Development of Robust CuNi Bimetallic Catalysts for Selective Hydrogenation of Furfural to Furfuryl Alcohol under Mild Conditions

Deqin He,Zheng Liang,Juwen Gu,Xuechun Sang,Yujia Liu,Songbai Qiu

Furfuryl alcohol represents a pivotal intermediate in the high-value utilization of renewable furfural, derived from agricultural residues. The industrial-scale hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol typically employs Cu-based catalysts, but their limited catalytic activity necessitates high-temperature and high-pressure conditions. Here, we develop robust CuNi bimetallic catalysts through direct calcination of dried sol–gel precursors under H2atmosphere, enabling the complete conversion of furfural to furfuryl alcohol under mild conditions. By adjusting the calcination atmosphere and introducing small amounts of Ni, we achieve the formation of highly dispersed, ultrasmall Cu nanoparticles, resulting in a significant enhancement of the catalytic activity. The optimized 0.5%Ni-10%Cu/SiO2-CA(H2) catalyst demonstrates superior catalytic performance, achieving 99.4% of furfural conversion and 99.9% of furfuryl alcohol selectivity, respectively, at 55 °C under 2 MPa H2, outperforming previously reported Cu-based catalysts. The excellent performance of CuNi bimetallic catalysts can be attributed to the highly dispersed Cu nanoparticles and the synergistic effect between Cu and Ni for H2activation. This research contributes to the rational design of Cu-based catalysts for the selective hydrogenation of furfural.

Confining CuNi alloy nanoparticles into mesoporous silicon carbide nanofibers for enhanced tandem catalytic functionality

Beibei Gao,Yi Zhou,Yuan Fang,Richeng Jin,Yuchi Fan,Lianjun Wang,Wan Jiang,Pengpeng Qiu,Wei Luo

Mesoporous framework supported metal nanoparticle catalyst represents a promising material platform for creating multiple active sites that drive tandem reactions. In this study, we demonstrate a novel catalyst design that involves the encapsulation of CuNi alloy nanoparticles within mesoporous silicon carbide nanofibers (mSiC f ) to achieve efficient tandem conversion of furfural (FFA) into 2-(isopropoxymethyl)furan (IPF). The unique one-dimensional (1D) mesoporous structure of mSiC f , coupled with abundant oxygen-containing groups, offers a favorable surface microenvironment for the stabilization of bimetallic CuNi active sites. Through carefully optimizing metal to acid sites, we have developed a catalyst containing a total mass ratio of 20 % Cu and Ni, which exhibits a remarkable performance with complete FFA conversion and 92 % IPF selectivity in 4 h. In-depth mechanistic investigations have revealed that the superior activity of this catalyst is attributed to a tandem reaction mechanism. Initially, FFA is hydrogenated at the dual metal active sites to produce furfuryl alcohol (FOL) as an intermediate, which is subsequently etherified at the acid sites with suitable species and strengths on the mSiC f supports. Additionally, the robust 1D mSiC f framework effectively protects the metal sites from agglomeration, resulting in excellent reusability of the catalyst. This study underscores the potential of mesoporous silicon carbide-supported bimetallic active sites for achieving enhanced tandem catalytic functionality.

CuNi/Co composites prepared by electroless deposition: structure and catalytic activity for the oxidation of cyclohexene with oxygen

Jianmin Hao,Xiaoli Jiao,Limin Han,Quanling Suo,Ang Ma,Jiansheng Liu,Xu Lian,Linlin Zhang

CuNi/Co composites with various Cu contents have been prepared by electroless deposition (ELD) of Cu on Co powers and characterized with ICP-OES, N2 adsorption/desorption, XRD, SEM, TEM and XPS. Their catalytic performance was examined for the allylic oxidation of cyclohexene with oxygen under solvent-free conditions. The phase structure of the Cu deposit in the composites is transformed from an amorphous phase to a crystalline phase with the increase in Cu content. The composition and microstructure of the Cu deposit in the composite significantly affect its catalytic activity for the oxidation of cyclohexene. CuNi-ELD/Co-5 composite with 6.0 wt% Cu content and amorphous Cu deposit showed the highest catalytic performance with a 46.3% conversion of cyclohexene and 88.1% total selectivity to 2-cyclohexene-1-ol (Cy-ol), 2-cyclohexene-1-one (Cy-one), 2-cyclohexene-1-hydroperoxide (Cy-HP) and cyclohexene oxide (Cy-oxide).

