A novel method for preparing CuInS2/ZnS quantum dots (CuInS2/ZnS QDs) with the crystal structure of sphalerite by one-pot hot injection was developed in this paper. The as-prepared core CuInS2 quantum dots (CuInS2 QDs) was uniform spherical nanoparticle with the average diameter of about 2 nm with the fluorescent quantum yields (QY) of about 2.6%. By capping a shell of ZnS on the surface of CuInS2 QDs, the formed CuInS2/ZnS QDs exhibited obvious enhanced fluorescent emission with the QY of about 20%. Intriguingly, the crystal structure of obtained CuInS2/ZnS QDs is sphalerite, which was confirmed by XRD. Considering the different terminal group between these small organic molecules, mercaptoacetic acid (TGA), thioglycerol (TGC) and mercaptoethylamine (MEA) were further selected as capping molecules to exchange the surface ligands of CuInS2/ZnS QDs. The obtained CuInS2/ZnS QDs modified with TGC exhibited excellent photostability in physiological conditions. To investigate the effect of ligand molecules on the biocompatible of CuInS2/ZnS QDs, the experiment on the cytotoxicity of CuInS2/ZnS QDs to A549 cells were conducted. The results indicated that CuInS2/ZnS QDs capped with TGC showed the lowest cytotoxicity while CuInS2/ZnS QDs capped with MEA exhibited the highest cytotoxicity among the three types of CuInS2/ZnS QDs modified with ligands with different terminal group. These results provided a sight on how to select surface ligands to modify CuInS2/ZnS QDs when CuInS2/ZnS QDs will apply in biological fields.

All commercial chemiluminescence (CL) assays are conducted with either glow or flash CL of eye-visible waveband from chemical luminophores. Herein, glow and flash, as well as waveband adjustable CL from the same nanoparticle luminophore of thiol-capped CuInS2@ZnS nanocrystals (CIS@ZnS-Thiol), are proposed via extensively exploiting the differed redox nature of CL triggering reagents. Taking thiosalicylic acid (TSA) as the model thiol-capping agent, the electron-injection-initiated charge transfer between CIS@ZnS-TSA and reductant can bring out efficient glow CL while the hole-injection-initiated charge transfer between CIS@ZnS-TSA and oxidant can give off obvious flash CL under optimum conditions. The maximum emission wavelength for CL of CIS@ZnS-TSA is adjustable from 730 nm to 823 nm via employing different triggering agents. Promisingly, the coexistent reductant of N2H4·H2O and oxidant of H2O2 can be employed as dual triggering reagents to trigger eye-visible and highly efficient flash CL from CIS@ZnS-TSA. The maximum emission intensity for flash CL of CIS@ZnS-TSA/N2H4–H2O2 is 101-fold greater than the glow CL of CIS@ZnS-TSA/N2H4 and 22-fold greater than the flash CL of CIS@ZnS-TSA/H2O2, respectively. The flash CL from CIS@ZnS-TSA/N2H4–H2O2 is qualified for highly sensitive and selective CL immunoassay in a commercialized typical procedure with the entire operating process manually terminated within 35 min.

In this work, we designed new dual-mode “turn-on” electrochemical (EC) and photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensors for the detection of dopamine (DA) based on 0D/2D/2D CuInS 2 /ZnS quantum dot (QD)–black phosphorous nanosheet (BPNS)–TiO 2 nanosheet (TiO 2 NS) nanocomposites. QDs can not only improve the photocurrent of the developed PEC sensors, but also provide the electrochemical signal in the EC detection. BPNSs as p-type semiconductor with high conductive properties work as electron acceptors and are utilized to improve the sensitivity of the DA PEC and EC sensors. Under irradiation of visible light or the applied voltage, DA is both excited and releases electrons, realizing “turn-on” detection. The PEC sensors have a linear range of 0.1–100 μM with a lower detection limit of 0.028 μM. For the EC detection, BPNSs can accelerate electron transfer which attribute to its excellent conductivity. In the range of 1–200 μM, the working curve of DA detection by the EC sensors was established and the detection limit is 0.88 μM. Comparing the two methods, the PEC sensors have a lower detection limit, and the EC sensors have a wider monitoring range. The dual-mode sensors of EC and PEC pave an effective way for the detection in biological and medical fields. Graphical abstract

CuInS 2 quantum dots are considered near-ideal fluorophores based on their bright emission and low toxicity. However, CuInS 2 quantum dots are still bothered by their sensitivity to surface chemistry and chemical environment. Traditionally, the CIS QDs require an additional coating process to be encapsulated inside silica sphere or organic polymer. Up till now, few works have been made concerning improving the intrinsic stability of CIS QDs . In an effort to improve the stability of CuInS 2 quantum dots, we came up with a new method by increasing the ZnS shell thickness. These QDs were characterized by photoluminescence, HRTEM, XRD and XRF analysis. We investigated the influence of ZnS shell thickness on the ambient stability of CIS/ZnS QDs. The results demonstrated that a thicker ZnS shell helped significantly improve both photostability and chemical stability of the QDs. Finally, the thick shell QDs were dispersed into transparent polymer matrix and fabricated into a LED device, which also gave much more stability compared with conventional QDs.

