Reaction Characterization of CO Chemical Looping Combustion of Spinel CuMn2O4 Oxygen Carriers

Hailin Zheng,Mingjie Liang,Weiwei Cai,Kang Li,Min Zheng

Chemical loop combustion (CLC) is an innovative combustion technology that inherently separates the greenhouse gas CO2 while producing no NOx emissions. In this study, a CuMn2O4 composite oxygen carrier was synthesized using the sol–gel method, and the chemical looping combustion performance of the carrier was examined in a fixed-bed reactor utilizing CO as the reducing medium, along with an assessment of its cyclic reaction stability. The rapid increase in oxygen release from CuMn2O4 between 700 and 900 °C indicates a high reaction rate within this temperature range. Furthermore, the oxygen carrier demonstrates the capacity to release a substantial amount of oxygen consistently, with the release reaching its peak at 900 °C. The oxygen release from CuMn2O4 increases significantly within the temperature range of 700–900 °C. Ten reactions involving CuMn2O4 were conducted at 900 °C in an atmosphere containing 8% CO and 3% O2. The results demonstrated an average CO2 selectivity of 96.44%, a CO conversion rate of 95.98%, and a CO2 yield of 93.70%, effectively achieving near-complete capture of CO2. The results show that CuMn2O4 can significantly improve the CO conversion activity and basically regenerate the oxygen carriers of air oxidation reduction. This study fully proves that it is feasible to achieve CO2 capture by CuMn2O4 for converter gas CO, which is the main byproduct produced by converter smelting.

CuMn2O4 as a Dual Redox-Active Cathode Material for Aqueous Mg-Ion Batteries

Bo Liu,Yaohong Yang,Yixin Li,Fangyu Xiong,Dong Wang,Jili Yue,Guangsheng Huang

Abstract Manganese-based oxides are attractive cathode materials for aqueous magnesium-ion batteries (AMIBs) due to their high theoretical capacity, abundant resources, and environmental friendliness but suffer from poor conductivity, manganese dissolution, and structural degradation during cycling. In this work, CuMn2O4 is proposed as a dual redox-active cathode material for AMIBs. During discharge, lattice copper ions are extracted and in-situ reduced to metallic copper, which contributes to capacity and enhances electronic conductivity. Consequently, CuMn2O4 delivers highly enhanced capacity (211 mAh g−1 at 100 mA g−1) and cycling stability compared to monometallic Mn3O4. Moreover, the aqueous Mg∥CuMn2O4 full cell achieves an average discharge voltage of 1.80 V and stable cycling for over 50 cycles. This study confirms the feasibility of CuMn2O4 as a high-performance cathode material for AMIBs and provides insights for developing low-cost, high-performance multivalent-ion battery cathode materials.

Molten salt-assisted synthesis of CuMn2O4 spinels and their enhanced Infrared Radiation properties

Runyi Bi,Yongjie Chen,Minghui Sun,Linrui Hou,Changzhou Yuan

CuMn 2 O 4 (CMO) spinels show great potentiallity in the radiation heat transfer of industrial furnaces and thermal protection of hypersonic vechicles due to its unique crystal structure and excellent infrared radiative performance at short and middle wavebands. However, it still remains a considerable challenge to prepare high-infrared-emissivity CMO spinels at low temperatures. Herein, CMO spinels are successfully prepared via a facile molten salt-assisted method at a reduced temperatures lower than 900 °C. The synthetic parameters of CMO including the mass ratio of the reactants, i. e. CuO and MnO 2 , to the eutectic salt NaCl-KCl and annealing temperature are investigated in detail. The optimium CMO-850 sample exhibits the highest infrared emissivity of 0.907 in the 3 – 5 μm band at 600 °C, which is related to the optimal crystalization, smaller band gap, as well as higher oxygen vacancy concentration (34.33%). Moreover, the CMO-850 based coating demonstrates excellent interfacial bonding, thermal shock resistance, and infrared radiation properties, and achieves high infrared radiative values of 0.919 (600 °C) at 3 – 5 μm and 0.923 (300 °C) at 8 – 14 μm, respectively. Our work provides an essential guidance for future design of advanced infrared-emissive materials toward energy protection, heat dissipation, and eve radiative cooling fields.

Dual-material synergy in CuMn2O4@CuMn2S4 core-shell nanostructures: Towards high energy density supercapacitors

Wenhao Peng,Xin Min,Shiping Luo,Aijuan Xie

Transition metal oxides (TMOs) and sulfides (TMSs) have garnered significant attention as promising electrode materials for supercapacitors due to their complementary properties, including high conductivity, abundant active sites, and structural stability. The rational design and facile synthesis of TMO-TMS hybrid materials with unique architectures are critical to achieving high-performance energy storage devices. This study presents a novel CuMn 2 O 4 @CuMn 2 S 4 core-shell nanostructure developed on a nickel foam substrate through hydrothermal and sulfurization processes. The CuMn 2 O 4 core offers robust structural support and high conductivity, while the CuMn 2 S 4 shell enhances electrochemical activity and ion diffusion. The synthesized material, CuMn 2 O 4 @CuMn 2 S 4 NF-2, achieved a specific capacitance of 760.5 F·g −1 at 1.0 A·g −1 , demonstrating superior electron transfer resistance ( R ct =2.06 Ω) and excellent cycling stability, retaining 85.2 % of capacitance after 5000 cycles. Furthermore, an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) with CuMn 2 O 4 @CuMn 2 S 4 NF-2 as the positive electrode and activated carbon as the negative electrode delivered a maximum energy density of 35.31 Wh·kg −1 at a power density of 750 W·kg −1 and retained 75.5 % capacitance after 5000 cycles. This study underscores the significant potential of integrating oxide and sulfide materials in a single architecture, offering a promising pathway for designing high-performance energy storage systems that capitalize on the synergistic properties of both material types.