Photoinduced electron-rich CuNi@C/TiO2 catalyst for highly efficient hydrogen production from formaldehyde aqueous solution

Zining Zhou,Meng Wei,Guangxing Yang,Wengbo Du,Feng Peng,Yueping Fang,Yingju Liu,Shengsen Zhang,Rongliang Qiu

Catalytic conversion efficiency from aqueous formaldehyde (HCHO) into hydrogen (H 2 ) on non-noble metal catalysts is much lower than that on noble metal catalysts. Modulating the electronic properties of non-noble metal-based catalysts has been demonstrated an effective approach to improve their catalytic performance. In this work, assisted by light irradiation, photoinduced electron-rich surface structure was designed for the thermal catalytic conversion of HCHO to H 2 . In detail, a heterostructure of CuNi@C composited with TiO 2 was obtained, in which TiO 2 can be photoexcited under light irradiation to provide photoinduced electrons onto the surface of CuNi@C. On the photoinduced electron-rich surface of the CuNi@C/TiO 2 heterostructure, the H 2 evolution rate reached 254.65 mmol h −1 g −1 , which was 1.88 times higher than that on CuNi@C. It is worth noting that the catalytic HCHO conversion efficiency outperforms the current reported non-noble metal catalysts for this reaction. Combining with density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental studies, it is concluded that the electron-rich CuNi@C dramatically reduced the activation energies of the dissociation of HCHO and H 2 O and accelerated the overall reaction rate.

CuNi nano-alloy loading on three-dimensional electrode for efficient nitrate electroreduction to ammonia: Performance and mechanism based on DFT calculation

Xinxin Shi,Yinxia Nian,Yixing Wang,Junjie Zheng,Xufeng Dong,Hao Huang,Julian Shi,Yang Liu,Weihuang Zhu,Pengfei Guo,Tinglin Huang

Recovery of nitrogen from industrial wastewater through electrochemically reducing nitrate to ammonia attracts increasing research interest. However, conventional two-dimensional (2D) planar substrates limit the catalyst activity. Loading catalysts on three-dimensional (3D) electrodes with high specific surface area is an effective way to enhance electrode catalytic activity. In this work, we fabricated a 3D carbon brush electrode loaded with CuNi nano-alloy (CuNi/CB). The CuNi/CB achieved ammonia yield rate (NH 3 -N yr ) of 479.1 ± 5.3 μg h −1  cm −2 within 0.5 h, with a Faraday efficiency of 73.4 %. Compared with CuNi supported on carbon paper (CP), carbon felt (CF) and carbon cloth (CC), the NH 3 -N yr of CuNi/CB were higher by 114.7, 35.2, and 26.8 times, respectively. The outstanding performance of CuNi/CB benefited from the higher specific surface area of the 3D carbon brush. Additionally, Ni doping in the CuNi catalyst reduced the accumulation of NO 2 − by 39.7 % and increased the NH 3 -N yr by 82.9 %. Density functional theory (DFT) revealed that a shift of the d-band center toward Fermi level was likely the fundamental reason for the enhanced activity of the CuNi catalyst, comparing with single Cu catalyst. These findings offer broad prospects of efficient nitrate electroreduction to ammonia by the novel 3D electrode.

Unlocking the potential of CuNi bimetallic catalyst: Structural innovation in phase-separated design for efficient electrochemical CO2 reduction

Min Li,Yutao Cao,Jiaqi Dang,Shuo Cui,Wei Cui,Zengxi Li,Hong Zhao

Bimetallic catalysts are widely used in electrochemical CO 2 reduction reactions (ECRR). However, the study of structural effects of bimetallic catalysts on ECRR is still limited. Herein, two kinds of nitrogen-doped carbon-supported CuNi bimetallic catalysts with alloy structure (CuNi/NC-alloy) and phase-separated structure (CuNi/NC-PS) were prepared, respectively, and their ECRR performance were studied. Interestingly, compared with CuNi/NC-alloy, the unique phase separation structure in the CuNi/NC-PS catalyst made the d-band center of Ni the most moderate, balancing the bonding strength with *COOH and *CO, making it not only exhibited relatively low CO 2 activation barrier but also not been poisoned by CO, thus exhibiting higher CO selectivity. Therefore, CuNi/NC-PS exhibited superior catalytic activity (−0.86 V vs. RHE, FE CO = 94.03 %, j CO = 37.06 mA cm −2 ) compared to CuNi/NC-alloy. In the membrane electrode assembly, based on CuNi/NC-PS catalyst and Co/Mo metal–organic frameworks (Co/Mo-MOF) catalyst, the coupling of formaldehyde oxidation and CO 2 reduction could save 22 % energy consumption at the current density of 100 mA cm −2 and obtain high value-added anode product HCOO − . This study will lay a foundation for understanding the structural effects of CuNi based bimetallic catalysts on their electrocatalytic activities.