CuInS2 quantum dots (CIS QDs), with tunable photoluminescence spanning from the visible to near-infrared (NIR) region, hold significant potential for consumer electronics and bioimaging due to their favorable photophysical properties and absence of toxic elements. However, their intrinsic lack of short-wavelength emission has hindered their use in white light-emitting applications. Herein, we report a facile synthesis of zinc–acetate–oleylamine (Zn–Ac–OAm) and oleylamine (OAm)-coencapsulated CIS/ZnS QDs that deliver full-spectrum sunlight-like emissions, characterized by a distinct 455 nm peak and an ultrabroad full width at half-maximum (fwhm) of 241 nm. The Zn–Ac–OAm emitter produces blue-green fluorescence, effectively compensating for the short-wavelength deficiency of the CIS/ZnS QDs. More importantly, strong interactions between Zn–Ac–OAm and CIS/ZnS QDs enable efficient energy transfer within coencapsulated structures. As a proof of concept, white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) fabricated using these coencapsulated CIS/ZnS QDs exhibit excellent photophysical performance, achieving a high color rendering index (CRI) of 92.1 and external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 7.2%. This coencapsulation strategy, together with the elucidated photophysical mechanisms, provides viable pathways for extending the application of long-wavelength-emitting nanomaterials in next-generation lighting and display technologies.

A green method for the one-pot direct synthesis of hydrophilic CuInS2 and CuInS2–ZnS colloidal quantum dots was developed employing N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) as a solvent. Highly reactive H2S gas, in situ generated from the reaction between FeS and H2SO4, was utilized as the sulphur source for the synthesis of hydrophilic CuInS2 quantum dots. Short chain thiols were applied as ligands, reactivity controllers and sulphur sources for the growth of the ZnS shell. The growth of CuInS2 quantum dots experiences a typical Ostwald ripening process, and it should be controlled in 45 min due to the pyrolysis of the ligands. The reaction temperature should not exceed 130 °C. The ZnS shell was grown on CuInS2 quantum dots in a very simple and one-pot approach. Both the luminescence and optical stability were improved substantially after the formation of the ZnS shell. The versatility of this synthetic strategy was demonstrated by extending it to the synthesis of other metal sulphide quantum dots, for instance, CdS and ZnS quantum dots.

Screening a novel electrochemiluminescence (ECL) system and reducing electrochemical interference by lowering the ECL potential are crucial to ECL evolution. Herein, an ECL system is explored with different hydrazine compounds as coreactants and ternary CuInS2/ZnS nanocrystals (CIS/ZnS NCs) as a luminophore, demonstrating that hydrazine compounds with varied structures would assuredly affect the ECL triggering potential and efficiency. Electro-oxidized hydrazine-based coreactants containing a symmetrical structure and −N–N single bonds with strong reducibility could produce an efficient electron transfer recombination path with electro-oxidized CIS/ZnS NCs, which eventually generate efficient and low-triggering-potential ECL performance; otherwise, the hydrazine compounds with a double bond, such as −C═N or −C═O, or strong electronegative atoms would reduce the ECL efficiency and increase the ECL triggering potential, which result from double bonds or strong electronegative atoms of hydrazine compounds hindering the protonation of coreactants and then delaying the electron–hole recombination process. The structure of hydrazine-based coreactants with a −C═S double bond would competitively bond with the Cu element within CIS/ZnS NCs, contributing to the blank ECL with CIS/ZnS NCs as the luminophore. Furthermore, CIS/ZnS NCs exhibit two additional low hole injected processes under alkaline conditions through exploration of the differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) nature from CIS/ZnS NCs. The ultralow-triggering-potential of CIS/ZnS NCs around 0.11 V could be achieved by adjusting the hole injection processes of NCs and selecting pasoniazide as the coreactant, which is extremely below any previously reported ECL system. This work contributes to a deeper understanding of the ECL mechanism.

