 to 12, the conductivity of the Cu₂O nanofilms shifted from n-type to p-type. Combined the obtained Cu 2 O film with TiO 2 nanoarray, the Cu 2 O/TiO 2 heterojunction were prepared. The photoelectrochemical performance of the Cu 2 O/TiO 2 heterojunction was affected by the interfacial band structure. The T7 sample has higher photocurrent (450 μA) caused by the unique S-scheme band structure, the T11 sample with a p-n junction structure takes second place (225 μA). The n-n type II heterojunction has the lowest photocurrent (20 μA). The Fermi level of Cu 2 O nanofilm was affected by the type of defects, such as oxygen and copper vacancies, leading to changes of band structure at the interface between Cu 2 O and TiO 2 . The obtained result further illustrates the importance of energy band engineering, and provides route and sight for the development and application of Cu 2 O/TiO 2 heterojunction.

Addressing the ever-growing arsenite pollution in groundwater has become an essential and urgent issue for ensuring the safety of human beings and the environment. It is highly attractive to preoxidize As(III) to relatively low toxic As(V) for further efficient arsenic removal by adsorption, ion exchange, or coagulation. In this study, a novel heterostructure Cu2O@TiO2 nanotube array coated titanium anode (CTNTA) was fabricated by combination of electrochemical anodization and electrodeposition and used for the highly efficient photoelectrocatalytic oxidation conversion of As(III) to As(V) in aqueous solution. The morphology, composition, and photoelectric performances of the CTNTA anode were systematically characterized. The effect of the loading amount of Cu2O nanoparticles on the photoelectrocatalytic oxidation kinetics of As(III) was investigated, and the comparison study among photocatalytic, electrocatalytic, and photoelectrocatalytic oxidations of As(III) was also explored to demonstrate the synergistic effect of As(III) oxidation conversion performance. The heterostructure CTNTAs-1.00 delivered a substantially enhanced photoelectrocatalytic oxidation ratio of As(III) at 95% within 30 min at a current density of 10 mA·cm–2 under visible-light irradiation. The electrochemical deposition amount of Cu2O nanoparticles on TiO2 nanotube arrays (TNTAs) was found to be positively correlated with the achievement of boosted As(III) oxidation efficiency. The high photoelectrocatalytic oxidation performance of the CTNTA was ascribed to the favored separation efficiency of photoinduced carriers and electron–hole pairs under both visible light irradiation and electric potential conditions. The photoelectrocatalytic oxidation reaction mechanism was proven to be ascribed to the active species of holes (h+), superoxide radicals (•O2–), and hydroxyl radicals (•OH). These results highlight the high conversion rate of As(III) by the photoelectrocatalytic oxidation reaction on such a nanostructured anode, which offers a promising methodology for further in-depth oxidation of As(III) in aqueous solution.