Construction of hierarchical CuMn2O4/SiC porous microspheres with superb high infrared radiation properties and heat dissipation application

Runyi Bi,Minghui Sun,Linrui Hou,Changzhou Yuan

Spinel CuMn 2 O 4 (CMO) has attracted much attention for its exceptional high-temperature high infrared radiation (HIR) emissivity owing to its narrow band gap and unique symmetrical crystal structure. However, the HIR properties at medium/low temperatures limit its extensive application. Herein, we elaborately design and fabricate hierarchical CMO/SiC (CMO-S) hybrid microspheres with wrinkled surface and porous cavity inside via spray-drying method. In the framework, SiC is encapsulated in the porous CMO microspheres, which substantially improves the medium/low-temperature HIR emissivity of spinel CMO and inhibits the oxidative failure of SiC meanwhile. The optimal CMO-S with 10 wt% SiC (CMO-S10) possesses the largest specific surface area, the richest oxygen vacancies, and the smallest band gap, which cooperatively render remarkable HIR emissivity of 0.935 at 30 °C in the 3 ‒ 5 μm band, along with the highest emissivity (0.944) at 300 °C. Moreover, the CMO-S10 based emitting coating exhibits superb heat dissipation efficiency as well thanks to its superb HIR emissivity in 8 ‒ 14 μm band. More essentially, our insights here provide meaningful guidance for rational construction of advanced HIR emitting materials toward efficient heat dissipation, leading more green and sustainable energy consumption.

Simultaneous pollutant degradation and electricity generation by photocatalytic fuel cell with visible light responsive N-CQDs/Bi2MoO6/CuMn2O4/Ti photoanode

Jitai Li,Yunlan Xu,Dengjie Zhong

In this work, an efficient nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CQDs) doped Bi 2 MoO 6 /CuMn 2 O 4 heterojunction photoanode (N-CQDs/Bi 2 MoO 6 /CuMn 2 O 4 ) was successfully prepared via a facile hydrothermal-coupling strategy, and it was integrated with a Cu cathode to build a PFC for concurrent electricity generation and organic pollutant degradation. Approximately 92% of RhB was eliminated, accompanied by photocurrent and power output values of 8.3 mA·cm −2 and 51.0 μW·cm −2 , respectively. In addition, the open-circuit voltage and photoconversion efficiency were measured as 0.60 V and 0.12%. The superior performance of PFC originates from the integrated action of carrier separation of Bi 2 MoO 6 /CuMn 2 O 4 Z-scheme heterojunction and electron-storage function of N-CQDs, which reinforces visible-light harvesting, suppressed charge recombination, accelerates the interfacial electron transfer and sustains strong redox potentials. The degradation process involved the participation of both radical species (•OH, •O 2 ⁻ ) and non-radical species (h + ). Due to the formation of local Schottky-like contact between Bi 2 MoO 6 /CuMn 2 O 4 and N-CQDs, N-CQDs act as an efficient electron mediator, which facilitates the generation of reactive oxygen species and further enhances the degradation efficiency. This work provides a new insight into constructing quantum-dot-mediated heterojunction photoanode.

Unveiling the mechanism of alkali etched CuMn2O4-δ spinel catalysis enhance for acetone catalytic Oxidation: The roles of Metal-Oxygen bond and oxygen defect site

Min Xu,Lei Wang,Yonggang Sun,Yulong Ma,Xin Zhang,Juan Zhang,Yingbo Zhu,Li Zhu,Song Qiao,Jinpeng Wei,Wenxin Ji,Feng Lin

Spinel is a powerful non-precious metal oxide catalyst that can be used to catalyze the combustion of volatile organic pollutants, potentially replacing precious metal catalysts. To enhance the catalytic activity and stability of CuMn 2 O 4 , we constructed gradient distribution of oxygen vacancies (V o ) on the CuMn 2 O 4-δ surface utilizing alkali treatment method. Alkali treatment dissolves some of the Cu atoms of the CuMn 2 O 4 catalyst, leading to the transformation of part of the Mn-O-Cu structure into the Mn-O structure, which was results in the lengthening of the Mn-O bond and the production of cation defects. The Mn-O bond breaks, releasing a large amount of reactive oxygen and forming oxygen vacancies. Highly reactive lattice oxygen and cation defects is more likely to participate in oxidation reactions. In the catalytic combustion of acetone, the alkali-treated catalyst showed high activity and stability, and the oxidation rate of acetone at 170 °C was increased by 2.86 times. Particularly, the alkali treatment catalysts can convert acetone that has been adsorbed into acetic acid and formic acid using catalyst lattice oxygen in anoxic environment. In the presence of an oxygen stream, the acetic and formic acids underwent direct oxidation, resulting in the formation of water and carbon dioxide. This work promotes the development of oxygen vacancy engineering on the surface of transition metal oxides and provides a new approach to improve the activity and stability of CuMn 2 O 4 in real environments.