Glioma stem cells (GSCs) are considered the key to the occurrence, development, invasion, recurrence and sensitivity to treatment of brain tumors. Precise molecular imaging of GSCs by means of probes in vivo has therefore become a premise of solving the above problems. Herein, a sensitive, specific, accurate and biocompatible molecular nanoprobe is reported with MR/fluorescence imaging modalities for CD133+ glioma tumor bimodal targeted imaging. Cd-free high quality CuInS2/ZnS core/shell quantum dots (QDs) were synthesized for fluorescence imaging; DTPA-coupled BSA with Gd3+ chelation (BSA-DTPAGd) were prepared and used both for phase transfer of hydrophobic CuInS2/ZnS QDs and MR imaging modality. The resulting hydrophilic paramagnetic QDs (pQDs) were then linked with anti-CD133 monoclonal antibody, pQDs-CD133mAb denoting the framework of the entire molecular probe, for tumor targeting. The obtained pQDs-CD133mAb has a proper size (ca. 45 nm) and good colloidal stability. It exhibits a high quality fluorescent emission (ca. 630 nm) together with high longitudinal relaxivity (r1 = 15.2 mM−1 s−1) compared with that of commercial Magnevist (r1 = 3.12 mM−1 s−1). Dual modal imaging in vitro and in vivo shows potent tumor enhancement with administration of pQDs-CD133mAb. A biodistribution study indicates hepatobiliary and renal processing of pQDs-CD133mAb with no obvious toxicity. It could be therefore concluded, with a dual-modal imaging and targeting strategy, pQDs-CD133mAb presents a great potential as an alternative for accurate diagnosis of glioma.

Monodispersed superparticles (SPs) consisting of hydrophobic CuInS2@ZnS quantum dots (QDs) were prepared through a self-assembling process induced by introducing ethanol into the cyclohexane solution of the QDs stabilized by 1-dodecanethiol. The solvent polarity-dependent size and size distribution of the resultant SPs were carefully characterized by using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and dynamic light scattering. The formation and the growth mechanism of the SPs were investigated. By manipulating the nucleation and the growth kinetics through the addition rate of ethanol, the size was effectively tuned without broadening the size distribution of the SPs. By overcoating the SPs with amphibious Fe3O4 nanocrystals (NCs) stabilized by poly(4-vinylpyrollidone), aqueous dispersible SPs were obtained. Inheriting the fluorescent and magnetic properties from the corresponding mother particles, the resultant SPs presented excellent fluorescent and magnetic properties and, thus, may potentially be useful for bioseparation, detection, etc.

A novel sensing fluorescent probe based on the fluorescence quenching of the thioglycolic acid-capped CuInS 2 /ZnS quantum dots (CuInS 2 /ZnS/TGA QDs) was established for cobalt ions detection. The fluorescence quenching of CuInS 2 /ZnS/TGA QDs was due to the increasing surface deficiency and the inner-filter effect, which were attributed to the reaction between Co 2+ and sulfur bonds on the surface of QDs. The quenching curve could be fitted by a typical Stern–Volmer-type equation, with a linear relationship between the quenching efficiency and the concentration of cobalt ions in the range of 0.3012–90.36 μmol L −1 . And the detection limit (S/N=3) for Co 2+ was 0.16 μmol L −1 . Therefore, the established probe provided a simple, rapid, cheap and sensitive method for Co 2+ detection. In a word, this method can be used to detect Co 2+ in the environment.

The detection and imaging of intracellular copper ions (Cu 2+ ) play a crucial role in understanding their physiological implications and their involvement in various cellular processes. This study focuses on the synthesis and characterization of water-soluble near-infrared fluorescent CIS/ZnS core–shell quantum dots (QDs) with excellent biocompatibility and stability. The QDs exhibit exceptional selectivity and sensitivity for Cu 2+ detection, allowing for precise quantification of Cu 2+ content within biological systems. Furthermore, Co-incubation of the QDs with HeLa cells demonstrates their impressive cellular imaging capabilities, facilitated by fluorescence bursts in response to changing Cu 2+ content. Overall, our proposed QDs are of great significance in advancing the research and application of near-infrared semiconductor quantum dots in biomedicine, and their near-infrared fluorescence properties and high fluorescence quantum yield (34.48 %) make them very advantageous for the precise detection of intracellular Cu 2+ and cell fluorescence imaging. This research contributes to the understanding of copper ion dynamics within cells and opens avenues for further exploration of its role in cellular physiology.

In this Article, we present a facile microwave-assisted synthesis route for the preparation of water-soluble and high-quality CuInS2/ZnS nanocrystals (NCs) with glutathione as the stabilizer. The as-prepared CuInS2/ZnS NCs exhibited small particle sizes (∼3.3 nm), long photoluminescence lifetimes, and color-tunable properties ranging from the visible to the near-infrared by varying the initial ratio of Cu/In in the precursors. The low-toxicity, highly luminescent and biocompatible CuInS2/ZnS NCs were applied to cell imaging, showing that they could be used as promising fluorescent probes. Furthermore, the CuInS2/ZnS NCs were used as the signal labels for a fluoroimmunoassay of the biomarker IL-6, showing their great potential for use as reliable point-of-care diagnostics for biomarkers of cancer and other diseases.