Enhanced room-temperature hydrogen storage by CuNi nanoparticles decorated in metal-organic framework UiO-66(Zr)

Pengxiao Liu,Yan Jia,Yao Ning,Xiaocheng Zhang,Shuhui Tian,Fan Yang,Weiyu Song,Ying Zhang

This study demonstrates the significant effect of incorporating inexpensive transition metal nanoparticles into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to improve their room-temperature hydrogen storage properties. Low-cost nanoparticles (Cu, Ni, and CuNi) were incorporated into UiO-66(Zr) via the double-solvent approach (DSA) plus chemical reduction processes. All composites exhibited higher hydrogen storage capacity compared to pure UiO-66 at both room temperature and 60 bar. Notably, the hydrogen spillover efficiency of CuNi nanoparticles loaded in UiO-66 was comparable to that of MOF adsorbents embedded with noble metals such as Pd and Pt. The hydrogen storage capacity of CuNi@UiO-66 was significantly increased from 0.20 wt% to 0.74 wt%. DFT calculations showed that the CuNi alloys facilitated the adsorption and dissociation of hydrogen molecules in comparison to the single metal nanoparticles , thus favoring the hydrogen spillover effect and improving the hydrogen storage performance. This work demonstrates the potential of designing MOF loaded with inexpensive metal nanoparticles for optimized room-temperature hydrogen storage.

Leveraging Atomic-Scale Synergy for Selective CO2 Electrocatalysis to CO over CuNi Dual-Atom Catalysts

Bin Chen,Dehuan Shi,Renxia Deng,Xin Xu,Wenxia Liu,Yang Wei,Zheyuan Liu,Shenghong Zhong,Jianfeng Huang,Yan Yu

Revealing the synergistic catalytic mechanism involving multiple active centers is crucial for understanding multiphase catalysis. However, the complex structures of catalysts and interfacial environments pose a challenge in thoroughly exploring the experimental evidence. This study reports the utilization of a CuNi dual-atom catalyst (Cu/Ni–NC) for the electrochemical reduction of CO2. It demonstrates a high Faradaic efficiency of CO exceeding 99%, remarkable reaction activity with a partial current density surpassing –300 mA cm–2, and prolonged stability for more than 5 days at a current density of –200 mA·cm–2. Operando characterization techniques and density functional theory calculations reveal that Ni atoms function as active sites for the activation and hydrogenation of CO2, while Cu atoms serve as active sites for the dissociation of H2O, supplying protons for the subsequent hydrogenation process. Moreover, the electronic interactions between Ni and Cu atoms facilitate the formation of *COOH and the dissociation of H2O, illustrating a synergistic reduction of CO2 at the dual-atom sites.

Microstructure and properties of C/C-ZrC-CuNi composites prepared by a PIP method using inorganic salt as a precursor

Cuiyan Li,Siyi Qi,Haibo Ouyang,Tianzhan Shen,Zihao Chen,Yanlei Li,Jiaqi Liu

To develop active thermal protection for ultra-high temperature ceramics, C/C-ZrC-CuNi composites were fabricated using a PIP method. This study systematically studied the influence of CuNi alloy content on the microstructure, mechanical properties, thermal conductivity, and ablation resistance of the composites. The incorporation of CuNi alloy significantly enhanced the sintering of the ZrC-C matrix, resulting in improved densification of the composites. Furthermore, the presence of CuNi alloy promoted the graphitization of the carbon matrix, thereby enhancing the thermal conductivity. The composites with the highest CuNi alloy content (ZCN4 sample) exhibited the greatest density(2.26 g/cm 3 ) and thermal conductivity(32.3 W/m·k), along with superior ablation resistance, with mass and line ablation rates of 2.09 mg/s and 2.06 μm/s. This enhanced ablation resistance can be primarily attributed to the sweating cooling effect of the CuNi alloy, which effectively reduces the ablation temperature. Additionally, the formation of Cu 2 O and NiO during ablation acts as sintering aids, facilitating the development of a compact ZrO 2 scale that resists flame erosion. The increased thermal conductivity of the composite further mitigates the temperature rise on the ablation surface.

Compression Performance and Abrasive Wear Resistance of CuNi-Modified Zirconium Oxide-Toughened Alumina Particles-Reinforced Iron Matrix Composites

Han He,Yehua Jiang,Juanjian Ru,Yixin Hua

Compact and continuous Ni-coated zirconium oxide-toughened alumina (ZTA) particles (ZTA p @Ni) and CuNi-coated ZTA particles (ZTA p @CuNi) are prepared by electroless deposition. The thicknesses of the Ni and CuNi coatings are 6.84 and 21.35−43.10 μm, respectively. The ZTA p @Ni- and ZTA p @CuNi-reinforced high-chromium cast iron (HCCI) composites are fabricated by nonpressure cast-infiltration method. Results show that compact interfacial bonding is formed in S3′-ZTA p @CuNi/HCCI without any casting defect. The addition of Ni element can effectively improve the amount of (Cr,Fe) 7 C 3 and refine the grains in HCCI matrix, and Cu element can improve the strength and toughness of the matrix. The compression performance testing shows that the compressive strength and yield strength of S3′-ZTA p @CuNi/HCCI are up to 1128.03 and 1049.40 MPa, respectively. In addition, three-body abrasive testing demonstrates that the abrasive wear resistance of the S3′-ZTA p @CuNi/HCCI is optimal. This can be attributed to the compact combination between ZTA p @CuNi and HCCI matrix, which benefits the load transfer and the protection of ZTA particles to avoid brittle fracture and debonding. So, the appropriate additions of Cu and Ni elements, that is, the thickness and content control of CuNi coatings on ZTA surfaces, are very crucial for the performance improvement of composites.

Graphene stabilized ultra-small CuNi nanocomposite with high activity and recyclability toward catalysing the reduction of aromatic nitro-compounds

Hao Fang,Ming Wen,Hanxing Chen,Qingsheng Wu,Weiying Li

Nowadays, it is of great significance and a challenge to design a noble-metal-free catalyst with high activity and a long lifetime for the reduction of aromatic nitro-compounds. Here, a 2D structured nanocomposite catalyst with graphene supported CuNi alloy nanoparticles (NPs) is prepared, and is promising for meeting the requirements of green chemistry. In this graphene/CuNi nanocomposite, the ultra-small CuNi nanoparticles (∼2 nm) are evenly anchored on graphene sheets, which is not only a breakthrough in the structures, but also brings about an outstanding performance in activity and stability. Combined with a precise optimization of the alloy ratios, the reaction rate constant of graphene/Cu61Ni39 reached a high level of 0.13685 s−1, with a desirable selectivity as high as 99% for various aromatic nitro-compounds. What's more, the catalyst exhibited a unprecedented long lifetime because it could be recycled over 25 times without obvious performance decay or even a morphology change. This work showed the promise and great potential of noble-metal-free catalysts in green chemistry.

Preparation of C@CuNi/TiO2 with a local surface plasmon resonance for photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes and antibiotics under visible light irradiation

Yunfei Yang,Hongfang Shen,Congcong Ma,Dong Li,Bo Ma,Youjun Lu,Yanmin Wang

A composite photocatalyst with carbon-coated CuNi nanoparticles-loaded TiO 2 nanotubes (C@CuNi/TiO 2 ) was synthesized via a microwave hydrothermal alkali stripping method combined with subsequent in-situ carbothermal reduction. The structure, morphology, and surface chemical composition were investigated using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The findings demonstrate that the microwave hydrothermal alkali peeling enables the formation of a three-dimensional C@CuNi/TiO 2 composite structure. The results of transient photocurrent response ( i - t ) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy under visible light demonstrate that C@CuNi/TiO 2 exhibits a reduced rate of electron-hole recombination and lower surface resistance compared to C@TiO 2 , C@Cu/TiO 2 , and C@Ni/TiO 2 . After a two-hour exposure to visible light, the composite photocatalyst C@CuNi/TiO 2 , featuring a molar ratio of 2 % CuNi nanoparticles to TiO 2 nanotubes, exhibited remarkable degradation activity towards organic dyes (Rhodamine B (RhB), Methylene Blue (MB), Methyl Orange (MO)), as well as antibiotics (tetracycline (TC) and levofloxacin (LVFX)). After 5 cycles of photocatalytic reaction, the photodegradation activity of RhB remained above 79 %. It is indicated that CuNi nanoparticles effectively trap and enrich photoelectrons through the photoexcitation of TiO 2 nanotubes. Additionally, the local surface plasmonic resonance (LSPR) effect of CuNi nanoparticles reduces the recombination rate of photogenerated electron/hole and the electron transport resistance in the composite photocatalyst, thereby enhancing its overall photocatalytic activity.
